End of June
Raspberry season purple lips, purple fingers such good raspberries
{ID: a white, octagonal bowl with black raspberries and a couple of purple-stained fingers.]
There is also an abundance of salad, but it doesn’t inspire the same poetic urges. The celery plants I started indoors from supermarket leftovers are both nice, healthy plants, now. The celery is much stronger flavored than celery from the market; it is also a deeper green color because I’m not piling mulch up around the stalks to blanch them. I’m thinking of trying to dry thin slices to use in soup in the winter. The kale is getting quite big and my daughter and I chopped and froze two gallon-sized baggies of it yesterday. The peas are just starting, a bit later than usual. Three of the four of us love eating them raw, so it can be hard to get enough actually into the house to cook them.
[ID a kitchen table and cutting board with a selection of celery, pea pods, and lettuce. The metal bowl at the side has chopped lettuce and a little kale in it.]
Dishearteningly, we FINALLY got an appliance-fixing guy here last Friday. He said he could fix the clothesdryer, but that the dishwasher was a total loss. Sooooo we need to replace that. Not really looking forward to another big bill in this year that has had so many troubles already. It’s Monday morning, and Appliance Guy is putting the replacement parts into the dryer. Cross fingers.

Women Getting Outdoors This event has been in the works for quite a while now. We’re offering a camping weekend for women to learn the basics of camping and improve camping skills. Become more familiar with camping equipment, setting up a campsite, making a good fire, putting up a tent, cooking outside. Discover more ways to experience the outdoors, forage for food, identify a few edible and medicinal plants, start a small container garden, fish in our local waters and cook what you catch. If this sounds like something you would like to do please #savethedate June 11-13. Have conversations with us around our campfires where you will enjoy a meal, hear stories and sing songs. Most of the food will be harvested from the farm. There will be much more information posted about this upcoming event. Message us if you have questions. #women #womenoutdoors #womencamping #outdooradventures #enjoynature #campervanlife #tenting #foragefood #cookoutdoors #campfire #campfirecooking #travel #travelblogger #fishing #crabbing #cookwhatyoucatch #gardenonthego #containergardening #hammocks #girlsoutdoors #girlscouts #girlguides #campfiregirls #campinggear #hipcamp #getoutside #getoutdoors #veteranfamily (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNc-8pJhfq6/?igshid=6vyud03gcib4

Inspired by the lovely @saigemj, who recently posted many beautiful bakes topped with edible flowers, I had a vision of some kind of lemon curd and vanilla confection topped with the lovely (and edible, AND delicious) evening primrose, blooming wild all around where I live right now. Since I didn’t have the bandwidth for all that, I worked with what I had on hand, including cashews and limes and coconut milk and a surplus of jam made from the black raspberries that grow wild around the fringe of my yard. The crust is black sesame, flax, dates, and walnuts. (PS. the leaves are yarrow) . . . #vegandessert #eveningprimrose #blackraspberry #healthydessert #inspiredinthekitchen #vegankitchen #funinthekitchen #edibleflowers #inspiredbynature #yarrow #blacksesame #vegancheesecake #rawcheesecake #wildedibles #forage #foragefood #homesteadlife #creativekitchen #treats #easyfancy #rawchasew #tinycake #cakedecorating #simplepleasures #nottoosweet #nobakedessert #cteatsin #cteats https://www.instagram.com/p/CE-xspQHE8_/?igshid=g89nio7r3iqn

[image descr: three pint jars of yellowish green jam sitting on a towel.]
Sweet, sour, aSseRtive lime/pineapple jam. It’s yummy, I swear.
It’s also been a really good year for wild garlic. Some foragers call this plant ‘wild onion’, and to each their own, but it has the structure, smell, and taste of garlic to me. My mother always used it just like ordinary garden garlic, measure for measure. The cloves are pretty small, but it’s fun to roam around the farm and pull up a handful of it here and there. Free garlic! How many cloves do I want?!

Surprising crabapples
A tree in our neighborhood bore a big crop of large, deeply red crabapples this year. My daughter and I went and grabbed a bucketful last evening (the neighbor is friendly) and had a crabapple project today.
First off we put together a pickling brine similar to what you’d use to make spiced apples: vinegar, water, sugar, cinnamon, and clove. We also dumped in some orange zest just because. The house started to smell oddly of pickled Christmas.
Those little guys went into a jar. The rest of them were chopped in half - surprise, they’re pink inside!! I knew there were a few, rare varieties of apple with pink flesh, but I’d never heard of a crabapple like that. Live and learn. We covered them with water in a large pot and simmered them until they were soft. Then were drained off and saved the liquid (it’s bright pink! We’re going to make some amazing pink lemonade!) and ran the cooked apples through a food mill. That separated the skins and seeds from the fruit. The resulting magenta ‘crabapplesauce’ will get added in small quantities to regular applesauce or pear sauce to make it tastier. And pink.
Have I mentioned how PINK these things are inside? Because I am freakin amazed at them. And they don’t taste half bad!
Net result; two jars of pickled spiced crabapples, some liquid to add to other drinks, and crabapplesauce.
Now it’s time to start making tomato sauce. And doing something about the big bag of pears. Jeez, harvest time is busy.

Oh What a Night!!! Our Gullah Campfire Supper with Stories and Songs was last night and it was a wonderful Farm to Table celebration of Women’s History Month. We served a few dishes that would have been common during the Reconstruction Era, pork stew with carrots and potatoes, fresh local Whiting fish, rice, cabbage and collards from the farm cooked together, a fresh salad with salad greens from our field. For dessert we served gingerbread with lemon hard sauce and our beverage was green tea. We also had a bit of pan fried flat bread. The collards and cabbage recipe was from a cookbook of Sallie Ann Robinson, Gullah chef from Daufuskie Island. The gingerbread was in honor of #harriettubman who made #gingerbeard and #pies to sell in order to support herself while serving as a#spy with the #unionarmy here in #beaufortsc it was also in honor of my paternal grandmother of #gullah heritage who made gingerbread often and for special occasions she served it with #lemon hard sauce. The flat bread was in commemoration of the #unleavenedbread eaten by the #childrenofisrael on the night they observed #passover and last night was Passover. Ou salad includes some #bitterherbs also in honor of Passover. One of our guests, Sará Reynolds Green and her husband @gullahchefbillgreen brought the portions of a #sederplate and shared about the meaning of the foods on the plate. One way you can read about Passover is in the Old Teatament of the Bible, Exodus 12:1-51 Our guests @delatourmonique shared about her #fabricdesigner pieces, #naruraldyes and #indigo . She will be with us in June for a special event for women to learn basic #outdoorskills #foragefood #camping #fishing and #cookingoutdoors Sará also shared how she and Bill met and how they developed their farm, the cooking and history training for kids/youth, feeding the community and helping with #landsecurity Tony added outdoor lighting and tiki torches to the setting and it was beautiful. Our kids worked very hard to help us get this together, we greatly appreciate their support. Our next campfire supper will be in May, announcements will be posted very soon. #bible #farmtotable #fieldtofork #gullahgeechee (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM-d0_SBRsU/?igshid=5739ud6aek9u
