The Mark of Athena except, instead of it being a coin given to Annabeth by Athena/Minerva, it’s a tattoo burned onto her forearm. Hear me out.
The tattoo has a tribal design of an owl, an olive branch, and the Greek letters A.Θ.E on it. And it's carved and burnt onto her skin. It glows red when Annabeth’s alone on her quest, and it would slightly hurt as the red glow would also be burning on her skin. It would look like a regular tattoo on her arm when it’s not glowing.
Their encounter would’ve been like:
Athena grabbed Annabeth’s right arm and dugged her nails onto them causing a burning sensation surging through her arm. “Follow the Mark of Athena,” She said. “Avenge me.”
“Mom
” Annabeth winced in pain as Athena’s nails dugged deeper into her skin. “What are you talking about? What mark?”
Then she saw the mark Athena meant. Her mother was placing the mark on her. On her skin, she saw a drawing of an owl, an olive branch and the greek letters, A.Θ.E. It looked like it was carved and burnt onto her skin.
“Avenge me or leave me.” Athena had said.
Annabeth had to pull herself from her mother’s grasp and ran without looking back.
She had tried scrubbing and washing it off, but to no avail. And ever since that day with Athena/Minerva at Grand Central, she only wore long-sleeved shirts to hide the mark on her forearm, as it would only remind her of her last encounter with her mother.
She didn’t tell anyone about it. Not the Head Counselors, or her siblings, not Jason, Piper, and Leoher crewmates in the Argo II before sailing for New Rome, and not even Chiron.
Annabeth tugged her shirt's sleeve when Ella the harpy recited the prophecy concerning the Mark of Athena fearing anyone will know about it. Wisdom’s daughter walks alone, the Mark of Athena burns through Rome

She discovered that the mark on her arm glowed a fiery red while she was at Fort Sumter in Charleston. There was also a mark of Athena that glowed on the walls when she became trap inside a dark room with the mark burning spiders away.
No one else knew about it until Piper asked her what the Mark of Athena was while the seven of them were in a meeting in the Argo II's mess hall. She pulls out her sleeve and shows it to the rest of the seven. Some of them were fascinated by it to the point where Leo says it’s dope and I want one! Others, particularly Hazel and Percy recognizes that it looked like it was burnt on her skin.
After the 2nd Giant War, the tattoo faded and now permanently looked like a wine-stain birthmark after the Athena Parthenos was returned to the Greeks and placed on Half-Blood Hill.
Her Dad, Frederick freaked out when he saw the birthmark-esque tattoo, and her cousin, Magnus basically snorted and said, Your mom placed a mark on you? Oh, my gods, Couz, what did you do?
So, yeah, just a thought. 😊

63 mistaken for a couple. 77. Percabeth, of course.
77) In Vino Veritas
Thank you to @phykios for the inspiration!
Annabeth was an affectionate drunk. This was a well-known fact. Strawberry wine on a Summer night at camp. Mead during a Yule Feast, or Downeast when the Pats were in the playoffs. Annabeth became cuddly and smiley, and would tell people she loved them about 15 times a minute.
Piper knew that, and should probably had considered it before her friend had downed so many dirty martinis. Drunk Annabeth was fine for a normal girl’s night. But this was not just a normal girl’s night. It had evolved, from dinner to dancing to a lesbian bar where Annabeth swore she’d wingman Piper.
But now, 3 martinis deep, she keep hugging Piper, laying her had on Piper, kissing Piper’s cheek. Every time someone approached them, she was not effusive in her praise, telling everyone about how Piper was pretty and funny and fun. It was not having the effect she probably expected.
The first time a hot woman had come up and told Piper that her girlfriend was cute, she’d kind of laughed about it. The fifth time, she started to get worried.
“Are you and your girlfriend poly?” Ari, who had a sleeve abstract tattoos and an eyebrow ring, asked, nodding to Annabeth, who had just left Piper’s side to go back to the bar and probably get started on another martini, when this one inevitably flopped, Piper should head to the bar and ask the bar tender to just give her olive brine going forward. Annabeth wouldn’t mind that at all.
