Köbbler Sisters in ‘pas de deux de Shawl’ —Watercolor illustration by Johannes Jelgerhuis, 1812, Napoleonic era

According to Manon Schooneman, this illustration (drawn in 1812) is the earliest documented evidence of pointe ballet, which is the style of ballet where dancers stand on their toes.

This drawing was a surprising discovery because it was widely believed that the pointe technique was first performed in 1825 by the Swedish-Italian ballerina Marie Taglioni.

Background on the drawing:

Depicts an Austrian-German family of dancers, the sisters Köbbler, who moved to the Netherlands (which was then part of the French state under the Napoleonic Empire) in the 1810s.

The Tabor Bridge Incident:

Acting with accord for once, Lannes and Murat pooled their talents and concocted a plot to capture the bridges. They sent General Bertrand cantering across the first span where he met a suspicious Colonel Gabriel Geringer von Edenberg, in charge of the demolition team. Though his orders closed the bridges to flags of truce, von Edenberg wilted under Bertrand's demand to inform Auersperg of an armistice recently concluded. The Austrian told the gunners to stand by, and rode off with Bertrand to Stammersdorf and the prince's headquarters. The first phase had gone off without a hitch, and Lannes embarked on the next part of the audacious plan. Passing the Gattertor bridgehead with most of his aides, Murat's chief-of-staff, General Auguste-Daniel Belliard, and one of Oudinot's grenadier brigades creeping behind them, Lannes strolled out onto the bridge. Thick growth on the marshy island close to the mined span hid their progress from the enemy, at least for a while. They knew the Austrians would eventually see them and their unauthorized presence would need some fast-talking justification. Captain Johann Bulgarich of the Szekler Hussars halted on the Spitz bridge next to the Austrian artillery; he was not as gullible as his commanding officer, von Edenberg. He ordered his gunners to prepare to fire. Lannes saw him give the order and yelled at him to turn the guns around because of the armistice. The gunners complied, but Bulgarich was suspicious. His indecision lasted just long enough for Lannes and Belliard to walk right up on the enemy guns. They launched into a rapid-fire conversation with anyone who would listen, not to pass the time but to distract the gunners from Oudinot's advancing grenadiers. The language difficulty helped. The Austrians' command of French was elementary at best, and Lannes overwhelmed them with an onslaught of Gascon badinage. He succeeded in diverting their attention, at least momentarily. Bulgarich finally noticed Oudinot's advance, lost his patience, lit a match, and ordered the gunners to fire. Lannes grabbed his arm, blew out the match, and shouted the order down. Confused, the artillerymen did not light the fuses. With a perfectly straight face, Lannes asked Bulgarich how, when an armistice had been announced, he dared allow such a flagrant breach of famous Austrian military discipline. Bulgarich was spared a reply by the timely arrival of Bertrand and Auersperg. Taking advantage of his new audience, Lannes demanded that Auersperg have Bulgarich shot for his audacity, ordered him to surrender the bridge, then meet with Murat who was patiently waiting to discuss terms. If he failed to agree, the old prince was told he alone would be responsible for 10,000 casualties. Auersperg gave up. When he ordered the gunners to let the French pass unmolested, Oudinot moved up, dismantled the guns, cut the fuses of the mines, and held the bridge. The affair ended before two in the afternoon, without a single casualty on either side. Lannes never dwelt on his daring cleverness, because he considered it an integral—and unremarkable—part of his personality. Whenever he talked about the Tabor Bridge, he always emphasized the Austrians' complete gullibility, and said he did not understand how an enemy could have been so dumb.

The Capitulation of Stettin:

From Wikipedia but decently cited because I can't find the book I wanted to quote here lol. Also Romberg was later sentenced to life in prison for giving up Stettin without a fight, but died before the sentence began.

Lasalle marched to Stettin where he demanded its surrender in the early afternoon of 29 October. Lieutenant General Friedrich Gisbert Wilhelm von Romberg refused at first. At 4:00 p.m., Lasalle sent another summons to Romberg, this time with a threat of harsh treatment to the city. The French general claimed the Lannes' entire corps of 30,000 men was present. In fact, the V Corps advance guard got no nearer than Löcknitz that day. The elderly Prussian general entered negotiations and capitulated during the night of the 29/30 October. Romberg surrendered the Stettin fortress, 5,300 troops, and 281 guns. [...] Lasalle's entire force consisted of 800 horsemen of the 5th and 7th Hussar Regiments plus two cannons.

i love assigning dog breeds to people and characters so here are the dog breeds some dragon age characters would have/be

alistair: golden retriever is the obvious choice, but it can't be argued that it doesn't fit. a solid, field bred golden has the bidability, drive, and friendliness to work. not that i dont think he'd be willing to put in the work to train a more independent/intense breed, but that's just not something i could see him wanting in a dog. an active, athletic companion is his best fit.

