Summer reading! I thoroughly this book The Librarian Spy by Madeline Martin. The well developed characters, historical references, true to life stories, technical details and descriptions of locations were all superb. If you like World War 2 stories then this one should really be on your list. Btw, the narration is excellent!
“From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Bookshop in London comes a moving new novel inspired by the true history of America's library spies of World War II.
Ava thought her job as a librarian at the Library of Congress would mean a quiet, routine existence. But an unexpected offer from the US military has brought her to Lisbon with a new mission: posing as a librarian while working undercover as a spy gathering intelligence.
Meanwhile, in occupied France, Elaine has begun an apprenticeship at a printing press run by members of the Resistance. It's a job usually reserved for men, but in the war, those rules have been forgotten. Yet she knows that the Nazis are searching for the press and its printer in order to silence them.
As the battle in Europe rages, Ava and Elaine find themselves connecting through coded messages and discovering hope in the face of war.”

The Women’s Camping Weekend commemorates the anniversary of the Combahee Ferry Raid. “On June 2, 1863, Harriet Tubman, under the command of Union Colonel James Montgomery, became the first woman to lead a major military operation in the United States when she and 150 African American Union soldiers rescued more than 700 slaves in the Combahee Ferry Raid during the Civil War.” This weekend event is designed for women to experience nature and outdoor recreation with like-minded ladies in a non-competitive environment. It will also serve as a reminder of the women who served in the Beaufort District during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era to aid the war effort, abolish slavery, support freed and contraband Blacks and as teachers, nurses, laundresses, and cooks. These women include Harriet Tubman abolitionist, conductor of the Underground RailRoad, Union Army Civilian attache’, Dr. Esther Hill Hawks medical doctor, teacher, Rachel C. Mather founder of the Mather School for Negro Girls, Susie Baker King teacher, laundress, nurse, Charlotte Forten Grimke’ teacher, journalist, hospital volunteer, Laura M. Towne and Ellen Murray were founders of the Penn School.
The Women’s Camping Weekend event provides an opportunity for women to become more comfortable in the outdoors, participate in recreational activities, and discover ways to protect and create more natural spaces. Hiking, kayaking and a wildlife field trip are a few of the activities for the weekend.

We’re celebrating the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at Camp Saxton during our January Gullah Campfire Supper with Stories and Songs event. You will hear the reading of the document, see portions of the actual event re-enacted, be introduced to people who attended the event and left journal accounts, and hear songs from the program.
In addition to the program we will serve a farm to table meal featuring items from the original menu plus dishes that are commonly served during a Gullah New Year’s supper. See a replica of a Civil War tent and mess kit. Tony will wear a replica of a Union Army uniform and Belinda will be dressed in women’s period clothing. Hear the emotional response of the Black attendees to the speeches and the receiving of the flags by Colonel Higginson and then passed to “two noble looking black men, as color guard…”Corporal Prince Rivers and Sergeant Robert Sutton. It will be an exciting and educational experience. Tickets are available through our website, link in bio.
Camping is available on the farm through our Hipcamp sites.

Farm Friends, we are sharing more more about how we’re eating what we grow, the concoctions we are making and enjoying straight from the field to the table. In August we had a day celebrating Dr. George Washington Carver as a beekeeper. We harvested honey followed by a Carver inspired meal , of Ground nut chicken and a farm salad with okra, cucumber, onions, and field pea sprouts.
Well we’re using the sprouts in more ways. We were going to make a Mess O’Greens Salad from the Dori Sanders Country Cookbook today and add a few other ingredients to include the pea sprouts I decided to incorporate the salad into a wrap still using the sprouts. This wrap has ham, havarti cheese, a mess of greens just picked, pea sprouts, toasted local pecans, dried cranberries, and tomato with a vidalia onion vinaigrette. Y’all, it’s so delicious. Of course you can use the leafy greens as the wrap and leave out the meat and or the cheese. Either combination would be so good and another way to enjoy what’s growing regularly.
By the way, we spoke with Ms. Dori Sanders and she is doing well. Please consider purchasing her country cookbook to make recipes that are true southern cuisine. The Mess O’Green Salad is just one of many recipes that you can make and enjoy throughout the year. Also, you will find the stories of her family and the Upstate history educational. Ms. Dori is recipient of the 2011 Southern Foodways Alliance Craig Claiborne lifetime achievement award winner and New York Times bestseller author of the novel Clover. @southfoodways

Last Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, after the Grace and prayer of thanksgiving was ended in a unison of “Amen”, my mom reminded everyone that this coming Sunday, today, would have been the 63rd anniversary of her marriage to my father, Rudolph Glover Sr.
Sunday we acknowledged that beautiful union and blessing that together they were to us. Mom retold the story of their meeting on the campus of South Carolina State College now university. God allowed tennis to bring them together . The courts during the time of their time there were across from Earle and Miller Halls and adjacent to the student center. Duke’s Gym was also across the street. My dad hit balls in my moms direction she recounted to get her attention and cause her to look in his direction. Of course she ignored him, so he began to send messages to her by his sister Lillian who knew mom from a class they took together. Eventually the two spoke but Rudy learned Barbara was already engaged, what was he to do? He did not give up, but as a gentleman he graciously pursued her. Before long the engagement was over to the soon to be commissioned ROTC cadet and the romance with Rudy began.
They eloped and later had a beautiful ceremony with family in my grandparents home in Anderson, SC. Rudy and Barbara Glover we thank God for bringing them together and starting a family that includes me and brother Rudolph Reggie Glover as our children. Thanks for being an example of a marriage and parenthood.

New! We're offering Family Bible Camp Weekends on the farm. Did you know, Dr. George Washington Carver was a Bible believing Christian? "He is noted as frequently saying throughout his life that 'faith in Jesus Christ was the only mechanism by which I could effectively pursue and perform the art of science' and 'The Lord has guided me, and without my Savior, I am nothing.'' There are three sessions June 24-26, July 22-24, and a special session for women August 19-21. Our Women's Camping Weekend is a part of our Word Up camp this summer. Mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, aunts and nieces, mentors and mentees. There will be fall sessions announced. Space is limited so reserve your space soon!
Families join us for a time of Bible study about creation and nature on our farm. Dig deep in God’s word, looking at biblical agricultural and farming practices as you explore the farm property, the animals, and the crops growing. Stay on the farm at one of our campsites or commute each day. See our demonstration plots dedicated to the African diaspora and the plots inspired by the teaching of Dr. George Washington Carver. Eat meals prepared in the traditions of the African Diaspora including Gullah food ways.
Each session has a pre-camp day on Thursday for a visit to Penn Center.
Dr. Carver is noted by to have visited Penn School as a guest speak for 'Negro History Week' back in the day. Join us for a tour of the historic campus during the pre-camp sessions. For more information and to register visit our website morninggloryhomestead.com #campingweekend