“She’s not my girlfriend,” Piper said. Just in time for Annabeth to come back and throw and arm around Piper’s shoulders.
“She’s amazing,” Annabeth announced.
“Does she know that?” Ari asked, “I think you two have a lot to talk about.” And then nodded to Piper and walked away.
“Oh no,” Annabeth said. “You’re too good for her.”
Piper sighed, “What are the chances we have sex tonight?” Piper asked, thought she knew the answer.
Annabeth stepped back, like she’d been pushed, “What? I’m married.” She said, “You were at my wedding.” She said it like it was a reminder, like she was confused Piper had forgotten. “And you are very pretty, and very funny, and very nice. But Percy is prettier, and funnier, and nicer.” She reached out and patted at Piper’s head, not unlike how Piper had seen Annabeth do to her daughters, “you’ll find someone though. I know it. You’re wonderful.”
“Well, I want some pussy tonight, so I’m going to need you to stop scaring them off.”
“How could I scare them off? I keep talking about how great you are and how much I love you.”
“I’m calling Percy,” Piper said as her only answer.
Annabeth’s eyes lit up at his name “Oh, yes! You need to call Percy. I miss him so much. He would have fun with us.”
Piper wasn’t sure what Percy’s reaction to a lesbian bar would be. Given details Annabeth had shared in the past, probably just swapping tips for cunnilingus.
She dropped Annabeth off at the bar, and ordered her a martini glass full of brine and olives that she knew would keep Annabeth busy.
And then she called Percy, “Hey, she’s kind of drunk, can you come get her?”
“Is she ok?” He was clearly freaked out.
“She’s fine.” Piper said, “but she’s drunk and cuddly and its scaring off all the hot honeys in the bar.”
“Hot honeys?”
“Can you just come get her.”
“Let me see if Frederick can come watch the kids. He probably will.”
15 minutes later she got a text that said “On my way.” In that time, Annabeth had announced to a set of truly beautiful butches that she loved Piper and was so glad they met.
He could not get there soon enough.
Piper had managed to chill Annabeth’s declarations, mostly by way of a bowl of olives and plate of mozzarella sticks occupying her mouth instead of Annabeth driving away all the women Piper might be able to bring home tonight.
Where are you? Percy finally texted her.
And then it was about 30 seconds before she spotted him from the bar. Piper tapped Annabeth’s shoulder, and then pointed at Percy.
She let out a screech, and then ran to him, practically jumping on him. Percy caught her easily, and his own grin grew. Piper could tell that Annabeth was still eating, but she also pressed her lips to his.
And then hands started to wonder.
“Hi,” Piper turned to fine Ari back, looking at them, “Um
so you two really weren’t together?”
“Nope,” Piper said, “That’s what she looks like when she’s actually into someone.”
“Can I get you a drink.”
Piper glanced back at Percy and Annabeth, she saw one of his hands disappearing up and one down. She wondered if she should intervene, tell them to take their heterosexuality home. But figured they would figure it out. Or they wouldn’t.
“I would love that.”

Hiding, Denying
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Ao3
Summary: Annabeth wants to tell their friends about the baby until she doesn't
Luckily Annabeth spends most of her days behind a desk. During the last half of her second trimester, the morning sickness begins to subside a bit. Now that she wasn’t hiding her morning sickness at work, the next hurdle was the bump.
Since that first morning spotting it, the bump grows more and more prominent.
She starts with lightly untucking her button downs, adding a little extra space in that tummy region. In following weeks, it’s baggier pants. Then it’s empire waist sundresses all summer long, which hang over her bump but don’t show it.
Annabeth keeps herself tucked in her office (not unusual for her) and holds most of her client meetings in house instead of on site. If her coworkers are still in the dark, there’s no way she’s revealing her pregnancy to their clients.
Mid-July, Annabeth feels ready.
They’ve already told Sally and Paul over their weekly Sunday dinner, Annabeth’s parents and brothers at Easter, and Estelle over mini golf and ice cream and a long winded explanation of what it means becoming an aunt. They had a short beach meeting with Posideon, though it seemed he already knew. After a few tries, Annabeth managed an Iris Message to Athena.
