Things between you and satoru were awkward yet it was peaceful. He's being respectful towards your rules (not touching eachother without any reason, sleeping in separate rooms etc etc). Satoru almost looks like a child, you were surprised seeing people visit the beach in this weather too. Satoru bought you a party floral midi dress. The weekend of Joel's BBQ was quickly upon you. You had originally planned to bail and had concocted several, of what you thought were solid lies, to get yourself out of attending the event. Still, when Tommy had bumped into you at the bar a few days prior whilst you had a few drinks with Simion, a chap from work you had started seeing, he had invited him too. So now you were stuck with no good reason to avoid what you knew was going to be a painfully awkward afternoon.

Simion was nice. You had been on a few dates since Sandy had come onto the scene. You had hoped that getting back out there would help put a dampener on these feelings you had for Joel but alas, those pesky butterflies still tore you up inside when you knocked on Joel's door and was greeted by a smiley Sarah.

"Hey, sweetheart." You said sweetly as you pecked her on the cheek "Noah is just grabbing the desert from the car if you wanna help him." You finished with a wink, chuckling as she sprinted out the door.

You announced your arrival and placed the beers that you had bought in the fridge, rubbing your sweaty palms down the front of your jeans. You turned to Simion and gave him a nervous smile before motioning your head in instruction to follow you outside. There you found Joel getting the grill set up whilst Tommy set up the lawn games. Ali was already there, having had a sleepover with Sarah the night before.

"Hi, Mum." She called out from her spot on Joel's swing seat, her nose of course buried in a book.

"Hey, baby." You called out as you placed a kiss on the crown of her head "You enjoy your sleepover with Sarah?"

She nodded excitedly before going into detail about the movies they'd watched and how Joel had braided their hair so it would be curly for today. At the mention of his name, you turned to see him watching you closely, his eyes then flicking to the man beside you and you could have sworn his features grew darker.

"I hope she was okay?" You called out to him as you took a few nervous steps closer.

"Yup. Good as always." He replied rather abruptly and you winced at his tone.

Yes… this was going to be an exceedingly painful afternoon.

Once the food was served and beers were in hand, things went from bad to unbearable. Tommy had spent an hour interrogating Simion but to your surprise, the man took it in his stride, chuckling at how absurd some of the questions were.

"We just wanna make sure you're gonna treat our girl good, right brother?" Tommy stated as he nudged Joel but his brother simply shrugged.

"Sure."

Tommy gave his brother an incredulous look, his brows drawing together before he returned his attention to you and the man sitting beside you. You couldn't help but notice how cold Joel's behaviour was. Just a week ago he was practically pleading with you not to bail on all the small traditions your two families had started and now he was looking at anyone and anything but you. He'd barely spoken two words to you either.

"Where's Sandy?" You asked a little while later. The woman's absence had not gone unnoticed and you had also noted that no apologies had been given by either Joel or Tommy for her absence.

"We broke up." Joel replied casually with a shrug of his shoulders and you couldn't stop the look of surprise from spreading across your face.

"Oh?" You said as you tried to bury the small thrill that ran through you "I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?"

"I'm sure you are." He replied coldly and you felt your patience snap.

"Do you have a problem, Miller?" You growled, taking a small amount of satisfaction from the look of surprise that filled his face as he looked at you "You've been an asshole to me and Simion ever since we arrived."

"Babe."

"No!" You interrupted your date as you continued to rip into Joel "We don't need to put up with this." You growled "Ali, baby get your stuff we're leaving. Noah sweetie, can you help her and meet us by the car."

"But mum-"

"No buts." You said sternly, not taking your eyes off of Joel "Just do it please."

Ali and Noah didn't answer back. They simply scurried off and did as you asked, leaving you, Tommy, Simion and Joel in an increasingly charged situation. When you finally broke your staring match with Joel, you stormed into the house to gather your things. Simion helped you, grabbing a few of your things and taking them to the car for you, desperately trying to get out of the house and away from what had become one of the worst afternoons you'd ever experienced. You could hear Tommy screwing at his brother through the kitchen window and you tried to ignore how satisfying it felt for the younger Miller to stick up for you for one.

You were finishing up portioning the pudding you had made into bowls and covering them in clingfilm when Joel walked into the kitchen. He watched you as you finished what you were doing before finally piping up.

"You didn't have to do that." He said, his tone different from how it had been prior to you blowing up at him.

"I made enough for all of us. Tommy and Sarah shouldn't have to miss out just because you decided to be an asshole." You growled as you placed the bowls in the fridge "Heat it in the microwave for 3 minutes when you want it." You stated before covering the rest of the desert.

Joel called your name as you scaled his kitchen but you refused to look at him. Carrying the desert over to the table, you grabbed your coat and slung it on.

"Will you just stop a moment!" He growled out and you did but still you didn't look at him.

"I'm sorry okay." He sighed as he scraped a large hand over his face "I was being an asshole… I just. I have shit going on okay and I took it out on you."

"If you have shit eating at you, you can talk to me, Joel."

"Can I?" He asked and it was your turn to look confused "Just last week you were telling me that you were going to be too busy to hang out and now you're here with a guy and-"

"What does Simion have to do with this?" You asked and Joel's mouth snapped shut as he looked away, unable to answer your question "Thanks for a lovely afternoon, Joel." You snorted as you picked up the desert you had brought and headed to the door "Not." You mumbled under your breath as you walked out the door, leaving a very guilty older Miller in your wake.

"So you just let her go?" Tommy asked as he walked in from the garden "Not gonna tell her why you've been such an insufferable ass this afternoon."

"She's with someone now. Doesn't matter." Joel growled out before walking back outside, noting how Sarah was sitting on the swing seat with her own book in her hands. He could see that she'd been crying and he felt his anger come to a head but not at you. At himself for his inability to just let shit go.

Noah found you that evening, sitting on the couch nursing a coffee and he assumed it was likely dosed with Baileys. It was your go-to drink when you needed cheering up and after the awkward conversation that he had overheard between you and Simion earlier, he knew you likely needed some cheering up.

"You doing okay mum?" He asked and you nodded before taking a small sip of your drink "You need anything?" He asked and you shook your head.

