South Asians Settling into South Korea- Everything you need to know
After putting it off for months, I finally started a blog to document my experiences and attempts to better my life. This one is everything you need to know about settling into South Korea. I included things I wish someone had told me months ago. Enjoy!
When I first came to Korea for my education, it was extremely hard for me to adjust. The food was different, the climate was different, and I didn’t speak any Korean (I still don’t, mind you) The settling-in process was quite difficult because it seemed like there was such a lack of resources for foreigners when it came to this country. I’m going to outline a few things I learnt along the way…

random Jason Todd hc's:
He has cauliflower ears
He's not necessarily catholic, but Catherine was a bit before she went on her addict espiral so he likes to go to church on her birthday and deathday
One of his ear lobes had to be stitched back together after a spar with Damian went wrong
Stephanie unintentionally got him into skincare so now he has a morning and night routine, he has all the top quality expensive stuff
He uses "women's" body lotion, so he's always smelling like jasmine and almond oil
His hair was very curly growing up, but after his dip in the pit it's more on the wavy side, Talia calls it his placenta perm
All his teeth grew back from zero after the pit so he had to use braces again and is stuck with retainers until his league assigned dentist says otherwise
He attends med school out of spite – gotta get that doctorate before anyone else in the family –, but everyone on his course loves him
Once he went undercover to a gym, spying on a villain and got swarmed by gym bros asking his workout routine, what he did for bulking and for his Instagram
Did modeling for one of his college friends as a favor once and people from the fashion department are bitter because he won't model again
Wanted long hair, but Dick has a mullet, Tim's hair is on the longer side, Damian's hair is long but spiked – and Duke's locs were getting pretty long too, so he asked for a shorter haircut and got hit with the kdrama CEO haircut, carries around a tiny straightener to style it everyday, otherwise it looks weird
Has people stationed in every part of Gotham, from the working girls, drug trade, schools, government workers, the gcpd, every major company, kids also pass along messages like a big game of telephone
All of his lieutenants have a name related to red someway: Ruby, Valentine, Brick, Rusty, Sangria, Blaze
He's his own right hand man, Blaze, people are more open to him as Blaze and are mostly likely to spill or tell things to him they wouldn't dare to tell Red Hood so he uses it to keep his gang "clean"
Sangria is completely enamoured by Red Hood, but would throw a shoe at Blaze's face without thinking twice, Jason finds it funny
He was on the book club, theater, MUN and the choir during his time at Gotham prep , he was training to join the baseball team too, before shit hit the fan
Uses the British version of words/speaks with an accent constantly, since Alfred was the one who tutored him on stuff from the school years he missed
Talia sent him to a korean martial master and he had to learn how to do aegyo to survive, he sometimes will forget that he's a very large man and act/speak cutely whenever he's in the vicinity of an ahjumma, they usually find him adorable
#jason todd#dc comics#red hood#batfam#crime boss jason todd#he has the whole 'be mine' song memorized and it causes him so much mental anguish he would prefer being blow up by the joker again#is it noticeable that im a foreigner in korea by my dread over foing aegyo?#doing**#mom talia is everything to me#let me be

it's important to watch shitty foreign movies, i'm so serious about this. when you only ever watch foreign movies if they make it to the oscars or if they're being talked about online, you have a distorted perception of what they're actually like. they're not prestigious, elitist, inaccessible, or hard to watch. they're just in a different language
#i'm not even talking about how every english language movie is technically foreign to me#there's nothing like watching a shitty german comedy or a mid asian action film to make me feel like we're all the same#i just got an ig reel in my feed with 20 international films recs and the comments were horrendous#some people were really saying putting 'the handmaiden' and 'i saw the devil' for korea instead of 'oldboy' was elitist and dkfnbdbskdbg#shut up about oldboy it's been 20 years watch more mvoies

