Last-Minute Operation Secures G20 Declaration Approval
Europeans complain Brazil bulldozed the process
Brazil employed a "fait accompli operation," as one participant described it, to bypass France’s opposition and announce consensus at the G20.
At the final plenary meeting on Monday (18), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the approval of the G20 leaders' declaration and brought the gavel down.
At that moment, in the eleventh hour, France's sherpa (negotiator), Emmanuel Bonne, raised his hand. He stated that he wanted to review the terms of the declaration and submit them to French President Emmanuel Macron, who was not in the room at the time.
According to accounts from those present at the closed-door meeting, President Lula turned to Brazil’s sherpa, Mauricio Lyrio. Lyrio argued that the negotiation process had taken a year and that the requested changes had already been addressed.

Team USA has their man?
The search for the next leader of the US Men's National team is over, as Mauricio Pochettino is the next man to try and send the US men's team to the top of the soccer world. The US dismissed Gregg Berhalter for the second time after a poor showing at Copa America, with the consensus from critics that they needed to make a big name hire.
The former Chelsea coach comes in with an impressive resumé, probably the best the US has ever seen. He is known for a high pressing 4-2-3-1 attacking style of play and development of young players, which does sound like a good change for the national team.
Pochettino started in La Liga with Espanyol back in 2009 where he dealt with reported financial restrictions but established a system from the youth academy to the senior team which drew praise.
He then made the move to Southampton in 2013 where he lead the team to an 8th place finish which was the Saints best finish and highest point total in several years.
2014 saw him move over to Totthenham, the move that really made him a big name coach. They were immediately in contention in 2015, finishing the season 3rd in the table. The following season they had a second place finish, another great finish for the squad. His best season was 2019, where the Spurs made the Champions League final but lost to Liverpool.
In 2021, Pochettino found himself at PSG which saw him lead the team to a French Super Cup win, loss in the Champions League semis to Manchester City, Coupe de France title and second place finish in the league by a single point behind the champions in Lille. He did get PSG the ligue1 title the very next season, though.
In 2023, he was back in the Premier League as the coach of Chelsea, immediately taking the team to the EFL cup final but lose to Liverpool. He had issues with management over strategy and squad management that did lead to his dismissal in May of 2024
Pochettino has coached many big name players, that have been very successful under him, some of them you may have heard of: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Messi just to name a few. Pochettino hasn't been officially named yet as their is an issue with his Chelsea contract that the US have to figure out first but I doubt it isn't one that wouldn't be solved soon.
So do you like the move to get Pochettino and his attacking style of play, working the ball out of the back trying to work passes into the box?
I appreciate you for reading...enjoy your day!

Testing the new lighting of Burgos Cathedral.
The Burgos Cathedral is located in the historical centre of the Spanish city of the same name, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, in the northern Iberian Peninsula. The inscribed property encompasses 1.03 ha. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1221 and was completed in 1567. It is a comprehensive example of the evolution of Gothic style, with the entire history of Gothic art exhibited in its superb architecture and unique collection of art, including paintings, choir stalls, reredos, tombs, and stained-glass windows. The plan of the Cathedral is based on a Latin Cross of harmonious proportions of 84 by 59 metres. The three-story elevation, the vaulting, and the tracery of the windows are closely related to contemporary models of the north of France. The portals of the transept (the Puerta del Sarmental to the south and the Puerta de la Coronería to the north) may also be compared to the great sculpted ensembles of the French royal domain, while the enamelled, brass tomb of Bishop Mauricio resembles the so-called Limoges goldsmith work. Undertaken after the Cathedral, the two-storied cloister, which was completed towards 1280, still fits within the framework of the French high Gothic.

