George Chapter of the Day
Chapter 13
Trigger Warnings: adult situations, swearing, drinking, sexual situations, slow burn romance,
**18+ only** Please.
Chapter 13
It was 10am California time when Annie Magnum heard the phone ring. Although she was deeply invested in the letter she just received from her best friend, Joie, Annie jumped up to answer it.
They had been corresponding by letter, airmail with special paper to write on...blue and thin as tissue paper, but with her emotions in turmoil, Joie needed desperately to talk to her. No one knew Joie better than Annie.
"Oh my God...Joie!" Annie exclaimed. "you have no idea how happy I am to hear from you. It's been ages."
"I know. I just needed to hear your voice," Joie explained.
"I know what you mean and have I got a story for you! But I'm quite impressed by your travel schedule. Letters from all over the world....postcards from Paris and Germany. Girl, you've been everywhere. I've managed to get to work and the Santa Monica Promenade over the last couple of months. I've done nothing compared to you."
"Annie, I want to come home so badly. It's just been a nightmare." Joie proceeded to tell Annie about Brian and the incident where she picked him up from a bar. "He's been so rude. George told me that he's just protective of the boys, but it's more than that. He just hates me."
"Whoa, sweetie pie!" Annie announced. "What the fuck is all this about? Your letters are so perky...if it's been hell, you should have told me."
"I know. I know. It was just so hard to throw in the towel and give up. That's not my style. I actually haven't been in the office. I quit. That's what I called to tell you. For right now, I'm living in George's coach house on his property."
There was dead silence until Annie squeaked out, "What the fuck???"
"I know how it sounds, but the coach house is completely separate from his house. He can come and go and I'd never know it."
"Joie, does your dad know?"
"Yes. I talked to him the other day. I wanted to give you the address so you can write me here. George actually brought all my stuff from Freda's the other day after the Brian incident, as it will be known by from now on."
"Ok....almost living together. What gives? What, exactly, do you need to tell me? You and George? Come on, give it to me straight, you wonton hussy. Do not tell me that George Harrison popped your cherry??"
They both burst out in laughter.
"No, you dirty-minded, red-haired tart."
"All true. I'll admit it," Annie giggled. "Now give it to me straight, Batgirl, what the fuck is happening?"
Joie took a breath. "I don't know, Annie. George...he's been so good to me. He really looks after me, you know? I mean I know I was hired as an assistant to all of them, but..."
"But what?" Annie prodded.
"I don't know. Being here with George has been wonderful. He's just been wonderful." Joie admitted.
"What about Paul...John...Ringo?"
"It's just been different with George. I don't know how to explain it. Cyn, John's wife, says he's smitten."
"Well, use Charlie as a reference...."Annie offered. "Do you think he likes you?"
"Charlie was a nightmare. All he wanted to do was have sex. He couldn't have cared less if we had a conversation. George actually listens to me. We talked all night the night he left for this last tour. And he'll be gone for 3 weeks."
"And it doesn't hurt that he's hot as fuck, right?"
"Well...yeah."
"Could this just be your body wanting you to have sex?"
"You mean I'm sexually starving?" Joie asked, then burst into laughter. "What about you? We were rowing in the same boat, if I remember correctly. You have something to tell me, missy?"
There was silence for a moment, then Annie spoke softly. "I met someone..."
"Yay!" Joie cheered. "Do I know him? Tell me everything immediately..."
"I'll spill in a minute. I'm not done with you yet," Annie told her. "Now what are you going to be doing while he's gone? Going into the office?"
"I don't know. The Brian Incident has put the fear in me, you know? But the office is crazy. The mail is unbelievable. Thousands by the day. Thousands. So I help Freda and answer the phone and just sort the tons of mail. We have 2 other girls now to help and Freda has been talking to Brian about opening an office in New York to handle the mail from the states alone. We'd handle just the European/Asian mail and the NY office would handle the American mail."
"Sounds like a whole lotta work, if you ask me. Now I want to ask you one question," Annie said to her. "Just one question."
"What's that?"
"How do you feel? How do you feel about George?"
Joie was silent a long time. "I miss him. I miss him a lot."
"Joie Armagh...," Annie brightened. "you're in love. You are actually in love with George Harrison."
"Am not," she answered in a blustery voice.
"You are too."
"I can't be."
"Why not?"
"I'm American. He's British," Joie stated as if that was a reason.
"What...is this the 1800's? We're allies now, you know."
Joie laughed. "Well, shit. It's just he's so... FAMOUS. I'm a California girl. Hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill after a day of beach volleyball."
"Joie, you are crazy. People fall in love all the time...for all the right reasons and sometimes for the wrong reasons. What do you say, girlfriend?"
"Well, he's not in love with me."
"Sounds to me like he's doing an awful lot to show you how he feels."
Joie thought she would change the subject. "So tell me about you. What have you been doing? Tell me about your mystery man."
"You're avoiding my questions...."
