witcher roadtripping, just guys being dudes, horse stuff, winter at kaer morhen polyamory but different, ~trauma~, the mortifying ordeal of accepting you deserve more from life and also of being known, but it's too late (or is it?), grief and mourning and loss and love that was worth its loss, and also, the character death(s) are largely temporary.

@ohnomybreadsticks Your tags got me thinking some more. And here are a few more things for this AU.

-Yennefer teaches Cahir about the value of good lipstick

-Cahir starts internally accepting they/them as their pronouns. Having spent so long trying to make he/him fit means a lot of internalised bullshit to override.

-Talking to Eskel over coffee, Cahir sees their friend suddenly go all doey eyed and distracted. Lambert had just walked into the office in a pencil skirt and suit. The cute little kitten heels are a bonus. Obviously there is something more to it because Eskel looks too smug. When asked, he shrugs.

"Aiden got a new cock, Lambert made a deal to get to be the first one to ride it. In exchange he dressed up for me today."

-When asking subtly about Vesemir, Geralt's the one to laugh.

"He treats gender like a menu at a restaurant. Wakes up and picks what feels right."

-Fringilla makes for a fantastic partner in crime for dress shopping. She convinces Cahir to try on more elegant numbers, flowing dresses that feel airy as well as sinfully tight things that have heads turning at the office party. Though that outfit happened to be a pair of skin tight leather trousers paired with a looser, so white it's almost see through shirt (Cahir calls it their pirate look).

-On their shopping trips she often sighs over Renfri and her crush on them. Cahir helps nudge things along by inviting Renfri along then bailing. They are never forgiven got their appalling attempt at setting Fringilla and Renfri up. But there is no denying the plan worked.

Themme Fatale

Moving from the army to intelligence wasn’t something Cahir ever thought he would do. But the opportunity came up and he’d hoped he’d be able to leave behind the hyper-masculine environment. That had been difficult to fit in with and he had to keep parts of himself under wraps so tightly, he sometimes worried he’d forget who he was. Stepping into the office on his first day, his heart sank a little as he took in the people he would be working with. The men were muscle bound, jostling and laughing much like those in the army had. Meanwhile, the women were all terrifyingly beautiful, feminine and almost otherworldly. Despite the warm welcome, the firm claps to the back and handshakes, Cahir wondered whether he would ever truly fit in.

“We’ve got the morning briefing then we’ll do introductions properly,” the man who introduced himself as Geralt said.

From across the room, someone hollered, “Hey Wolf, your Magpie back yet?”

Rolling his eyes, Geralt turned to yell back. “Ask Yennefer, she’s the one who sent him out.”

“Well, Witch?”

“He’s getting coffee if he knows what’s good for him,” one of the women growled back, glaring. “And if he wants to come tonight, he’s not getting you any Lambert.”

the witcher netflix, birds, and costumes

I am rather delighted that a lot of Netflix Renfri’s clothes definitely share some colour palette with a female red-backed shrike, which is the most commonly-found shrike in Britain (I’m not sure which is the most common in Poland, mark you).

This gets a bit long, so...

Thus:-

Oh, and I note that a shrike is also called a “butcher bird”, at least in English. This feels... pertinent, given it’s the incident where Geralt acquires that hated nickname.

Alas, none of Fringilla’s outfits seem to that closely resonate with any of the species in the fringilla genus, with the possible exception of the Tenerife blue finch or perhaps the Gran Canaria blue finch, which seems a bit unlikely as a match. Although I may have missed some outfits there, and I mean it’s not like Mimi Khayisa wouldn’t rock something in chaffinch or brambling colours. ;-) (Those are the four species of finch in the fringilla species specifically.)

And I don’t think Jaskier would ever wear anything as low-key as sandpiper colours, from any sandpipers. Not even as a disguise. The very idea. ;-)

Polish Witcher fans who also know bird things: how accurate to the Polish are those three bird-related names/nicknames in the English translations? Am I missing something cool at all? :-D
