Actually re-working on my Yuusona and giving them a background and such. I decided I wanted to make them hit a bit closer to home for me as a teenager so WHOOP. It was a little hard for me to write but it was really REALLY really healing. All that under the cut.

Before Twisted Wonderland

Alex had been forced into boxes they couldn’t fit in for as long as they remember. Having to grow up quickly in a family that struggled to get by, Alex typically put themselves after everyone else. This led to Alex being quite bendable to people's whims and holy shit did people do so. Friends were always conditional…as long as they agreed with them…everything was good. The moment they formed an opinion outside of the normal…they were looked down on and mocked. Alex held rather low self esteem which lead to anxiety and depression but their family didn’t believe in “that stuff”, so Alex had to find their own way of coping. That was escapism through art and writing. No matter how much bullshit their parents forced upon them or how they were mocked and belittled by friends for being different…they could always escape into the safety of their own world…where they had control. Where they could be themselves and be liked by people who honestly cared for them. After Alex stood up for themselves they were basically shunned and outcast by their friends. This led to them skipping school and spiraling into deeper depression. Their parents were angry about this but refused to acknowledge this as a cry for help from their child. They basically thought Alex didn’t care about their education so why should they? But Alex did care…but just couldn’t muster up the tears or anger to properly show it in a way that was ‘correct’ or ‘believable’. Alex just spent their days keeping house and looking for work while in the nights when everyone was asleep, they would dance around their room playing scenarios of their favorite characters in their head and coming up with writing and comic ideas…the only things that made them feel alive.

Currently

Alex felt like they were having the best coma induced dream of their life. They didn’t know how they got into this coma but they did not CARE. They weren’t at home. They were somewhere new. NO ONE KNEW THEM. It was horrifying as hell but it was the most thrilling feeling in the world to Alex. When Alex got over the shock and realized this couldn’t be a dream because it was way too long and they couldn’t dream up anything as horrifying as experiencing OVERBLOTS…they still seemed to just accept that this is their life. A part of them nags at them every now and then that they are MISSED. They don’t belong here and they have a HOME. But Alex thinks about their previous home and the misery of being a failure and the emptiness it brought to them in comparison to BEING SOMEONE at NRC…to being needed…looked forward to…for being THEMSELVES… They honestly don’t want to go back. They don’t want to face that reality. They feel at home with the wild and zany bunch here at NRC…and actually experiencing even the most smart, strong, wealthy, clever, and beautiful people they have break down so horribly created a new sense of empathy and connection to people that they never knew they could feel. Plus they got a free cat…err dire beast Grim! :3 Alex feels renewed being able to actually be themselves…though they expected to be outcast or made fun of (especially by Ace)…they slowly opened up and became their weird little selves. Ace, Deuce and Grim being their OG Day 1 homies though. Alex opens up to the others entirely after Book 6. That being the point where they realize that despite this being a different world, that death and loss were still absolutely possible and they honestly cherished Grim, Ace, Deuce and all the other students they had trauma bonded with. They still don’t like thinking about going home but comes around to the idea they might have to at some point…but yeah talking about it gets them super moody. They also seem to be good at photography so that’s kinda fun! Oh and a mouse talks to them in the mirror. His name is Mickey. He is a swell guy.

I always find it difficult to recommend writers as there are so many great writer past and present in the fandom. Plus so many klaine stories have a bit of angst in them.

I do love how all the different factions in Cyberpunk have me reacting in different ways when they come up.

Like, I try to avoid fighting the NCPD, not out of any moral stance, but because they're the only ones who can call for backup. They're massively corrupt and the good ones get pushed out, either literally (River, Anna Hamill) or by the toxic masculinity endemic to the force (Barry), so I wouldn't feel bad at killing them, but more trouble than it's worth.

Meanwhile Tyger Claws go down because of their universal poor treatment of sex workers, Maelstrom goes down because of their more sadistic crimes and the fact their aesthetic feels Neo-Nazi adjacent, and 6th Street's US Nationalism just gives me flashes of current US nationalists (despite Night City not even being part of the New USA).

