Resting in Memory

As the moon rises, the border between dead ans alive grows thin. The exhales of the pod fill the air, the noise the only sound in the still night. The living are not alone though, traveling with them, the family they lost. Gone, but not forgotten. 8 living whales surface, bodies almost touching. 14 spirits follow, traveling once more with their earthbound family.

This is a project that has spanned almost two months. It started as a warm up sketch of J38 Cookie, but slowly, more whales started being added as my ideas became stronger. Then I had to buy some white gouache and figure out how to mix it with my watercolors to get the opacity, color, and vibrancy that I wanted. Today was a painting day once I got done with school and this painting just seemed to paint itself.

The southern residents need salmon to survive, but they’re starving to death, unable to find the salmon they so desperately need. Their dwindling numbers only remind us that their time is running out. We’re watching extinction happen right before our eyes.

Similar to sharks, orcas play an important role in keeping the ocean and animal populations healthy & in balance. Sadly, the 74 remaining southern resident orcas in the Salish Sea are currently starving to death due to their prey, the chinook salmon, also being at an extremely low population number. There are 4 dams in the Snake River that are preventing the salmon from repopulating and thriving as they typically would. A perfect example of how farmed fish can hurt other species up (or down) the food chain is the relationship of fish farms on the west coast and the SOUTHERN RESIDENT KILLER WHALES!! This stunning group of Orcas is critically endangered and facing the very real threat of extinction, and that is tied DIRECTLY to salmon supply and the farmed salmon fisheries.⁠ ⁠ SRKW only eat Chinook Salmon. Sadly, the health and supply of the Chinook salmon is a serious problem, and one for the reasons is that the fish farms along the coast where these orcas live and hunt are littered with farmed salmon fisheries. The conditions that the farmed fish grow in are absolutely disgusting. Many different parasites and diseases are know to be present in these farmed fish. Since they are in ocean pens, these virus' and parasites easily spread to the wild salmon populations. The effects are catastrophic. Several SRKW have died over the last several years, and sadly, starvation has likely played a major role in that. In the coming weeks we will be dedicating an ENTIRE week to the SRKW!!! SOS! Our amazing friends @swimming_in_moonlight and @hauntedluminous have teamed up with us to create @pnwprotectors! These two live on the shores of the Salish Sea and, alongside the community of whale lovers in the Pacific Northwest, have witnessed firsthand the brutal decline of the Southern Resident Orcas. The recent death of J-52 "Sonic," a two year old orca calf, has made this situation even more critical and these animals need you to be a voice for them before it's too late. "You and me. We hold the power to make changes, collectively, together. This organization’s principles are steeped in the hope that real, lasting change can be made at an individual level to help protect and save and better steward our animals and our oceans. Sonic’s (J52) death was the tipping point for PNWProtector’s launch when news surfaced of the two year old Orca’s untimely death to the heartbreaking fate of starvation. I was standing by, hoping some person behind some invisible curtain would do something about the dwindling numbers of Salmon and the disappearing Orcas, when suddenly it dawned on me that the only lasting change starts individually and collectively. Today is step one. J-52’s memorial flyer is going to be displayed everywhere that allows me to post it in their place of business.