"I know."
.........
Joie thought a long time about their conversation. No one knew her better than Annie. They had been friends since first grade. Was she falling in love with George? What would she do if she was? Well, perhaps a delightful heavy petting session...followed by...uh...what? Sex would be lovely but Joie knew she had literally no experience and George was more than likely a 5-Star General when it came to bedding a bird. Joie wouldn't be able to handle the humiliation of not knowing shit..
Well, it wouldn't matter anyway, because it takes 2.
.........
"Well?" John tapped George's feet as they hung off the bed.
"Well what?" He looked up from the letter he was writing.
"C'mon, you horse's arse. Joie?? Have you told her how you feel?"
"Working on it," George gave him a sly smile.
" She, Cyn and Mo are getting to be inseparable."
"I'm glad. Really."
"So what's your stupid as shit idea?" Paul chimed in. "Like what's the plan?"
"No plan. Flying by the seat of my pants, actually," George explained. "I'm letting Joie have the reins. She's fairly shy. So I'm going to be patient."
"And while you're being patient, some doctor or lawyer or banker will sweep her away."
George shook his head. "Not Joie."
"You're daft," John and Paul echoed and left George to his letter.
Rolling over on his back, the pen tapping his chin, George thought about the girl with the lovely auburn hair. Touching her, kissing her was all he could think about. Her eyes were incredible...dark with golden flecks in her irises. She probably has no clue what he wanted to do with her.
..........
As the days went by, Joie missed George more and more. One night she actually slept in his bed, the scent of his aftershave covering his pillowcase. She pulled the pillow to her body and began moving her fingers over her flushed body. She moved slowly, touching herself and envisioned George being there with her. It was all pretty simple to please yourself...but how the fuck do you please a guy?
Hand jobs, blow jobs, penetration and orgasm. She hoped there was more than just the mechanics. Maybe it comes naturally...she hoped so anyway.
.........
The house was big and empty. She missed living with Freda. The kittens kept her company, and by now she had named them. Kit and Mouse. It seemed to fit.
But more and more, she missed home. She missed California, her dad and Jordan. She missed sunshine and hamburgers. She missed the beach. She missed Annie. She missed baseball and ice hockey. She even missed school. She had decided that when her visa was up in another 2 months, she would go home. Joie would be appreciative of everything, but she decided that California is where she belonged.
..........
He was calling from somewhere in Sweden when he and Joie began discussing her going back home. George couldn't imagine losing her now. He wished she would stay on the basis of her feelings for him, but what those were, he couldn't tell. Was she just being a good assistant or was she attracted to him? He wasn't sure what else he could do to show her he wanted all of her and, as time went by, needed her too.
"I'm going to have to face Brian at some point and I want to be able to make him happy. I'll turn in my resignation," Joie told George. "I shouldn't even be telling you this. You are really the boss, after all!"
"I gave up being my own boss when I became a Beatle," he told her, fatigue evident in his voice. "I gave up a lot when I became a Beatle."
"But George, like John said, how long could it last?" Joie said. "Enjoy it for now and figure in 5 years you will more than likely have your life back."
"None of us will be doing this in 5 years," George answered. "It's making us old already. My nervous system is shot."
"I heard about the next movie...." Joie said softly. "That will give you a break."
"But who knows when that will happen?" George said. "I figure they want it started fairly quickly....strike while we're hot, so to speak."
"We just have to get through this now," Joie said. "And we will."
"Yes, we will," George answered. "So you won't run away before I get back?"
"No, of course not," Joie laughed. "Kit and Mouse need me."
.........
Later that afternoon, a tearful Cynthia called. "I'm coming over with a bottle of wine. Julian is with my mom and I need some girl talk. John is 500 miles away and we had to get into a fight on the phone. I'm so upset...."
"C'mon over," Joie said. "I'm here."
Cyn showed up with 2 bottles of wine and 2 red, puffy eyes. She had been crying for a long time.
"He doesn't mean it half the time," Cyn said. "But he can be very cruel. Then I talked to George and he calmed me down. How things have changed since the days George followed me and John around. We've watched him grow up since he was 15."
"I know. He told me he used to tag along not understanding you and John probably wanted to be alone."
Cyn finally laughed. "I love him with my whole heart. He understands things very deeply now."
Joie exhaled a breath and nodded.
"So what are your feelings?" Cyn blurted out. "I hope you are not leading him on. He's too important to me to let him get hurt."
Joie blinked several times and shifted from her position on the floor. "Cyn, what are you talking about? I'm staying in the coach house. Nothing has happened."
"Really? It seems to me that you aren't seeing things as they really are," Cynthia said pointedly. "George is clearly crazy about you. How can you not see that?"
"What? What do you mean?"
Cyn tapped her forehead. "Don't tell me the British are more open with their feelings than the American's are...."
"Cyn, what are you saying?" Joie asked, a funny urgency building inside her.
