Side note, because I'm watching a video essay that's pretty much saying everything I've been thinking about about,

With sjm's writing, what separates it from a typical romantasy not to take seriously is that post ACOTAR, the author suddenly says to take it seriously.

Feyre's Calanmai Hall scene isn't about Feyre not wanting Tamlin's advances, but that she does, she's just doing the typical romantasy protag thing of rejecting what you really desire. Think about how this contrasts with Rhysand's scenes utm, she doesn't want them and its not given enough detail, but this changes after Feyre and Rhysand get together. For example, the CoN scene. The fucking mid air thing. The telepathy sexting that can happen at anytime without true consequence. Very exhibition. Much voyeur.

This is literally sjm's fantasies played out through Feyre and Rhysand, and even through Feyre and Tamlin.

Despite how much I like Tamlin, he only really became a truly nuanced character in hindsight for me because of sjm's unintentional manipulations of her own narrative. In ACOTAR, he's also built around Feyre the same way most characters are in the first book.

He is built to fit into Feyre, he's meant to parallel her acceptance of her own desires, her own beast through him, because submitting to him is submitting to herself. That's why Feyre's themes get mixed up post ACOTAR, she loses that beast like quality to become a star to suit Rhysand. And sjm brings that back in ACOWAR with the Mirror (although it doesn't hit like it once would have because instead to fitting Rhysand to Feyre, sjm wrote Feyre to fit Rhysand).

The thing that's frustrating is that sjm is the one that is saying these are just not her fantasies on page, she's the one that brought mental health into it, brought up abuse and neglect, and handled it all so poorly.

It's this thing where sjm still wants to have the upturned-nose high ground in her books, she wants to be right, she doesn't want Feyre to be questioned or truly be in the wrong because Feyre is her fantasy. sjm likely writes Tamlin to not like human slavery, not want to be like his father, and with a self sacrificing personality while keeping his beast like qualities for the steamy parts. Because he's written to have that middle ground most people looking for that fantasy can still enjoy while not being too disturbing for our modern sensibilities.

That's why some people not looking for this find Tamlin and Rhysand's actions strange and gross, but people who already indulge in those fantasies were okay with it. And there's even people who think that ACOTAR is too vanilla (me). Anyway.

Basically, ACOTAR is not meant to be taken seriously, its literally another romance book with a fancy (?) cover. Post ACOTAR is not tho, so sjm makes a big deal about taking it seriously because she wants that middle ground with Rhysand when honestly, Rhysand could have been a dark romance ML and no one would have batted an eye. But that wouldn't work for the precedent sjm established with the middle ground, she needs that 'he's feral and sexy and toes the consent line but it's fine because xyz' in her books, and that's why the fandom is so divided. We can't decide whether or not to take it seriously or not because sjm switched up.

Her fault as a writer is that she didn't do this well at all.

I mean, this is also coming from the same woman that briefly had another one of her characters entertain their sovereign right to colonization in goodwill, so. This woman should never have been taken seriously. Unfortunately, she insists upon herself. So in order to actually discuss these books, we have to take her silliness seriously.

(Which is why I stopped because it's an endless cycle of saying sjm wrote something silly and because she's saying it's serious, now we gotta be serious about bat birthing or whatever)

Sevika character analysis post

Because it feels like everyone's miscaharcterises her and she's being treated only like a "hot mommy" I think I got an aneyrism writing this sentence sorry

// ARCANE spoilers season 1 & 2

So, a little disclaimer, I haven't rewatched season 1 so I might get some stuff wrong from it, feel free to correct me in case I get facts wrong

I want to start from the first impression we get from her. In season one she's a brutal right hand of an undercity mafia basically, a gambler and a card player, smokes, a frequent visitor in brothels (tiktok thinks she and Ambessa fucked the same twink and it changed the course of my life, I feel). She's a brutal and strong fighter. All in all, scary bitch (slay, if I may).

But the other aspect of her charcter in season 1 is that she's ridiculously loyal. She's loyal to Silco like a dog. The way she kept following him even after many many opportunities to get deals with his enemies. What it tells us is that even if she seems like a typical villian, she has a strong moral code. "But what about Vander?" You may ask. Well, her moral code also tells her to support the idea she sees as right. Her and Silco both disagreed on Vander's view, and decided to go their separate way. So even if she's loyal, she's still not going to support someone she doesn't agree with, which distinguishes her from a common minion trope.

In the same loyal theme, I would like to touch upon her relationship with Jinx. Yes, they were openly hostile to each other, but in season 2 Sevika decides to follow Jinx at some point. I have yet to decide if it's just because of Jinx being dear to Silco (a gesture of goodwill) or Sevika actually saw the girl growing up and had warm feelings. I firstly thought Sevika collaborated with Jinx on attack on Cait n Vi just for the sake of revenge (the entire Grey ordeal), but the way she instinctively covered Jinx n Isha with her entire body in this one scene, I fall more on "warm feelings" scale than "cold alliance".

Also don't forget the episode where Jinx gifted Sevika her new hand (which didn't last long but oh well). That was a gesture of goodwill, which is crazy concidering all the curcumstances ngl.

The way Sevika told everyone about Jinx they are not handing over their people even before she knew Jinx was relatively stable or even if she wanted to kill Sevika or not shows really well where her loyalties lie. Whether it was in memory of Silco or Sevika changing to be more like Vander and prioritize community.

And now her relationship with Jinx leads us to a revolution in Piltover. Right after Silco's death Sevika, who has always been a number 2, a right hand, tries to become a leader... but kinda fails. Which is expected. If you folow orders your entire life, it's difficult to make people listen to you even if you have a strong character and morals. And she tries again with leading a revolution against the Piltovian regime.. and fails again. But Jinx somehow has people folowing her without even trying. And Sevika decides to support her in hopes of making Zaun's life easier.