They had tracked Grover down too. Found a time to catch up and have some lunch together in the middle of Central Park. If it was even possible, Grover cried more than Sally and Frederick.
She wishes Piper and Frank and Hazel were closer. They’d love to tell them in person. Then, Annabeth realizes they can.
“Percy,” Annabeth says one night. “I want to take a trip.”
He peeks his head out of the bathroom. Toothbrush his mouth, he says, “when?”
She shrugs, “next week?”
With school out of session, it’s no problem for Percy to up and leave and Annabeth’s got plenty of PTO to burn through. She wants to save most of it for when maternity leave runs out but there’s enough that she can take a few days for a little trip.
So, she puts in the time off request, it’s approved almost immediately, and they book some flights. (Zeus has been a slightly more lenient in allowing Percy to fly nowadays)
The perk of knowing the higher ups at Camp Jupiter means they always have a place to stay out in California. Frank even makes a point to meet them as soon as they arrive.
“Hey guys! You made it,” he says.
It’s been a while so they hug. There’s a moment of panic when Annabeth’s bump hits Frank’s stomach.
Frank opens his mouth but Annabeth never lets him say anything.
“Sorry, big lunch.”
Percy looks at her funny. As if to say “I thought we came here to tell people?”
Frank, bless him, doesn’t say anything as he walks them to their weekend apartment.
“We’ll see you later Frank,” Annabeth continues, pulling Percy along.
When they’re safely inside their apartment for the weekend, Annabeth dramatically throws herself onto the sofa, sighing loudly.
“What was that?” Percy asks.
“Please.”
She didn’t even know what she was pleading for.
“If you don’t want to tell them, it’s okay with me but we’ll need a cover story because they’re all going to wonder why we’re here.”
The thing was Annabeth did want to tell their friends. She had no idea why she couldn’t just tell Frank earlier.
Their families had taken the news so well. She’d never seen her dad so happy. He actually cried when they told him.
She knew their demigod family would react similarly.
Instead of dealing with her weirdness, she reached a hand up and pulled Percy onto the sofa with her. She had to stretch more now to kiss him with her bump getting in the way but sitting down, Annabeth still held control. She straddles his lap and holds his head in place with one hand to the back of his head. Percy is so easily distracted by kissing when Annabeth pulls away he doesn’t even bother asking more questions as she trails her lips down his neck.
“Bed?” She asks.
Percy picks her up and carries her to the bedroom.
He breaks their kiss when he deposits her on the edge of the bed, “you’re not getting out of this conversation with sex.”
“Can’t we pause it to have sex first?”
He answers with a furious kiss to her collarbone.
An hour later finds them back on the sofa. Decidedly not making out.
Annabeth’s changed into a sundress, something she’s sure Piper will comment on at dinner tonight. She rarely wore dresses. But it hides her bump better than shorts.
“We have 20 minutes before we need to be there, let’s chat.”
She doesn’t want to meet his eyes but she does. It’s Percy. Anything Annabeth says, he’ll understand. He might laugh a little but it’s never in a mean way.
“What if they judge us?”
Percy doesn’t laugh. His reaction is worse than laughter; it’s pitiful, it’s worrisome.
“Annabeth,” he says, gently, “what makes you think that?”
“We’re so young, Percy.”
“And? We’ve known each other since we were 12. Together since we were 15. Most of our friends have only known us as a couple. This isn’t going to be a surprise for them.”
He’s right. Of course he is. Because deep down, Annabeth knew they’re friends were going to be nothing but excited for them.
But a few days ago allowed for doubt creep into her mind.
In true Percy fashion, he reads her mind, “so what happened to make you think they would?”
In true Annabeth fashion, she had kept this bottled inside letting it linger in her mind, creeping into her head when she was trying to fall asleep. When she knew if she let Percy in, share the burden, she’d be past this feeling already.
“How are we supposed to be good parents? I’ve been royally screwed up by mine. Sure, my dad’s better than he was but my childhood
well what childhood did I really get?”
“I think my mom did the best she could,” Percy says, avoiding the topic of his former-step father and the lack of seeing his biological dad, “and I think you were a great sibling to your cabin. Being an older sister is very similar to being a mom.”
