Daphne/Velma one-shot. Prompt from... myself, because I literally can’t with myself. Rated G. (Short summary: Velma tries to come to terms with her emotions at two in the morning.) AO3! if you prefer reading it there, of course. Thank you, again, to @apapercheesecake for being my proofreader and emotional support. <3 If anyone else wants to send me prompts, PLEASE hmu. Help me revive this fandom, lmao.
Do you ever look up at the stars and wonder if I’m looking at them as well?
She’s aware that it’s well past midnight, but she doesn’t care. Velma sits at her desk, as she’s done for hours beforehand, staring out of the window right above it. The Milky Way is beautiful. Mysterious. Sometimes, she can barely believe that the Earth is a part of this sea of light and wonder.
Tonight, though, a sadness hangs in the sky. There’s a certain… something. The usual spark is gone, replaced with a feeling of… gloominess.
Maybe quarantine has finally gotten to her, surrounding her like a bad omen.
Or maybe it’s her own melancholy dragging her down.
I am not upset, she accuses herself, but even as she does so, she subconsciously wipes a tear away, feels the path of tears that had dried long ago on her face. I’m not! she tries again, to no avail.
New tears begin falling down her face.
So much for being not upset.
“Shut up,” she says out loud.
There’s no one else around. It’s two in the morning. In the back of her mind, she knows she should sleep. Sleep her anxiety away. Sleep all of her worries away.
Even nowadays, however, sleeping seems like a trap, one concocted by Fred in terms of how well it works. Whenever she tries to rest, she’s thrown into a terrible world—one where she stands, frozen, as her friends collapse around her. Where she sees a flash of bright ginger hair fall with them, and she realizes the sun would never rise again—
She shakes her head, and glances back up at the infinite universe beyond her reach. I wonder if she still cares?
She. Daphne. Just her name makes Velma feel a little nervous. Jittery. She feels her chest ache with longing.
She can’t remember the last time anyone made her feel like that, because there wasn’t anyone.
Daphne always made her feel loved. Beautiful, even, when Daphne was the pretty one—so why is it that the other girl is suddenly ignoring her?
She’s not.
Deep down, she knows Daphne isn’t that kind of person—but it’s been almost three months since receiving her last text message. She’s aware that Daphne is terrible at responding to text messages, especially since the other girl is actually popular. She’s seen the absolutely ridiculous amounts of notifications Daphne receives every day, from trashy girls who just want a status boost in the community to pushy jocks who are only after her money… and her body. She’s probably getting way more messages than usual, she reasons, now that no one has anything better to do.
She doesn’t understand how Daphne deals with it, considering that Velma wants to chuck her set of encyclopedias at every single one of those fake, spoiled brats.
(They don’t even deserve to have encyclopedias thrown at them. Those idiots are worth as much as the Twilight series. They do have one thing in common, though; they should all burn in a fire.)
With all that in mind, there’s no possible way Daphne could be ignoring her, so why is Velma so scared?—and why is it that she can’t convince herself otherwise?
She grits her teeth, tries to will the negativity to just leave her alone. She wants to feel good about herself, feel good about her relationship with Daphne.
But I can’t.
Daphne is the sun and Velma… well, if we’re going with this analogy, I’m basically Pluto. Small, insignificant, distant. Demoted and degraded because people saw who I really was.
If Daphne is the sun, then maybe she’s distancing herself for a reason. If drawn too close, a tiny dwarf planet like Pluto would burn up.
Burn up or not, I’d try to get closer anyway. I’m… I think I’m addicted.
She reminds herself of the last time she felt this way, the last time she depended on someone like this. How she spent so much time with them, just studying and understanding and giving, only to find out that she had been associating herself with someone so ridiculously fake.
Like a fake planet—wait, am I that fake too?
Her thoughts come to a full stop as she tries to process the idea—what if she, too, is just as fake as Daphne’s so-called “fans”? There is plenty that Velma has concealed within the deepest recesses of her heart. She’s passionate about anything related to logic or pure fact—that’s what she’s known for, after all.
