Why later life can be a golden age for friendship

Our social goals change in surprising ways over our lifespan – and understanding this can help us build fulfilling connections with others, research suggests.

Do you prefer meeting lots of new people, or spending time with a small circle of close friends? You may think the answer depends on whether you're naturally more of an extrovert or an introvert. But there's another crucial yet little-known factor that shapes our social preferences: age.

Friendship benefits people across all ages, even improving our health and lifespan, a large body of research shows. In later life, friendships can become an especially important source of happiness and life satisfaction. Frequent interactions with a close friend may in fact boost happiness in old age more than those with close family.

One simple explanation for this is that friendships can be more fun, and less tense and fraught, than other relationships. According to a study of Americans aged over 65, encounters with friends were seen as more pleasant than those with family members. These findings contrast with older studies that focus more on close family as the key source of support for ageing adults. Read more

I had an idea for a slugcat for the first time in Awhile .. Meet Deli, she is friends with orange lizards and cyan lizards, and is also on the run from a scav gang (not a tribe!!) lead by a mysterious scav called The Butcher who wants to, who woulda guessed it, fucking butcher her and her lizor friends.

She's very sweet, like Monk, but scav tribes as a whole cannot befriend her due to The Butcher threatening any tribes that it suspects of hiding her. She and her lizards are, however, allowed to pass by scav tolls freely so long as she hasn't shown hostility toward the tribe that manages it in the last four cycles. If she shows hostility after passing through a toll, the tribe will snitch on her to the Butcher, and you'll have to spend a cycle or two being hunted by a kill squad.

Im gonna put her on a shirt :)

Honestly, you'd think I'd have a concrete story for this by now, what with them being such a huge thing in my brain since Winter of '22 but I still. Do not have a solid idea for it (fun fact , how characters meet is like my biggest weakness when it comes to writing them)

But I've got ideas, and the one I've rolled with the longest was that it was just that they met randomly on one of Auto's first nights in Splatsville after coming to the surface. Not a huge deal of a meeting, felt like it wouldn't be that significant to them

A little hard to put my thoughts into words exactly, but Auto just kinda stuck to Hiro because he was encouraged to make friends in the city but he didn't know how to really do that and I suppose Hiro just willingly stuck around with him too

The reality is that you're alone because you chose the person that hurt everyone including you over yourself. He won't be there for you because his head is so far up his ass that he's used to the smell of shit and it's his default scent.

But you're suffering because fecal matter is toxic, and as much as you probably think that by getting your education, it's gonna help you with your debt and other problems, it probably won't for a long time.

But again, you chose the person that thinks shit is the default so why would you improve? Fuck you I guess.

I'm not angry with you anymore, but honestly I can see why you're lonely and holding on to your singular friendship with that one person who isn't in your life anymore, while probably still reeling from having to end the one you had with me.