"No thank you, sweetie." You said, your voice cracking as you spoke "I'm sorry about earlier."

"Don't be." Noah said as he sat down beside you and pulled you into a comforting embrace "I'm sorry about Simion." He said after a while and you let out a shuddering breath before taking another sip of your coffee.

"Don't know what I was thinking with him, to be honest." You sighed, wiping your tears away with your sleeve "Too soon after your dad anyway."

"You know… Just before he died, Dad told me something." You looked at Noah with furrowed brows as you waited for him to continue and the boy smiled at you "He said that you and Joel had been pretty sweet on each other before he came along."

"Noah-"

"He said that he knew that the two of you were just hopelessly blind to it." He continued as his eyes drifted to a framed photo of Alec on the wall "He said that he'd always felt a little guilty for getting in the way of you two finding each other but that he was two head over heels not to want to keep you for himself."

You chuckled at that, your own eyes then drifting to the photograph that your son was looking at.

"You know it's okay." He said after a short pause and you looked back at him again "If you and Joel want to be together. I'd be okay with it."

"But Sarah…"

"We'd work it out, mum." He said as he smiled sweetly at you "All I care about is that you're happy and if being with Mr Miller does that then who are we to stop you."

"It doesn't matter baby." You said, stroking his dark locks and giving him a soft smile "Joel doesn't have feelings for me."

"But-"

"Let's just drop it okay?" Noah nodded but he knew that you were hiding something. He just wished you'd let yourself be happy for once.

A knock at your front door tore you away from the TV show that you had on but you weren't really watching. What Noah had said to you was still running laps in your mind and you didn't know what to make of it. Had Alec really been able to see how you felt about Joel?

Answering the door, you were surprised to see Joel standing there. Scratching the back of his neck nervously as he shifted from leg to leg as he waited for you to say something.

"What do you want Joel?" You asked, trying to feign disinterest at his sudden appearance at your door.

"Can we talk?" He asked, his brown eyes killing any resolve you had.

You motioned for him to come in before making your way to the kitchen, pouring him a mug because you knew he'd want one. He thanked you as you handed him the mug and then you both proceeded to sit in awkward silence for what felt like an age.

"So… what was it you wanted to talk about?"

"I wanted to apologise for earlier." He replied, staring at the black liquid in his mug "I was an ass and you and Simion didn't deserve that."

"You're right." You grumbled and he looked at you then, noting your expression was impossible to read "We didn't."

"I wanted to apologise to him too but I guess I'll have to when I next see him."

"We broke up." You stated plainly and Joel's head jumped back at this piece of information.

"Why?" He asked and you snorted.

"Why do you think?" You growled, "He was invited to a BBQ at the house of the chick he's dating's best friend's house and said best friend acting like a complete Hozer all afternoon."

Joel uttered your name but you continued.

"As soon as we got back he told me that he couldn't get involved in whatever drama we had going on and left." You finished as you threw back the last of your coffee.

"I'm sorry." Joel muttered again and you let out a humourless laugh as you stood to refill your drink.

"Yeah well, so am I."

"Look I-"

"Why were you being such an ass?" You interrupted him again, leaving him to flounder for an answer "I'm sorry that you and Sandy broke up and all that but it's not fair to take it out on me."

"We broke up because of you." He rushed out and your mouth snapped shut as your eyes grew wide.

"What do you mean, because of me?" You asked after a short pause and Joel let out a long sigh before he answered.

"After that night when you told me that you wouldn't be around a while, she came over and I was talking to her about what it was that I had done wrong." He started and you shook your head as you answered.

"You didn't do anything wrong Joel."

"But then she told me that you had feelings for me." This statement made your body jolt and you opened your mouth to answer but didn't get the chance "She said that it was really obvious that you had feelings for me so I went to your house to talk to you about it…" He trailed off as his eyes grew sad at the memory "I parked up across the street and I was about to get out of my truck when you answered opened your door and there was Simion."

"Joel-"

"I knew she was wrong but to see it with my own two eyes just felt like a punch to the gut." He sighed "So a few days later I called it off with Sandy. Then Tommy told me he'd run into you and your new boyfriend and that he had invited him to the BBQ and I just… I dunno I just wanted to hate him so badly because he was with you and-"

Joel didn't get to finish his sentence. He was silenced by your lips on his and pulling away you grinned at him like a cat who'd gotten the cream before saying "She wasn't wrong." The two of you stared at each other for a moment. The air between you crackled with pent-up energy before you were both kissing again. You both allowed 10 years' worth of feelings to bleed into this kiss. You both felt like you needed to make up for lost time. Like if you stopped this kiss, the moment would disappear like a puff of smoke and it would have never happened.

So you didn't think twice when you opened Joel's jeans and pulled out his straining erection. Grinning at the whimper your hand around his member pulled from him. She hated Christmas movies.

Yes, I know what you're probably thinking right now, but come on. Even the Romans used to say : de gustibus non est disputandum.

So let the girl live a little.

It's Christmas time after all.

We all could use a little niceness.

And while on the topic.

When whole world seemed to be consumed by the last preparations, buying emergency gifts and standing in grocery stores to acquire the suddenly missing product, Jason and y/n were cuddling on the couch debating what to watch and browsing Netflix hoping for something that would satisfy the tastes of them both.

They subconsciously refused to take part in all that rush and crossing things from the "to-do" list. It was exhausting to just do something because "everyone does that" and because "it's tradition". As if the Christmas didn't come because the windows weren't cleaned or the furniture weren't dusted.

Maybe it was cliché but for those two holiday meant spending time together and truly being close. From the beginning, not only after all the tasks were completed.

"Hey Jace?" She hummed softly

His fur is soft and warm against you through the thin fabric of your shirt, tickling where it touches your bare arms. His claws curl in the hem of your shirt, the tips of them just grazing over your stomach.

It isn’t often you get moments like this now that the Hotel is getting so much attention since the failed extermination and the rebuild – and as long as there was a reporter or a wayward soul in the lobby, Husk was metaphysically tied to the bar. So much of your still-private… situationship had become hurried and fleeting – as much as he wanted to take his time with you, pull you apart in that way that took hours and left the both of you breathless, the most you could manage were stolen quickies and admittedly delicious rough fucks before he’d be torn away from you again.