Her actual feelings, however, she keeps hidden. She refuses to talk to anyone about her raw emotions, except the obvious exception. Even then, the other girl has to catch her in a particular vulnerable state of mind. She wonders if hiding her feelings makes her a terrible person. Daphne has always been open to her, but it’s never been the other way around. It makes her feel vulnerable. She detests the idea that it could happen again. That someone might take advantage of her if she opens herself up.
That, she realizes. That’s why I’m so afraid. She’s terrified that people will keep coming and leaving, taking pieces of her as they go. Hundreds and thousands of people, ripping her into shreds and snatching what they can, before eventually they no longer need her and there’s nothing left of her.
Being with Daphne makes all of those unpleasant thoughts go away. Velma feels so hopeless alone, like she’s lost in the middle of space, so she clings onto Daphne like a rope thrown to guide her back to the spacecraft. Without Daphne, she drifts further into the unknown, into the darkness, into the black hole that is her own mind, plaguing herself with the doubts of years long past.
She shakes her head to clear her mind, before suddenly jolting. In her stupor, she hadn’t noticed her phone ringing. She glances down to see Daphne’s name lit up on the screen.
Oh!
The girl immediately swipes to answer the call. As soon as the screen changes, she turns speaker mode on.
“Hi Daph,” she says. She immediately curses herself for how wobbly her voice sounds.
There is a slight pause on the other end of the phone, before Daphne’s voice fills her ears.
“Oh! Hey Velm! I knew you weren’t asleep, because you never sleep at this time, but you didn’t respond to my other eight phone calls—”
“Wait, what?” She frantically checks her phone notifications to see that she indeed has eight missed calls. “Oh, I’m so sorry, I was… I spaced out.”
Another pause. “You never space out.” The tone is accusing, but the volume is gentle. Quiet. “What’s going on? Is something wrong?”
“N-no.” She hears Daphne sigh. “Okay, fine, yes. I just… I miss you. It feels lonely here. For once, books can’t solve my problems.”
She’s almost impressed by how smoothly the words leave her mouth. On any other given day, she wouldn’t have relented so quickly, even to the other girl.
I must be really out of it.
“It’s fine, really,” she adds, in hopes of reassuring Daphne. “How are you doing?”
There’s some rustling before Daphne speaks again. “I’ll tell you when I get there.”
“Get wh—Daph, no, we’re in the middle of a pandemic!”
“Open your back window for me!”
“Daphne Blake—”
The phone beeps and Velma heaves a sigh. Having Daph over would be nice, she tells herself, just as the knocking begins. She looks over to see Daphne grinning through the glass.
After Velma’s pulled Daphne through the window and knocked both of them onto the floor in the process, she begins her interrogation. “Okay, explain,” she hisses, standing up.
“Explain what?” Daphne says innocently.
“Why are you here?”
The taller girl stands up as well. “Well, for starters, I haven’t responded to your texts in three months, and I feel like giving you a phone call and apologizing wasn’t going to cut it.” Okay, fair. “Also, you always respond to your calls within three rings, no matter what time it is. I figured something was wrong. Then you told me, surprisingly, told me about how you were lonely and said books weren’t helping without me needing to pry, so I knew something was definitely up.”
Velma stares at her and Daphne shrugs.
“And judging by your face, you’ve been crying as well.”
“As if you needed to add that after perfectly analyzing my entire afternoon and evening,” Velma says, crossing her arms. She hates how Daphne read her like a book.
“Well, I’m a mystery solver too.”
“A damn good one.”
Daphne smiles. “I learned from the best.”
“You flatter me,” she responds, trying to scowl at Daphne for her ridiculousness. Daphne has always been a master mystery solver—it was just a fact.
Despite it all, Velma finds herself smiling back. Daphne’s smile has always been bright. Contagious. Pretty.
At least one thing hasn’t changed.
“You missed me.”
She raises an eyebrow. “It’s not hard to guess that, considering I told you that.”
