"Do not take the crimes of those who have manipulated us and put them at the feet of the world. "
i feel like this quote rlly aptly demonstrates the difference between cinderella and the stepmother
the stepmother - who comes to realise that all she is is a prop for someone elses story. barely a villain, and barely even a character in her own right. and in her rage against a world so unjust, failing to recognise the abuse she has inflicted onto her children by her own hand. who fights back against cruelty with yet more cruelty to anyone and everyone in her path. like - she cannibalises the very daughters that she had supposedly "truly loved". she devours the evil queen, another 'villainous woman' archetype who would, more than anyone else, have empathy for and solidarity with the stepmothers motivations. the only person she showed caring and kindness to (briefly) was pinocchio - in order to trap, manipulate and control him. the only way out of an unfair system is the violent and spiteful accumulation of power to destroy that system
vs cinderella - also realising that she barely has agency within her own narrative. that her story is barely even hers. adopting the same rage against her unnecessary suffering and the same mission to defy the authors. which, from what we know of her so far, she does through kindness and solidarity. she allies with snow white, and offers support and guidance to rosamund. she is still looking for the other princesses who are struggling the same way in the times of shadow. her way out of an unfair world is to band together with the people who have been mistreated - because they have all been mistreated - and working together to build something better. (in a way, perhaps it could also be about breaking out of the cycles of abuse - rejecting the idea that the world must be pain, escaping the person someone was trying to mould you into, and carving a way out for other people too. supporting and being supported). but the way forward is with other people, and blame is not laid at the feet of the world but the forces who made the world the way it is.
anyway. its making me a bit crazy that both of them realised they were one-dimensional characters: and one of them buried herself deeper into that role into fullscale pure-evil villainy, and one broke out of her role to become a hero and an agent of change.
ok narrative implications carlos backstory blah blah this bitch lubelle keeps going after my favorite characters. what if i punched her in the mouth. u made michelle nguyen like popular music and that is frankly unacceptable. a fate worse than death. yeah she’s hot and evil but the evil is feeling a little TOO evil rn and michelle is MORE sexy even if she is apparently middle aged that’s never stopped me. fuck u lubelle fr