2023 / 01
Aperçu of the Week:
"You only live twice. Once when you are born and once when you look death in the face."
(Ian Fleming's James Bond)
Bad News of the Week:
"The Return of the Reconciler" headlines Der Spiegel, a renowned German political weekly, its article on the inauguration of Brazil's new (and old) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He takes office in difficult times. The general conditions are anything but favorable, whether economically, socially or psychologically. Because the country is deeply divided due to the polarizing polemics of his predecessor in office; it is not for nothing that Jair Bolsonaro has been called "Tropical Trump."
It will be difficult for Lula, says political scientist Mauricio Santoro of the University of Rio de Janeiro, among others. Unlike when he first took office in 2003, Lula can now rely neither on a boom in commodity exports nor on a humming Chinese economy. "Today we have a polarized country with an extreme right that is well organized both in the streets and on the net. And we live in a world still suffering the consequences of the pandemic, plus the war in Ukraine and its impact on inflation, food prices and oil."
For this reason, among others, the problem will be that Lula will not be able to fulfill the hopes placed in him. Not in the short term, not in the medium term. But with such negative omens, no one could. What always suffers most in such constellations are projects that are designed for the long term. Because these cost money and effort now, but the result will only be noticeable in the distant future. Or supposedly not at all. At least locally. Like the set of issues that most western people are most concerned about Brazil: environmental protection, stopping the depletion of the Amazon rainforest, preserving biodiversity, protecting indigenous minorities, and so on.
When a Brazilian community has a choice between jobs and personal income from slash-and-burn forest clearing or nothing to eat on the table, but a clear conscience in the face of taking global responsibility, I suspect they know the choice. And can you blame them? After all, you have to be able to afford a clear conscience. In this respect, it will become all the more decisive if humanity still wants to have a chance that precisely this happens: to think globally. If people in Germany only think about protecting the bees in their own village, calming the traffic on their own doorstep and the eco-tariff on their own electricity bill, that won't be enough.
Good News of the Week:
This year, Germany will lead NATO's rapid reaction force. In view of all the negative headlines of recent times, one should really be afraid: the Bundeswehr is running out of ammunition, 18 of 18 modern Puma tanks failed during a training exercise, the troops are blind to the right, the procurement system is not working, and Defense Minister Christine Lamprecht is obviously hopelessly overtaxed by her job in technical, factual and personal terms.
And now Germany, of all countries, is taking over command of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force in the face of a diffuse threat situation. In the event of a crisis, it is on the front line, responsible for the so-called spearhead, which is supposed to mobilize up to 20,000 soldiers within a few days, and perhaps even has to do so. A nightmare?
No. For two reasons. First, the task suits the quintessential German organizational talent coupled with a cool head. And second, the German military is a parliamentary army geared toward defense. It has no undemocratic claim to omnipotence like the United States. It has no glorification of a bygone past like France. It has not the instrumentalization of geostrategic hubris like Great Britain. It has not wounded vanity like Poland. It has no questionable loyalty to the alliance like Hungary.
Should it actually become necessary for the rapid reaction force to intervene quickly, it will work. Because neither national nor personal egos will play a role, only insight into necessities. The German mindset will neither unnecessarily pour gasoline on a fire nor dither in the face of real challenges. That lets me sleep reasonably soundly.
Personal happy moment of the week:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. If this were true in digital life, no one in our family would ever be sick. Because we're an Apple family: I bought my first Macintosh in 1988. Had the first MacBook. The first iPod. The first AppleTV. The first iPhone. The first iPad. The first AppleWatch. In the meantime, I can no longer afford to always be up to date - so I'm typing this text on an iPad Pro of the 1st generation, i.e. from 2015, which is ages ago. Nevertheless, my children have been raised to be Apple children with their mother's milk, so to speak. In my younger years, I always gave my old devices to my older daughter first, and then she gave them to my younger son. At some point, this became too "old fashioned" for them in a figurative sense.
First, my daughter put her first self-earned money into various iDevices and is therefore now more up-to-date than I am. And last week my son followed suit and invested his collected "Christmas income". The festive unboxing reminded me of me back in the day. There were new things to discover all day: His own Apple ID. The first scribble with the Apple Pencil. He also made his first phone call afterwards via his AppleWatch - with his grandparents, who ultimately sponsored the whole thing significantly. And Dad's eyes also lit up. Always beautiful. Just like the old days.
I couldn't care less...
...that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI - also known as "Papa Ratzi" in Germany because of his civil name Joseph Ratzinger - didn't make it into the new year. Firstly, he was allowed to turn a venerable 95 years old, all inclusive with his private staff. Which fits in well with the saying "weeds never die". For all his life he was a hardcore Catholic functionary dropped out of time.
Benedict covered up for pedo-criminals during his bishop days in Munich. In his 20 years at the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he always refused even the slightest progressive development. Refused any German admission of guilt for the Shoa at Auschwitz, of all places. More than once, he has run afoul of his successor, most recently two years ago with a pamphlet in favor of celibacy. He seriously considered himself infallible. It is a pity that we here on earth will never know whether his supreme judge will let him go to heaven or to some place else.
As I write this...
...I am a little stunned. After each year, a balance sheet is drawn up, evaluations are made in every conceivable category, and winners are chosen. In the land of poets and thinkers, of course, this also applies to language. Among other things, the "cliché expression of the year" is chosen. And for 2022, the first place goes to "freedom." I beg your pardon? At this time of all times, this ideal, this noble goal of every democratic society is supposed to be just a cliché?
The official explanation is that "freedom" is not the subject of criticism or even a hollow phrase. But "egoistic misinterpretations" in the media have turned it into that. The term is "degraded by egomaniacs who ruthlessly undermine democratic social structures." In the name of freedom, they "self-righteously and unsolidaristically turn the essential values of a welfare state into the opposite - everything for their own benefit." Aha. If that's the case, we shouldn't take up this beating.
Post Scriptum
After Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 2020, Marcus Tullius Cicero in 2021 and Sigmund Freud in 2022, this year it is Aristotle whom I have chosen as a "symbolic thinker". The 4th century B.C. Greek polymath is undoubtedly one of history's best-known and most influential philosophers and naturalists. A student of Plato, he either founded or significantly influenced numerous disciplines: philosophy of science, political and natural philosophy, logic, biology, medicine, physics, metaphysics, ethics, the theory of the state, and poetics and poetry theory.
The statue shown is located in Aristotle Park on the east coast of the Greek peninsula of Halkidiki, about 100 km from Thessaloniki. For the first half of 2023, Aristotle holds a newspaper with the headline "Crises everywhere" and wears a peace button on his cape. One is an unfortunately ubiquitous inventory, the other a symbol of hope.