I bet she has complicated feelings about Jinx: maybe some warm ones from seeing her growing up, definitely hatred from all the stuff Jinx did (we still don't know if she knows Jinx killed Silco, right? I bet she figured out tbh), but also the sense of hope for change. And so Sevika becomes a number 2 again. The problem is, this new leader to follow doen't have any ambition or even care about community (she only cares about Isha let's be fr).

And Sevika, who very obviously craves community and connection loses everyone. No Vander, no Silco, and now no Jinx.

But you know what she has? The strong desire to make people's lifes better.

And this is why she doesn't stay back during the Ambessa's attack on Piltover, even tho it's not her, as a zauntie, fight. There's a possibility of Zaun getting in danger (bc let's be honest, Ambessa would just obliterate Zaun in case she reighns) and Sevika stands up for a fight.

And this is why I think she's the perfect candidate to end up in the new Piltover senate.

Tbh the first one would definitely be Ekko with the way he build up his community. Yeah he seems kinda down after all that, but for me personally it's a weak plot to make him all about Jinx in the end, sorry, we need TWO places in the council, you know (on my planet they are both there together)

Sevika tried several times in the past to be a leader and failed, but she still tries again, as her sense of responsibility for her people is stronger than her personal doubts.

(And you know she would have them after whole 2 times oof)

I've seen people on multiple platforms make jokes about Sevika in the council being ridiculous, but I strongly disagree, as you can see. No, she does not have anger issues, Jinx's just annoying/j

All in all, I think she's a very interesting and complex character.

First we start out with the same….tip-tap thingy instrument we had with Love In Paradise, but lower, which DEF is something specifically in music and I’m excited for the musican reactors on youtube start to react to it, and pick it apart (like major/minor)

But its an exact mirror of the beginning of Ody waking up at Calypsos island, is it because things on the island stay the same I wonder? Mhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (its so beautiful)

Someone arrived today (HERMES , we can hear her take a breath and brace herself for what she has to tell Ody)

I thought I knew (you knew…what? thats interesting that she doesnt end that line…and i honestly cant figure out what she implies there, she thoguht she knew that he loved her? that he DOESNT love her, she thought she knew what love felt like? what being loved felt like? OR thought she knew that he was a gift send by the gods? (as it is in the Odyssey iirc..Im not sure on this rn tho, so dont quote me)

The music…is so fricking beautiful in this….we have another refrain, but this time the choir backs her up on the words for “you, too strong, you, was wrong, me, and then the Uuh build up for the the not sorry for loving you”, which just emphases the words again i suppose, and makes her get more emotional? mhhhh not sure! it sounds great tho)

“Im not sorry”, so in the end, even IF she was wrong….shes not sorry, whatever she did to hurt him, the base line is, that she’s not sorry. She should be.

I′m angry and tired and restless and sad (valid feelings, but its all about how you express those…maybe you should get therapy)

I’m stuck in the moments I swore that we had (you swore, but maybe, maybe you just imagined them, because you were so desperate to believe there was actually any love from him, that you made yourself believe his rejections ended up being signs of love after all…thats not healthy, get therapy, rip to jorge tho, i believe i saw a thing that said he wrote it when he was in a low point in life, Id think hes better now, but still, unreciprocated love DOES hurt a lot, so ouchy)

I love you (…………..okay……okay, so…..that line makes the whole song controversial….from the animatic we saw that right after these lines odysseus turns away with an empty/determined expression and no regret or guilt on his face what-so ever, and we can also hear that his voice sounds desperate, dare i saw close to breakdown (slightly out of breath, because he interrupts her, trying to get a word in, my first interpretation was that he was worried and tired, and gave in to her demands, scared to refuse her)

and then theres a breaths pause

You do? (she sounds so HOPEFUL, like she ACTUALLY would believe him if he said it, and i think in this moment Odysseus too realizes that just saying him him, would make it worse, so he sort of back paddles a bit?)

But not in the way that you want me to (because i see not a single clue in the rest of the music that would indicate that he as any positive emotions for her, and i rly just cant imagine him feeling any positive emotions for her even if she did NOTHING else than keeping him on the island, (which is VERY unlikely imo), but its also interesting because thats pretty much as well as vague as the odyssey leaves it, so its kindaaa more accurate again? except that we do not get any cue about ody’s view on the whole situation, we see him sitting at the beach, yes, but we dont get a single “as she wished but he did not” moment…so, thats up to the animators or maybe, maybe, one day jorge confirming or denying anything….but yeah, whatever Calypso feels, Odysseus does reciprocate the sentiment, I like thinking that she did try to guilt-trip into staying and that he ACTUALLY feels guilty for leaving her……….the rest of the saga has elements where I will read A LOT more into the scenes than is written out, so i might be over-analysing them at some point and projecting what I want it to mean into it…but alas)

"Love, or Something Ignites" might just be the best goyuu fic ever!!! let me explain!!! (Thoughts and Review)

Some quick context but cuz this review was already going to be pretty long without my flashback sequence so pls scroll down to the red text if you don't want to hear my history of opinions with JJK and its ships.

I've been deep in the goyuu tag since the beginning of the year, which I found kind of strange at first since I watched S1 way back in 2022 and did not give much of af about the whole show.

I kicked my feet a bit at SukuFushi,  tried to like it more, and even searched out a couple of fics but they just weren't giving AT ALL.

At the start of 2023 I watched jjk 0 and I was kinda hyped to get back into the show, but my shipping heart still ached for something to latch onto so I went on AO3 and picked up the first fic I found. Surprise, surprise, it was a goyuu fic featuring role reversal. I wouldn't say I liked it but it did tickle something in my brain I would have explored if I wasn't neck deep in my bakudeku era at the time.