"I'm saying everyone and their brother can see George is crazy about you. The only one who doesn't see it is you." She answered taking another sip of wine. "I mean from what I see anyway."
"George has been very good to me. I don't think he's 'crazy' about me," Joie replied with a shrug. "He's been a perfect gentleman."
"So you are saying that if he was trying to grab a feel that would prove he's interested in you?"
Joie blinked at Cyn. Tears began to well in her eyes. "No...of course not. Oh my God....."
Cyn pulled up to her knees. "Oh, don't cry. Or I'll start crying and we will never stop."
Joie's emotions were all jammed up. She was crying and laughing at the same time.
"I don't get it, Cyn...."
"He's in love with you. Is that so hard to understand?"
"Yeah. It is. I guess I'm just used to fighting off boys who just want to get a hand on you....or want your hand on them."
"Americans...."Cyn joked. "I think the key word is 'boys'. George isn't a boy. He's been through a lot and learned from it. He's a man....a man who is love with you."
"I don't really think that's true. I mean how do you know?"
"Would it matter if I told you? I mean, how do you feel?"
Joie thought for a long time and took a drink from her wine glass. "I miss him, Cyn. I miss him. I know that for sure. Nothing would make me happier than seeing him walk through that front door."
Cyn smiled brightly. "That sounds just a little like love to me."
Joie leaned forward. "I don't know what love is. I've never been in love."
"I think you know what it is. You've just never experienced it."
"When did you know that you loved John?"
Cyn looked at Joie. "When I missed him."
..........
They sat on the floor and ate the meal Joie cooked for them. Cyn opened the other bottle of wine as they cleaned up the kitchen and talked about Julian and families and clothes....and George.
"I'm not as fashionable as some of these English birds," Joie told her. "California is pretty laid back when it comes to fashion. It's not like New York or London."
"I think George likes the fresh, clean look..." Cyn teased her.
Joie laughed. "He got that full in the face the night he brought me back from London after the incident with Brian. I took a shower and had no make up or anything. I must have looked like something the dog dragged in."
"I think George was very worried about you after that. None of us could believe Brian did that to you."
"Oh, it's ok now. George came to the rescue."
"My point exactly."
Joie looked at Cyn. "I think I'm beginning to understand...."
All of a sudden, the front door swung open and George stood there with Mal. "9 am Mal. Bright and early."
"George...." Joie exclaimed, running toward the door. "What are you doing here?"
He only smiled at her. He dropped a small bag on the floor and looked at Cyn. "You girls have a nice time?"
"Very nice," Cyn said collecting her things to leave. "My cue to go."
Joie looked from George to Cyn and back again. She didn't know what to think.
"Thanks, Cyn," George said to her, kissing her cheek as she exited.
"No problem," Cyn answered. "And I'll talk to you soon Joie..."
"Bye Cyn" Joie called after her.
George made sure Cyn got into her car safely and returned to Joie. They stood 10 feet apart, Joie just looking at him.
"But...but...you're on tour...." Joie said, confused. "How....why....? Did something go wrong?
"Yeah, something went beautifully wrong." he answered, watching her carefully. "I don't want you to go back to the states, Joie. I'd really love for you to stay."
Neither of them moved. Tears began to well in Joie's eyes. She blinked quickly. All of a sudden she ran to him and jumped into his open arms. Joie buried her face into his collar and held onto him. He smelled amazing. His arms held her tightly and his body seemed to curl into her somehow.
Neither of them could let go.
"Joie...." He said softly into her neck.
"George..." she responded. "What are you doing here?"
He shifted so he was able to frame her face in his hands. He kissed her on the lips very gently. Then held her again.
"Pack a bag," he whispered.
She leaned back to look at him. "Where are we going?"
"You're going. Not me. I've got to catch a plane back to Sweden before noon tomorrow."
Joie shook her head not understanding. "So what do I pack?"
"Enough clothes to last a week or so."
"Where am I going?"
"Just be ready in 15 minutes."
Joie reached up and kissed him back. "Ok."
And she raced off to the coach house to pack a bag.
.........
She felt warm in the car for the 30 minute drive to George's parents' house. He held her hand in his lap, unwilling to let her go now that he had her.
"But George, I just can't park myself at your parents' house until you come back. It's such an intrusion..."
George shook his head. "I always thought American's busted into their neighbors houses all the time. Loose. Free. You are more worried about appearances than I thought."
"It's just that I don't know your parents....and it seems like a lot to ask. 'Oh, can a stranger come and stay for a couple of weeks'?"
"You are not a stranger. Besides, I thought you said you trusted me."
"I do...."
"Ok then," George told her. "Sit back and relax. We'll be there soon."
"But what about the cats?" she asked suddenly. "We can't leave them."
"Cyn's going to stop by."
"You planned this all out, didn't you?" she said, tilting her head at him.