Annabeth smiles a little. “And you know that from all your experience as an older sister?”
“Being an older brother taught me some things.” he shrugs.
“This isn’t what’s bugging you though,” Percy says, “maybe it’s connected but being worried about us being good parents isn’t the same as our friends judging us for having this baby.”
“Remember when I went to camp on Tuesday?”
“Yeah, to see Chiron about updating the Big House?”
“Well, after we were done, I went for a walk. Reminiscing
”
She had also gotten herself a larger camp shirt for the bump, which is now too large to fit in the ones she has.
“And I passed these campers who were talking about kids and stuff. Long story short, they don’t think it’s okay for demigods to be having kids young.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t hear it all,” she replies, in truth she had gotten too upset and went to the beach to calm down. “Essentially they called it irresponsible because we’re always at risk, y’know? And being a baby into this messy world
what if we’re terrible for doing this?”
“Annabeth, they’re teenagers, what do they know about this messy world? What do they know about us and what we’ve faced?” Percy tells her, “we’ve done some pretty dangerous stuff. I think parenthood will be a cakewalk in comparison.”
“But what if we’re just putting this child into
”
“Nope, stop that.” Percy pulls her closer. “You’re going to be a killer mom, whether it’s literal or not. You got this. Right here,” he puts their hands on her bump, “is the luckiest baby in the world because it’s got you on their side.”
Annabeth wipes away her tears. He’s right and as usual she’s heard exactly what she needed to hear. Percy has perfected that over the years.
“Let’s go tell our friends we’re pregnant,” she tells him.
Percy kisses her cheek and she finally feels ready to let the world know she’s going to be the best damn mom she can be.

Claude Rains Character Masterlist!
Here's a handy-dandy guide of all the wonderful characters Claude Rains has portrayed over a nearly seven decade long career. We encourage all to have a gander at all these invisible men, prefects of police, fathers, criminal masterminds, otherworldly beings, and men of history alike! Each link will take you to a picture of that specific character, so even if you're not familiar with them, you can send in propaganda anyhow (such as 'what a lovely wig!', 'astonishing facial hair!', or even 'such a beautiful hat!'). We also realize that two of these characters share a name - John Stevenson (from The Last Outpost and Strange Holiday, respectively), so when submitting propaganda for these characters, please indicate which one! We will try our best to sort through the submissions regardless!
List is in chronological order, however, we are omitting for reasons explained in the pinned post the characters of Clarkis from Build Thy House and The Mayor from The Pied Piper of Hamelin!

"What Kind Of Love Are You?" OC Quiz & "Every OC List Got The ___"

Four results for my OCs for this quiz and four OC Lists for four of my series.
JOAQUIN COBALT (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)
Tumblr media
This feels accurate for Joaquin considering he begins The UnTitledverse as an adolescent, and the series follows his growth and youth to adulthood. Joaquin has the weight of the world (or rather multiverse) on him, but, he still has time to be a child, to be a teen, to be his own identity, with Maisie, Mario, Calvin and all his found family and friends to share the weight.
SILVA OMAR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES [FAR CRY 5 & FAR CRY NEW DAWN])
Tumblr media
Religious themes (including the trauma) for Silva go brrr! Like what else is there to say?
HAOYU ANABUKI (LIFE, DESPAIR & MONSTERS)
Tumblr media
Yeah this makes sense for them. Haoyu is someone who's not used to love and when it comes it is gonna be the most life-changing thing for them. For once something they will have to make a commitment towards keeping if they want it. Haoyu is also the type to go in a panic as well as overthink; including full-on denial.
MARISSA "RESS" BISHOP (A RADIOACTIVE CALAMITY OF LOVE, BOMBS & GORE [FALLOUT])
Tumblr media
While this definitely suits Ress at her best, I don't think it encapsulates everything about her. Because while Ress' love is bountiful and ageless and endless... there's also the fear of losing it all, because Ress will outlive everyone she knows because her own natural mortality outlasts everyone else's. The only person that would be around the longest with her (and meet her at what would be considered old age for a hybrid species like them) would have been her older half-brother, Ore... but even that is cruelly taken away from her by their father Urias and his Occult. Yeah, so while this definitely does shine a light on the happiness and thrill Ress would feel with her lover (prime example being Piper), it doesn't acknowledge the grief she'd eventually have to face.