But this… this is what he’s really found himself missing lately, despite everything he told himself about what he’s feeling. The intimacy of purely innocent moments, of the domesticity you let him share with you.

Husk smiles to himself as you laugh softly at something on the screen, his own attention dedicated entirely to you instead of the film. Your scent teases at his senses, your body a soft and pleasing weight against his chest. His wings curl forward slightly to draw you further into his embrace, smiling when you reach up with your other hand to card your fingers softly through the feathers by your arm.

He touches his nose to the spot below your ear, smiling when he feels you shiver in response. He nuzzles into the same spot and down along your neck, enjoying the way his scent clings to your skin and mingles with yours. He had thought for a while that yours was his favorite scent in the world, but this… the way it mingles with his… God, it’s intoxicating.

You whimper at the first touch of his lips to the side of your neck, shuddering again as he reaches up to brush your hair away from your skin, claws grazing the nape of your neck.

“Oh, Husk…” you breathe as his lips continue to tease over your throat, the barest whisper of his sharp teeth ghosting over your skin. Your fingers tighten briefly on his tail and he growls softly, his tongue lapping briefly at your throat before his lips find the corner of your jaw. “Husk…”

You turn your head to capture his lips with yours, reaching up with one hand to cup his cheek in your palm. He leans into the touch, a purr sounding in his chest as he kisses you back firmly. He smiles into it when you laugh against his lips as he turns you to press you down against the mattress, shifting to cover your body with his. Husk’s wings fluff out behind him, his tail winding around your calf as he kisses you, the purr deepening as you slide your fingers through the fur on his chest.

You push his suspenders down off of his shoulders, winding your arms around his neck and drawing him closer even as you ask, “What about the movie?”

“Fuck the damn movie,” he grumbles and you giggle, the sound warming through every inch of him. Husk kisses you again, moaning into it as you reach between you with one hand to palm him through his pants. “Ohh… baby, I— shit.”

He groans at the sudden, familiar ache that tugs at his throat. Some asshole was at the bar, and his chains tighten around his neck as his contract pulls him back towards it.

“Fuck!” he mutters, his face falling against your shoulder.

You sit up immediately, squashing your own frustrations out of sympathy, smoothing your fingers through the fur between his ears. “We can do this later, Husk.”

He growls to himself, and you see his shoulders jerk with the next pull of his chain. His wings quiver slightly, his claws curling in the sheets, and you know its in the effort to stay where he is a little longer.

“Husk,” you say softly, tilting his head up with your fingers tucked under his chin. “It’s okay. I get it.”

He kisses you again, tearing himself away with a wince at the next pull. The longer he tries to stay, the more painful they’ll become, and you push him away gently.

“Go. I’ll be here when you’re done.”

Husk nods, “’m sorry, doll.”

“Just don’t take it out on the idiot waiting for a drink,” you reply, and he rolls his eyes, scooping up his hat before slouching off towards the door.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Oh dear. Hard to choose one thing. I think my least favorite is that progression where Jason sees proof that Bruce grieved him -> reconciliation immediately happens. The things Jason is upset about in Under the Hood go deeper than just "Bruce wasn't sad enough when I died :(" and I feel like going with that just... eh. It's not my thing. (Also it generally comes hand in hand with Talia was evilly manipulating him into hating Bruce narratives, which I fundamentally reject.)

Tangentially from this if we're gonna go with a story where Jason is angry about Bruce replacing him with Tim, I want to see Tim go 'no no I figured out his identity and made him make me Robin because he was borderline suicidal and Batman needed a Robin,' I want Jason to react to knowing this information like he did in canon. I want him to be like 'do you really think you figured it out on your own. Bruce doesn't make mistakes like that. He did this on purpose to drag you in.' I'M JUST SAYING, look at what he was saying in Teen Titans #29 (because he somehow knew that Tim figured out Bruce's identity):

You spent weeks tracking the Dark Knight. Solving a mystery no one else could. You discovered who he was behind that mask. […] If someone was really trying to find out who Batman really was. If someone was trailing him for weeks. He'd know about it. […] He let you find him."

Let Jason (incorrectly) call Tim a lying liar 2k25.

Anyway the writing where Jason is appeased by learning that (1) Tim figured out Batman's identity independently and convinced him to make him Robin, (2) Bruce did try to kill Joker but Superman stopped him, (not what happened in that comic, for the record,) and (3) Dick killed Joker temporarily that one time is just... not very interesting to me. To me, their conflict is not one that can be easily cleaned up by clearing up a couple misconceptions. And I feel like this reading also ignores the much more irreconcilable moral divide between what Jason and Bruce believe these days.

Of course this also ties in with the whole Lazarus Pit Madness headcanon which... I flop around how I feel about it but I don't like most depictions of it.

Speed round other things I don't like:

Making Jason a brawler or someone who acts before he thinks. He is a planner!!! Yes he gets angry and lashes out but let him premeditate the lashing out. He's honed it into something that will hurt the other person the most first.

Jane Austen is not his entire personality let him read other books let him enjoy other media let him have other interests. What happened to his love for Poison Idea.

Scars: Batarang scar necessary and important he always has it UNLESS specifically fanon Lazarus Pit healing nonsense took it away, in which case the fact that it isn't there makes his mental health even worse. I reject the autopsy scar but I see the appeal of making it a vivisection scar. The J brand/scar on his face I also disagree with.

Lazarus Pit erases scars for me, so vivisection scar also wouldn't exist in my heart.

Jason being unable to die permanently is canon in my heart.

Okay bonus here's a silly headcanon that I think I discussed with you before but: a reading of Jason pre-Pit as a Hollow (a body without a soul,) similar to how Oliver Queen was during Quiver (the first arc of Green Arrow 2001). Since Oliver saw Robin in heaven... just saying. Jason's soul was there.

Jason post-Pit has a soul that the Lazarus Pit fabricated and gave him. Pit Madness episodes are actually just when his new Lazarus Pit soul being imperfect, thus allowing demons to temporarily possess his body. But also sometimes his real soul from before gets his turn with the Xbox. You can play this for comedy. You can play this for angst. I think I'm explaining it bad but I think of this concept often and one day I will do something with it.