Henry Hargreaves and What Daisy Valence Orders Backstage
As I researched various photographers and their subjects - average people, models, landscapes, natural phenomena, active moments in history - I felt as though none of them truly felt like anything that Iâd be able to replicate. It all seemed like a mixed bag of potential failures. However, I eventually managed to find an approachable set of photos.
Henry Hargreaves, a New Zealand-born photographer, informally began his photography career when he was in high school at Christâs College in Christchurch, New Zealand (yes, those are the real names). After moving to the United States, he began working as a bartender at Schillerâs in Lower East Manhattan, New York City, where heâd stay for three years. During his time as a model, he developed a more in-depth interest in photography, asking the photographers about how the different cameras, filters, and lighting would affect the photos taken; âI then brought a simple set up and began experimenting by myself.â (Astrum People, Henry Hargreaves: Creative Approach to Art). At the beginning, heâd photograph models, though his first paid job was in photographing still life photos which opened up his interest in products and set ups, as opposed to live models. Over the course of his career, he photographed for Ralph Lauren, New York Magazine, and National Geographic. Hargreaves has also consistently used food as a subject in his photos, as evidenced by his work on the Jackâs Wife Freda cookbook.
However, all of that was moved to the side for me when I saw his work with Vice. Though limited, I saw the three articles published eight, nine, and 10 years ago, respectively, and how they dealt with food as a medium for the human condition. The most recent article, âPhotos of Meals Preppers Plan to Eat at The End of the Worldâ, discusses his time photographing the surprisingly reasonable meals preppers had planned, from chicken for the insulin-critical, MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) for the First Responder Veterans, and even protein-rich bugs for the veteran preppers. In the article before, âHenry Hargreaves Photographs Death Rowâs Final Mealsâ (which he states is a statement piece against the American Death Penalty), he discusses how most foods he captured were fried comfort foods, and how certain individuals made a lasting impression with their orders - like the person who asked to watch the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or the other who ordered a single olive - or with their words, such as the inmate who didnât eat his pecan pie as he was âsaving it for laterâ.
Overall, I felt that the one that rang out to me was his first article with Vice titled âHenry Hargreaves's Photos of What Famous Musicians Eat Backstageâ. There, he explains and demonstrates the ridiculous riders - clause in their contracts as performers - that the celebrities have asked for, such as Al Green and his 24 long-stem (dethorned) roses, or Van Halenâs herring in sour cream accompanied by a large tube of KY Jelly and M&Mâs with the brown ones removed.
The one that called out to me, however, was Axl Roseâs rider, which was a pack of fresh white Wonder bread and a bottle of Dom Perignon. The classiness of the champagne mixed with the classic staple of Americana created an image of remembering your roots and reveling in the world you now find yourself in, which is definitely the case for the rocker. Due to his complex childhood, he soon found solace in music, which led to him engrossing himself with his band Axl and donning his now legal name, W. Axl Rose.
Now, given that I am not an avid drinker, nor do I have an incredible cash flow or transportation access at the moment, my options for both a bottle of alcohol or white bread were scarce. However, I remembered I had a bottle of Blue VIn Riesling, a wine whose silhouette bore a striking resemblance to the previously mentioned champagne, and that my mother was gifted an overstock of white bread from the Bridgeville Library. I set up the image and matched the lighting as best as I could, and though I admit it is not an exact recreation, Iâd say itâs fairly close.
As for the title of this statement, Iâd thought since I was essentially parodying the original by using similar - but not identical - subjects for the composition, I decided to create a similar - but not identical - rocker who would partake in the knock-off.
Daisy Valence, named after her mother, Daisy Chamberlain, was the love child of a complex relationship. Her father, Gordon Thompson, was a man 20 years her motherâs senior, and had begun shortly after Ms. Chamberlainâs graduation. However, it was short-lived, as she became pregnant, and Thompson wanted nothing to do with her. As a single mother, sheâd leave her daughter in the care of her local churchâs daycare, where she gained a passion for gospel music. This led her to become a powerhouse neo-funk/groove singer of the modern day. Her choice of Cha-Ching enriched white bread and Blue Vin Riesling as riders come from what she remembers were her motherâs go-to after a long day of working at the auto repair shop as a receptionist. As for her stage name, the last name âValenceâ comes from when Daisy visited her motherâs job and saw the word in a write-up for a job her motherâs coworker had done.

Weekend Top Ten #581
Top Ten Comedy Songs
Ah, comedy. Funny, isnât it? Iâve talked a little about comedy songs recently when I was doing my list specifically about The Lonely Island; and also in the past, ranking the songs of Weird Al (and even further back, the songs of Monty Python). One of the interesting things I find with comedy songs is that they stick in my mind more than usual; I think because youâre parsing the jokes, the lines resonate more. You remember the lyrics because the lyrics are funny and you need to remember the construction of the lines in order to remember the joke. Itâs one of the reasons why I know all the words to The Saga Begins but not to American Pie; itâs just funnier to sing about going back to Naboo because Queen Amidala wanted to, even if frankly youâd have liked to stay. So itâs more memorable.