Then S2 happened and it all just sorta clicked for me. Before then I'd mainly been a SukuIta believer, I didn't frequent their fics but I DID gobble up their twincest doujins like I was starved when I had the time. 2nd cour of S2 coming out practically sealed Goyuu for me, I'd always felt there was a bit of something I saw between them but Yuuji screaming out for Gojo in that last frame...just...*chef's kiss*

I didn't go back to rewatch S1 where a majority of their reactions were like some diehard fans would but the clips and screencaps I've come across now and again are enough to solidify for me that yes! They are made for each other!! (Hope the wrong stsg fans don't find this ◉‿◉)

I'd really love to go on and on about their dynamic but this was supposed to be about my February fic of the month, "Love, or Something Ignites" by lainebee.

Like I said, I've been deep in the tags and the only others I think that come close to this one are "No Sanctuary" by eddie01 and both world's sequels.

Now I'm not saying there aren't other good ones, like I'm just halfway through the hundred and something AO3 pages of their ship tag, so there's a lot I've yet to see. Still, this is a sorta subjective review and I just hope to spread the word of this masterpiece and maybe meet others who've read it so we can fan together in the comments.

(Now that's all out of the way, there will be mild spoilers and also warnings for; omegaverse, mpreg, and voyeurism so let's hop to it (✿^‿^)

The fic is set in a historical Japan au where Yuuji and Sukuna are brothers, with Sukuna being much older and ruling over a kingdom in the south. Thing is, he's constantly at war with the Gojo clan cuz these two mfs are just built like that in every verse. Shit happens and they come to a truce and as a sign of goodwill Sukuna offers Yuuji, his recently presented omega brother, as a gift (I honestly thought Yuuji was like 16 or 17 but he's 19 so like whatever idc (╥﹏╥)

"So what's the problem?" you might ask, well aside from the obvious marriage of convenience plot, Gojo doesn't give a fuck, he's still hung up on Geto (kinda tho, it's complicated but they aren't in love) and he's pretty much intended to go through it for show.

But that's not the end; not only do our boys have no feelings for each other and have never even met, but THING IS... Sukuna has demanded a public consummation cuz he's a bastard like that and we love him for it. Worry not there's no fucking on a stage for everyone to watch...just fucking in a 'room' for a handful of witnesses to watch from behind those dresser screen things (vocab not working lol).

The fic is definitely kinda long and tho there are some slow-burn vibes a lot of it essentially takes place in ONE FUCKING DAY. My first assumptions going into this were, "pacing issues???" and "oh the author is going to either insta love them, make them fuck and spend the rest of the fic doing fluff, or they will fuck with some angst then spend the rest falling in love."

Color me surprised when yeah, they did fuck but that was one or two chapters from the last of about nine.

You expect this kind of shit to feel rushed as fuck but the writing is so fucking divine that you never feel like putting it down. There's always so much going on but time is never wasted dwelling on one subject for too long, it's fast, it's funny, and the characters and setting are constantly giving the energy you know and love from the original show but probably two times better.

One of the things I noticed a few GoYuu writers struggle with is accurately reflecting Gojo cuz he's actually an enigma and arguably one of the most complex characters in the show with a broad range of emotions. He doesn't particularly fit one kind of vibe whereas for everyone else you can pick one or something close to it. Gojo on the other hand goes from one end of the spectrum to the other pretty quickly and that's super hard to capture and explore, especially when it comes to the shorter smutty fics (Not complaining too much tho, I live for the E rating.)

I love the direction the author chose to go with him, and it feels so true to his character, his immature but his teasing doesn't feel over the top or come off as exaggerated. His status as the strongest is just told but shown to us with the way he behaves and I like that we get instances of him getting work done despite knowing he's a rebel. It reminds us that yeah, he's working to make the clan the way he wants but he's just going along with what he has to in true Gojo fashion.

Yuuji, is totally something else, it's implied that he actually killed people...and I don't think we got a paragraph of him feeling guilt over it but that's somewhere toward the end so forget it. Yuuji is the absolute sweetest here and I adore every scene he's in along with how bratty he tends to be with Gojo. It's not frequent and most of the time he's pretty respectful but when he's not...Yeah. His inner thoughts and his conversations with most of the other characters really bring life to the story and you literally feel you're right there with him through it all.

Then there's the smut...oh. my. fucking. GOD. It's absolutely delicious. If you were iffy about it being omegaverse, I beg you to actually consider it cuz all probably more than four thousand words of it are fucking precious.

I had no idea I'd be into sex with some commentary when I began reading but the conversation from the characters picked was spot on and even added to the spicyness.

My favorite part is when Yuuji moans like a fucking pornstar and the zenin guy (forgot his disgusting ass name) goes "The boy is a whore."

Like boohoo bitch just say you wish you were getting all that, I wish I was (╥﹏╥)

If you're still iffy about the Omegaverse trust me it's not that big of a deal, the focus is mainly on Gojo and Yuuji trying to find some mutual ground to get on so the consummation isn't fucking awkward but by talking, joking, and getting to know each other something even more starts to blossom.

There are definitely traces of insta love but I personally see it as a weird mixture of attraction and possessiveness but this book is just like the prelude to the main course which is the second part in the series which I'm not done with yet but fucking hell...all the intrigue and tension that you will find in Love, or Something Ignites, gets doubled with more angst and mystery in the second fic, along with goyuu being stupid as well as stupidly in love.

So give it a try, and if you have, let me know what you think. I'd usually say where the tiny flaws are but for this book there are none...unless you count Yuta being Maki's mate instead of Rika's but that's my personal hill to die on. They saved the absolute best of the season for last and oh my goodness this was everything you want in a finale. Every plot line, character arc, the silencing of political dissidents, homelander running the country essentially, FUCKING SOLDIER BOY’s RETURN?? Season 5 cannot come soon enough. 😭 why’d they take my baby Victoria tho

Ryan and Ashley are going to be the two biggest X factors of the next season. They didn’t mention Ashley being the biggest threat and having the most dirt for no reason, and we haven’t seen what compound V did to her. Would be hilarious if she ends up being OP af.