I try to avoid harming the Valentinos, because they're Jackie's pals and I'm on good terms with other members. Similarly, while I've heard bad things about the Animals, the two times I've interacted with them have seen me take them out non-lethally (and having their leader being cooperative under interrogation), and Rhino being friendly to me before and after our boxing match. So I'm decently cool with them.

Not yet interacted with the Voodoo Boys, but given how they fried Evelyn Parker's brain, and I liked her, they're probably on my bad side from the off.

Meanwhile, the few times I've interacted with Arasaka and Militech, it's been stuff like Arasaka murdering a homeless encapment, or Militech murdering striking workers. Those guys die.

But if their label says "Security Guard" I won't kill them. That's just a dude getting a paycheck.

And then you have Wraiths and Scavs, who are basically generic enemies. I don't think I've ever interacted with them non-violently.

And if the Mox are after me, then I'm the one at fault. Will never hurt a Mox.

Here was a weird part about my fucking weird-to-begin-with Fourth of July!

Let me just say I guess it was as fine as it could be. It was very hard to have every news outlet talking about it and every politician tweeting about it and just basically being confronted by the worst day of my life all day and also having to figure out how to celebrate this stupid holiday that I don't feel that great about anyway.

But we did the community picnic, which was really lovely, and then we got tickets for the drone show and concert in the evening. Now, I don't know if I didn't read the fine print or if I was misled (I was definitely misled), but this wasn't an event with live music, but a CONCERT with some food trucks. And that concert was Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.

Gary is from Highland Park and has this foundation that supports veterans with their stupid party band and I guess they told the city they'd be the right thing for us on this day. And the music itself was fine, they played all the white people favorites from Sweet Caroline to Chicken Fried to Don't Stop Believing. Gary does not sing. Gary plays bass. Gary is a republican.

Anyway the music was fine though I don't think it was as good as the party band we had at my wedding. Alice and I had fun dancing and then we were like YES it's over we are going to get to see the drone show!

But then Gary decided to monologue for 8-10 minutes. Gary said "life is like a box of chocolates." Gary's piano man played the forrest gump theme song. Gary talked for many minutes about how wonderful america is, and how free and safe we are in america, and aren't you proud to be an american, and THEN for the closer he made everyone stand up and sing the Lee Greenwood classic God Bless the USA (I'm Proud to Be an American.)

And I'm sure Gary's speech just really lands in nowhere texas or Alabama or rural michigan or whatever, but does he know what happened to us? As long as a man can legally purchase automatic rifle and use it to murder 7 of my neighbors, injure dozens of others, orphan a baby, leave a 7 year old likely permanently in a wheelchair, and scar an entire town, I am not free. I am not proud to be an American. I am angry and scared and fucking mad at Gary Sinise and his jingoistic propaganda. Adam and I refused to stand up during the song.

In good news, the drone show was delightful!

This celebration of one of the most iconic and delicious foods of the USA, has been taking place every year since the early part of the Roaring 20s era. The story goes that a teenager, Lionel Sternberger, who was working in his father’s sandwich shop, The Rite Spot in Pasadena, California, USA, just decided to put a slice of American cheese on a burger one day. He found it to be tasty so he shared the idea with his dad who liked it too. And, thus, the cheeseburger was born.

Although the idea was thought to be created in California in 1924, the first actual sandwich to be marketed using the word “cheeseburger” was at Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in 1934. But the following year, in 1935, the term “cheeseburger” was actually trademarked in another place, at the Humpty Dumpty Drive-in in Denver, Colorado. It seems that people all over the United States have taken credit for the invention of the cheeseburger!

During his four years in Washington, Donald Trump rarely ventured from the White House to dine in a city widely considered to have one of the finest restaurant scenes in the country. His one known outing was a trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to the hotel that once bore his name to eat at the now-closed BLT Prime by David Burke. He ordered a strip steak, well done, with ketchup. His table shared jumbo shrimp cocktails as an appetizer.

On Monday, to the surprise of many, the former president made a visit to the Eden Center, the Vietnamese shopping and dining destination in Falls Church, Va., where he gave a short campaign speech and sampled dishes from Truong Tien, an exquisite jewel box of a restaurant that specializes in Hue royal cuisine.

“I’m going to buy something beautiful,” Trump said to those inside the restaurant. “I don’t know what it is.”