For me, anyway.
So thereâs nothing much else to this list. Itâs just songs Iâve heard that are funny. No, actually, there is more to it; itâs not just âsongs that are funnyâ, itâs songs that are specifically supposed to be funny. Actual, genuine, comedy songs, songs specifically designed to get you laughing. This lead to a lot of internal deliberation about Tenacious D in particular; are their songs comedy songs? Or are they genre parodies, songs that happen to be amusing, but are songs first and foremost? Songs that are funny rather than comedy delivered through song. Itâs a hazy line, but I can still see it. It makes sense to me.
Mostly what you have here are songs from, Iâd say, comedy acts. Monty Python, Weird Al, Lonely Island â all present and correct. Victoria Wood, Billy Connolly, and Tim Minchin. What you donât really have â unfortunately â are any musical numbers. I came very, very close to having a Teen Titans Go! song on the list, but sadly it just slipped off the bottom. Maybe thatâs one for the future. Another debate I had with myself was over âcomedy songâ versus ânovelty songâ; yâknow, larky songs that could encompass everything from The Chicken Song (that feels comedy) to Right Said Fred (arguable, itâs at least amusing) to Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (nope). I mean, where do you draw the line? I almost included Me and My Monkey by Robbie Williams, a genuinely funny and demented song about a coke-addled monkey shooting up hotel rooms in Vegas. I mean, the likes of Babe Iâm on Fire or The Cure of Milhaven by Nick Cave are also darkly comic; and I think Donât Sit Down Coz Iâve Moved Your Chair by Arctic Monkeys is hilarious. But is it a comedy song?
I dunno. But I decided these ten are. So enjoy.
Oh, and I only picked one song per artist; otherwise I worried thereâd only be three or four artists represented. And I guess, er, Mature Content Warning? What is it with comedians wanting to eff and jeff in their songs, I dunno.
The Ballad of Barry and Freda (Letâs Do It) (Victoria Wood, 1986): thereâs a pleasingly British comic sensibility which renders quite filthy content in a nudge-nudge wink-wink, innuendo-laden fashion thatâs deemed suitable for younger audiences. From saucy postcards to pantomime to âAllo âAllo, we do like our primetime fruitiness. And who did it better (oo-er) than Wood? This masterpiece of comedy is so quintessentially British â from its references to hostess trolleys and, yes, Womanâs Weekly â but also fits the comic archetype of horny housewives and tired old husbands, the working-class world of Woodâs comedy. Itâs comfy and itâs sweet and itâs lovely and itâs hilarious and itâs filthy. But itâs also a work of complex musicality and is a stunning performance by Wood on the piano.
Every Sperm is Sacred (Monty Python, 1983): Monty Python produced a raft of hilarious songs in their time, but thereâs something about the production of this that elevates it above the likes of Eric the Half a Bee. The jokes about Catholicism I find very funny, and itâs always great to see Palin doing his Yorkshire accent. But once you turn it into a fully-fledged musical number, with chorus lines of high-kicking midwives and dancing urchin children and parades of undertakers and a singing corpse, it becomes something else. Even just aurally itâs such a high-quality production, and it all adds to the comedy.
White & Nerdy (âWeird Alâ Yankovic, 2006): god, itâs hard to choose an Al song. Iâve already ranked them (and truth be told I didnât go back to look to see if Iâd put this as number one), but any of that Top Ten cold be here. What I love about this, though, is its lyricism, and the depth of its references; from millennial-era computing jargon through to references to Star Trek and Segways. Itâs a snapshot of its time but itâs also just a wonderfully-constructed love letter to a particular flavour of geekery. And, of course, made funnier because itâs presented as quite a tough rap song.
Inner City Pressure (Flight of the Conchords, 2007): another band where I could have picked at least half a dozen songs. This one is great, though, because itâs probably the best Pet Shop Boys parody Iâve ever heard, and very distinct from the Conchordsâ usual repertoire. Taking the serious, deadpan delivery of PSB, superficially singing about urban decay, but then writing lyrics about second-hand underpants is just sublime. Also wins a million points for getting a rhyme out of âconcert flautistâ.
D.I.V.O.R.C.E. (Billy Connolly, 1975): I sometimes think itâs a bit of a shame that Connolly segued away from music as his comedy career accelerated; especially given gems such as this. A fairly direct parody of the original song by Tammy Wynette, itâs the absurdity of the lyrics that real elevate this; the story of an angry dog biting the V-E-T, and the words Connolly chooses to spell (B-U-M). Also features the genius line, âshe called me an F-ing Câ â which, hilariously, is often bleeped on some recordings.