Ryan felt very cornered in this episode and I don’t blame him at all for what he did to Grace. He honestly held out a lot longer than I thought he would.

Every second watching that scene and it becoming more apparent that he was being held against his will and essentially threatened with killing his father or being trapped.. just knew something bad was gonna come. This basically destroyed all the goodwill Butcher built up with him over the season. You needed to get him to join of his own free will. Now I mean, yea, he sees his dad destroying rooms in the tower and being an asshole, but the alternative is being trapped in a CIA safe house and used as a government tool. Ain’t much better

With Butcher’s tumor in full control now and him going full “by any means necessary” I can only imagine how things are gonna go next season. Does he end up being the final villain? How long does he even last..

Was honestly worried in that ending scene if any of the boys would be killed there. it seems like they’re all just being rounded up and put in prison/camps for the time being.. how did they know the exact spots they’d be leaving the country from though?

Biggest surprise is firecracker making it thru this ep without dying of a heart attack. That titty milk shit really messed her up and I doubt she got long. Fully expected her to croak during her speech there at the end.

GIMME S5 NOW. Awesome finale that got the boys back to its prime. All them mfs crying on Twitter about this season falling off are out of their minds.

Well... EP 5 was depressing as fuck but the most impressive thing about it was the sound design!

The roaring applause of the cult haunted Geto for a year and the animation showed just how much at war he was with himself over it. He did his best to not waver but that PTSD Sound Attack just keeps going.

It starts in the train.

Surrounded by people, Geto holds on - ignoring that memory of the cult. But, maybe because of how similar the train sounded to the applause, the image of the cult keeps popping into his brain.

Funny enough, at this scene, the clapping of hands was absent. It was as if, the wrath was still held at bay.

But then we get into the showers, Geto is just alone with his thoughts and the roaring of the shower.

He is doing his best. "Don't waver."

But it is still there.

The sound of the water going going down the drain as he showers was a very nice touch. It was as if Geto's goodwill, patience, and mental strength are being washed away as well.

Geto tries his hardest to fight - reminding himself of his duties as a jujutsu sorcerer. Tragically it was not enough. The shower sounds transitions into the cult's applause and the ugly negative thought crystallizes finally in his mind.

Side note, the way this scene was done felt like something out of a horror movie. The slow zoom-in to his dead eyes (reminder that eyes are windows to one's soul btw) as the applause rose in volume which ended with the sharp hate-filled word "Monkeys." It's chilling.

Then next time, this transition happens was during Geto's conversation with Yuki which has another excellent use of sound and music because of how it was built up.

Going back a bit tho. Before Yuki, Geto was talking to Haibara. There was absolutely no music. What is present is just a little background noise. So, the sole focus became the conversation between the two students. Like a sponge, the tension of the scene absorbs our attention as listeners.

The silence only broke with Yuki's silliness. There was a goofy sound effect when Geto roasts her. It was a glimpse of Pre-SPV Mission Geto.

Right after that, a light chime bell like sound came in as Yuki explains her search for a permanent solution to the curse problem sorcerers fruitlessly fight a never-ending war with.

The light chime sound is sweet and nice. Geto has hope after hearing the possibility of an end to the curses. But, the chimes are running back and forth. The fast tempo created tension. Geto was thinking and listening and thinking and then

"Why not just kill all non-sorcerers?"

As soon as he says that, the music stopped and the sound of applause creeped in. It roared louder and louder until Yuki's voice could barely rise above its volume.

Geto is now stuck with the idea of killing non-sorcerers. What Yuki is saying from that point on is no longer getting through him 100%. While that is happening, only then it started raining. So, in essence, the applause started before the rain sounds came in.

At this point, the sound of rain and handclapping are indistinguishable. It fits since Geto is now in turmoil about what exactly to think and say when asked if he hates non-sorcerers.

The two sounds just slowly died down when Yuki gave Geto advice. Then, we are back to the oppressive silence again.

I could talk more about this like the fast-violin during Geto's massacre that had a "horror movie" chord prelude in the morgue, the almost "underwater" quality of the villager's voices as they spoke to him about the girls they caged, and even the upbeat OST playing during the KFC Breakup. However, this is already long enough. Maybe next time.

For now, to summarize, there is just simply great sound design in this episode.

In my AU Jeff's story is a little different and makes a lot more sense but like it sticks to the main plot of his well know story, (kills parents,tried to kill his brother, bullied, burned, and ran away)

He has eyelids cause i felt bad for him. But his left nostril is damaged and the skin is half gone.

Appearance wise he usually wears his iconic white hoodie, plain thing from goodwill that he stole when he was 15. He wears other things, but that's his go to.

Sweatpants or jeans, not fussy what kind he’ll wear whatever he can grab.

His eyes aren't blue, more grey and dull, his left eye is damaged by the burning incident so he has to wear glasses to see out of it… but never does.

He’s deaf in his leaf ear too.

And his hair grows slower there. 

Basically the left side of his heads just a little fucked up lols

On that note his hair is cut in a 2000s emo esc style cause he thinks it makes him gorgeous. And wears white face paint on his right side with juggalo makeup. Certified juggalo over here guys.

Thanks to @mercipourleslivres, I started reading Mountain and River Pillow by Mo Shu Bai and I am so so so SO in love! Someone recently asked me for books with God of War/warlord ML and FL who can fight with him on the battlefield and this one is for yoooooouuuuu (this reminds me I also need to finish Rebirth of Star General, which also has that type of couple.)

Also, it's apparently getting an adaptation with Victoria Song and Ding Yuxi and ummmm...that is fucking bizarre casting. I am not sure either one fits (though DYX fits more than Victoria.) I'd cast Lu Yuxiao and Wu Lei, if I had my druthers. (Though they are the same age as opposed to FL being three years older so maybe Meng Ziyi for FL.)