Honestly just see my answer for question 8 with regards to what I don't like, that still holds true here.

I like it when he's competent and smart and also when he gets to be a bit of an asshole as a treat. I really enjoy interpretations where he takes care of Crime Alley (I know it's a fanon thing). Him being able to flirt up until he actually likes someone, at which point he will forget every communication skill he has ever gained. His compassion esp for victims is the most important thing ever to me. I like when people remember that he was about two millimeters from blowing Bruce the fuck up in the Batmobile. Him believing in his own code of ethics separate from Bruce is also a very key part of who he is!!

Okay hang on hot take: I don't really... agree? with how people usually write his death trauma flashbacks. Like I am very much an original Death in the Family comic arc truther with how everything went down there, which means:

He was not tied up. The Joker did not spend hours upon hours torturing him and verbally taunting him. (Sorry I am so sick of reading the words forehand or backhand?) Joker beat him up for like... 20 minutes at the very maximum and it's implied that he didn't even intend to kill Jason.

He was not alone when he died. Sheila was there. Even if you want him to hate Sheila forever and ever I think them dying together is soooo important. He wasn't alone.

Jason was not staring at that countdown. I don't think that would be a trigger for him. Even ignoring the fact that he was in and out of consciousness at that point, he spent those last few seconds launching himself to shield Sheila from the blast. Wasn't looking at the countdown.

Smoke inhalation didn't kill him I don't care what Mortimer Gunt's shitty incorrect death certificate says. It also says that he died in Bristol, Gotham. It also says that he was 4'6" (he was 5'4" according to NTT #55). The explosion murdered the fuck out of him. (The original comic says that his body was already cool when Bruce got there, which is nonsensical, but does imply to me that he was already dead dead in the explosion. It wasn't the smoke that got to him.)

I also don't like when fics reveal the Batarang Incident by having Jason use it as ammo when he's lashing out. He would not do that. That is a secret that would have be pried out of him with a crowbar.

I still 100% unironically wholeheartedly believe that this scuffed ass reality tv show from 2007 where CBS stranded 40 children in the middle of the NM desert a la Lord of the Flies is one of the most genuinely fascinating pieces of TV I've ever watched just because of how ABSURD it is on every level

-Their society is a bizarre Communism/Democracy hybrid whose entire economy is based on the barter system

-There is a set class system everyone is sorted into against their will who each get paid more or less money depending on how high or low they are on the ladder, and at the end of each episode they must compete in competitions to decide who gets to be at the top, with the "strongest" being able to get the esteemed title of "upper class"

-Every time they would complete a challenge, at the very end they were given a choice of 2 things that could be added to the town, to which the leaders of the teams would vote on which to get (For example, in one episode they had to choose between fresh produce or 50 pizzas). One of these things was letters from the children's parents, implying that the adults on site were receiving the mail from these kid's parents and deliberately withholding it from them

-In one episode the district leaders of each of the 4 teams (the classes) go out and find a chest full of buffalo nickels (the town's currency), they bring the chest to the town and naturally, this creates unprecedented inflation near instantly, as there's now a mass amount of currency that suddenly appeared in the economy

-Their entire society existed in relative stability until the moment religion was introduced in the form of various religious texts (Bibles, the Quran, etc), after which the town immediately started to go to shit. The Jewish kids and Christian kids were at each other's throats about which religion was """better""" (because they're children who had religion forced upon them at a young age before they were able to think for themselves but that's an entire can of worms I won't open), while the 1 (one) Hindu kid was trying to keep the peace

-At one point the kids start to crave meat, as their food up to that point was mostly canned goods and various produce, so one of the """eldest""" members of the group, (I say """eldest""" because he was still only like 14 or 15) who had worked as a butchers apprentice, took one of their chickens and lead the kids into the desert to where he then taught them how to decapitate, pluck, drain, and cook a chicken.

-One of the kids later did a Reddit AMA about his experience on the show, where he then disclosed various things that happened outside of the camera such as, but not limited to: Oil burns, a kid drinking bleach, scorpions, venomous snakes, an outbreak of herpes, the lack of showers, the lack of multiple toilets (up until I believe a few weeks in they only had one outhouse), etc etc etc

-The parents of these kids allegedly had to sign a 22 page waiver that was basically CBS going "If ur kids get hurt you can't sue us", specifically noting "acts of god" in the contract of things that they weren't to be held accountable for

-At the end of every week, the 4 leaders got together to choose which person would receive that week's "gold star", a star made out of 20,000 USD of solid gold (around 30k after adjusting for inflation), an unfathomable amount of money to give to kids who likely had no concept as to how much money 20 grand was

-The town used for Bonanza City is actually a ghost town/film set located just 20 miles from Santa Fe used as a filming location for movies like A Million Ways to Die In the West (2014) and The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981). The reason I bring this up is because it's the same film set in which 14 years later, Alec Baldwin would accidentally discharge a firearm on the set of Rust, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

To anyone asking where to watch this, I genuinely don't know. All of the 13 episodes used to be available on YouTube by someone who re-uploaded them in 2010, but the channel was terminated last year. I've heard that there are a few Google Drive folders floating around that have the raw MP4 files and you could watch them that way but you'd probably have to go digging for it

😂 it is a choose violence game, let's play with fire 🔥 three Kim characterizations i don't much care for:

writing Kim as really old

like. hmmmm. i feel like a lot of fic out there is just really bad at characterizing young 20 yos, there are a lot of stories that write Kim's vibes like he's 38 yo or something. it's. bizarre. 21/22 yo is still so young. there's still so much uncertainty at that age and so much self-discovery to come. i've complained about this before so i don't want to just rehash that but. yeesh. some people really kinda suck at writing "kid in college" aged characters.

not letting Kim be playful

honestly, this one kinda follows on the previous point? there's a very annoying trend of writing ~older~ characters as only ever very serious. and like, aside from the irritation at the way people are really bad at early 20s vibes, people never outgrow playfulness. in canon, i'm pointing to Porsche trapping Kinn under the sheets and farting or them huffing their morning breaths in each other's faces (i love u canon ❤). but people still do ridiculous shit at 40/50/60/70/80/ALL THE AGES too. 40yo sisters who greet each other by punching the other in the boob. the 60yo neighbor who tells me my shoelaces are untied every time he sees me in sandals. the 50yo uncle who flicks popcorn in the mouths of anyone who falls asleep during movie night. there's no age limit to this sort of thing!

but while some of the ultra seriousness seems to be a weird age thing, it's like people also missed that Kim is playful? he's very intense when he's in mafia business mode and he's a nightmare to the guards (❤), but he plays along with Khun. he teases Chay. he has a good rapport with other university students. he can be more lowkey playful than others, but Kim's not made of stone, he has his fun too.