Now for the OC List, I decided to go with OCs from all four/five of my series; The UnTitledverse, The Silver Chronicles, Life, Despair & Monsters and a shared list with my Fallout series A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore and my original series An Old Ballad Of Chance And Ember Hearts Trilogy (which includes my Wings And Horns WIP that this trilogy spins off from). So yeah... enjoy! [NOTE: This will include art/doodles, reference pictures (for the art/doodles that I still haven't been skilled enough to draw) and faceclaims]:

I uploaded this chapter last year, but I'm just now posting it here! I'm going to be doing this with the rest of them over the next couple of days :P
"One bite and five days are all it took for the world to come to an end. Nearly two months after an unexplainable, violent illness swept throughout the globe like a raging wildfire, after cities have crumbled to ruin and most of humanity has been wiped out, only a few survive. Some of those still alive are just trying to survive, while others are searching for an answer—a reason why and what caused people to turn into walking, cannibalistic corpses that decay but never seem to truly die. Now, a group of survivors—a dog, few adult figures, and a bunch of teenagers—search for a cure and must figure out how to live with the undead amongst them, and how to deal with each other as relationships strain and tensions rise."

Annabeth
I am so lost. Worst of all, I’m alone—with about twenty reanimated corpses chasing after me like they haven’t eaten in decades. (Based on the thick, dark red blood dribbling down their chins, though, I doubt it.) Despite my own desperate situation, I’m pleading and praying that Thalia, Luke, and Leo—all of them—are okay. How did we even get split up? We were all next to each other this morning, then—God, they all came out of nowhere.
The undead snarl and snap their jaws at me, showing their rotting, foul teeth—the insides of their mouths black and corroded, filled with flies and their larvae. The thundering of their clumsy, heavy steps gets louder and I snap my head back to see the growing crowd. I bite back a curse. My legs are throbbing and ache from the exertion, threatening to give out on me at any moment. Obviously, I can’t keep running forever. But I also can’t stop unless I want to get torn apart.
I’m reaching an intersection and take a sharp right turn.
Bad idea.
My feet nearly slip out from under me as I scramble backward, running away from the cluster of walking cadavers and back the way I came. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the horde almost right next to me, snarling and outstretching their decaying arms toward me in a horrific embrace. My lungs sting as if I’m trying to breathe in hot, rusty air, the eye-watering stench of rotten flesh burns my nose as a half-decomposed hand claws at the back of my shirt, tearing a hole in it as I pull away. I yelp, forcing myself to push through the aching pain.
I turn another corner (thankfully, one without any ghouls), chucking some food from my backpack down the street as far as I can throw it, and slip into a shadowy, narrow alleyway, skidding to a stop. With my breathing ragged and unsteady, I have a hard time staying silent as I press my back flush against the hot brick wall, sweat running down my temple. Almost as soon as I step into the alleyway, the stampede of rotting corpses rushes past me, none of them appearing to have noticed me. For who knows how long—it’s hard to estimate time when you’re playing a lethal game of hide-and-go-seek tag—I’ve been rushing through Midtown, a labyrinth fallen to ruin, with only a few breaks (to say that I’m exhausted would be an understatement). And yet I still have a lot further to go to get out of here. Well, if I manage to. Honestly, I should be dead right now.
After listening for a minute or two, I exhale, collecting my wits before peaking around the corner. I sink to the dirty alleyway floor, a rat scurrying past me, and take a few minutes to catch my breath. As much as I want to rest here and not move for the foreseeable future, I need to get further away from the undead that are feasting on something—or someone—and completely ignoring the pack of beef jerky I threw. Rude. I take a quick swig of my water—quenching the dry, sandpaper feeling in my mouth—readjust my pack on my shoulder, and start walking down the alley, taking the opportunity to ease up a bit and give my legs a break.
