Daily reminder
Stop comparing yourself to others. For we have our own pace. Each and everyone is unique. We are our own, and we do things that we know are best. Society, undeniably, dictates our principles, stances, and decisions however, it must not stop us to exert the effort of control on expression, our right to show our own interpretation of freedom, showcasing creativity, and the talents we possess.
You must remember this.

hello, can you pls help me with my dilemma on whether to buy a new laptop or a phone. i really need a new laptop because my old one has some defects, tho it still runs fine kaso super hassle, 30 min palang low bat na and sira ibang keys and ung screen. I dont have a phone for 2 years na and my parents wants me to buy one due to communication. i think it would be helpful din bc i can also study using it. what do u think?
Better purchase a durable laptop (just make sure its software could run smoothly in the long term and hardware is durable enough to use for 6-7 years.) Personally, I bought a 2015 macbook air and still the little guy is dashing like a cheetah.
Mobile, you can live without a smartphone. My two cents on this is for you to purchase a phone that would serve a sole purpose, communication.
hope this helps in a little way

What happened? Crushie, Guam, Academics, Life in General. | formerly studyphile
Before I start the long narrative, I uploaded my first video on my trip to Guam! please check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXAXJBX4TL8&t=82s  Thanks guys xoxo
It was a mixture happiness (specifically kilig), enthusiasm, and awkwardness. I would like to share this by listing it into 5 moments!
1. I met my former crush that I’ve easily moved on to. She tapped my arm in the usual way we had communication back then. She apologised for what happened for the last 6 months that we cut off our friendship? And it was surprising that she remembers the exact date that awkward situation when and where that took place. I ended up accompanying her to the library and talked primarily about her lovelife that I wasn’t anticipating that happened last year and the past 6 months.
2. I arrived finally from Guam, I spent my mini “vacation” break for 4 days. I had so much fun, for I witnessed my first celebration of Japan club of Guam’s annual autumn festival, got to shop at Micronesia Mall particularly at Ross, roamed around the island, explored Two Lover’s Point (and day dreaming about my current crushie lol), drop by the post office to send some PH stuff to my dad, went back to the old GPO (Forever 21, back to Ross which had a crazy checkout line, etc.) and finally welcoming people Tita Lolit, Tita Lina, Tito Nandi, and Tita Myrna are the one’s who accommodated me to this wonderful trip. I can’t thank them enough.
3. I gave my current crush the latest copy Archaeology, he was surprised, and I blushed in front of him (I hope he didn’t noticed it huhu)  he looks grateful about it. Thanks to Nev for giving me that “lakas ng loob.” On the one hand, I’m looking forward to taking photos of some of the collections in the mini museum of my department and transforming it as a part of a coffee table book which my crushie wishes to accomplish. :) KINIKILIG AKO BESH!
4. My mother feels so much better without chemotherapy. She looks happy, and thankfully she maintains the diet that Dr. Farrah and her associates advised her to intake. Our mantra is NO processed food - as I posted on our reminder wall. I love you mom, I know you’ll eventually be C-Free.
5. I am looking forward to attending my department’s centennial celebration of Anthropology in the Philippines. Especially on the lecture about online anthropology. Oh my god, I need to do my research huhu. Semester is ending soon!
Thanks guys for taking the time to read this! :) I’ll organise a GIVEAWAY since the holidays and my birthday is coming!

Distressed,
a time to yearn for a caress.
disappointment -
inevitable unfair circumstance.
it kills me, and every one of us
negative emotions
everyone would take its caution
either face it head on or succumb oneself to isolation
you and I have the choice.
keep in mind we posses the chance to make it up ourselves
we all get a chance
a time to heal, change, and redeem oneself.

Mini overview on Linguistic Anthropology (Part 1)
Readings from Alesandro Duranti
Introduction
We humans have the innate ability to learn language. Language plays a role in people lives. Studying language goes beyond grammar as we use it to yield social action.
Context, manner of using language is culturally mediated.
Linguistic anthropology - is one of anthropology’s subfields that primarily focused on the theory and practice of language.
Means to study language -> utterances -> shape meanings -> language produced
key people: Dell Hymes; Marcel Mauss; Antoine Meillet; Claude Levi-Strauss; Roger Brown; Leonard Bloomfield;
Goals of Linguistic Anthropology:
1. Importance of Language through the understanding of culture and society
2. Relevance of cultural and social phenomena of understanding of languages
Synonyms: Anthropological linguistics; Sociolinguistics; diverged meanings, different roots/history related but separate research enterprises.
Anthropological Linguistics v. Linguistic anthropology
William Foley - subfield of linguistics; concerned with the place of language in its wider social and cultural context; role in forging and sustaining cultural practices and social structures.
Chomskian Revolution: encouraged “autonomous” models of grammar and discourage the study of cultural or sociological dimensions of language.
Main Concerns of Anthropological Linguistics
(1) documentation of grammatical structures of indigenous languages without writing.
(2) language as the medium (myths, historical narratives could take form)
(3) use of language as a window on culture (worldview or weltanschauung)
!!! - many anthropologist still take language for granted, they define language as a mere transparent medium for culture.
Mainstream Linguistics - fundamentally concerned with structures of languages or grammar rather that who those who use it [speakers]
Ethnoscience - studying nomenclatures and taxonomies (animals, plants, types, of disease, etc.); genetic relations among languages (comparative method); impact of culture on language (euphemism, taboos, sacred or respectful terms)
Technical Linguistics - use of linguistic data for research; “cultural studies without linguistic consideration tend to be narrowly sociological rather than broadly anthropological”
Linguistic Anthropology - 1870s, designate a distinctly anthropological approach to the study of language. [Hymes]; study of language within the context of anthropology.
concerns: (1) study of language - central part of anthropology; (2) broaded study of language beyond grammatical structures - forms in relation to the context of their use.
Franz Boas and Bronislaw Malinowki: it is impossible to understand a community without understanding the language(s) used by its members. It is more than grammatical description and historical reconstruction but the interest in speakers as more than producers of linguistic forms.