Horse Outside (The Rubberbandits, 2010): thereâs something nasty and angry about most Rubberbandits songs; maybe itâs the weird carrier bag facemasks. But outside of songs about gay sex, fistfights, and Danny Dyer, we have this utterly demented love letter to a horse, and why itâs better than a car. Delightfully Irish in so many ways, itâs sort of quite sweet but also utterly barmy and consistently potty-mouthed. Bit mean about Billie Piper, though.
Spring Break Anthem (The Lonely Island, 2013): speaking about gay sex, we have my favourite Lonely Island song, mixing up hedonistic alpha male behaviour with tender same-sex romance. And, to be honest, thatâs all there is to it; itâs skewering the offensive, misogynistic posturing of the songâs subjects by way of comparison. And itâs really, really funny. I wrote about it fairly recently so if you want more, go back two weeks.
Prejudice (Tim Minchin, 2009): Minchin is a genius lyricist and so many of his songs are both hilarious and also just really, really good (Not Perfect and White Wine in the Sun are almost entirely straight). I do sometimes get a bit of that try-hard atheism that makes Gervais so unappealing, but basically heâs great, and this song is amazing. Subverting expectations to tremendous effect is one thing, but the number of ways he finds of discussing the subject matter in increasingly funny ways is, well, very clever.
Happy Birthday in Minor Key (Bill Bailey, 2015): a bit like a more shambolic, shamanistic version of Minchin, Baileyâs musical genius often finds comedic expression as he deconstructs genres and styles. Here, playing Happy Birthday in a minor key creates a dirge that he then supplies with brilliantly dour, goth-tinged lyrics. Thereâs some wonderful wordplay and it all builds to a final couple of lines that really do put the icing on the cake.
George Washington (Brad Neely, 2010): this one nearly didnât make the list, great as it is, but in the end the fact that I still â over a decade later â find myself quietly singing the refrain âWashington, Washington, twenty stories high made of radiationâ suggests it has supreme earworm qualities. Long before Hamilton, here was a musical about one of the Founding Fathers that felt free to mix up modern lyricism with revered history. After all, itâs a known fact that Washington really did make love like an eagle falling out of the sky.
This was hard. Iâm absolutely certain Iâve forgotten something huge and Iâll remember it two days after this is published. Next week will probably be better, as Iâm doing my ying-yang thing and returning to the MCUâŚ

7. What are 3 foods they canât live without?
8. What will always make them smile? What will always make them cry?
For Freda?
Thank you so much for asking, friend! I love talking about my OCs ^^
Ask me something about my 5 OCs from this post!
1: Her closest friend is probably le Comte - He was the one who brought her to the mansion and, he's the father figure: She is always seeking his approval. I also just think that the two of them are kindred spirits: They both enjoy tea, history and fancy clothes (and china dolls since I hc that Comte has a little collection of them). They met at the theatre in Freda's original time - They happened to be sat next to each other and struck up a conversation during the interval - and at the end of the show, she agreed to go back with him after popping home to grab a few of her belongings like her glasses and her diary. The pair of them like to read together and share new teas that they find while they talk about history. And Comte insists on taking Freda dress shopping and spoiling her rotten with new clothes and trinkets.
Romantically speaking, it is Theo and Arthur, they are her boyfriends after all. Freda started a relationship with Arthur after a few months at the mansion and then eventually - after some drunk confessions and making out - Theo joined their relationship, too. Freda is quite happy having the pair of them share her, even though the boys do squabble over who's turn it is for date night sometimes. But don't be mistaken; the three of them would give each other the world if they could. Arthur enjoys taking Freda on exciting, high energy dates that he knows that she'll love, ice skating being their favourite together (Freda has been teaching both of her boyfriends to skate with varying levels of success). Whereas Theo prefers slower paced date with Freda: Museums, art galleries, trips to see the ballet - all things that he is sure that his snoepje will enjoy from observing her carefully and noting her interests over time. Sometimes, Freda will get a little jealous when Theo and Arthur are spending a romantic night together - something which the boys think is obvious when they see her the next morning - and thus, they'll invite her to join them more often. After this, they begin trying new things out as a three, rather than in their seperate little couplings, and it works out wonderfully for them. The three of them are so so in love.
7: Freda does have some issues with food (most things with weird textures) but these are the three foods she could never give up even if she tried:
Potatoes - Yes, it is a simple food but, you can do so many things with them. Being a decently skilled cook, Freda makes all sorts of tasty potato dishes: Dauphinoise potatoes, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie - she just loves potatoes.
Princess cake (PrinsesstĂĽrta) - She doesn't eat it often but, the thought of living in a world without princess cake leaves Freda distraught. She has quite the sweet tooth and enjoys PrinsesstĂĽrta on special occasions like her birthday .
Christmas dinner - Okay it might not be one specific food but, Christmas dinner is Freda's favourite meal of the entire year. It is certainly the meal that she looks forward to the most: Roasted parsnips, her beloved potatoes, cranberry sauce, turkey - She enjoys it so much. She probably has such a soft spot for it because Christmas dinner is always shared with loved ones, lots of smiles and warm feelings.