After carefully walking a few blocks away from the horde, I found a safe place to rest and eat something. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until my stomach growled and scared the hell out of me. From my hiding spot behind the dumpster, I pull out the little bit of food that’s left in my bag: a grand feast of a fourth of my water and a sandwich. Go figure, I think to myself. Even though I tried to conserve my rations for the past few days, it was a pathetic notion, thinking I could manage, really; I hadn’t had that much, to begin with.
How is this going to work?
After pondering it for a minute or two, I decided to only eat as much as necessary to keep myself from passing out. Almost a month into the apocalypse, it’s hard to find anything. Especially in the city.
While I was staring off into space, I failed to notice the low snarling from my right. I sharply turn my head, peeking through the crack behind the dumpster. I don’t see anything... A horribly mutilated face meets mine, gnarling and screeching as it tries to reach its arm through the small gap. I fall backwards and bump into the other dumpster behind me with a loud thud, but quickly stand up. The one got itself stuck, its skin tearing off its arm as it still tries to grab at me, except the three down the alley aren’t and are already making their way toward me. I turn on my heel and bolt, my pack unzipped and its contents spilling out.
Thankfully, I make it out of the alleyway.
On the other hand, after I make it out, I trip over a raised chunk of concrete on the sidewalk and go sprawling forward, a sharp, blistering pain shooting up from my ankle as it fails to turn with the rest of my body. The side of my head bangs against the bumper of a dusty red sedan, sending a rattling feeling throughout my body—I’m only vaguely aware of the sensation of blood on the side of my head. Stars swim in my vision, but I can’t blink them away. In my dazed state, I can see (and hear) the small yet approaching group and start hacking away with my bronze dagger, praying that I’m hitting my targets. One falls on top of me, but I push the heel of my hand against its gross, rotting forehead, trying to keep its snapping jaws at bay. I plunge my dagger into its rotten pumpkin-like skull and roll it off of me.
Did it bite my arm? God, no—please. I’m not sure.
My vision inevitably clears and I manage to find my balance and stand to take down the last two undead barreling at me; I stab the first, my blade making a squelching sound when I pull it out and shove it aside as the second clumsily races forward.
Closer... Closer... THUMP!
I step out of the way at the last second, shoving the half-dead man face-first onto the hood of the car. Grabbing it by its thin, greasy hair, I pull it back and bash his head against the car over and over again until its brains splatter the hood. Then the car alarm goes off. I let go of the man carelessly, limping to the driver’s side of the car. Locked. Damnit.
I feel something trickle down my lip. I wipe my upper lip with the back of my hand, only to see blood. Great. First, my ankle, then my head, and now my nose. I’m practically a walking “Eat Me” sign.
The setting sun glares at me, and I'm only now aware of the number of dead bodies lying behind me. If there were that many earlier, who knows how many will come out—especially with the blaring car alarm.
The world seems to tilt, and my body sways as a wave of vertigo washes over me. This isn’t good, I think as I cling to a street lamp for stability. Nightfall is coming, and I’m exposed here, out in the open. And in the middle of Manhattan, to boot. Just my luck. Turning my head as quickly as it will let me, I look for somewhere to hide for the night.
I can hardly think straight... The sudden urge to vomit overwhelms me, but I choke it back down. No. Please, please, please, not now. If I got bit I swear— No. I’ve got to get a grip. ‘Panic’ is not in my vocabulary. ‘Logic’ is, however, and I need to use that right now. I make a mental note of it: Plan now, panic later.
First things first, I need to find shelter and then deal with my injuries. A barricaded apartment building catches my eye. It looks safe enough. Well, for the most part. There are a few broken windows and boards torn off and chunks of brick missing. Other than that, however, it appears pretty much untouched compared to everything else. It’s not my brightest idea, but I only have two options in my concussed state: stay in the open street, or go into the decimated apartment building, which may or may not be inhabited by the living dead.
I look both ways—fuck, I feel awful—catching a glimpse of three ghouls down the street. Since they have likely been dead since the start, their vision should be terrible. Still, to be safe, I jog across the road (more like hobble, given the state of my ankle), hiding behind various objects until I’m sure the coast is clear.