Also, Victoria earned a huge amount of goodwill from me for Ice Fantasy but that was close to a decade ago and she hasn't done anything I liked since and I am fond of DYX but his script picking skills, omg. The director is excellent tho.

I seriously have to ask. Why on earth are you so determined to push the idea that somehow the ENTIRE HUNTER SYSTEM is toxic and painful and it needs to be thrown in the bin. When not only is Ruby's circumstances far more unique than those your typical hunter would typically face. But we have the vast majority of the main cast affirm that yes, they ARE Hunters, in an epic scene of awesome character development?

I get that Ruby is not in an okay place at the moment. She has trauma from Beacon and Altas that is not fully addressed. And her teammates have not reached out to support her in Volume 9 until her outburst (partly due to bad timing. Because holy shit did her backing away from Crescent Rose send alarms ringing in everyone's heads). But blaming the entire Hunter system as toxic and needing to be removed feels very, 'throwing out the baby with the bathwater', you know?

the system currently in place is a post-war concept. it is, at most, 80 years old. we know the world managed to do just fine without it, as before the war kingdoms were expanding and finding new grounds to settle. as a systemic group huntsmen and huntresses aren't needed: the main reason for the academies to exist is to defend the relics hidden in vaults within them, putting a huge target on them that the students meant to defend them don't even know about. same students who usually start training to kill monsters (and potentially other people as well, since that can be part of the job) at the age of 13. that's a child.

we're talking about a system that is basically churning out child soldiers. there's no reason why they need to graduate at the age of 21 instead of starting to train at that age.

we're talking about a system that has no way to actually keep track of all of huntsmen and huntresses to ensure that they aren't abusing their power. these are people who have trained in combat, who have unlocked their aura for extra protection, who can have special powers in form of semblances. these are people who have the power to arrest others. the power imbalance between a regular citizen and a huntsman is absurd. they are super-powered mercenaries who are also cops and if the one you've trusted your life with decides being a decent person doesn't pay enough or doesn't bring them enough joy anymore or whatever, there's not much a regular citizen can do against them alone.

and we have seen them abuse their power already. this is not a what if? this is a holy shit this is already happening. raven has been the bandit queen of anima for almost 20 years, people are terrified of her, and qrow only cared to amass a group to go deal with the tribe when he found out the spring maiden is there. how is this not a problem?

my point is nothing in the show is actually selling me the idea that the huntsmen system is necessary. just because there are few good eggs doesn't mean the rest isn't rotten, that there aren't issues that need to be fixed.

there will always be heroes, people willing to defend those who need help. but they don't need to have a title of a huntsman or a huntress to do so—clearly, since humanity was doing just fine before the war without the academies. and a town or a family should not be required to have enough money to pay for someone to protect them or else trust a goodwill of a stranger to care about them enough to help without a payment (especially when there's a lot of 'looking the other way, this doesn't concern me' going on).

the system isn't bad just because someone came out of it mental health problems—tho obviously that's bad too and should be reason enough to investigate what went wrong and how it can be prevented in the future—it's bad because from the viewpoint of a Regular Joe who needs a huntsman now, you either have enough money to hire a huntsman—and then hope the one you get not only arrives in time but is also actually a decent person—or you're fucked.

December Comics Round-Up

We're hitting the DC Explosion, and then right after that, the DC Implosion!

Action Comics (444-479) (1975-1978)

We're getting into longer storylines, which is fun! And I'm also enjoying all the little mundane "day in the life" backup shorts, they're better snapshots of characterization than most of the main storylines.

Superman (284-322) (1975-1978)

Starting to exam the balance of Clark vs Superman, and it's tipping more towards even these days when before it was pretty firmly 1:9 Clark to Superman. I'm very much not a fan of rehabilitated villians falling back into old ways. There's pretty much never a good reason for it beyond "the writer thought it'd be cool to have this guy be evil again" and it really exemplifies the worst trait of comics: status quo is king. Any development can and will be deleted at any time. And guess what! That shitty story was exactly when Martin Pasko (my enemy) took over as the writer! And then he continues to pound out the stupidest stories like he's competing with Bob Haney (my enemy) for the title of "the worst. And now it's the end of 1977 and we are bringing back kryptonite into the world. I guess some writers got tired of not having an easy out.

Superman Family (175-187) (1976-1978)

Lucy Lane has showed back up, once again only in Jimmy's story. This time superman got to meet her and see what's up, but still we have no idea if Lois even knows she's alive, I'm chewing the drywall folks. Out of the collection of stories I'm enjoying Kara's and Krypto's the most, loving Krypto's time as a movie star complete with a romance with his costar (tho that seems pretty over now, rip Krypto one day I'm sure you'll be able to keep a girlfriend)

Black Lightning (1-6) (1977-1978)

Rereading this as a part of the superman mythos instead of a stand alone is pretty neat, and I agree with all the folks who wrote in asking about a Rose\Thorn cameo, that would be great (I do not remember if this happened or not). It was interesting to see Talia with ties in suicide slums thru Peter Gambi, the first time I read I was just excited to see her (still am) but wasn't thinking at all about her future activity in Metropolis.

1st Issue Special (13) (1977) | The Return of the New Gods (12-19) (1977-1978)

Between this run, Cosmic Odyssey, New Gods 89, and Mr Miracle 77 and 89, this run is the most Kirby-esque. It does a really good job of picking up that torch. I did forget how very thoroughly they killed Darkseid at the end of it, tho it certainly didn't stick.

Mister Miracle (19-25) (1977-1978)

Of the Steve's I absolutely prefer Gerber to Engelhardt. I just do not like Steve E. But Steve G introduced Ethos who is rad and wrote a Much better Barda, and I would have been interested to see where he went with Alianna. I had forgotten about Scott's sort of merging/becoming a motherbox, and I'm sad that it seems like future Mr Miracle authors also forgot about this because it was one of the neatest things to come out of this run.

