How to Move On

When the time comes, keep in mind that you knew this would happen. Hold your father as he cries. Find the strength to not cry with him.

Fly the thousand miles to watch them lower his body into the ground. Let the priest speak hollow words about God’s plan and a better place. Tell yourself it’s all bullshit anyways. Pray to someone you don’t believe in that it’s not.

Hold your Grandmother’s hand. Imagine how empty it must feel to her. Make sure, now that he can’t, you are always there to take it. Play Chinese Checkers with her and eat casseroles from the neighbors until your stomach feels heavier than his absence.

Watch her when she isn't looking. See how fragile he has left her. Think of how he left her: without knowing who she was or what she meant to him. Fifty years of marriage, gone. Fifty years of love, forgotten.

Remember how it felt the day when he forgot you. How your name died on his lips. How your face fled from his mind. Tie up the memories in a box. Push them off the nearest cliff.

Fly the thousand miles home to a messy house. Feel it start to suffocate you. Attempt to clean it. Realize that you don’t know where to start. Understand that grief is a stubborn stain.

Find the box drifting in the waves. Tear it open and feel. Let yourself be angry. Hold on to it. Then let it go. Forgive him for leaving. Forgive him for letting the disease win. Know that it wasn't his fault. Move on. Not all at once, but in pieces.

Start to breathe again. Show your lungs how to love the air again. Dance barefoot in the grass. Remember what it means to be alive. Look to the sky, and promise him you will never forget.
