I literally download most of my ambient music these days. Ever since YouTube decided to start running ads on channels, whether they consent or not, it's become increasingly difficult to find ad-free ambient music.
And, like, it's not the fault of the creators. They're faced with two shitty options:
A: Have ads run on their channel and keep a portion of the proceeds.
B: Have ads run on their channel and Google keeps 100% of it.
So, like, I get it. I get why they have to chose to turn ads on, these days. But my smart TV doesn't have an ad-blocker, and it's where I like to play most of my music from since my TV's sound system is the best one I have.
So I usually use terminal apps like yt-dlp to download my ambient music. I then just play it over my Jellyfin server to replicate an ad-free YouTube experience. This is really the only tolerable way I can listen to ambient music, these days. Nothing is a bigger buzzkill than listening to calming, ambient music only to be interrupted by the loudest, brain-rotting ad you've ever heard.

I'd rather give up desktop youtube entirely than go back to having ads. I downloaded NewPipe on my phone the other day and there are no ads, it let's me play videos in the background, and I can download audio, so I don't need to go on my laptop anymore. The new "ad-blockers are not allowed" popup has a timer on it so you can't X out of it right away, and that's just about the final straw. Fuck google. Fuck youtube. Fuck ads. Fuck capitalism. My time is precious, and I'm not going to spend it staring at products I'm never going to buy.

hi there! do you use an ad blocker when watching shows online?
yes I do! Especially for youtube that's inevitable lol. I recommend ABP, uBlock, Adblock for Youtube and Ad Skip Master! Those work great, also for other sites.

My dad was helping me install an ad blocker on my laptop and instead of getting rid of the advert it just covered it up with slices of really pink ham. there was also the option of using cucumber slices too.

YOUTUBE EXODUS MASTERPOST
fuck youtube and fuck their anti-ad blocker policy. aside from advertisements being a capitalist nuisance where we are the actual product being sold, ads which contain flashing lights or otherwise triggering material can and do harm people, and youtube's decision to ban ad blockers will impact these folks the most. here I'm gonna talk about what I use to mitigate this bullshit!!!
DESKTOP - FREETUBE
Ublock and Youtube are basically in an arms race right now, and the instability and inconsistency of FF working with ad blockers isn't great. Today, I can't watch anything on desktop, it's totally blocked for me as long as I'm logged into my account.
I would recommend switching to Freetube, which is a client for youtube that runs on your computer, ad-free. You're able to import your subscriptions and search history, and a proper playlist function is in the works.
In order to export this stuff for Freetube, you'll need to log in to youtube and click on your icon. In the list that pops up, click "In order to export this stuff for Freetube, you'll need to log in to youtube and click on your icon. In the list that pops up, click "Your data in Youtube".
Tumblr media
From here, click on "Download Youtube data" on the dashboard card. You might have to click "see more" for this option.
Tumblr media
This is where we get particular. First, hit the button that says "All youtube data included"
Tumblr media
In the list that pops up, deselect everything except for history, subscriptions, and playlists. Then click okay, which will return you to that ^ page above. You then need to click "multiple formats", scroll down to history, and change the format to JSON.
Tumblr media
Once you've done that, you can click "next step" and decide if you'd like for the data to be emailed to you or put in your dropbox or whatever. all the files will be in a .zip folder, so extract them somewhere convenient, and if you plan on using Newpipe for your mobile device, KEEP THAT .ZIP FILE!
Once you've installed Freetube, go to settings -> data settings and import your subs. the file for this will be nested in a folder named "subscriptions" in the .zip file you extracted. Do the same thing with importing your history, but make sure to select the file that's named watch_history. importing playlists is not yet a feature for freetube, but I recommend downloading yours anyway.
From there, you're free to watch desktop Youtube, addless as God intended.
MOBILE - NEWPIPE
I've used newpipe for years now, and it's a game changer. You can download as audio or video files, play in the background with your phone locked, and still have your subs and playlists. it's lightweight and has a great UI.
The great thing about importing your subs and other info to Newpipe is that it's less fiddly. Go to your subs, and then tap the three dots in the right upper corner. Then tap import from, and select Youtube. Select the .zip file from earlier (you saved it, right?) and it should import all your stuff. If this doesn't work, Newpipe provides instructions on alternative ways to import your subs/playlists/etc on-screen.
Don't subject yourself to advertisements. You deserve better. Get Freetube, Get Newpipe, and if other people have suggestions, feel free to add it to this post!

