It’s genuinely fucking crazy how the entire point of the superhero in 90% of cases is that they are vigilantes who operate outside of the legal system and yet so many of them are given plot lines about how the cops or the military are Awesome. Or like will show them buddy buddy with cops or the government. LIKE STOP ITTTT. STOP ITTTTT. And most of the time too it’s for characters where them being hyper connected with the government etc makes their overall story Worse. i do have to say though that this is totally how i thought venom 2011 was going to go. the first like, four-ish issues got my hopes up so much. i really honestly thought it was going to be drawing parallels between symby and flash how they are ultimately just tools of the government, just weapons that can be discarded in pushing the military's agenda.

this whole page drove me insane at the time and it still kinda does. the way flash is lying directly to his superior to stay with symby longer despite how much he's been drilled that being with the symbiote too long is a danger. they aren't friends yet this early but there's still this impulse to stick with it. and it's because they're parallels!!! the symbiote is quite literally being treated as a mindless tool by the government - it's deprived of all rights that a sentient, sapient being requires. it's trapped and it's being forced into serving and fighting on behalf of a government that doesn't even care for it. likewise, flash is being given the illusion of choice, and to some extent he still does have a choice, but he's being so manipulated by the government here that really he is also just a mindless tool for them - or at least, they want him to be mindless about it. the final fucking panel at the bottom of the final page is crazy.

it was such a strong start to a run that i was very apprehensive about due to aforementioned lack of knowledge of flash as a character, and my general fed-up-ness with the way the comics had been handling venom and eddie in general during that irl time period. so i was so so hoping that it would be taking a blatant and staunch anti-military stance, or even at the bare minimum if it was even still done in a liberal way, as long as there was still SOME criticism of the military complex i would be jumping for joy. and the idea of flash and symby then also bonding during all that?!! crazy. but then it just kinda. goes off the fucking rails halfway through that run/??? like demons and hell and satan kinda off the rails. absolute bonkers. i need to reread venom 2011 actually i barely remember it it was like a fever dream to me. could have been because i descended into madness shortly after i read it but i digress

I know I said I want to write smut but now I want to write. I don't know. Something else. Something Venom-related and also Harry-related. Like, not a fix for MSM2 or anything - god no, I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole - but I think Harry would still be fascinated by the concept of symbiosis. By the idea that theoretically anyone could be Venom... but the reality that actually only a very few people in very specific circumstances can Be Venom. Maybe "5 times someone else told Harry about Venom, and 1 time he told someone else about Venom"...

Especially in the wake of the original Red Goblin story, minus Flash dying of course, I think it would be neat to have Harry then pass on what he's learned about symbiosis to Normie. Some kind of attempt to help his oldest son process the trauma, or something...

I have just. Lots of feelings about this. Maybe it might even come up because Normie is scared to visit Uncle Flash, who's recovering in the hospital - he's scared that the Carnage bit is still inside him, and that he might hurt Flash somehow. So Harry sits him down and talks it over with Normie, trying to reassure him and dissuade his fears. He might not know a lot about Carnage, but he knows a fair amount about Venom, and that's better than nothing in this case.

All he wants, ultimately, is just for his family to be safe and happy. Even when weird shit keeps happening to them.

Firstly like I know I'm safe here, nobody's transphobic or nothing (the manager sometimes calls me they, but that's just cs he's like,, old, lmao, and he's started giving me funny little cheer-up shoulder bumps whenever a very misgendering customer leaves lmao, he's sound), I could not guarantee that going into a brand new job with strangers

Also like you clearly don't understand how much becoming a supervisor would wreck my life completely like,, I have an agreement with the manager that I don't do more than 30 hours on the regular (like, if there's something happened and I have to do 34 one week, the second week I will definitely be doing 25 instead to make up for it) for a reason, it's because I would have so little left if I did - I already still now fall asleep on the bus home sometimes, but I remember doing 40 hour weeks and sleeping through my breaks, not eating because I'm too tired to stand at the microwave for 5 minutes and don't have the brainpower to use a fork anyway, sleeping in my work uniform and only showering on my days off, cs I truly truly did not have the energy to live, y'know?

There is nothing you could pay me, nothing that would convince me to go back to that. There is no benefit good enough that I'd agree to that again. And to on top of that, be the one in charge for the day, the one making decisions and having to cash up end of day? No.

I might not make a lot of money, but I can get by, and at least - even if I'm still very tired, and have bed days-off to recover from the week sometimes - I can still think, and sit in my living room, and not cry walking home cs I'm so unbelievably bone-tired with it.

I don't care if "that's what you're supposed to do" is "progress in the company". I don't want to. For so so many reasons. But I am allowed to like my little life how it is, thank you.

The thing I hate about peoples "Venom is supposed to be scary!" takes is I dont even really disagree inherently but the scary thing about Venom was originally the fact that they knew everything about Peter and used that information to relentlessly stalk him, showing up where he lived and where Aunt May lived multiple times and just kind of terrorizing him. Genuinely Venom just being a stalker is so much creepier then the whole like "Venom is a scary evil monster man and the symbiote turns you into the worst version of yourself!" kind of thing people go for
