you’ve got to be careful reading fantasy books that are also romances because when the horny scenes arrive they’ll say shit like “i had a dream you were still a godsinger, and i was your shrine” and “i may not be your queen, but i am yours, and you will find that i can be very generous”

I don’t know who is interested in this take but the most beautiful part of “A Day of Fallen Night” wasn’t something mentioned in the book. Glorian’s arc ends with her being desperate for her daughter to not have to suffer like she did but not having much hope. But there is a titbit from “Priory” I remembered throughout all of the prequel. There was a Queen who got together with one of her own handmaidens after she relinquished her throne to her daughter. This Queen is Glorian’s daughter Sabran. So it seems like the way Glorian raised her daughter lead to Sabran following her own happiness beyond having to give birth.

re reading “The priory of the orange tree” and seeing the line that all the Berethnets look a like but there are small differences made my “Glorian Shieldheart has freckles and curly hair” self leap with joy, THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR HER TO LOOK LIKE HER FARTHER IN SOME WAY

I have a lot of fondness for Priory, but having just read it, I think A Day Of Fallen Night blows it out of the water as a book. Very very cool to me how Shannon managed to take overall similar events and set pieces and write two extremely different books; tpotot was very narrative-driven, while adofn is an amazing character piece. Something about taking a group of characters who are some of the most central people in civilization-defining, world-spanning events, and then having those events take a back seat to their own internal experiences and relationships with society is just so cool.
Of course, what no one bothered to mention to me ahead of time is that it’s a deeply sad novel about the horrors of womanhood? Some real “haha yes the Locked Tomb is about lesbian necromancers in space, pay no mind to the horrors of love behind the curtain” energy on that one. The absolute dramatic irony of Glorian’s situation, knowing that for all of her pain, the same trauma is going to be inflicted for how many more generations to continue preserving a lie? Just heartbreaking. Of course, I’m into that in books so it’s all good.

Once again I have to say. Tunuva is so unbelievably beautiful to me. she’s strong mentally and physically, she’s a lover, she has piercings, she’s tender, she’s introverted, pensive, she’s got freckles and a mole right at her cupids bow, she’s got so much grief, and she has the biggest heart. She deserves the entire world. The part where she finally had all she wanted in one place broke me.

the way nikeya is a “flower grown for court” but dumai wants nothing more than to get away from there, how it ends with nikeya on the throne and her essentially taking over dumai’s role/rejected duty as the ruler of seiiki and having to bear the burden of continuing the bloodline in dumai’s stead. how dumai’s name (“an ancient word for a dream that ends too soon”) is symbolic and foreshadowing. (the dream as her literal dream connection to glorian, as the sterren in her, as her connection to the gods/dragons, as her life (both in general and the life she had on mount ipyeda)). the way dumai takes back her life and becomes maiden officiant, the thing she always dreamed of being. dumai of ipyeda became noziken pa dumai, but she finally becomes dumai of ipyeda again. I fear I’m losing my mind