Wik being a burden on Kim

this one starts running into differences in headcanon-- like personally, i'm looking for fics where Wik is Kim's home. i've cried about this elsewhere so i'll keep it short, but Wik is the life Kim poured blood, sweat, and tears into to build up brick by brick. Wik is the life Kim wants, it's the parts of him he thinks are the best of him. i actually make the MC of the ep4 university one of Kim's best friends (i call him Green), and one of my favorite headcanons i've come up with for them is that everyone thinks Green twists Kim's arm into doing outreach events, but actually Green is Kim's connection to university news because he loves doing them but never knows who to ask. Kim desperately wants to be a source of good inspiration to others and have purpose outside of violence, and Wik is his way of doing that. Wik is not a burden on Kim (in fact, i'd argue Kim all but said he is a burden on Wik, but i digress).

so, that's my personal preference for Kim's relationship with Wik, but obviously not everyone's going to have the same characterization and that's cool. where i start to get annoyed is when people write him as very...hmm. dismissive? of it. or otherwise seems like he doesn't like any aspect of it. i straight up back click on any fic that has Kim fuck up the name of some popular musician. this is not a specific call out, but for example-- i remember reading something where there was this offhand line of Kim being like "and there's a request for a show with some other musician, wangson jack?" and just. no. back click, goodbye, nope. shit like that really starts to bug me. some of it is personal irritation at how awful a lot of english speakers are towards asian artists (which like. random fandom people are not at fault for the crimes of USamerican music reporters. but maybe consider that until people overall are less shitty and dismissive towards them, one off lines referencing real life musicians like this are better off deleted). but over all i just...really, really dislike disrespectful attitudes like that (esp for something related to the arts) and i don't want to read them in my favorite character. Kim is pursuing a career in the music industry for himself--Kim being, u know, Kim, he's going to take it very seriously and with that, also hold a lot of respect towards his fellow musicians generally speaking. at the very least, he's going to be cordial and pleasant with them because no one likes working with an asshole and Kim is trying to keep his mafia bullshit far away from his Wik goals. not everyone's going to have the same characterization headcanons i do for how much i think Kim would pour himself into music and love it, but i really don't vibe with any take where Wik is a burden on or a drag for Kim.

and a bonus ☕ because i luv u too anon: anything where Kim doesn't love his brothers or sees them as actual competition instead of the ones he wants to protect the most. this is not a surprise to anyone here, u all know how much i love brothers, but i've noticed that fandom gets kinda caught up in the chess metaphors sometimes. and to that i say: 1. Terry Pratchett yall: sin is when you treat people like things. 2. Terry Pratchett again: chess is a stupid ass metaphor for real life. 3. kp canon agrees with that. Korn is shit at playing chess. (the fucking. ep1 game. omfg. Chan is all but eating his pieces to let Korn win. i'm still howling over the scholars mate in ep5.) Korn is noticeably shit at all his hobbies that are metaphors for controlling people. which is the point! the boys fail every time they try to play his games, because you cannot play people like you would a game. every triumph is rooted in overturning the game board completely.

in general, i think engaging with star wars from a place of realpolitik and political analysis is a fun thought exercise, especially with the canon and legends lore fleshing out the world a bit beyond lucas's archetypal story. there's a whole swath of authors who have written books and comics for adults that all take the premises of the movies seriously, the work of james luceno jumps to mind, so you can choose to dig into that lore and take it seriously as well.

the politics of the saga are related to but greatly simplified from our reality, and there is much that can be said about the way that the galaxy is designed, from george's viet cong inspired rebellion to his prequels era citizens united and bush era executive overreach. i think it's a mistake to take the jedi's role in government too seriously, as they are kind of a hand-wavy organized militia answerable to the legislative branch (and later executive during the war).

they're both a symbol of how the system works at its best and its worst. under the flourishing galactic republic, they're ideal ambassadors of peacetime diplomacy, whose arrival at a conflict resolves it using negotiation and limited force, before those conflicts sprouted into inter-system military engagement. but under sidious, they're arguably willingly misused to enforce peace on a wider scale, due to sidious's design of breaking the galaxy with a civil war.

i see many, many takes that say that the jedi should not be involved in politics at all, but i really think that's missing the point. you can take how they are being used as like a health test of the body politic, they're an epiphenomenon dependent on the republic as a whole. by the era of the prequels, they were a tool of an age that no longer existed, a more civilized one, where conflict could be resolved locally.

Who else is wondering if something is finally going to happen? And by something I mean if the fucking middle to high school age child is going to successfully kill the adult with a doctorate?

It will never not be funny that this is one of his first canonical introductions and the first allusion to his crime. Which has absolutely fuck all to do with being a doctor. No, it's just him gut checking a fifteen year old.

Shidou: I wonder what you might be referring to there. I’m just doing what I need to do. If anything, I’d be happy if you would lend me a hand.

Amane: I warned you. I can no longer turn a blind eye to this wickedness taking place right in front of us. You’re bringing ruin unto yourself. Do you understand?

Shidou: No, I don’t understand. It’s my job as an adult to teach you that throwing a temper tantrum isn’t going to make everything go your way. If it’s a test of endurance you want, I’m happy to oblige, Amane.

People, when their first song title is a term well used to describe sparring, competing and/or being involved in a conflict of some sort,

Got curious (sidetracked) and checked if this was the same with Tear Drop and no that's usually a compound word from what I saw. Either spelled Teardrop or Tear-drop not with a space. At that point it's just tear and drop. Meaning it could be considered a bit of a play on Shidou's previous title Throw Down.