Super-Team Family (1-15) (1975-1978)

I picked up this run as a team-up mag, not a reprint mag, and deffo Not a Challengers of the Unknown save Henry Kissinger from the bermuda triangle and pretend he's some sort of angel of peace and goodwill towards man. We get back to team-ups about halfway through, but I'm going to need dc to leave Jean Loring alone, they cannot fucking be trusted with her. The last issue is fun tho! New Gods and Flash team up! Once again Barry has been nerfed for the sake of a team up (these authors just do Not understand how fast he is) but not too terribly and it was still v enjoyable.

World's Finest Comics (228-246) (1975-1977)

It is sort of impressive how much I hate every part of issue 228's main story. Every. Little. Part. I meant to finish this up to 1978 by the end of the year but it's wild how Bob Haney (my enemy) saps my will to read comics. What even was the Kor-el storyline? It's turned into an anthology, so I do get to cleanse my palate with Green Arrow and Black Canary stories at least.

Superboy (207-235) (1975-1978)

I understand that the story's that they write will always reflect the values of the times, but does a universe set 1,000 years in the future have to have the exact same values? Its just unimaginative. Also bls save me from reverse racism stories. ...hey.. I think it's pretty messed up to send Infinity Man back to spinning thru the tortures Infinity of time that broke him in the first place. Just saying. This comic (all comics) has such an awfully punitive bent.

Karate Kid (1-15) (1976-1978)/Kamandi (58) (1978)

Not so much a fan of this one.... they nerfed Val, he's having trouble with basic stuff and its especiallyobvious reading it side by side the superboy/Legion title where he is his usual badass self, and i'm sorta annoyed that they axed his flightring in the first issue, and it's orientalist as hell, like. These villians. This art. Whats wrong with you?

Adventure Comics (438-455) (1975-1978)

Sad the the Spectre's run seems to have ended, happy that aquaman's has started! The 70s Spectre was sooo much fun he's just murdering everyone in increasingly creative ways (turned a guy into glass and shattered him, brought a guy's taxidermy bears to life to eat him, turned a guy into wood then took the time to slice him up at a table saw) 60s and 80s Spectre could never. Wrt aquaman, 444 confirms that both aqualad and aquababy are nameless, then as of 446 aquababy gets his name! Let's see how long he lasts. 452 and he's outta here! Aquababy down, and I'm gonna make sure that Arthur follows him, what a dipshit, and Aqualad still doesn't have a name. Aqualad's backup feels a little out of character for me, like, he learns a group of pacifists killed his father so he immediately decides to fuck up their whole town? Implied to be willing to kill them? That's not my boy. I was a little disappointed to go back to superboy in smallville stories, but the first one was tiny babs w superpowers! So everything is forgiven.

Flash GL backups (217-243) (1972-1976)/Green Lantern (90-100) (1976-1978)

Forgot that Green Lantern had a back up feature in Flash! So I went back and read all these! Fun to have Hal back in space, tho i did enjoy all of his green arrow team ups, and also yay, Itty's here!

Aquaman (57-63) (1977-1978)

This was just none stop let's beat on Arthur fest and I'm not gonna lie, he so deserved it but even i was feeling a bit bad for him at the end. Mera's adventure to try and save Arthur Jr was badass and heartbreaking, and it ended with the trip reunited, and Aqualad said he found his name but while he found his parents names (also Thar and Berra? Really? Compared to Arthur and Mera?) in his adventure backup he sure didn't find his. Also they never actually say what name he found sooo.....

The Brave and the Bold (117-132) (1975-1977)

Okay I'm gonna need Haney to stop writing about any indigenous person ever. For real. He needs to shut his mouth. Then issue 124 was the most bewildering 4th wall breaking, author insert issue I've read in a while. Deffo implied that the writers/artists are in the same universe but still controlling everything that happens around them.

Teen Titans (44-53) (1976-1978)

I've got mixed feelings about this run after the hiatus. Love Mal's tenure as the Hornblower, hate that it's so short with no explanation (he just "loses the horn??" Bullshit) V annoyed with how they handled aqualad (he's psychosomatically falling into comas because of his "inferiority complex" comparing himself to the other titans?? Bullshit) but I do enjoy the big three parter at the end that has just about every teen hero out there. Mostly, I can see why it got canceled again: it just meanders without any thought to what's going on, the stories aren't that interesting, and they randomly nerf characters all over the board.

The Phantom Stranger (35-41) (1975-1976)

Well at least we got Cassandra back for the last two issues. And it was fun to have a Deadman team up! Overall this definitely fell into the "too preachy" category in the later half. (I mean. Its the Phantom Stranger. His whole thing is preachy. But still, its more fun when he's hanging out with actual people like Cassandra (sorry Boston u don't count apparently))

Weird Western Tales (34-38) (1976-1977)

Whelp these last five issues of Jonah in Weird West were more of the same fun romp, and I will be excited to read him in his own mag in January!

Shazam! (17-35) (1975-1978)

The last couple of issues suddenly got a new artist who was all about the more modern 70s style rather than the traditional golden age that they were doing before. Very much enjoyed Freddy beating the shit out of captain nazi. Overall I'm honestly meh about the Marvels as a separate universe, I'm looking forward to what'll happen in new earth.

Ricard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter (1-18) (1975-1977)

Woo-hoo Shiva's first appearance! Also Ben! (Sorry Richard ur a distant third) I'm really glad that there was never a hint of romance for Shiva, and everytime somebody ventured it she shut them down cold. And her love for really shitty puns, I liked that too. The whole thing was wildly Orientalist tho, like wow these authors do Not think there is a difference between China and Japan. Basically every minority gets the short end of the stick (sorry that u keep getting shot or grievous headwounds, Ben) but it is pretending to revere east Asian cultures so it's ridiculous that they don't actually know anything about them.