The smile twists into a smirk. Normally, on any other day, she would be flustered, even a little annoyed. Instead, Velma’s reminded of just how lucky she is. She gets to see all of Daphne, not just the bits and pieces she chooses to show to the public eye.
“So you admit it,” is all Daphne says.
“I don’t know what your point is, but don’t get used to it,” Velma responds flatly. She’s still grinning, though, because she can’t help it. It’s been too long since she’s last seen Daphne and she’s excited.
So excited, in fact, that she’s barely able to restrain herself when Daphne raises her arms to offer her a hug.
“Daph, social distancing.”
“You literally opened the window and pulled me inside your room and you’re only now worrying about social distancing?”
She feels her face heat up. “I couldn’t just leave you outside!”
“And I couldn’t just leave you here while you were all mopey and sad!”
“I am not mopey—”
“Velm, I love you, but please before my arms fall off—”
Her heart begins racing and the tears begin falling. Fast. She loves me, she repeats to herself. She loves me.
“Wait, no, Velm, please don’t cry!” she hears Daphne cry in desperation. She tries opening her mouth, tries pouring her heart back out to Daphne, but she’s sobbing loudly to respond. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have—”
She feels herself panic enough to choke out “it’s not that, Daph.” Thankfully, it’s enough. The taller girl gently guides Velma to her bed, coaxes Velma to lean on her. Daphne slips a hand around her waist and kisses her head. Murmurs galaxies upon galaxies of tender, reassuring words. Subconsciously, she returns the hug and she holds on tight, holds onto that life-saving rope.
It’s warm. Safe.
She leans into Daphne’s touch, takes a few deep breaths. She inhales, catches a whiff of Daphne’s signature perfume, and nearly bursts into tears again.
“I’ve got you,” Daphne whispers. “Take as much time as you need. I’m here, I promise.”
Velma nods into Daphne’s shoulder.
“But afterwards, I owe you another thousand apologies and a well-worded explanation.”
She chuckles at this. “That seems fair.”
When even her hiccups are gone, she speaks again.
“I’m ready,” she tells Daphne. “Thank you.”
She feels Daphne smile against her hair before launching into a lengthy explanation. Velma is barely paying attention, however. She doesn’t care about what happened. She’s just glad that Daphne is back.
It may be far away and insignificant, but even Pluto has seasons. And winter is finally over, she thinks.
“I’m sorry,” Daphne repeats again, snapping Velma out of her trance.
“Do me a favor and stop apologizing,” she says, pulling away to glare at Daphne. As the other girl opens her mouth, presumably to apologize for apologizing, Velma pulls her into a kiss.
Daphne raises an eyebrow when they part. “I thought you were worried about social distancing.”
“I was being stupid,” Velma admits. “Even the size of the universe is trivial compared to my love for you.”
Of course I think about you when I look at the stars. You are all I think about when I look at them.

Reprise
*wipes sweat from brow* Woo! I’m starting to get tired! No matter, I’m still having a lot of fun!:)
Some fluff to start 2021 off right. (All G today!)
Reprise: a recurrence or repetition of something.
The letters appeared in his mailbox every day at noon on the dot. No return address, no name, just a beautifully penned love letter with a pressed flower inside. Lafayette decided to refer to his secret admirer as his flower.
***
The letters appeared in his mailbox every day at noon on the dot. No return address, no name, just a beautifully penned love letter with a pressed flower inside.
At first, Lafayette had panicked. Tried to track down the stranger, called the police, had his friends spend the night with him so felt safe, but nothing ever happened. The letters continued to arrive.
The contents were not at all worrying, they did not even sound overly maniac claiming to know Lafayette’s heart and soul, claiming to be madly in love with him. It was just that the writer admired him, wanted to know him, claimed to have never been overtaken by such a furious shyness until he saw Lafayette.
That part had worried him. The fact that this stranger knew his name, knew his face, worried him, but he realized thousands of people knew his name and face. Sure, they only appeared on early morning business shows, but it was enough that Lafayette shouldn’t have expected complete privacy. For all he knew, he could have met the writer of the letters at any of the hundreds of meetings he’s had to attend over the years.