morrigan: saluki. a dignified, elegant, but incredibly unique breed. i knew i wanted to assign her a sighthound bc they tend to be very independent dogs with a lot of drive, making them potentially difficult to train, but incredibly rewarding once you earn their loyalty. salukis are on the smaller side of sighthounds, and their ears make for a visually striking dog that really meshes well with morrigan.

leliana: brittany spaniel. i may be incredibly biased, but brittanys are by far some of the best dogs. they're highly intelligent and driven animals, while also being versatile hunters, and loyal family dogs. as with a lot of dogs, they'll take on some of the personality/energy of their owner, but with how much bittanys are not only able to do, but able to do well, this is a feature that meets our bard anywhere and any way she is. also they're french.

zevran: basenji. this was actually so hard to choose. i knew i wanted a terrier or another kind of small, intense hunter. basenjis are technically spitz type dogs, but they have similarities to terriers including their size, and high prey drive. they're very independent, however, and can be hard to train, though will become singularly attached to theit person, which is an energy i think zevran would relate to

sten: cane corso. large, intimidating, powerful, and assertive, this is one of the few breeds that could equal the future arishok. this is the kind of dog that i would be leery about calling a pet, as their high drive and intense nature could make them to be more of a comrade-in-arms or fellow soldier - a role that's a little more fitting for sten

wynne: yorkie. a small lapdog with a terrier's fiesty attitude, their small size makes them easier to handle, while their attitude would keep wynne on her toes. i think they could also be a functional breed for life in the circle, as they were originally bred as mousers. (also, funnily enough, a rather famous war hero yorkie was owned by a corporal william a wynne during ww2. which i just think is a fun coincidence)

Thank you for your answer! It was very informative and got me thinking. I think the issue some people have with Pitbulls being a very active, often intense dog, is that other people try and use it as an excuse to have the Pitbull and other bully breeds all banned or disappear.

I feel the myth of the nanny dog has hurt the breed as a whole, tho so has people who see their dog as just a object with no training. You mentioned that they are dog aggressive, but are there any breeds that a Pitbull can work well with? Or a most effective way of having them not be aggressive towards other dogs?

And regarding the Bully breeds as a whole, how do you feel about each or specific ones? As some are known to naturally be more intense than others, and do you feel there should be more classes for them, rather than calling all a Bully breed?

Something we must remember is that pit bull type dogs are only the most recent dog breed to go through this. They are absolutely not alone (before current day it was German Shepherds and Rottweilers that held this stigma) and most breed ban lists for apartments include huskies, malamutes and other primitives. I think breed bans are ridiculous frankly and I think the fear the pit bull will disappear is unfounded. Yes, they might not be as prominent or popular, but in my opinion that is a good thing, because then they might be owned in majority by people that can properly manage them.

Pit Bulls are by design dog aggressive. They are bred to see other dogs as prey as this is the drive that causes them to fight. Which is what they were bred for. There are many other dog breeds that are also genetically dog aggressive for various reasons be it guardian work or just in general primitive dog things (primitive dog breeds tend to be same sex aggressive). Dog aggression can be on a sliding scale of very to none at all and can also be indiscriminate between other dogs or gender specific. Most adult dogs of a majority of dog breeds are dog selective to a degree (meaning they don't adore all other dogs indiscriminately and only have a few close dog friends they mesh well with). The most affective way to have a pit bull not be aggressive towards other dogs is to manage them so they do not get the opportunity to be aggressive towards other dogs. This means no dog parks, muzzle training, reactivity training, probably not letting them off leash etc. The best type of dog to pair with a pit bull is a human being (the pit bull is supposed to be very soft with people).

I think "bully breed" is simply an overarching term for a bunch of related dog breeds, much how we use "spitz breed" to describe various types of northern dogs with different purposes that have a double coat, pointy ears, and a curling tail. The various breeds that fall under the bully category (and which breeds fall under this category changes depending on who you ask) are classified in breed registries depending on their original purpose. I don't think they need new classifications because this is how many related breeds that aren't the bully type dogs are broken down. (For example, both Greyhounds, English Foxhounds and Norwegian Elkhounds are in the hound group, but look distinctly different. They are however classified all as hounds due to their purpose, which is being used for hunting. A Norwegian Elkhound, Alaskan Malamute, and German Spitz are all spitz type dogs, but also serve very different purposes and are thus classified differently. The American Pit Bull Terrier and the French Bulldog are both commonly classified as "bully dogs" due to their history, but we can all agree they always have and still do serve different purposes).

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a recognized breed (UKC) with a breed club, breed events etc. and is in the Terrier group. I'm linking the standard HERE so everybody can get a good sense for what the breed should be.

2023/08/09 Después fuimos a Francia a pasar unos días en familia. Visitamos un pueblo de montaña muy bonito con una torre de reloj en todo lo alto. En la iglesia principal había cuadros y vidrieras.