i would rather kiss a 12 gauge shotgun than watch another unskippable bass boosted SHEIN ad with the worst music i've ever heard in my life.
how do i get rid of this dumb fucking pop-up? or is it because i'm using opera for these videos and they dickride google on the tip? bc i have my shit on with vivaldi and have no issues...was regretting the switch, but now opera can keep shoving youtube's fist up their fucking ass for all i care.

I like to make fun of the pop up ads of the early 90s and 2000s. They were intrusive, ridiculous, and really worked off the model of "if we flood everyone's screen with ads *someone* is bound to click on one."
We learned how to block those ads. And yeah then came more. Mobile game ads are atrocious, but you can usually buy the game to get rid of them. Website ads suck, but you can get an ad blocker. If people know something is an ad, someone is going to find a way to block them.
But how do I block an ad when the ad is a person?
I don't really use Tik Tok anymore because things have just been feeling... off? A little too curated. A little uncanny valley for genuineness.
If I see a Tik Tok of a cute "candid" moment, I don't know if it took 90 takes to make. If I admire a cool indie artist for making short films in their basement, I don't know if they secretly have a full-ass production team behind them. When the person teaching me tips to clean my kitchen suddenly starts to push their viewers towards a specific product... I don't know if it's to get a sponsorship or not.
I hate questioning every single human interaction I see online as a possible marketing scheme. Even if the goal at first is clout, clout is a commodity that can be turned into money. And corporations know that.
I feel like we never left the era of having our screens bombarded with those comically intrusive ads. Except now instead of the ads being a bunch of boxes on your screen, the ads are the intimate lives of people.
And to be clear, this does not include sponsored videos. When a content creator tells me they can only fund their videos by playing an ad, I get it.
But if I don't know it's an ad, how the hell am I supposed to block it?
(Also side note: this does not include small businesses trying to promote themselves! Self-promotion is great and I love seeing that shit on my dash!)

Reminder you can block ads in the Tumblr Android app for free by using ReVanced. You can download the APK from their GitHub and install the app, then download a Tumblr APK and select it for patching in the ReVanced app. Install Tumblr using the newly patched APK and you're good to go.

Honestly, the Community Notes on Twitter were such a good idea. Tumblr should really implement something similar considering the reading comprehension and doom scrolling issues on this site.
Oh, and btw, apparently, no, YouTube is not frying your CPU for having an adblocker installed. Basically every article reporting on it has updated showing that AdBlock and AdBlock Plus were the issues.
They pushed a bad update that caused excessive CPU usage. Other ad blockers like uBlock Origin were not affected. So, like, once again, a non-uBlock ad blocker was the source of the issue, not YouTube strengthening its anti-ad block measures. Who's surprised? Not me.

I added a bunch of recommended firefox extensions, and it caused youtube to implode entirely. I can't watch any videos anymore, the screen is just black. There appears to be a single frame of some youtube popup about ad-blockers but I can only see it for a split second when I refresh the page so I haven't been able to read what it says. I guess it's the same one that used to show up when they started cracking down on ublock origin, but now the popup is immediately hidden by my plugins and the video player refuses to function. I've said it before, and I stand by it now, I would rather give up desktop youtube than go back to ads. I've been using youtube since at least 2007, but they've finally driven me away. I still have access to it via newpipe on my phone, but this means I have one less distraction on my laptop. They really asked me to choose between loyalty to firefox and loyalty to google as if I wasn't ready to drop them like a fucking rock.
Good riddance!