MIT affiliates receive 2024-25 awards and honors from the American Physical Society
A number of individuals with MIT ties have received honors from the American Physical Society (APS) for 2024 and 2025.
Awardees include Professor Frances Ross; Professor Vladan Vuletić, graduate student Jiliang Hu ’19, PhD ’24; as well as 10 alumni. New APS Fellows include Professor Joseph Checkelsky, Senior Researcher John Chiaverini, Associate Professor Areg Danagoulian, Professor Ruben Juanes, and seven alumni.
Frances M. Ross, the TDK Professor in Materials Science and Engineering, received the 2025 Joseph F. Keithley Award For Advances in Measurement Science “for groundbreaking advances in in situ electron microscopy in vacuum and liquid environments.”
Ross uses transmission electron microscopy to watch crystals as they grow and react under different conditions, including both liquid and gaseous environments. The microscopy techniques developed over Ross’ research career help in exploring growth mechanisms during epitaxy, catalysis, and electrochemical deposition, with applications in microelectronics and energy storage. Ross’ research group continues to develop new microscopy instrumentation to enable deeper exploration of these processes.
Vladan Vuletić, the Lester Wolfe Professor of Physics, received the 2025 Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science “for pioneering work on spin squeezing for optical atomic clocks, quantum nonlinear optics, and laser cooling to quantum degeneracy.” Vuletić’s research includes ultracold atoms, laser cooling, large-scale quantum entanglement, quantum optics, precision tests of physics beyond the Standard Model, and quantum simulation and computing with trapped neutral atoms.
His Experimental Atomic Physics Group is also affiliated with the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms and the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). In 2020, his group showed that the precision of current atomic clocks could be improved by entangling the atoms — a quantum phenomenon by which particles are coerced to behave in a collective, highly correlated state.
Jiliang Hu received the 2024 Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Biological Physics “for groundbreaking biophysical contributions to microbial ecology that bridge experiment and theory, showing how only a few coarse-grained features of ecological networks can predict emergent phases of diversity, dynamics, and invasibility in microbial communities.”
Hu is working in PhD advisor Professor Jeff Gore’s lab. He is interested in exploring the high-dimensional dynamics and emergent phenomena of complex microbial communities. In his first project, he demonstrated that multi-species communities can be described by a phase diagram as a function of the strength of interspecies interactions and the diversity of the species pool. He is now studying alternative stable states and the role of migration in the dynamics and biodiversity of metacommunities.