The Secret Society of Super-Villians (1-17) (1976-1978)

Finally an ensemble with a plan and a plot!! Its a little like a proto suicide squad if the squad had no one around to ride herd on them! And Darkseid is there! I enjoyed the first arc, but after Darkseid skipped town things got a little aimless. Lots of crossover activity with Super-Team then JSA then Freedom Fighters, and I know it got canceled and it's not their fault, but the last two unpublished issues are pretty much the Freedom Fighters show with nothing for the Secret Society.

Starfire (1-8) (1976-1977)

I will admit that i picked this up solely for the name of it. The first two issues are by Michelinie (one of my fave bronze age writers) and he sets up such a cool story! I think this Starfire and Kory would get along so well! Then some other asshole picks it up and it becomes 10x more uncomfortably sexual (nothing overt, SA just starts being a more prevalent trope) and all her lieutenants don't respect her and are only following her because they want to fuck her and are really gross about it.... why would they do this to me... the last issue had a new writer team and felt like it was gonna be fun but they deffo got unexpectedly canceled, so that's the last of her, rip.

Kobra (1-7) (1976-1977)

Oh God this motherfucker was written by Martin Pasko (my enemy) way to start on a bad note. I saw Kirby and got excited, but apparently this is right when he was leaving DC, so Pasko took it over and rewrote dialog and changed character designs. And another Jason B enters the ring! So far we have Jason Bard, Jason Blood, and now Jason Burr! Okay, it starts off retty good. The premise is pretty fun, and it's wild how the story beats follow Danny Temple's storyline in Robin 93 (not so surprising, given that he was supposed to get a run as Kid Kobra) but with like 500% less bio-essentialism. Like, we've got good twin\evil twin but it is strongly nurture over nature. Also I'm enjoying that good twin Jason just Does Not Like the cops, that's an unexpected dynamic. But then, of course, Martin Pasko (my enemy) starts off strong then flops when he has more than three issues to work with, i hate him what is this mess?? Double is so unnecessary! I mean I guess it's good to find out how Randu ended up blind, but at what cost?? Mel you did not deserve Pasko's bullshit I'm so sorry babe.

1st Issue Special (8) (1975)/The Warlord (1-10) (1976-1977)

I really like the combination of fantasy and sci-fi in Skartaris, but it does fall very much into the tropes and pitfalls of the time. Still pretty enjoyable, and I'm gonna have a good time reading it, I think.

Showcase (94-96) (1977)

New doom patrooool!! Love to meet Arani under different circumstances, wild that she fully did have a romance w Niles in this version. I can see why it didn't get extended, as it lost the "outsiders and weirdos" charm that the original had.

I did mean to get everything to 1978, but I ended up spending more time with friends and family than reading comics over the holidays (terrible I know)

Whenever I get into the Jace hireling au it's his relationship with Ragh that I find the most fascinating. Does Jace know Ragh saw him? Does he know that Ragh told the others that he saw him? He could totally explain it away if Ragh asks him about it and pretend he has no idea about Kalina's threats, but would Ragh want to risk his mom's life trusting that this guy isn't in on it?

Oh my god SORRY this took a hot sec i got super distracted but had a lot of thoughts but they are also kinda formless and i kept dragging my feet but. I think about this so much too. And i feel bad b/c i feel like im such an opinionated bitch who loves to come to conclusions abt shit but i honestly don't know what ragh would do in that situations (that being said, i do love to hold things in both hands. So many possibilities...)

I really do love Ragh (there's a lot of refreshing queerness in FH but there is something abt him i like especially) and i love when his interiority is taken very seriously and i feel like the throughline for that is he's just so loyal w/ this sense of fraternity w/ the owlbears, w/ his friends, and how earnestly he loves his mom. Ragh is obviously a little too trusting with people he likes and respects, people who are often authority figures who can give him direction, so the question is, if Jace gave him an explanation for what happened. Does he like and respect Jace? Maybe. He probably doesn't know Jace but i imagine there's some degree of jaceporter always a duo overlap that he is somewhat familiar with Jace. Compelled also by what Ragh's relationship to Porter might be. He was obviously very attached to daybreak bc he was. groomed, and Ragh does embody a lot of the traits of an ideal barbarian in Porter's eyes so I imagine he would probably be pretty good in that class.

But he's so protective over Lydia and idk how Jace could bounce back from that if she's at risk. I don't think he's particularly good at keeping secrets tho. So If there's a chance the bad kids hear that Ragh saw Jace talking to Kalina, if they tried to keep it a secret that they know, that they're suspicious of them, would they be able to manage that? like. I don't know if Jace knows Ragh told everyone right away, but i think he could find out soon enough. I honestly don't know how to reconcile what the party would DO with jace once they knew. Or could he talk he way out of it. He could even play the stupidity angle, i had no idea, i was a pawn in this. I know he hates when ppl view sorcerers as dumb but maybe this time it can bail him out. The bad kids are often suspicious kids (i mean riz is right there in the center of all this, and Fig is fig), but i do think they have this perception of Jace that kinda underestimates him.

(He could always say give the "earnest" or earnest answer. Someone wanted to steal his goddess lol. I have so many thoughts abt him n cassankarna... Anyway Maybe that could buy him some goodwill back. I fucked up but it was for my own reasons. But i digress)

Anyway. So many thoughts. None of them conclusive. I would like him to stick around tho. Like. As much as it might practically make sense for the bad kids to ditch him. I REALLY want him in that gd nightmare forest

2. a character whose POV you’re currently exploring

Lol i'm banging my head against the wall getting killed by LJ3porter fic so i'm like. Right in Girlfail Ellie J4 POV hell rn!!!! She's so fun and i do think writing for her is both easy and hard in that i enjoy doing it (and tbh i think i default to her pov usually when im in LJ3 mode) but i worry i make her way too sopping wet and pathetic. Which she can be pathetic but i worry im going like. way too sad wattpad girl with her.