Unlike the song titles of their peers and their second and first trial song titles respectively Throw Down and Tear Drop lend themselves to multiple interpretations more than any other song title.

Throw down means to discard something as well. In the case of Shidou this something is his ethics,

“Throw down” ethics is a delusion

As well as the inferior in favor of the superior,

“Throw down”, someone’s value- Cannot be the same as another. “Throw down” should choose between superiority or inferiority.

Discard the one who is inferior and save the superior one. I.E throw away what isn't important to me and support what is.

"Hey, you remember what it feels like? The feeling to take away in order to give." If it’s not needed, I’m not interested

Throw Down plays on the multiple meanings of its title,

“Throw down” connecting you with me,

The punch has landed right in the gut connecting them like an umbilical of pain.

All joking aside- This cannot be the proper definition of throw down due to it involving connecting. The proper use of throw down is to disconnect from something either through discarding it or throwing it away.

As it implies accepting or offering an invitations brashly and no longer being able to get out of it. As well as aligns with the definition of Throw Down related to fighting/using violence,

Then his second song title is a location people are literally sent to after fighting to assess the severity of their injuries.

People when they don't throw down so there's no injuries as such no one needs to be triaged-

Q.06 Do you forgive Kotoko?

Shidou: No. I can’t forgive someone for trying to achieve things with violence.

Meaning they are no longer indispensable since their services aren't needed. As such their skills can't be used to lampshade their terrible to nonexistent moral compass by being emphasized in order to make them appear more moral than they actually are. In a I'm moral because I'm the only one able to help way.

Like it will never not be funny that Shidou has a distaste for violence to his own admission. To the point of finding Kotoko's actions unforgivable. Yet his first song title is Throw Down.

Shidou doesn't even have the in character canon excuse of not knowing what this means because he specifically doesn't speak English like Yuno does,

Q.10 Can you speak any languages other than Japanese?

Yuno: “I can’t speak English!” [TN: Her response was written in English.]

Even still this showcases she can write in English but there's the ambiguity of her being taught to write this just in case. Ya know like people are taught how to say no habla espanol to just inform people that they are incapable of speaking that language.

Also just because she cannot speak english doesn't mean English isn't taught at her school at least on a written level. I can't speak spanish I know how to write some things in it though that's for sure.

Meanwhile Shidou,

Q.04 Can you speak any languages other than Japanese?

Shidou: English, and on a basic conversational level German.

He blatantly admits to being able to speak English proficiently in contrast stating he's only able to speak German on a basic conversational level. He has no plausible deniability here. In character he knows what this means and in character the prisoners know their song titles.

This is knowledge they all have and many of them reference those titles over trial two. Anyone who is proficient in English knows what throw down can allude to. It is not generally considered a friendly term for polite conversation.

Which leads into my next point, Shidou's communication style. Many may be under the impression that Shidou is a poor communicator. This isn't exactly the case from my perspective. To me when I see Shidou having a conversation with any of the characters or hear his voice drama it always feels as though he's just doing this,

"Yes and no, it doesn't matter. It’s all how you say it."

In all of his conversations. That is not a link to Throw Down by the way and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Shidou has been shown to be a pretty dry communicator that doesn't show emote often or easily. Yet, he hasn't been shown having difficulty communicating or making acquaintances within Milgram in contrast to Mikoto.

Who's whole thing is going I'm a super nice and amazing communicator I love talking and everything to do with making conversation. Though I end up talking over people a lot and being too much. Has zero friends in this prison due to what I can only describe as liking talking to much and the Leo from Rise of TMNT speaking habits that makes him a bit hard for slower communicators to deal with.

Something everyone else in Milgram is actually. This man was made to not get along with anyone here. This is why despite his closeness in age to prisoners like Futa, Kotoko, and Mahiru- Mikoto more so gravitated towards Kazui and Shidou individuals more likely to be able to keep up with his communication style because they're older.

There was a thing on this I was discussing earlier hold on- Okay a while back I was looking into Verbal Comprehension. This is because my older sister was looking over my diagnoses forms and going over the IQ test portion of it and I got curious about what she was discussing so I was looking into what the scores meant with DoctorBunny's help.

He told me what the acronyms stood for on it. So I was able to look into it further. The verbal comprehension descriptor really fit well with Mikoto.

So, let's talk about it,

Also, I don’t give nicknames to everyone. I don’t give them to young kids like Amane, or to the hard-to-approach types like Shidou-san. I mean, I’m not giving you one, right?

Mikoto: Ah, you don’t need to put it out! That’d be such a waste! I smoke too occasionally. Though just vape. Like, the smoking room is a really good spot for communication, right? So I thought now might be a good opportunity to talk with you. Not like I have anything else to do. By the way, I’ve been wondering for a while, but do you always wear those gloves?

Shidou: I don’t…… How to put it…… I suppose…… since I have my hands covered all the time, then when I take them off, it feels as though the feeling in my fingertips is even greater…… I know it’s probably all in my head…… but that’s how it feels.

Mikoto: Hey, hey, Koto-chan. I’ve been thinking this ever since I first heard your name, but don’t you think the names “Mikoto” and “Kotoko” kinda sound like siblings?

Kotoko: No.

Mikoto: Don’t say that! Let’s get along well from here on as the Koto-Koto combo!

Kotoko: I’m not doing that.

Q.14  Are there any prisoners you don’t get on with?

Kotoko: Mikoto. He’s loud and bothersome.

At the beginning of Milgram Mikoto speaks quickly. In bursts that make it difficult for others to keep up and get a word in edgewise. He usually starts conversations with greetings, statements or questions and when he starts he doesn't stop. He's a very active communicator and is shown to carry most conversations he's in early on even when the other party isn't giving him much to work with.

Over the course of trial one he gets quieter more reserved and standoffish. More than likely due to his verdict.

Q.07 Are there any prisoners you get along with?

Shidou: Kayano-kun has become like that, and I can’t spend my time smoking at the moment, so the smoking trio has disbanded, which is a bit lonely.