I love the peace and anonymity Tumblr gives in general, but by God i really need PPL to respond to this and share their opinion
For social context, I'm a 17 yr old in school. The thing that gets me is how little ppl care about the news(putting it lightly). And i totally get it, it's not lyk we can actually change anything at all in this world (at least rn), so ur opinion doesn't really hv an impact at all. But also, I hv no one to discuss stuff with. U can't talk about the fact that there's a literal genocide going on without boring ppl (tf even). Not in the sense of making tht ur whole personality, but even mentioning it vil give the impression tht ur being too political or serious or smthng. It's not lyk i ve lost friends over this, but it's just tht I hv friends i love but can't talk to about things like this. It's like this with world politics and history in general, no one really cares at all. I m not asking for ppl to be into history, thts a personal interest, but they're not even aware of the basic reasons of y things r happening the way they r in the world today.
And this seriously bothers me. But given tht I hv no one else in my life who cares about this stuff (parents, sibling, friends, classmates), I'm starting to wonder if I'm the one overreacting here. No one ever even mentions it (like EVER), and if I do they're completely uninformed and unbothered with it. Wht are ur thoughts?
#world news#world politics#ukraine#ukraine war#gaza genocide#gaza#palestinian genocide#israel#russo ukrainian war#tagging only these coz those r wht ppl vil be aware of#i doubt any other conflicts r well known enough to hv popular tags#lebanon#iran#israel hamas war#hamas#hezbollah#houthis#russia#north korea#middle east#us foreign policy

Dave Lawler and Ivana Saric at Axios:
Some of America's closest allies are melting down politically and sputtering economically, even before President-elect Trump takes office promising tariffs and unpredictability. The big picture: South Korea under martial law, warnings of economic crisis in Germany, an unprecedented government collapse in France — and that was just last week.
Most of the world's leading democracies are struggling with significantly slower economic growth and persistently higher inflation than the U.S.
Those economic struggles are reverberating politically. Remarkably, the German and French governments crumbled within a single month. Ruling parties also got walloped in parliamentary elections this year in the U.K., Japan and South Korea.
Breaking it down: President Biden's 37% approval rating looks stratospheric compared to some of his peers, many of whom are unlikely to last much longer.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol survived one impeachment vote Sarurafter his strange and shocking declaration of martial law, but the saga is far from over.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is unlikely to survive snap elections in February.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government is running on fumes ahead of elections next year.
Enter, Trump.
After years of hand-wringing around the world about his potential return — the lack of commitment to NATO and Ukraine, sweeping tariff threats — he's now hardly the biggest challenge some key allies face.
Still, his return could exacerbate the existing crises.
If Trump follows through on his promise to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, it could push all three North American trading partners close to — or even into — recession, a new analysis from Oxford Economics found.
The European Union would also struggle to absorb additional tariffs, given the already sluggish growth in its economic powerhouses, France and Germany.
With the election of Donald Trump as the “President” of the USA again, many of the US’s allies are in trouble, such as Germany, South Korea, Canada, and France.

finishing summaries of 2 Korean articles is a goal for today. it’s a homework for our political translation course. writing summaries is time-consuming as you need to comprehend the text in Korean, which is difficult. such kind of articles are full of new words we’re supposed to learn by heart.
so, there’s pattern that works for me:
1. finding new words and their definition
2. translation of the paragraphs, one by one
3. highlighting the main ideas in each paragraph and quotes that can’t be omitted
4. putting all the highlighted parts together, using necessary grammar
boom, you’re cool because you have done the assignment and practiced translating🤝🏻

i feel like people often forget that we, the viewers, know about everything but the characters have limited information?
the hospital only knows the (yes, doting<3) husband of a patient was arrested by the interpol in the hospital, literally dragged away screaming (in korean, we have subtitle they don't), and that some other guy showed up claiming to know her
this is a high risk patient, subject of an experimental treatment, she has no family in the country, they probably have no way to contact the hongs
eun seong plays the worried (boy?)friend, he is korean, he has some photos to prove they know each other, he was just so scared when hae in traveled with her (ex?)husband who was accused of murder, he just had to help her
i mean, i don't know about you all, but i don't know what was the latest scandal in corporate korea and i'm guessing the average german hospital staff doesn't either but even if they searched they'd find the news accusing hyun woo of murder and yeah, about eun seong threatening them but i feel like one outweighs the other in this situation. plus, with her case, hae in wasn't in her best mentally so from an outside point of view (and with some sweet words from eun seong) it could've looked like she had been manipulated into saying those things about eun seong
see, i'm not defending eun seong, i despise him too, but just because he is stupid for the way he is still trying to win hae in even after she said no so many times (and how much i've enjoyed each one of them), doesn't mean he isn't smart about other things and that the plot is horrible
#some things are a reach in this show for sure and that's when the drama excuse can be used but i feel this was not one of them#if it was all in korea then yeah#but because i'ts in germany...........#so many complicated things are added in a foreign setting#if anything i've been screaming for so many episodes that hae in shouldn't be alone EVER#and for this her in laws could've gone with them? maybe just the mom?#and that's when i'd use the drama excuse#bc it'd been too convoluted to have her there for eun seong to deal with too#this way it was cleaner#queen of tears

