The Helena diaz of it all has me fascinated. I’ve said for a long while that Eddie’s real issues are his mommy issues and this episode just cemented for me that we’re gonna explore that and deal with it.
Because it’s Helena who forced Eddie to grow up to fast - because her husband wasn’t around much - so she pushed Eddie into de facto parent and husband role ls - selfishly filling her needs and ignoring the damage it was doing to her son (it is a form of abuse in my book).
Eddie then had the audacity to fall in love with and marry Shannon and get her pregnant. It’s why Helena was always so off with Shannon - she was punishing her. She is also punishing Eddie for all of this and his refusal to return to El Paso only cemented further her bitterness and resentment.
Now she does have Ramon back she doesn’t need Eddie any longer to fill that role so she is still punishing him and part of that is tied into her glee over now getting to parent Christopher - something she has always been intent on doing the doppelgänger just gave her the opportunity- as well as allowing her to further punish her son and his love of Shannon.
Her barbed comments about building a pool were all about showing what she can provide Christopher - how she is parenting him better than Eddie - it’s part of her mind games - making Eddie feel like more of a failure as a parent to his son.
The reality of course is that the reverse is true - Helena’s parenting is all superficial, flash and showy - it isn’t the hard day to day parenting when things get tough and you have to be the bad guy. While Eddie has made mistakes, there is nothing superficial, flash, or showy about his parenting. It’s why bucks comments about Eddie being a great dad are so important.
Eddie feel like a failure right now and that he is entirely to blame for everything. But in reality, while he does bear a bit of the responsibility, the truth of the matter is that he needs to learn and deal with the fact that all of it actually stems from Helena and her abuse of her young son - Shannon never stood a chance just like Eddie never has.
#genuinely don’t see how she can get any sort of redemption arc#but this is 911 so maybe they’ll find a way 🤷🏻‍♀️#Helena’s treatment of Eddie is a form of child abuse - it has done so much damage to him psychologically#I do really hope we finally get to meet Sophia and adriana as part of this arc beciase I think it might be very revealing#I am also wondering if Ramon had a stache in the past - and that is what Eddie is subconsciously trying to mimic#and that is about him trying to regain his mothers affection - trying to fill that husband role she forced him into#and that shaving it off is a part of his dealing with that and choosing to free himself from her clutches#and in doing that - standing up for himself etc - it will be the trigger that v ring schristopher back#the catholic guilt and Eddie’s queerness is also all tied up in this - the church reinforces and condones Helena and her actions#the Catholic Church has a long history of abuse of children in all it’s horrendous forms#so Eddie seeking solace in that direction think it will help him find away back to Helena’s good books only for it to open a few doors he#has bolted shut#as for the queer aspect - forcing Eddie to grow up too fast and fill this role of husband to his mother and parent to his siblings means#Eddie never got the chance to learn who he actually is - to explore his sexuality and all that goes with that - at the age one normally#would - as a teenager and into your 20’s. it explains so much around his relationship with Shannon and dealing with the helana of it all#and the queerness of his identity - will also allow him to actually let Shannon go#Eddie’s arc is going to be incredible - heartbreaking and gut wrenching - but incredible#Helena diaz it’s on sight - she is evil and cannot be redeemed in my eyes!#911 spoilers#Thinky thoughts#eddie diaz#911 abc

you’ve got to be careful reading fantasy books that are also romances because when the horny scenes arrive they’ll say shit like “i had a dream you were still a godsinger, and i was your shrine” and “i may not be your queen, but i am yours, and you will find that i can be very generous”

i think my breaking point if I was told I was an elf and whisked away to the lost cities would be the leggings. like okay. my family isn't my family, there's a whole secret world, i'm the creation of a rebel organization, there's a different rebellion trying to kill me, the world is rotting from the inside out, okay. I can cope. it'd be annoying and difficult but I could cope. but you want me to wear leggings with everything? under skirts and dresses? with every outfit? no. fuck off I'm out I can't do this anymore