Haruka: Ah, I’m fine. I’ve been enjoying myself, a lot. Um, I’m sorry, for avoiding you. I was a bit scared. Of you, honestly……

Mikoto: Ahhh, yeah. I’ve been lashing out whenever I go to sleep, right? ……it’s fine. Even I think you’re right to be scared. You know, I kinda just hate that I don’t even know what’s going on myself…… haha. Ah, but despite all that you still came and talked to me because it’s my birthday, right? Thank you, you’ve grown into a good man.

Kayano-kun has become like that. The smoking trio has disbanded, which is a bit lonely.

In contrast Shidou isn't a proactive communicator. He doesn't really go into conversations often. Usually being the one approached by others within the timeline or in the middle of engaging with someone already.

He's never really gone out of his way to approach someone to talk to them. He's reserved, quiet, and more likely to be viewed as the sort always in their own head.

His first timeline interaction shows this off pretty well,

Kazui: Ahh, this old man’s gonna go and smoke in the corner a bit. I checked with the guard, and apparently we can use our free time however we want. Man, I’m glad this place is so relaxed.

Shidou: ……! Are…… we allowed to smoke……?

Kazui: Huh…… Shidou-kun, was it? You smoke too? That’s kinda unexpected.

Shidou: Ah, yes. ……I only started fairly recently though. I’ll go with you…… to smoke.

Futa: Ahh, those old men really stink of tobacco. Are they idiots or something? They should know better at that age…… If they really can’t cope without relying on something like that then I worry about their sanity.

Yuno: ……it doesn’t really matter does it? They’re making sure they’re staying far away from the people who don’t smoke. Personally I quite like the smell anyway.

Futa: Huh!? What are you talking about? It means you’re more likely to get sick, it costs money, it’s a nuisance for everyone around you, what’s even the point. Our tax money is being wasted going towards paying for that, you know? If you were really smart, you’d know not to smoke at all!

Yuno: I see~

Shidou's quiet display of shock juxtaposing Futa's overt display of contempt. Meanwhile Yuno's questioning of Futa's statements parallels Kazui's questioning and mild judgmental response to Shidou smoking. Showcasing their different communications styles and how they handle unexpected conflict of information.

Yuno's tendency to go if it's not bothering her then it doesn't matter. The allusion to Kazui's vigilance. The fact that he's been watching everyone to make sure there's an opening. Possibly from what he saw of Shidou concluding he didn't smoke and already having Shidou's name noted despite this appearing to be the first time they're speaking.

Futa complaining about the ways in which individuals impact the whole group through their actions regardless of if it directly impacts him or not. As well as Shidou's slow uncertain way of speaking that in this timeline is a bit similar to how Haruka's dialogue is written.

Though the difference is Haruka's dialogue is written in a way to imply anxiety while Shidou's is written in a way that implies he's thinking over his next statemenet.

Something that becomes more clear in the next timeline he's in,

Yuno: Shidou-san, apparently if you send a request to the guard, they’ll provide us with any basic necessities we require. Apparently we can even get some more luxury items to an extent. Is there anything you want?

Shidou: Kashiki-kun…… I wonder why Es-kun is giving all of us that much freedom. It’s obvious that this isn’t just a normal prison, but even taking that into account this is so far removed from what you’d expect from confinement. Don’t you think it’s strange?

Yuno: Hmm. I mean, I think I kinda get why, though. I mean like, if people just get to spend time as they usually do, then I feel like their real personalities are more likely to come out. The guard wants to observe everything about us and then determine whether to forgive us or not, right? It’s not like they particularly want to lock us up or make us suffer. ……at least, not right now they don’t.

Shidou: ……I’m surprised. You’re a smart girl who’s very open-minded…… Those are wonderful traits to have. I see…… In which case, I wonder if I could ask for a box of cigarettes? I don’t want to be a burden, so I don’t mind if it’s the same brand as whatever Mukuhara-san is getting.

This timeline showcases that Shidou's main concern is not burdening anyone. To the extent that he's willing to get the same brand of cigarettes as Kazui if that makes things easier on the system that has imprisoned them or Es. Though he is curious about why that system is relaxed as it is.

His main concern is not being a bother to anyone which if we look back on his first timeline appearance was more than likely the reason for his hesitance there. He may not have wanted to bother or intrude on Kazui's smoking time. This alludes to the sort of communicator Shidou is a good deal.

Something that becomes even clearer when one picks up the pattern of his timeline interactions,

Mahiru: Shidou-san…… you’re really good-looking. Personally I think you’d be better if you ate a bit more, but you’re slim and tall, and well put together to boot…… You must’ve been super popular up until now, right?

Shidou: ……yeah, that’s true…… I did my share of fooling around in the past.

Mahiru: Oh~? That’s not the sort of answer I’d expect from you. I’ve got it! Somebody told you that if you replied like that people wouldn’t resent you so much, right?

Shidou: Haha, I’m surprised you guessed. ……it seems that no matter what guise I put on, it’s meaningless against a woman’s insight.

In all of Shidou's first timeline interaction he is not the one to speak first. Shidou's first timeline interaction is the closest we get to him approaching someone else and that only seems to be because Kazui is the only one with cigarettes at that time as well as due to his suprise at the fact they're allowed to smoke here.

Yet in the timelines beyond that Shidou rarely begins and interaction himself. Instead he is usually approached, in the middle of a task with someone already, or has a very clear purpose when he communicates with someone.

Shidou is the sort of person who needs to be invited to speak. This is why having the smoking group was helpful for him and why he feels a bit lonely now. It was good for someone like him who worries about being a bother as well as the appropriate time to speak to have a social gathering where he can partake in an interest of his while speaking with others.

The smoking room is a really good spot for communication, right? - The smoking trio has disbanded, which is a bit lonely.

There are only a few times where Shidou approaches others himself and those times are telling in my opinion,

Shidou: ……do you mind if we talk? It seems you’ve relaxed a bit more recently, Kusunoki-kun.

Mu: Eh…… yeah, definitely compared to the start…… just a bit. But I’m still scared…… we still don’t know what they might do to us. I want to go home soon…… I wonder what’s happening there…… Papa and Mama must be really worried……

Shidou: That’s good…… You were crying so much, so I was concerned for you. ……yeah, I’m sure. Your family will definitely be worrying about you. I…… hope you can go back soon.