Japan shaves just about everything. He doesn't think more hair=more manly. He infact has a whole different idea of what is manly compared to western countries or most countries in general. He also likes flowers and floral patterns.
everything?!
#ask#anon#hetalia#hws japan#sorry anon! live your truth but i can’t see it 😅 i know you probably meant like… his face/body but#like i agree he wouldn’t think more hair = more manly but… honestly#I don’t really see him deviating much from japanese masculinity. personally#east asian men don’t really shave their whole bod tbh (thats MENA men - wrong orient)#like i think foreigners get the wrong impression because we’re kind of less hair-ful in general than a lot of ppl. particularily white ppl#but its not really done… if anything japan is the most likely to leave facial hair haha considering how its more acceptable in japan#than in china or korea#of course#my view of japan is biased as a fellow easian#I was a little wary to depict the full extent of your ask (sorry anon) and thats bc#of how easian masculinity in general is problematized and fetishized in the west?#like the idea of ~smooth japan kind of speaks to the whole wawah hairless babyface femme easians~~ trope that is so common#and it brings me pause when it comes to japan because tbh japan is probably the east asian country with masculinity that is#historically speaking#the most ‘coherant’ to the west#<- again Im speaking as another easian so i recognize my bias but#anyways sorry about that! ik this likely isnt what u were expecting 🙇♂️

The desire to go rewatch for N time Love for Love's Sake in cinema - versus knowing I have to ride there, spend money and I'll be there alone on a weekday. Ouch... At least if only they had some sort of event or giveaway or stage greeting with actors - I would go there immediately 🥲
Watching BL in a cinema with all fans would be so much fun but I can't go on weekend and I don't really have bl-watching friends currently in Korea :(
#on the opposite side what a privileged life#i am thinking about going there or not while i just arrived from a country where all lgbt content was banned#and announced extremistic lmao#i am very grateful to experience this and i want to support the actors if they get a cut (something tells me they don't tho)#but still i am introvert foreigner oops#korea#kbl#korean bl#love for love's sake

I can't believe that I have to do this right now. But I have no other option. I don't feel safe.
I'm a foreign student living in Korea. I've been here for more than six months. I have been living in a goshiwon for almost 4 months. One day ago, the manager of the goshiwon I'm living in, physically assaulted me. I was so uncomfortable and scared. I'm here so far away from my family living alone and this woman assaults me for absolutely no reason? Not just me, she assaulted a few more of my juniors, all from my country, Bangladesh. I didn't expect Korea to be like this tbh. I didn't expect them to be so disgustingly racist to any other race who are not white.
Even when we all called the police, the senior officer laughed it off. Saying she was just telling us to go in our room by pushing us. You think pushing us will leave a red mark on my brown skin?? Sigh I'm so lost but I felt like I had to put it over here. I wanted to warn all the people who romanticize Korea. Guys it's not as it looks like. Korea is disgustingly racist. You'll realize it with every breath that you take outside. You'll realize it with every stare you get.
I came to this country with such high hopes. I can't believe the way she attacked us and then pretended it was nothing. I can't believe even the police didn't care enough. We had to call them twice because they left without informing us when we were recording proof from the CCTV footage. Then we called them again and showed them the proof AGAIN. Because the first time he saw the footage, in his eyes she was just 'gently' pushing us to go to our rooms. In his eyes she didn't 'exactly' harm us because we had no visible injuries. Lol and here I came to Korea knowing their police are very good they never let victims down. And when I saw the way he looked at us like we were joking, I lost all hopes.
To all the people out there who want to visit Korea, especially those who aren't white, believe me Koreans are worse than you think. Thank you Korea, for showing your true colors so early. I hope nobody ever goes through trauma like this. I hope nobody ever has to feel so scared, alone and traumatized with nobody to share their pain with. May you get the best of life.