He started to become excited to read what his admirer would write to him. They always found a new way to convey their feelings, in a respectful manner, but with lovely prose and delicate writing. With each letter came a new flower and he soon had a rapidly growing collection of pressed flowers in his office that always managed to brighten his day. He decided to refer to his admirer as his flower.
‘My flower has written me the sweetest letter today.’ He would tell his friends, showing off the flower that came along with it, tenderly tracing the petals and leaves. His friends insisted that he should not act so carefree, and he wasn’t. He always made sure to tell his friends exactly where he was going and when he arrived, even if he did not believe his flower to be a psychopath. It was more to soothe their worries because Lafayette trusted his flower.
He felt happiness and warmth bloom in his chest everytime he thought of his flower. He wondered what their gender might be, what their face might look like, how they managed to acquire so many flowers for him.
So one day, he wrote his flower a letter back. He didn’t know if it would suddenly change how his flower felt, would make them stop sending letters altogether. He frowned to think of never hearing from his tender-hearted flower again.
He placed it in his mailbox just before noon, but did not stick around to see just who was putting the letters in his mailbox. He didn’t want to ruin the mystery of his flower’s secret.
The letter he received the next day contained a sunflower and was signed, your flower . He giggled and added the sunflower to his large collection of flowers. It had begun to take up too much space in his office and he began carefully gluing and taping the flowers to the walls, the windows. His office was soon the most cheerful room in his entire apartment, and it was all thanks to his flower.
The exchange of letters between them took a new tone once they began speaking to each other. His flower confessed they saw Lafayette around and had heard his friends once refer to him as Lafayette. That they only happened to often be around their apartment he resided in often enough to know which box was his.
So they were someone that worked nearby, Lafayette concluded.
On one hand he wished to solve the mystery of his flower's identity, but on the other hand he worried it might ruin whatever strange path they had carved for themselves. The loving words were the best parts of Lafayette’s days, writing a response was second.
He learned more about his flower with every letter. Where they grew up, what their dreams were, what their favorite show was. The only thing he did not know was their face.
“Lafayette, I will not allow you to meet up with this creep.” Alexander hissed at him from across the table of the crowded coffee shop.
“Oh why not?” He grinned, “we would meet here! A public place and both you and John will be here! What could go wrong?”
“It’s not the meeting that worries me, but what might happen after. Lafayette, I’m worried you have developed feelings for this flower.” He glared, always the cynic.
“I suppose I have. Who would not after reading so many of their kind words?” He giggled, taking a sip of the sweet drink in his hand.
“Lafayette, how do you know they haven’t been stalking you?”
“Maybe they are.” He shrugged, “but after a whole year surely I would notice, don’t you think? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one stranger too often. Besides, they work all day. They don’t have time to stalk me.”
“They’re lying to you.”
“Or they’re telling the truth.” He grinned at his still angry friend. “Oh cheer up Alex!” He poked his friend, “if I have their name can’t you run a background check on them or something? You can even talk to them! John can talk to them! You and I both know that John has an uncanny ability to sort out the good and bad.”
“You will meet them here once.”
Lafayette almost rolled his eyes. With Alex’s permission or not, he was going to at least meet his flower. But he kept his mouth shut, the concern only came from love.
“Thank you Alex. And you have my permission to claw their eyes out if they’re a creep.”
Alex snorted, “I’ve never needed your permission.” Lafayette playfully smacked his dear friend and left to go back home and read the latest letter from his flower.
They met on a Sunday.
Lafayette had been a mess all day, fixing his hair, changing his outfit a dozen times, drinking water to keep his mouth from drying up due to nerves.
He was nervous to meet his flower. Terrified actually.
It wasn’t because he was afraid they might actually be a stalker, he was afraid they weren’t. He was afraid they would be delightful and beautiful and bright as the sun. And it terrified him.
He grabbed his bag, equipped with pepper spray, and texted Alex and John that he was on his way. On his way to meet his flower.
He arrived a good half hour before the time he said. He ordered a hot chocolate, and sat at a vacant table, twiddling his thumbs and waiting and waiting for his flower to arrive.