Mu: Shidou-san…… did you come here to comfort me……? I’m sorry, I’d thought you were…… a scary person…… fufu.

Shidou starts this conversation with Mu by asking if she minds if they talk. Showing again that he feels he needs permission to speak or as put in throw down something that tells him,

"Tock-tock… tells me, the reason it’s ok to be here."

He approached Mu mainly because he recognized that she was upset and wanted to check in on her. His concern towards how she was doing outweighed his concern of being a bother so he approached her. It's followed up on later why Mu had the impression that Shidou was a scary person.

The other time he approaches someone is due to concern as well.

Shidou: Sakurai-kun……? Show me your hand.

Haruka: Heh!? No, I…… There’s, n-n-nothing wrong.

Shidou: Show me. ……the palm of your hand is bleeding. I’ll have to disinfect it. Does this always happen……?

Haruka: A-ah…… It’s, j-just a habit…… I-if I’m nervous, I grip my hands, too hard, so my nails……

Again continuing this thing of him only approaching others when he has an expressed purpose or reason to. He does the same with Futa literally talking to him just to see if Futa would take the food he dislikes from him.

Futa: Huh? I don’t particularly care for it one way or the other… Hah, what, are you not able to eat it? So even an adult like you who seems so composed all the time still has a pathetic side.

Shidou: ……I’m not really like that. ……that’s just what it is to be an adult. When I think back…… I don’t think much about me has changed since I was around your age. Getting older…… it doesn’t mean something drastic is going to change about you.

Futa: ……what a depressing outlook…… Well, guess it can’t be helped. Here, I’ll give you my boiled spinach in return. Be grateful.

Shidou: ……Kashiki-kun, what sort of thing does it actually mean by “extracting mental images”?

Yuno: Ah, right, you’re going in for it now aren’t you. Have a nice trip. What sort of thing…… what sort of thing…… Hmm, I don’t actually remember anything after the first part. Talking with the guard was fun, though.

Shidou: I see……? That…… does sound like fun. Well, I’ll be off now.

Yuno: Ok, see you! ……hmm. So even he can smile like that sometimes.

Over the course of Milgram he does talk to people more. His relationship with Kotoko has been pretty interesting. Since Kotoko seems to get on fine with him but Shidou seems iffy about her.

Kotoko: ……Shidou, right? I’ve been watching your actions for a while, and I’m curious. You’re always extremely calm, and your expression never changes. Do you know something about this place?

Shidou: No, I know nothing. ……I’ve never really had an expressive face. Despite appearances, I am quite shaken by this. But…… if I do look calm, as you say…… then I suppose it’s because I don’t particularly dislike it. This place……

Kotoko: Hmm, is that so. ……what a coincidence. I don’t particularly dislike it here either.

Shidou: I think…… that our reasons are probably different. ……from where I’m looking, you’re not particularly normal either, Yuzuriha-kun.

Even going as far to assume she couldn't have come to wish him happy birthday and must be there for something else,

Kotoko: No, it is. Happy birthday, Shidou. Though it’s not like I bought you a present or anything. But while I’m here, I’d also like to ask you something. Has anything changed for you recently? Having nightmares, hearing voices, feeling anxious…… anything like that.

Shidou: Not especially, no. ……ah, so this is about how Kajiyama-kun and Shiina-kun have been strange recently? And she’s been trying to hide it, but Amane too…… We’ve been living in these conditions for a while…… it’s not unusual for there to be an impact on us mentally. Are you worried about them? You’re a very caring person.

Kotoko: Hmm, so you noticed? If nothing’s wrong with you, then that’s good. ……if I’ve understood properly, that means you’re safe…… Once again, happy birthday, Kirisaki Shidou.

Mostly we're pointing this all out to showcase that Shidou doesn't approach people to talk often. He usually uses whatever he's in the middle of as a good excuse to hold a conversation, has an expressed purpose for approaching someone, or is spoken to first.

Kazui: Hey, it’s been a while since we last talked. You’ve been working hard lately. Are you doing ok? Should I give you a shoulder massage?

Shidou: ……no, there’s no need to worry. You’re surely on edge at the moment too, after all, Mukuhara-san. Since I’ve been devoting my time to Shiina-kun, I haven’t had time to help with the rest of the prison. Sorry for leaving everything to you.

Kazui: No, it’s fine. I haven’t done anything really. ……you take on too much responsibility on your own. Make sure you rest a bit too. Oh, that’s right, today’s my birthday. So how about you join me for a smoke? As a present.

Kazui uses all the mannerisms of Shidou's that we've discussed here to invite him to take a moment away from his duties to partake in that hobby he's admitted to missing out on since things changed. Kazui and possibly other prisoners recognize Shidou's communication style and this interaction displays how Kazui in particular works around it.

Kazui recognizes that Shidou needs a break and more than likely hasn't had much time to smoke due to taking care of Mahiru. So him making this offer can be considered killing two birds with one stone. He presents Shidou a convenient excuse to do something he's been missing out on and Shidou is happy to oblige. It would be more impolite to refuse after all.

This conversation works to mirror their first one. Ending with Shidou asking if Kazui can lend him a cigarette. Something he'd have to do when he first joined him to smoke as well. Since he hadn't gotten any yet himself.

Shidou isn't a poor communicator he's a reluctant one. His reluctance creates this impression that what he's doing is something he's uncertain about or doesn't wish to do. When in fact yeah he wanted to go smoke with Kazui. He'd been lamenting about the smoking group breaking up and not being able to do what they'd been doing anymore.

Yet, again-

"There’s no meaning in it, yes and no, it doesn't matter. It’s all how you say it."

If Shidou was really concerned with helping Mahiru he could have turned Kazui down. Just as Kazui had done with him before,

Kazui: What’s up, Shidou-kun? You’re looking pretty down. I guess you must be tired, I’ve been relying on you a lot lately.

There is absolutely nothing funnier that Shidou could do on his birthday that will top everything he's done while here. This man has been ridiculous and continues to get away with it.
