Time Travel Question 51: Early Modernish and Earlier
These Questions are the result of suggestions a the previous iteration. This category may include suggestions made too late to fall into the correct earlier time grouping. In some cases a culture lasted a really long time and I grouped them by whether it was likely the later or earlier grouping made the most sense with the information I had.
Please add new suggestions below if you have them for future consideration. All cultures and time periods welcome.

Printemps 1931 - Champs-les-Sims
3/3

Shakespeare Weekend
We are halfway through Nicholas Rowe’s (1674-1718) The Work of Mr. William Shakespear; in Six Volumes! Published in London in 1709 by Jacob Tonson (1655–1736), this second edition holds an important place within Shakespearean publication history. The Work of Mr. William Shakespear; in Six Volumes is recognized as the first octavo edition, the first illustrated edition, the first critically edited edition, and the first to present a biography of the poet.
This week, we explore the third volume of The Work of Mr. William Shakespear; in Six Volumes. The third volume encompasses historic plays including a Shakespearean Henriad depicting the rise of English kings. The volume is comprised of King John, King Richard II, Henry IV Part I, Henry IV Part II, King Henry V, King Henry VI Part I, and King Henry VI Part II. While the plays have recurring characters and settings, there is no evidence that they were written with the intention of being considered as a group. A full-page engraving, designed by the French Baroque artist and book illustrator François Boitard (1670-1715) and engraved by English engraver Elisha Kirkall (c.1682–1742), precedes each play.
In addition to Rowe’s editorial decisions to divide the plays into scenes and include notes on the entrances and exits of the players, he also normalised the spelling of names and included a dramatis personae preceding each play. The only chronicled critique of Rowe’s momentous editorial endeavor is his choice in basing his text on the corrupt Fourth Folio.

François Clouet   (FR, 1510 - 1572)
Dame au bain (A Lady in Her Bath), ca. 1571 [detail]. Oil on oak wood 92.3 × 81.2 cm (36.3 × 31.9 in) Collection National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
The allegorical analysis of many details (ironic presence of the unicorn; bowl of fruit, symbol of sensual gluttony with the bunch of grapes, red carnation symbol of her multiple engagements) suggests that the bare-breasted woman is Mary Stuart whose sentimental deviations were the laughingstock of all Europe.)
The painting could also be an allegory of the three theological virtues: the child would be hope, the nurse would be nourishing faith and the naked woman would be charity.
The National Gallery writes:
The masklike symmetry of the bather's face makes exact identification difficult; scholars have suggested that her aristocratic features indicate that she is one of several royal mistresses of Henry II, most notable among them Diane de Poitiers. It is possible that the nude, a Venus type, represents ideal beauty rather than a specific individual. The contrast of the smoothly rendered nude figure to the intricate surface details of the fruit, draperies, and jewelry, presents a union of Flemish and Italian motifs that characterized French courtly art of the sixteenth century.

The Three Musketeers - Part II: Milady
Tumblr media
The Three Musketeers - Part II: Milady    [trailer]
D'Artagnan is forced to join forces with Milady to save Constance, who was kidnapped before his eyes. But as war is declared a secret from the past shatters old alliances.
Equally entertaining second part. This time with a bit more focus on Milady de Winter, portrayed by Eva Green, who's ideally cast.
It's just one big story. So it's best to watch the two films in one go. Thanks to their pace it's easy to do so.