When I make it to the apartment, I only hesitate for a moment before crawling under a wooden board.
†††
I grip the railing as I begin ascending another flight of stairs, my knuckles white and palms clammy. My footfall echoes throughout the stairwell and I cringe with each step as the sound bounces from wall to wall. Could they be any quieter? Every breath sounds louder than it probably is and my footsteps thunder against the metal stairs. Having said that though, I haven’t seen or heard anything in the ten minutes I’ve been in here, so that’s a good sign.
I hope.
A white-hot fire burns in my legs, snaking its way up from my ankles to my hips. I haven’t had a chance to look at it, but I can already tell I hurt my ankle pretty bad.
Finally, I reach the third floor. (The stairs weren’t too bad, but with the condition I’m in, it was absolutely exhausting.) A dirty window at the end of the hallway allows the dim, fading sunlight to shine through as the only source of light. It looks, well, abandoned; papers, trash, clothes, and broken glass are scattered through the hallway with dried blood everywhere. On the walls and the floor, really the only sign that there were ever people here. A child’s toy is laying on a dark—almost black—stain on the floor, covered with so much blood that it took me a minute to figure out what it was.
I shiver at the sight, my skin crawling, and quickly avert my eyes to the woman dressed in a dirty, torn green dress appearing in the hall. I almost call out but stop myself. The undead woman doesn’t notice my presence, going straight for the apartment a few doors down from me, and thumps her head against the door like a bird flying into a closed window. Certainly not the brightest of the bunch. She continues to try to walk through the closed door, which would be almost comedic if it wasn’t such a melancholic and dangerous situation. That woman was alive at one point; now, she has been degraded to a walking corpse. All that noise is going to attract any more that might be in here, though...
I walk towards her, carefully side-stepping the clutter on the floor, and sneak up behind her. When the half-dead woman with dull, cloudy eyes notices me it's too late. As she starts to turn around, I silently plunge my dagger up the nape of her neck and out as her body falls to the floor with a muffled thud. I frown at the sad sight and drag her out of the way.
The fact that (other than the one I just killed) there are no undead nags in the back of my mind, but what intrigues me more is the question of who or what is in that apartment. It might be stupid—extremely stupid—but it seemed like there was something in that apartment that she was trying to get to, which could be either a good or a bad sign. Best case scenario: it's empty and the dead woman was acting off of what is left of her muscle memory. Worst case scenario: undead dwell inside, eagerly waiting to tear me apart.
I press my ear to the door and listen carefully for any noise. Surprisingly, it's eerily quiet. No ragged breathing or shuffling sounds. No groaning or moaning.
Nothing.
Now that I think about it, I haven't heard anything other than myself. I'm still strongly against the idea of just waltzing into a random room, but I'm about to punch a wall if I can't find somewhere to sleep for the night. Right then, an idea pops into my head. I test the doorknob and, sure enough, it's locked. I wriggle the door knob rather loudly, waiting for something to happen. But nothing comes.
Deciding that it seems okay, I pick the lock and nudge the door to the dark room open, closing and locking it behind me. After my eyes adjust to the lighting (or the lack thereof) I scan the room cautiously. The apartment is in a state of disarray, yet spotless compared to the bloody and chaotic mess outside; an armchair in the corner overturned, stuffing spilling out of a tear in the upholstery, water dripping from a leak in the ceiling somewhere, broken and dismantled furniture spread across the room. It feels empty, yet also lived in. I swear I hear something attempting to get in, then I realize it’s just a mouse. I let out a shaky breath and try to shrug it off, narrowing it down to paranoia and exhaustion. I’m too tired to defend myself at this point. The door is locked, and there isn’t anything in here—I’m somewhat safe, for now. If I can make it through tonight, I can make a plan in the morning and figure a way out of this stupid goddamn city.
Right as I get myself calmed down, though, the atmosphere shifts. Suddenly, the air feels denser. Heavier.
Something is wrong.
The hairs on the back of my neck prick up, sending a chill through me. Before I can turn around, I hear the sound of a gun cock behind me.
“Don’t give me a reason to shoot you.”
