Am at limit with Youtube ads messing with Ublock Origin shenanigans. They doing too much.
Am use FreeTube app now (for watch stuff), with sponsorblock on in settings and the download options. (basically is like NewPipe app, but for PC)
Even if it mean following Freetube's instructions for export Youtube subscriptions and history and everything, later.
Main Website:
FreeTube Github
(Is still in beta)

I was pretty happy today to see that YT's "3 strikes and you're out" policy for adblockers had finally been rolled out to me. I have discovered the miracles of Freetube and actually figured it might be quite nice to have the video player blocked in my browser. I could watch videos in Freetube without invasive algorithms spying on me and copy the URL over to my browser if I want to interact with the comments or like the video - without the video player slowing things down. Sounds like a pretty good setup actually! I immediately reloaded the video 3 times to make sure I was blocked.
Too bad that uBlock Origin updated so quickly. My video player got unblocked, much to my annoyance. The uBlock team is too good, too fast! I use Brave for YT only and Firefox for everything else, so I have stopped uBlock's auto-update in Brave now. Hit me with that block, Google! I fear nothing!

if youtube is giving you problems with your adblocker, i highly recommend downloading freetube instead. it works just like youtube and allows you to access all the same videos, just without ads or privacy violations, and it's FREE.

For the love of everything holy & your Youtube experiences, do NOT UPDATE FIREFOX!
I made the mistake of updating last night and got greated by this shit this morrning:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So apparently, on vs.12... whatever Firefox's latest update is, good old Youtube decided 5 second delays & annoying pop-ups to complain about add blockers wasn't enough. Now they won't let you watch higher than 360p or 720 p (how generious of them).
And no, it's not my computer, because on Safari I get this:
Tumblr media
And it dose seem to be a latest Firefox version thing because, firstly, there's no reson Firefox would do THIS on purpose, & I got the old version back and...
Tumblr media
The good news is, a quick google search and you can find the last version to redownload & install over the updated version you have.
You will get a warning window upon lauch about needing to make a new profile or quit, I did that, logged in to my account and seemingly everything is there. So asides from having to log back into everything & change preference to dark mod, everything seems to be where I left it.
Also, changing auto updates to manual, is a great next step :P
I'm still really peeved tho.
I'll tollerate the ad noncess, but videos in 360p. On a new-ish computer display they're practically unwatchable! If I wanna watch a video in 360p & have it look good, I need to go dig up my old Mac White!
This. This is a step too far with you and your monopoly-wanting-coperate-bullshit. I won't switch to Chrome, and I won't stop using my ad blocker. But what I will do is stop using Youtube. So fuck you Youtube, here's my 2 minutes notice!
I'm switching to Freetube.
Tumblr media
Fuck you Google.

YouTube seems to be working again after my adblocker updated but suck it I already moved on, FreeTube is now my new best friend. Genuinely FreeTube is so good and the lack of algorithm helps make sure I don't get distracted :) I love that I can filter my subscriptions too so I have channels for different reasons and also of course no ads and such (plus I used it to download the new total drama eps that are up on YouTube teehee)

FreeTube is saving my life right now thanks to someone's suggestion on here. if youtube is pissing you off, look into it... it does everything you'd want from a video player with no fuss. It even has my two favorite youtube extensions built in: DeArrow and SponsorBlock. Also download LibRedirect and if you still want to browse youtube like normal or you are sent a video link, you can right-click and select the option to redirect to the video in a new tab with no ads
I am not an expert in these types of things, just a fed up youtube user and these solutions seem to really work.

so, i've been using FreeTube for the last few weeks, and it's been great! my laptop doesn't overheat anymore!!
but yesterday it started getting throttled to hell and back. same as the vanilla youtube-dl. it takes like 4 hours to download a 10 minute video 0_0 yt-dlp works fine, tho.
so the question is, do any of you know of an RSS reader that's easy to integrate with yt-dlp and some video player? ideally i would like my torrents, my youtube subscriptions, and other misc stuff (like xkcd) to be in the same place. and the RSS reader would automatically tell qbittorrent and yt-dlp to download the stuff.
what rss readers do people use anyway?