4. a story idea you haven’t written yet

OK! I've talked about a few different things before so i'm gonna. Well. I'm two sentences into twelfth night j2 being sent to pursue Jace on Porter's behalf fic so i feel like that counts as "not written yet." I also talk about how. I think doing a reincarnation au for LJ3 or the clones in general would be so fun. i'm not sure what kind tho, the version in which they're all new teachers at aguefort is so fun and kinda stuck in my brain now. Plus i wanna write Barbarian teacher Tiefling!Ellie x Sorcerer teacher Aasimar!J3 like so so so so bad i think it would be such a funny way to have them never escaping the torment nexus. I also think it would be fun to write something abt LJ3 in their friends with benefits era. Or maybe one of their more official "date nights". I think if they got into doing roleplay in the bedroom is would be so so so so so so fucking funny. Like. Pretending the other is stranger they picked up at the bar or something.

7. your preferred writing fonts

Tbh i kinda would like to find a perfect writing font? I tend to default Arial and it doesn't look perfect its honestly kinda offputting but. my strategy is. When I feel like my writing looks so so so busted i switch to Verdana which is closer to the ao3 font so i can better visualize how it's gonna look. And that helps a bit. Idk im sick.

10. what is the longest amount of time you’ve let a draft rest before you finished it?

That's a good question. Actually? A couple years i think? I abandoned my old talentswap for a couple years before picking it up again in college. (tbh my current ch 3.3 is STILL unfinished so i abandoned it again). Tbh i'm not good at letting drafts rest and returning back to them. I either try to power through or end up abandoning it which i don't love

22. do you ever worry about public reaction to what you’re writing? how do you get past that?

I try not to but like. Yeah. I'm stressed basically every time. I joke that when i write original fiction that i have a hoard of angry twitter pearlclutchers that live in my head ready to rip everything i do to shreds but i try not to listen to them. But i'm worried every time. This has nothing to do with how i feel about you guys tbh i wildly underestimate your guys kindness and goodwill just bc im very hard on myself

I was anxious abt IYWD (I was worried it was gonna come across as too soft or too apologetic). I was anxious that nobody would take to Dyke!Jace/Zara in Who Can Blame a Girl, or i wouldn't be able to sell it

I probably MOST anxious of all about Almost (I was SO stressed that ppl were not gonna vibe at all with Bluejay or not gel with the whole "what if the clones were actual characters" , "born to love porter cliffbreaker, forced to do menial tasks for jaceprime" etc etc thought experiment. and i was so so so so so so scared about dropping the nickname Bluejay i was worried it was gonna be completely stupid and i was completely off the mark)

I was anxious abt Biggest Lie (i was worried it wasn't hot enough or maybe too violent or that it was maybe too shamelessly just like. smut lol).

And after Almost i was probably second most anxious about Stay / Leave. It was just a wip i really struggled with and idk it was so.... insular i guess? b/c it was so niche and the wip ended up being SO LONG and kinda emotional and sappy? Like again i think i was having the same doubts i had abt j2 in which i was like what if i can't sell people on this relationship. What if i've failed to convey something sincere. (that one was crazy tho bc i really really really really tried to release it and not care what happened bc i knew only a handfull of ppl would read it and i really really really tried to be cool and for a while i was but it was just hard i was so nervous and i don't think it was anyones reaction is really was just my nerves that were putting me in such a bad and upset mood and then over the next day or two i. I made this joke earlier that like. I PROMISE and hope i'm not overinflating my ego when i say this like i'm perfectly aware that i just write silly smut online but it really was so so so so funny. to see everyone practically overnight be like.... wait. Are LJ3..... in love??? And now LJ3 is like such an integral part of clone lore.

24. how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?

That's a good question bc i feel like. When i'm stuck in one medium i tend to just try and distract myself with another so when im bad at drawing i write and when im bad at writing i draw. But thats not exactly recharging. Tbh i do think i need to find better things in my routine that rejuvenate me i think i haven't been particularly good at treating myself well lately

30. share a fic you’re especially proud of

I'm cringe and usually will shill if you want divinity (you're gonna have to go through me) as one of my favorite things i've ever written. But im also extremely confident most of y'all have already read it. I'm very very hard on myself so i swing between thinking the things i make suck and also being like. Fairly proud of all of them.

But idk it was my first ambitious thing i wrote and FINISHED in a long time and honestly? I do think its slightly better than the rest bc the iterations are all reliant on the original so they're very intertextual and repetitive which isn't BAD but. The extra work it took to make IYWD work makes it feel different to me. There's a LOT of stuff in it that i'm proud of that i honestly kind of miss b/c Porter is so smitten for Jace in a way he hasn't been in things i've written in a long time. I'm a softy who likes when jaceporter are soft and kinda in love... sue me... And like. i always feel so self congratulatory talking about the Loving To the Point of Invention Detect Thoughts + Teleport but i really felt good about coming up with that. And i still like the flashbacks a lot. It always feels so embarrassing to admit that i like. Get emotional thinking about the flashback of them on the bed. Sometimes i tailor make a scene just for me. "I promise i'm never going to let anything happen to you ever again" "as a paladin or a barbarian" "both" is like. Such a scene just for me. And I think the ending is good too. "I'll take it. I'll take it all" just felt so. fitting. It's so him getting to hear himself say to porter "i'll take the thing with you that is broken and fucked and full of compromises even if it has to end". Sigh. Sometimes you're an english major and you agonize over being a good writer for like two decades and realize that you might not be as horrible as you think.

(For the record. i think if i were to rank what i've written for fantasy high from fav to least fave, i'd say IYWD, Biggest Lie, Stay / Leave, Who Can Blame a Girl, Almost, Tell Me How, and it feels weird to put Almost that low bc i do like it. Tbh i regret making it so short i think i could've pushed it further)