Favorite Books of All Time | Frances’ recommends :)
Here are my top 5 books that I wanted to share in case you haven’t read these awe inspiring and enlightening paper butterflies that reflects my personality (If you want to know me better!)
1. Please Look After Mom by Shin Kyung Sook
I first encountered this book at the local bookstore, I was curious because the author was Korean. Anyway, this book is generally about the struggle of siblings on finding their mother’s whereabouts. But the core of the story is more of searching for the identity of their mother. Seeking what their mother is before she became their parent. Overall this is a touching story, I cried and made me realize that my mother is more than just a mother. She is a human with flaws made for perfection.
2. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
“You is kind, you is smart, you is the most important” a quote you would recite to a child. That is what “the help” is trying to fulfill the motherly duties to a child she never had. The setting was during the 1960s in Mississippi before the Civil Rights Movement. I became interested because the storyline still persists and that the help is continuously maltreated, discriminated, and degraded in this inimical society. I love the mix of comedy, drama, and romance in this book. In sum, you should read the book and watch the movie.
3. The Girl With Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee
I admit that I am curious about North Korea’s and its persistence to become the world’s sole Hermit Kingdom. Thus I seek information about the people who lived there. And defectors serves as an eye opener to know how to thrive in an socioeconomically isolated place. This book is about her continuous fight for survival, and eventually evolve to claim knowledge, and a right to live in liberty and that she needed to change her identity depending on the circumstance of what nation she was in. The book was phenomenal because Hyeonseo Lee with the help of her co-writers had shaped the picture of a typical North Korean girl and her family struggles.
4. In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park
A supplement to those curious minds for North Korean life and culture. Every person is unique regardless if they live in the same societal background. I haven’t finish the whole book. I’ll write a review on a separate post.
5. Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
One of the first books that inspired me to get my shit done (Lol). Kidding aside, I was amazed on how the author got his idea of habits and his scientific explanation on how habits are formed, transformed, change, and discarded. His inspiration is when he observed the behaviour of the United States Military. I don’t want to give spoilers. In short, Just read it! :)

pile of feelings
throughout this gloomy silent night
wandering on your possible thoughts
worries, frustrations, that led you want to see the light
I wish that I will be the one would sought
that i may comfort you and ease your sadness
to get me out of this emotional helplessness

Sanay ako sa physical books pero gusto ko sana matutong masanay sa ebooks para libre lang... Any tips? Or should I invest on paper? Ang mahal kasi ng med books eh, I could ask my parents for money pero ayoko na din kasing mapagastos pa sila...
You can print the ebooks instead, try websites that offers ebook converters (mobi, pub) to PDF. if you’re nearby Diliman, Quezon City you can print it at the Shopping Centre (costs 1.50 php per page.)
Try these sites!

Hi! Do you know any good dotted notebooks/loose paper and where I can buy them in the Philippines? Thank you so much. :)
Hello! You can now buy Rhodia products at National Book store (ranging from 200-500 pesos), but if you wish to get high quality products and price Muji is the best choice.

hi! until now i havent yet decided kung anong course kukunin ko sa college.. kailangan na kailangan ko na magdecide, i dont know what to do :((( pls help me :(( thank you in advance
I understand your struggles. You need to evaluate the skills and talents you’re possessing. What do you want to do? What is your passion? Only then you can match it to ones closest degree program offered in your prospected university.
Or if your parents and time permits, I suggest for you to take a gap year (do volunteering, enrolling in an online university program, do the activities you’re fond of) Take an Associate’s in degree in University of the Philippines Open U. http://www.upou.edu.ph/101-upou/academics/fed/112-associate-in-arts this program will expose you to different fields and disciplines.
It might be radical to some, but getting to a university should not be the norm. I mean, some of the successful individuals/personalities we’ve known haven’t accomplished their undergrad degrees. However, this is not to discourage people. But getting to an education institution is for people who needs mere accreditation (licences).
hope this helps in a little way. We (studyblrph community) wishes you good luck to your future endeavours.