8: Freda will always smile when she dances, sings, skates and creates things. It might sound a little silly but, she cannot help the grin on her face when she dances around the mansion - so much so that le Comte offers to pull some strings for her to join the Paris Opera Ballet. It's the same when she sits down at the piano to tinker with the notes, playing until she creates something new and beautiful.
Being scolded - or rather, being given non-constructive criticism - will always make Freda cry. She strives to be perfect and is 100% a people pleaser so, when someone criticises her without rhyme or reason, and also does not advise her on how to improve or fix her mistakes, leaves her feeling so helpless and vulnerable and ultimately just makes her break down in tears. Theo learnt this the hard way and earned a harsh talking-to from le Comte.

Salty and Sweet ch. 5
A/N: Heres the moment weâve all been waiting for! xo B
Warnings: mild swearing
Jane pulled into her driveway, closely followed by Sweet Pea on his motorcycle. As she got out of her car, she noticed Sweet Pea observing her home. True, it was small and quaint for the Northside, but thatâs all she and her mother could ever need and afford.
âIâll be right back out, Iâm going to change.â Jane called to Sweet Pea, and he gave her a nod.
âMake it snappy, shortcake.â
Jane rolled her eyes and ran up the stone steps to her house, noticing her mom was gone from work. She used this moment to run upstairs to her room and pull on a black long sleeved bodysuit with a low-ish neckline and a pair of high waisted ripped jeans. She completed her look with a pair of silver hooped earrings. As a last minute decision, Jane decided on some deep red lipstick. After spritzing herself with her vanilla scented perfume, Jane made her way back outside to Sweet Pea.
âSorry to keep you waiting.â she said, and his eyes flicked up to meet hers, traveling from her lips to her chest, then quickly back to meet her gaze.
âDont you look spiffy,â Sweet Pea commented, and Jane found herself blushing once again. He handed her his spare helmet and she tugged it on over her curls. âYou better hold on, Princess.â he scooted up to give her space to climb on behind him, and she swung a leg over and found herself holding the seat. âHold onto me, you goon.â Sweet Pea laughed.
Jane let out a nervous chuckle before gripping either side of Sweet Peaâs denim vest.
The pair pulled out of her driveway and sped down the road, across the tracks and into the Southside. Jane loved the feeling of the wind on her face as Sweet Pea cruised along. It was a rush of adrenaline, really. Sheâd never been on the back of a boyâs bike before.
Eventually, they stopped near a driveway of a house that was already crowded with some bikes and beater cars, there were people out on the lawn, red solo cups and cans in hands. Sweet Pea shut off the engine and pulled his helmet off, which encouraged Jane to do the same, but not before She caught a whiff of a strong scented shampoo. Damn he smelled good.
âHere we are,â Sweet Pea swing himself off the bike and held the handle bars while Jane hobbled off, nearly losing her balance when her food got stuck on the seat, but the tall Serpent was quick to catch her. âDid I leave you weak in the knees, little girl?â he said with a grin, and she gave him a sour look before straightening herself and letting go of his arm. Sweet Pea kicked out the kick-stand and put both of the helmets back on his bike. The house was thrumming with the beat of a song that came from inside.
âHope youâre ready for a Southside party. Donât go getting too drunk, itâs my ass thatâs watching out for your ass.â Sweet Pea nudged her with his elbow as they made their way past the groups outside, and Jane watched as they all greeted Sweet Pea. She kept herself mostly behind him, trying not to attract much attention. The pair had barely made their way inside before Sweet Pea was engulfed in a hug.
âPea! Man! There you are, youâre my best friend. Did you know that?â A stocker boy said as he swung his arms around Sweet Pea. Jane recognized him to be boy he was always with, the classier one from the other night at Popâs. âWhoâs this bombshell?â he indicated Jane as he let go of the taller boy.
âFangs, cool it. Sheâs my plus one tonight. Meet Jane.â Sweet Pea introduced her, and Jane found herself really enjoying the way her name sounded on his lips.
âJane, Iâm Fangs. Here on the Southside, we hug when weâre drunk.â Fangs then proceeded to give Jane a bear hug. âHere, have a beer new friend Jane!â he pulled a can from the inside of his leather jacket. Jane graciously accepted it, surprised to find it was cold.
âThanks, new friend Fangs.â Jane cracked the cam and took a sip, earning a raised brow from Sweet Pea. How could he tell she wasnât a beer drinker?
âThere you guys are! We were just about to leave, Fangs hates being at parties without his Sweetie Pie.â a rather short pink haired girl had joined them. âIâm Toni.â she said when she caught Janeâs gaze on her, and extended a hand. Jane shook it, returning the smile.
âNice to meet you, I love your hair!â Jane exclaimed, then indicated to the purple in her own. That earned a grin from Toni.
âPurple, love it. You fit right in, itâs about time too. Being the only girl in a group of guys gets boring sometime.â Toni laughed and threw an arm around Jane.
