Im so normal about star trek. If you told me literally 6 months ago i would be going insane over weird little aliens like this. I would not have believed you. And this is coming from someone who loves doctor who. Julian would take a bullet for Garak because thats just a fundamental part of who he is as a person and I think you could count on one hand the amount of people he WOULDNT take a bullet for. Garak would take a bullet for Julian and it would be entirely because he's so hopelessly and desperately in love with him and he would be fucking MORTIFIED about it. Garak gets shot for Julian's sake and when he wakes up later he's genuinely mad that he survived because now he has to live with the mortification of having gotten shot for this goddamn doctor for the rest of his life

feeling ill about kai winn again. Character of All Time. she's the planet-wide leader of a religion that has recently been scientifically confirmed to be true, as in, the gods are real and they live in a pocket of space just above the planet and they speak to people all the time. but they've never spoken to her. she clawed her way through the ranks to become pope because she wanted so badly to be close to her gods, and they still give her the cold shoulder. she was also elected president and has to juggle those positions during a turbulent post-war period where tensions are high and resources are low. she's politically and morally conservative, but she's willing to learn from her mistakes if you're nice to her about it. she is run so ragged by her responsibilities and the lack of connection from the gods she loves that it doesnt even take very long for dukat to convert her into his satanist death cult. she lets him, a stranger, sleep with her while he's doing this, because no matter how driven and ambitious she is, at the end of the day she's a lonely and isolated person who has never really been liked very much and she just wants connection. as soon as she discovers dukat's real identity she kicks him out of her bed, because he was the military leader who oversaw the occupation of her planet and oppression of her people--but she continues to keep him around as a cult partner because she refuses to stop working on the plans to blow up the world. she's like 65 and she's crawling down into the fire caves to summon demons like it's no big whoop. who is doing it like her

kai winn adami is like the kind of crazy that makes me crazy. and puts in mind a female mystic from the mid-to-late middle ages. where the very person needs god bc the person is barren of something, food or purpose or existential strength, only winn takes this sideways-sanity into the the arena of political authority and at no point are you ever able to doubt her sincerity and at no point are you ever able to trust her anyway bc she's crazy (but fully in control). she would starve herself to feel the touch of the divine yet claim the touch of the divine without starvation and you would believe her bc you know she would starve herself for the touch of the divine. and to make it all just that bit More--to add to her bigness--her gods are real and the power she yearns to touch is real which makes the power she does wield precarious, bc her attention is split. she is the poster-child of the way a slowly-tortured and fundamentally-denied people can slip into the the "we're-all-mad-here" feeling, even after the denial stops--does it ever stop? is she not still starved for god? is she not still tortured and denied and rebuffed? must she starve everyone else so they can also see it, the way hope can never be anything but immaterial? and you want to say: god is not real. but in this story that's not true. the gods just aren't talking to her. so maybe she's not crazy.

When I first started watching DS9, I listed each character and my impressions of them here. Now that I've finished the show and had time to sit with it, I'm gonna do that again.

Spoilers under the cut!

Benjamin Sisko:

A truly inspirational character with a beautiful and meaningful arc. Sisko is one of the best examples of a healthy father figure I can think of. He's funny, he's responsible, he's kind, he makes hard choices. His arc as the emissary was remarkable. He went from a reluctant star fleet officer to a transcendent being who's destiny was written before he was born. He's the best.

Jake Sisko:

You got to see him grow from a little kid to a remarkable author. His relationship with his father was beutiful and tragic. I would love to see where he is 10 years after the last season.

Kasidy:

Her character wasn't super detailed, but she seemed like a bad ass. A good partner for Sisko.

Sisko's Dad:

Just felt like including him. He's awsome.

Quark:

I love that little rat bastard freak. I love him and his freak little self to death. He's actually the fucking best you don't get it. His gay ass wanted Odo so bad. His arc was just right, changes in perspective but mostly shenanigans.

Rom:

The silliest and goofiest little guy. He's so damn sweet. Best grand nagus ever.

Nog:

I actually cried over Nog joining Statfleet. He is an incredible person. It's really tragic that he had to see the worst of the war so young. Love him too.

Leeta:

Such a badass.

General Martok:

A cool dude.

Worf:

I honestly didn't like Worf that much in TNG. That changed REAL quick. You get to see so much more of his character in DS9. He's just the best.

Jadzia Dax:

OH MY GOD DAX AGAGAGAGAG I cannot express how much I love her. She was absolutely incredible. Her and Worf were actually the sweetest ever. Her death pissed me the fuck off.

Ezri Dax:

When she came on, I tried not to like her. I failed. She is beutiful cinnamon roll too good for this world.

Keiko:

Wish you got to see more of her. She's awsome.

O' Brien kids:

I LOVE HIM POOR GUY!!! Him and Julian are the best grumpy sunshine ever.

Julian:

AGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAG THE TWINKIEST TWIK WHO EVER TWINKED I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM YOU DON'T GET IT YOU'LL NEVER GET IT!!! He feels so real. His arc is remarkable. From bright eyed "frontier doctor" fresh from Star Fleet Medical to the tragedy of the war and his family and being discovered as genetically modified, his friendships. All of it. He just needed to kiss a lizard.

Garak:

I LOVE THAT TRAGIC ASS HORNY ASS FUCK ASS LIZARD ASS FUCK I LOVE HIM TO DEATH HE JUST NEEDED TO KISS A TWINK.

Kira:

SHE IS SUCH A BADASS. Her character development? Incredible. She just. I don't know. I just love her. She's quite literally hanging on my wall.

Odo:

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHH I LOVE HIM. HE'S JUST SO. AHAHAHAHAHAH. His story is one of the most tragic. I love him and Kira. I cried when he went home. Also him and Quark were fucking.

Kai Winn:

I hated her and then someone changed my mind so I hate her less. Her arc was wild.

Gul Dukat:

FUCK HIM FUCK HIM FUCK HIM FUCK HIM FUCK HIM FUCK HIM FUCK HIM HE'S A PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT

Ziyal:

Maybe the most tragic casualty of the occupation and the war. She deserved so much better.