The more and more minutes passed, the more terrified he became. What if they did not come? What if a meeting really would shatter what they had? Would Lafayette be left sorely disappointed, aggravated at himself for being so trusting?
Every person that came through that door had his heart pounding in his chest, had him desperately searching each face to see if they were looking for someone. Looking for him.
He knew exactly who his flower was the moment they walked in.
Lafayette shot up out of his chair, scraping loudly behind him, but it did not matter to him. Their eyes met and a warm smile broke out on Lafayette’s face.
His flower was beautiful.
Their face was flushed when they sat across from him, not even bothering to order anything. Lafayette sat up straighter, just looking at his flower until he broke the silence.
“My name is Gilbert de Lafayette.” He held out his hand, and his flower grabbed it in his hand, face going warm.
“George Washington.” Lafayette had to bite his lip to keep from smiling too wide. His voice was gorgeous, his hand was warm, there was a kindness in his eyes and Lafayette knew he was falling too fast.
“Tell me about yourself, George. The things you wouldn’t tell me in your letters.” He grinned at him and George quickly turned to look at his hands resting on the table.
He cleared his throat, “I am the gardener.”
He chuckled when George finally revealed just how he knew him. He was the gardener, of course. It made sense, the beautiful bed of flowers growing outside the expensive apartment building. Someone had to maintain the beautiful blooms, it only made sense it would be his flower.
“I should have guessed as much.” He chuckled.
“You really did not know?”
Lafayette shook his head, “I’ve never seen anyone out there. It honestly never occurred to me.” Lafayette noticed George staring at his hair as he shook his head.
“But I would like to know something else.” George perked up, pulled out of his trance. “Why do all of this? I mean, why the letters, why the secrecy?”
“I told you, didn’t I? You evoke a new-found shyness within me.” Lafayette smiled, he could clearly see that. “But it is not only that, it is the fact that you are so intelligent, so driven and hardworking and with a station so far above mine I suppose I thought you would scorn me if you knew the truth.” He shook his head, eyes returning to his hands.
“Aw, I could never turn away my flower.” He winked and George began fidgeting. “As long as you’re not a weirdo of course.”
George shot him a mischievous look. “It depends on your definition of weirdo.”
Lafayette barked out a laugh. “Perhaps you are right!” He wiped the tear away and took a sip from his drink, rushing when he felt the warmth dribble down his chin.
George caught the droplet of chocolate before he could. He quickly pulled his hand away and cast his eyes to the ground. “I am so very sorry, I only didn’t want your nice clothes to get ruined.”
“And you have done me a great service.” George looked up, sheepish, blushing. A man that handsome was not allowed to be that damn cute.
His flower was sweet, quiet, but when he spoke Lafayette became consumed. He did not ramble on as Lafayette did, he made his every word count, each and every one carefully picked.
Lafayette prayed to the heavens this would not be the last he saw of George.
Beautiful, magnetizing, charming George, with a flower pinned to his shirt. Lafayette wanted to spend every day with George.
But he took his time. It took almost a year for George to earn Alex’s stamp of approval, another year for Lafayette to gain the courage to kiss him. But oddly enough, he did not mind the slow moving nature.
George told him every flower grew differently, each one needed a different and special kind of care. He compared them to people, saying that certain conditions might be exactly what a flower needs to thrive while to another it would be the death of it. He said some flowers took years to grow, others days. Some had sweet fragrances, others awful. He joked that in that way too people were like flowers.
It made sense to Lafayette. Everything about George just made sense, fit perfectly into his life the way no one ever had.
Lafayette married his flower seven years later. On the very day he received that first letter.

Works
(I was going to list rating/ship/squares filled, but all the works are Winteriron or at least pre-relationship Winteriron, because it’s me, so there’s just the rating and squares filled.)