Jane had never really be involved with a group of friends before. Just the odd friends and Freda. Shit, she forgot about Freda. Oh well, sheâll love this story on Monday morning. She took a moment to observe the three who were deep in conversation about the goings on of Talonâs party before Jane and Sweet Pea arrived.
After a couple moments, Sweet Pea took her by the sleeve when Toni and Fangs challenged each other to a game of beer pong. He led her into the kitchen where there was numerous bottles of alcohol and different mixes, and a whole cooler full of beer. âLetâs get you something better than beer.â
âAre you joking? I love beer.â Jane joked, taking a final sip, but failed in keeping a straight face and reacted to the bitterness.
Sweet Pea chuckled and pulled the can from her grasp and set it down for a hammered individual to finish. âHow about some rum and coke? Vodka cran? Straight whiskey?â he grinned, pulling on the charade as bar tender.
âVodka cran, kind sir.â Sweet Pea obliged and filled the red solo cup a quarter of the way with vodka, then the rest with cranberry juice. Jane accepted the cup and stuck her pinky in instinctively, like she would at home, mixing the drink before popping her pinky into her mouth to suck the remains off.
âAre you trying to attract me right now?â Sweet Pea asked, leaning against the counter. âBecause if so, itâs working.â
Jane grinned up at him. âNot really, I needed to mix.â she shrugged, taking a gulp from her cup. âYou do a good vodka to cran ratio.â
Sweet Pea smiled, and suddenly the house was quiet and it was just Sweet Pea and Jane in the house, the two of them caught eye to eye, and Sweet Pea raised an arm to tuck a curl behind Janeâs ear. Butterflies flew around her stomach and she found herself taking another drink from her cup.
âYouâre cute when youâre nervous.â He told her, and she was all of a sudden forced to put her drink on the counter before Sweet Pea cupped her cheek in his hand, pressing his lips to hers. Jane felt herself kiss back, half startled but half craving more of him.
âExcuse me?â came a shrill voice from the doorway of the kitchen. Jane and Sweet Pea quickly pulled apart to find Savannah standing in the door way, looking furious. âPea, I told you about this party and you take a Northsider and kiss her? At the party? Where I told you to come?â
âFuck off, Savannah. Go fuck Talon or some other sorry idiot.â Sweet Pea shout back over the sound of the music, and Jane pulled back as he pushed back from the counter and towards Savannah. âYou canât keep inserting yourself into my life whenever you damn well please.â
With a scoff, Savannah spun on her heel and stormed out of the kitchen.
âIâm sorry.â Sweet Pea turned back to Jane, eyes apologetic. He extended a hand to her. âLetâs go find Fangâs and Toni.â
Jane took another gulp from her drink and graciously put her hand in Sweet Peaâs, which was big and warm and comforting. She allowed him to guide her through the body-crowded living room and to where Toni and Fangs were sprawled on the couch. Sweet Pea and Jane plopped down on the edge, dangerously close to one another. Instead of inserting herself into the conversation, Jane let the vodka clear her thoughts of Savannah. Soon her head lulled onto Sweet Peaâs shoulder.
âHey, are you okay?â came his deep voice as his hand gently shook your arm.
Jane lifted her head to meet her gaze and found him swimming around in her vision. âIâm ready for home.â she told him. She should have remembered vodka made her sleepy.
Sweet Pea nodded and the two said their good byes to Toni and Fangs before he slipped her hand back into Janeâs and he guided her back out and onto his bike. He fasted her helmet on before his and gave her head a tap.
âIâm sorry I cut your party short.â Jane told him as they climbed back onto the bike.
âThatâs okay, just make sure you hold on to me tightly, Sleepy.â Sweet Pea gave her a reassuring pat on the hand when she fisted her freezing hands into his denim vest pockets.
The two cruised back into the Northside soon enough and back up Janeâs driveway. Jane noticed her mom still wasnât home from work, which would make it easier for her to go to bed quicker.
âCan I have your number?â Sweet Pea asked Jane as he helped her off his bike. âI think Iâd like to take you out again.â
âYeah, uh, here.â Jane took his phone and plugged her number in under the name âPrincessâ. She handed it back with a wink. âThank you for taking me tonight. I like your friends. And your lips.â she let the vodka add, earning a chuckle from the raven haired boy.
He quickly dipped his head and caught her lips in his once again, finishing what he started at the party. This time the kiss grew deeper as he wrapped his arms around her waist and her arms twined around his neck.
It seemed as though sparks flew from between the both of them, Jane intoxicated by the taste of him instead of the vodka cran. Then her thoughts got to her. Flashbacks of the blond haired boy who took advantage of her previously. Quickly, she pulled back, and both pairs of arms dropped to their sides. âIâll see you at school.â Jane gave him a smile, an extra kiss on the cheek and quickly ran into her house, leaving a confused but happy Sweet Pea staring after her.