Palestinian Journalists Win World Press Freedom Prize For Gaza War, Forever Palestine 🇵🇸, Coverage
UNESCO Pays Tribute To "Courage" Of Journalists Facing "Dangerous Circumstances" In Besieged Gaza Where “The Terroris, Fascist, Apartheid, War Criminal, The Bastard Child of The US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Australia And The Rest of The Puppet West, The Illegal Regime of The Zionist 🐖 🐷 🐖 🐗: Isra-hell” Has Killed More Than 140 Journalists Since October Last Year.
UNESCO - the UN body that promotes world peace and security - has awarded its World Press Freedom Prize to all Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza, where Israel has launched a brutal invasion for more than six months, killing tens of thousands of civilians and turning the tiny enclave into the "deadliest" place for journalists in recent history.
"In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we wish to share a strong message of solidarity and recognition to those Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances," Mauricio Weibel, chair of the international jury of media professionals announced on Thursday.
Israel's war on besieged Gaza has become the deadliest, most dangerous conflict for journalists in recent history, UN experts say. Photo: AA
"As humanity, we have a huge debt to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression," he added. Audrey Azoulay, director general at UNESCO, said the prize paid "tribute to the courage of journalists facing difficult and dangerous circumstances."
Last week a Palestinian journalist was killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, taking the death toll to 142 media personnel since October 7, 2023, according to Anadolu Agency.
Salem Abu Toyor, a reporter for Al-Quds TV, and his son lost their lives when Israeli fighter jets struck their home in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, the TV station said.
The pair were buried in the central city of Deir al Balah.
'No Journalist In Gaza Is Spared'
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) - a global body that promotes press freedom worldwide - says journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli assault, including devastating Israeli airstrikes.
Christophe Deloire, the secretary general of Reporters Without Borders, Paris-based non-governmental organisation focused on safeguarding the right to freedom of information, said, "If the numbers show anything, it is that since October 7, no place in Gaza is safe, no journalist in Gaza is spared, and the massacre has not stopped. We reiterate our urgent appeal to protect journalists in Gaza."
Only UN Prize For Journalists
World Press Freedom Prize honours an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.
It is the only such prize awarded to journalists by the UN.
The ongoing Israeli war on Gaza has resulted in devastating casualties.
Israeli military has killed at least 34,596 Palestinians, with a staggering 70 percent being babies, children, and women, Palestinian officials say.
Additionally, more than 77,816 individuals have been wounded, while over10,000 people are feared buried under the debris of bombed structures.

Chelsea Set Plans To Sell Six First Team Stars After Huge Summer Spending
Chelsea are reportedly accelerating plans to move on several players before the end of the summer transfer window.
The Blues have spent the most money in the Premier League this transfer window. A deal for Romeo Lavia from Southampton is anticipated to follow the £115 million acquisition of Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion.
However, Chelsea’s buying binge is expected to continue with the triggering of Michael Olise’s £35 million release clause. Making him the club’s 25th acquisition in under a year.
The ownership group of Chelsea have nearly spent £1 billion on new players. Chelsea have been reducing Mauricio Pochettino’s squad while also adding fresh players for the newly appointed manager.According to the Evening Standard via the Daily Star, Chelsea are attempting to ‘accelerate’ their plans to sell six players before the deadline of September 1. Conor Gallagher is one player who may be leaving the club, according to the reports.
The signing of Caicedo and competition from Lavia for a position in midfield could force the England international, who is still up for transfer, out the door.
Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Callum Hudson-Odoi are three other players who have no place in Pochettino’s plans for the 2023/24 season. All three are reportedly close to leaving the club. Trevoh Chalobah and Ian Maatsen are two other players that Chelsea wish to sell.
With Raheem Sterling, Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke in the mix, Chelsea’s wide spots will experience heightened competition with Olise’s impending arrival.
Olise, a player for France’s under-21 national team, is anticipated to be the London club’s final acquisition of the summer transfer season. https://www.completesports.com/chelsea-set-plans-to-sell-six-first-team-stars-after-huge-summer-spending/

Kylian Mbappe to Chelsea transfer update as Todd Boehly takes key step to secure stunning move
Kylian Mbappe to Chelsea transfer update as Todd Boehly takes key step to secure stunning move According to reports, Chelsea has joined Liverpool and Real Madrid in the pursuit of Kylian Mbappe. The 24-year-old striker's future at Paris Saint-Germain has become uncertain as his contract in France is set to expire at the end of the upcoming season. Earlier, Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated that Mbappe has a two-week window to sign a new contract with PSG; otherwise, he will be put up for sale. However, even after four weeks, the French forward has not committed to staying at PSG or found a new club. As it seems likely that Mbappe will seek new opportunities, either this summer or the next, reports suggest that Chelsea is now in the race to sign him. The Daily Record claims that Chelsea is attempting to negotiate a deal involving a player-plus-cash exchange to bring the talented Frenchman to Stamford Bridge. According to the report, Paris Saint-Germain has supported Chelsea's endeavors to sign Kylian Mbappe and has engaged in direct discussions with Todd Boehly regarding a potential transfer. On the other hand, there is no mention of Real Madrid entering talks with PSG since the player became available for sale at a price of €250 million (£214 million). Earlier this week, Mauricio Pochettino was asked whether he would be interested in reuniting with both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at Chelsea. The Blues boss said: "I think in our past we were at Paris Saint Germain and with Kylian and think I need to be conscious that I cannot talk. "Everything you talk is too much noise. It is a situation that is very delicate and one they need to fix in Paris with Kylian. For our side I have nothing to say. We are working on our reality, our reality is different. From my side, nothing to say, only to supporter them. "I hope they find a solution for both sides. It is a club that I love, because I was a player, a captain and coach. With Kylian we create a very good relationship, I hope they can find the best solution for both sides."
