Heart of the Forest

trying to get back into the groove of writing, so this is a mostly stream of consciousness little piece that i wrote today. i'd love any kind feedback, encouragement, or constructive criticism as i'm trying to improve my writing. thanks guys! <3

Apollo took the hand of his lover, gently guiding him to the grove of trees near their encampment. Hyacinthus went willingly, grinning up at his golden lover as they slowly meandered their way towards the trees. The embankment they were under provided succor and shelter as the two men gazed into each other’s eyes. Slowly, twilight turned into dusk as they coupled, learning once more the secret ins and outs of each other’s persons. Every gasp and sigh and moan and flutter all wove together to form the heady spell of the grove they inhabited. Birds twittered in the trees and little sprites danced gaily among the leaves as they came together again and again, resting in each other’s arms as they drowsily professed their love. Wine and other refreshments were brought out in due course, and the lovers drank and supped to their hearts’ content. And when it came time for Hyacinthus to don once more his garments that spake of his identity as one of the wandering Dúnedain, he did so with a marked reluctance. A glowing hand gently stroked his arm as Apollo observed his lover transform once more into the silent hunter, a presence nearly indistinguishable from the grass and dirt, except for those who had clear sight. Sighing, Hyacinthus bestowed a wistful smile upon Apollo and drew him in for one last, passionate kiss, before slipping softly into the trees, catching the last rays of dusk on his bow as he left their private grove.

The wind whistled, and there seemed to come both a chilling and a calming of the forest. Apollo straightened, gathering his own loose chiton around himself, but was arrested by a presence at his back.

“You are lucky, little brother.” The voice was measured, moderated, but he knew that voice, knew the ire that could so easily be stirred up within it. “Your favor with the sun god has granted you credit in my woods. Try not to push it to the limit.”

“Ah, little sister.” He could feel her bristle behind him at the inaccurate epithet, “You always know how to brighten my day.”

“Night, more like. You know your allotted time with the mortal ends at dusk. I repeat, do not push your favor with Lord Helios. Though he may have granted you and your lovers the use of the day, it is I who rule the night. Do not abuse this privilege.”

Turning to face his sister, Apollo gazed full into the face of Artemis. His elder by mere minutes, she still gazed upon him with the dread gaze that had turned many a mortal into a cowering beast. Yet Apollo gazed without fear, a lifted brow and a playful smirk gently testing the limits of his sister’s patience. Her stony gaze remained unchanged as she stood, regal with her knarled walking stick set before her like a scepter. And for all intents and purposes it was.

“See to it your lover knows the conditions of our agreement.” She finally spoke. Apollo dipped his head in acknowledgement, then slowly, ever so slowly, he shimmed up the bark of a tree and caught the last dying rays of the sun back up to his golden castle nestled near the heart of Olympus. Artemis tracked his progress up the sky, her brow knit with that special blend of irritation and almost motherly concern that she always felt towards her little brother. Once his golden train fully vanished above the cloudy cover dotting the horizon, Artemis sighed again. Her silver hair seemed to shine all the more brilliantly, and she lifted her fingers to her lips, summoning her Hunters with the invisible whistle heard only to their ears. The scampering of their feet could not be heard but only felt as the girls slipped through the trees, answering forever to their leader’s call.

 “Though the young King’s heart be yours, little brother, the heart of the Forest be mine forevermore.” Whispered the radiant goddess, with the pulse and the fury of the chase filling her veins. It would be a good hunt tonight.