So Eddie wants "Chemistry". That's what he believes in. He wants what he had with Shannon, and yes he loved her to a certain degree, but it cannot be denied their relationship was NOT healthy, likely never was healthy, and was never going to be healthy. Hence why Shannon asked for a divorce, since she seemed to be the only one at the time who could recognize their relationship for what it was.
And Eddie himself fell into this trap when Shannon came back, feeling this "chemistry" with her that resulted in them falling into bed together multiple times, but never actually fixing or growing their personal relationship. Never mending their trust issues. It's just funny that Eddie was saying he wanted what he had with Shannon, when even he admits that it wasn't a healthy relationship. I'm not saying he's not allowed to look back on his relationship with her fondly, but I truly can't help but feel like he looks back on his ROMANTIC relationship with her with rose-colored glasses.
Now back to Chemistry. It's kind of a nebulous phrase, doesn't really have a clear meaning. To me, chemistry is often something that comes in the early stages of a relationship. Kind of like infatuation, or butterflies or "magic" like Eddie says (let's be fucking real Eddie and Shannon were not magic).
I'll bring it back to this chart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any way you look at it, it comes out like this.
Eddie:
Shannon- highly emotional, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to find happiness, in love with "emotion".
Ana- sudden, idealistic, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks (ie. she's exact what I should want), seeking to get
Marisol- sudden, idealistic, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, seeking to get
Buck:
Abby- highly emotional, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks, in love with "emotion"
Ali- sudden, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to get
Taylor- highly emotional, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks, seeking to get
Natalia- literally the entire "infatuation" column.
Now Buck and Eddie? I could write a dissertation on how they fit into literally every single point listed in the "love" column.

I'm curious as to why you think Lou was directed to only call Buck Evan? I assumed it was because Tommy is meant to be seen as different (beyond him being the only man) than all of Buck's previous LIs and that was one way of highlighting that. I'm just not sure why else he would call him Evan when no one else close to him does.
i mostly think it was because it was early in their relationship/arc. buck introduces himself as evan to people, he had previous LIs call him evan (tho not exclusively). in that post my point was mostly that i don't think the writers consider what the name evan/buck means to buck as much as we do and try to fit it into a coherent throughline for the character or a broader context. for example i dont think they were considering the implications of that scene where buck tells his parents not to call him evan when they wrote tommy's dialogue or even rolling back a step, i dont think they were thinking of that scene when they wrote eddie calling him evan that one time. at most they were thinking "yeah this'd be a cute intimate thing" without the broader context. we treat character lores more hollistic, that's why you get a million word meta about tommy calling buck evan is a sign the ship is doomed from the antis and get a million word meta about tommy calling buck evan being a sign he's special from us referencing unrelated moments from the show - i simply dont think the writers think about it as much.

Calling it now - this episode is going to really play on the buck wanting kids and Eddie and his constant saving children (and his want for more kids) and play on them wanting to give kids what they didn’t get themselves as children - that’s why Eddie is always first in to save kids and why we’re getting a buck and Jee baking scene.
It’s all about parenthood - the desire to be a parent (to have their kid back).
I think the sperm donor arc might be coming back into play for buck - and be part of the issues that arise with tommy - buck wanting kids v Tommy not wanting them etc.

"The second edition of AD&D was finally released in early 1989. Many of the changes turned out to be cosmetic. One of the biggest was that the sizes of the Player’s Handbook (1989) and Dungeon Master’s Guide (1989) were reversed. Back in 1978 Gygax had decided that it was best if the players did not know the rules, and so the original Player’s Handbook was a skeleton that didn’t even detail combat. Now the entire roleplaying industry had accepted the fact that players and gamemasters were united in games — not adversaries — and the new rules reflected this. [...]
Perhaps most surprisingly, the rules were once again presented as “guidelines” — a reversal from Gygax’s original goal for the AD&D lines. Finally, the character classes were indeed cleaned up, with Arneson’s assassin and monk eliminated.
Though Cook had said that assassins were removed due to problems of party unity, their excision has always been seen by the public as part of TSR’s well-documented attempt to make AD&D more public friendly — TSR’s only allowance to the religious hysteria that had shadowed the game throughout the 1980s. Half-orcs were similarly removed as player characters, and demons and devils were eliminated entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
James M. Ward, who had instituted the removal of demons and devils, explained in Dragon #154 (February 1990) that “[a]voiding the Angry Mother Syndrome has become a good, basic guideline for all of the designers and editors at TSR, Inc.” Apparently, TSR had received one letter a week complaining about the demons and devils since the original Monster Manual was printed, and those 624 letters, or what Ward called “a lot of letters,” had been the reason he’d removed the infernal races.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The readers were not amused, and to his credit Ward printed many of their replies in Dragon #158 (June 1990). One reader stated that the decision “becomes censorship when an outside group dictates to you … what you should print.” The release of the Outer Planes Appendix (1991) for the Monstrous Compendium assuaged some of the anger because it restored demons as “tanar’ri” and devils as “baatezu,” but some fans left D&D entirely as a result of this decision."

"That strike was meant for a head," she muses, "but it wasn't meant for my head."
Beatrice twists her feet against the ground, settles her shoulders back, assumes a resting posture. "No," she confirms, because it's the truth, because since leaving Rome she hasn't been able to lie to Ava about anything, because she'd reached up to grab a hand and it hadn't been Ava reaching back, "it wasn't."