youtube-dl broke!!!
I cannot download anything with this anymore. Google API changeoids!
Here what I use now
Android or PC.
FreeTube
Want the APK?
FreeTube Cordova APK is only available on Izidroid F-Droid Repo, not the official F-droid right now.
E.g., you want to Download this video
youtube
Share, Copy URL. Or pick URL from address bar
In FreeTube, paste to the search bar.
Tumblr media
And you'll immediately open video
Tumblr media
Click Download,
Tumblr media
Since FreeTube couldn't merge best video & Audio properly, download more than 1 files there is to it:
Best Reference (720p 30fps video MP4)
Best Video (in this case 1080p60fps Video only, yours could be higher so pick that one)
Best Audio (usually the most bottom Audio Only)
Subtitle (the SRT on the most very mosr bottom if available)
It will open files directly in your Browser. Simply right click, save as.
Merge later or now with FFMPEG. Tutorial later idk how.
Enjoy, sorry it succ.
I used a wrong APK!
E.g. LibreTube.
This LibreTube APK
As you can see you would find this in F-Droid. Yes, official F-Droid repo.
The download file unfortunately when you download those video with this APK, the files are on Emulated SD Card, Android, then Data. Yes, Android Data folder instead of Gallery. Worse newest Android version forbid viewing this folder in a typical setting without root. But still can be viewed with MTP (connect to USB).
Connect your phone to PC by USB Data Cable.
(Windows) Open My Computer, your phone, internal memory, Android, Data. The LibreTube package is com.github.libretube so find the folder and open that. There is a folder called file, open that.
Tumblr media
Copy (do not cut, just in case) everything inside folder files.
Tumblr media
Paste these file out from your phone, e.g. your homework folder.
I think these are separated. You can merge those respective downloaded files later with FFMPEG. Again idk how. Sorry. Maybe later.
Enjoy, sorry it succ

As an additional suggestion: on my desktop computer I tend to use this app to watch YouTube without ads or tracking. All your preferences, profiles, and watch history are stored locally with no accounts needed. You can have multiple profiles for multiple purposes and switch easily between them. I find it frankly much more useful than default YouTube.
Here's uBlock Origin's official guide to bypassing youtube's anti-adblock popups, updated weekly. Please share widely. Don't reward google for their predatory anti-consumer bullshit
To summarize: 1. Get uBlock Origin and make sure it's updated to the latest version. 2. Click on the gear icon to get to the dashboard, go to "Filter lists", and make sure that "uBlock filters - Quick fixes" is up to date
Repeat those steps any time you get another popup (google and uBlock are having an arms race right now so it might stop working at any moment), and if you have any more problems, read the reddit thread for troubleshooting advice

I use FreeTube as an alternative to YouTube.
An open-source application: YouTube without registration and advertising!

So I've been using the uBlock Origin advice and keeping it updated, and also that filter that spoofs Chrome so that youtube doesn't delay my videos loading (so shitty of them, but also, do they think we're that impatient???)... but for some reason today I'm getting hit with YOU ARE A BAD PERSON FOR BLOCKING ADS, PLS DIE.
Which is why I wanted to let people know about Freetube as an option.
Basically it's an app that runs on your desktop and acts like youtube. You don't sign in, so Google can't take your data, but you can subscribe to all your favorite channels and watch them with zero ads. Saves your history just like youtube. You can even set up multiple profiles if that's a thing you want. Super simple to use and the only downside that I can see is you don't get that algorithmically-created homepage. Other than that I'm finding it a more than suitable replacement.

apparently freetube has this feature whereby if you copy a URL from it to your clipboard, it will clear it from the clipboard when you close the application.
the system clipboard. and it's smart enough to only clear it if it put something there. why is this a feature. this doesn't happen by accident. why

there might be some room for argument that adblockers are taking money away from ppl who dont deserve that if it wasnt for the fact that nearly every single ad you see nowadays is straight up malicious and harmful. unless you actually monitor what ads you let through, disallowing adblockers feels like a safety violation

i downloaded freetube and imported my subscriptions to there. it's a bit of a hassle but i cannot stomach these ads and i'm too tired to futz around with browser plugins. no thanks youtube, i'm not interested in get-rich-easy scams and fascist propaganda and glorified etsy products that'll be recalled for using a toxic material within five years
god, this is what youtube with ads is like now? two ads for starting the video? two ads for skipping to the middle of a video? two ads for leaving a video paused for a while and then pressing play again? two ads for beginning the video in the middle because it remembered your place and then another two ads for navigating back to the start?