Among other dishes, Trump ordered banh khoai, a trio of rice-flour shells stuffed with shrimp, mung-bean sprouts and more, which are wrapped in lettuce leaves and served in a taco tray, according to Toan Ngo, a business consultant to Truong Tien. Trump also requested bun thit nuong, a cold vermicelli dish topped with grilled pork and fresh herbs, as well as “rice with seven dishes,” a sampler that shows off chef and owner Thanh Huong Thi Truong’s facility with imperial cooking.

Trump, according to his campaign, ordered all the dishes to go. The campaign did not respond to a question about what Trump thought of the food. The former president’s diet tends to lean more American than Vietnamese: “On Trump Force One there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke,” wrote a pair of top aides, Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, in their book “Let Trump Be Trump.”

Trump’s appearance at Truong Tien was arranged in part by Can Nguyen, a Republican activist and an adjunct professor at George Mason University, said Alan Frank, senior vice president of the Eden Center. Nguyen could not be reached for comment.

The appearance was also arranged by Hung Cao, a retired U.S. Navy captain and a Vietnamese refugee who fled his home country in 1975. Cao won his Republican primary in Virginia and will face Sen. Tim Kaine (D) for a U.S. Senate seat. Trump used his stop at the Eden Center to endorse Cao.

“President Trump continues to make outreach to all communities, especially those that have not been served well by the disastrous Harris-Biden administration,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in an email.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

About 35 people were crowded inside the small, wood-heavy dining room, which features illuminated photos of the Ngo Mon Gate that leads to the imperial city of Hue, where royal cuisine sprang to life during the Nguyen dynasty of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Everyone inside the restaurant was there by invitation, said Frank, who was present for the event. Some were media members, some campaign staff, some servers at the restaurant.

“Somehow, I don’t know what it is, you’ll have to explain it, but the Vietnamese community loves me, and I love them,” Trump said as some onlookers broke into chants of “USA!”

A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that about half of Vietnamese American registered voters were Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, making them more likely to affiliate with Republicans than other Asian Americans. A majority of Asians overall identified as Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents in the same poll. The Eden Center has frequently been a campaign stop for both Republican and Democratic candidates looking to court the Vietnamese vote, Frank said.

“The older Vietnamese community seems to prefer the GOP,” Frank noted in a text exchange. “The younger Vietnamese community prefers the Democratic candidates.”

Trump’s visit presented something of a political hot potato for Troung Tien, Ngo told The Washington Post. Ngo said he advised Truong, the owner, to treat Trump as she would any other diner. He suggested she stay away from the kind of partisan politics that can affect her business, which has had its share of diners from the Biden administration, too. He said he told Truong: “Don’t say anything. Don’t kiss the ring. Don’t do nothing.”

Ngo knows from personal experience that Trump can be divisive: He said he and his father, a Trump supporter, did not speak for nearly a month because of their political differences over the former president. As for Truong, Ngo described her as “Switzerland” when asked which way she leans on Trump.

In a video clip from Fox 5, Truong can be seen standing next to Trump as the former president delivers his standard campaign broadsides. When Trump congratulated Truong on her success, she smiled, kept her hands clasped in front of her and said little. Her reticence may also have been because of her limited English-language skills. Ngo served as an interpreter when I interviewed her last year for The Post’s review of Truong Tien.

The bill for Trump’s lunch came to about $60, Ngo said. Trump left a sizable tip, but Ngo declined to share the exact amount. He said it was many times the size of the bill.

Trump’s visit had another dividend. Ngo said sales were up 300 percent Monday.

Large portions mean leftovers. When the USA first started industrializing and getting loads of immigration, a lot of the people coming in were escaping the Irish potato famine, or were dirt poor. Those people when confronted with the ability to serve extra food at an affordable price found it was great for business, because those poor folks coming from famine could eat for days on their portions, and thus it’s become all but tradition for sit-down restaurants and some fast food places to offer large portions. To-go boxes are implied. You are supposed to take some home. And I think that sort of kindness written into our social norms is a lovely thing.

Biscuits and gravy is far from the most gross looking food common to usamerica but also: I’m pretty sure every culture has delicious but also wildly unhealthy food. It is but human nature to occasionally consume the nutritional equivalent of straight up rat poison. German food is often heavy and greasy.