Cherish the Living - E (R3, K4, T3, A5, R1, K3, R2, R4, K5, R5, S1, A3, S5)
Tony grew up on stories of the time before the virus, but that’s a world that’s long ago and far away. He now travels a route between the various walled settlements, trading goods and repairs for bread and board, and carrying news from one villa to the next. It’s a dangerous life, but one he’s used to and well-suited for. That is, until a cluster of zombies gets the drop on him.
Bucky is a Nomad, one of a band of enhanced humans who have sworn to wipe out all zombies and put an end to the zombie plague -- one at a time, if necessary. When he rescues Tony, he’s just doing his job. Agreeing to escort Tony to the next villa is a bit above-and-beyond, but it’s nice to have company after so long on the road alone. He didn’t expect the trip to forge a bond between the two of them that not nothing -- not even death -- could break.
As the Spirits Guide Us - E (A4/Adopted, T1)
The Clan of the Hydra value’s Bucky’s skill as a flintknapper but despises him for being a crippled outsider. The Clanchief, in particular, seems to enjoy watching Bucky suffer. Bucky dreams of escaping, of finding a home with a new Clan, one which will treat him kindly.
A talented maker and only child of the Keeper of the Way, Tony has only to complete this last rite before he can fully assume his place as an adult of the Star Clan. On this journey, the spirit-talker assures him, the spirits will bring him to meet his destined mate. Tony is pretty sure the selection of his mate has less to do with the spirits than with the machinations of his mother and the clan chief.
Little do either of them know what the spirits have in store.
You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore - T (A1)
Sure, Tony felt short of breath whenever he saw Bucky, and his throat tightened whenever he saw Bucky and Steve together, but he was sure he had his little crush on Bucky under control. When he started coughing up flower petals, however, he realized that he did not have it under control even a little bit.
The Perfect Solution - T (K1)
Despite telling Tony that they didn’t need to exchange gifts for their second dating anniversary, Bucky's got something for Tony -- a puzzle to solve. Or rather, several.
Nothing for the Nerves - T (S2)
Tony and Bucky have been dating for three months, and it is high time that Bucky met Tony’s friends. There’s nothing to be nervous about, of course.
...Right?
Leaving the Nest - T (T2/Adopted)
Tony’s spent his whole life training to be a dragon rider. That the dragon who’s chosen him is betrothed is only of minor concern; having to marry his dragon’s mate’s rider is well worth getting to fly. That is, until Tony falls in love with a common soldier and is faced with having to choose between his dream and his love.
After the End - T (A2)
Tony and Bucky have both been on Earth for a little over two thousand years. They’ve been lovers for just a little less than that, hiding it from their superiors Above and Below. But now the Antichrist has been delivered and things are swiftly coming to an End. How can they say goodbye, knowing they’ll never meet again?
Of course, things don’t always turn out the way they assume. God’s plan is ineffable, after all.
An Educational Outing - G (K2)
In which Professor Stark takes his Muggle Studies students on a field trip, with Professor Barnes’ help, and it does not go quite as planned.
One Man’s Trash - G (S3, T4, T5)
Mostly, when the ‘bots went out scavenging, they brought back junk. Circuit boards melted to slag, coils of wire that had fused together, bits of broken glass and charred remnants of furniture. Tony managed to find uses for it all -- in the wake of the War, there was no such thing as trash; everything got repurposed somehow -- but that didn’t change the fact that it was junk.
But once in a while, they happened across something good. A crate of transistors that had been miraculously shielded from damage. A handful of protein bars still sealed in their packages. Lengths of rebar. Tools, sometimes.
This time, they’ve really hit the jackpot.
Six Impossible Things - G (S4) * moodboard
Tony and Bucky have forgiven each other for their various transgressions and moved on with their lives, reconciled if not exactly comfortable with each other. Then, in the midst of a mission, they find themselves sucked into another dimension, one where the normal rules do not apply. One where six impossible things happen each day before breakfast.
Their only hope of getting home again is a journey through Wonderland to petition the mysterious Red Queen, who has the power to send them home – or to destroy them both. In order to escape, they’re going to have to work together to embrace Wonderland’s nonsensical rules. And maybe – just maybe – one of those impossible things will be them.
