theres been some posts re:pet dog management and each remind me of the times ive been written off as hysterical for not wanting to leave dogs that are unfamiliar each other alone unsupervised for long stretches of time. ie when introducing a new dog to the household or when minding someone else's dog and going to work or a long outing. vs setting up simple but adequate pens for each where they're nearby but not within reach of each other. when that is an available option.

Feeling unsafe is not the same as being unsafe and people are unable to distinguish between the two - you always have a right to be safe, but you do not necessarily have the right to always feel safe. This is an underlying theme in a lot of issues, like judging others' kinks, queerness, race, media analysis, and more; what the real heart of the problem is is unfamiliarity, things that people do not know and thus shrink away from in fear or disgust or discomfort. It can be a basic instinct to approach change and unfamiliarity with caution, but it needs to be an intentional act to challenge that fear/world view. It is something that we owe to the people around us, and that we owe to ourselves.

people on tumblr will literally post things like “you have to eat vegetables and expand your palate i dont care if you are a picky eater because of autism (if i can overcome it you can too)” and everybody will reblog it being like “yes this is true for everybody no matter what” and think its okay. like sorry but that wont work for everyone and there is no one size fits all and some people will never be able to eat these things no matter how hard they try. im only allowed by my doctors to eat recreationally and not for nutrition, because my ARFID is so severe that i get my nutrition solely from a specially made formula drink. your suggestions of “try vegetables roasted!” or “try them in soup!” and assurances of “i did it, you can too!” don’t work for those of us with more severe mental illnesses and disabilities. stop tying a person’s worth to their diet and stop assuming everybody has the ability to do what you can.

How the other campers react:

Gale wanted to get in on story time but was kicked out for interrupting the story with too many comments, factoids and “corrections”

Wyll and Karlach also wanted in on story time but kept falling asleep. While Cleff finds Lae’zel’s tone ‘dramatic’ others tend to find it ‘monotonous’.

Shadowheart and Astarion avoid storytime like the plague, only choosing to contribute if they know of a gorier version to ruin the mood.

Weird idea: Des gets dropped in the past, human or not, preferably with Altaïr (so he can be immortal and the problem can be passed on to Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton), and he can speak every single language past and future in the whole world perfectly, EXCEPT any that are linked to Arabic, Italian, or English.

(Linked meaning like, have common origins or descendants or have strong connections in any way that would allow a smart person, like Altaïr, to puzzle out what he’s saying. So like, he can only speak modern Korean, Gbaya languages, ancient Parahã, and those kinds of languages. Things Altaïr could never puzzle out with what he knows. He’d have to start from scratch.)

Cause like, it’s similar to the whole Desmond-just-straight-up-can’t-talk-for-such-and-such-reason, but it’s slightly more interesting. And plus it’d be funny if Desmond isn’t good at learning languages so he can speak all of these, but he has no basis whatsoever to learn Arabic, Italian, or English.

And as anyone who’s tried to learn a very different language will tell you, it’s way more complicated than you’d think.

(My fav would be if he’s even more limited and can only speak in whistle languages. Confusing people even more who haven’t ever even considered that a spoken language could use whistles)

I feel like the main point of this idea is to make Desmond suffer but I'm thinking Desmond wouldn't suffer all that much since we'll bring him to Altaïr who was raised in a time where a lot of different people with different languages mixed together in lands under their Brotherhood’s supervision.

I personally headcanon that Altaïr knows most languages used by the crusaders and the nearby lands as part of his whole ‘I’m an overachiever that would have probably had multiple PhD had I been born later in life” thing going on.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Altaïr would be fluent in all kinds of languages but, speaking from experience as a multilingual who isn’t fluent in all languages I can understand and speak to varying degrees of success, he would know what’s the most important ‘cheat’ he can use:

Context clues.

In this situation, Altaïr would try to understand Desmond’s language and they would start with the basics.

“I am Desmond.”

“You are Altaïr.”

“He is Malik.”

“She is Maria.”

From those three sentences, Altaïr would have a grasp of the words Desmond uses for “I”, “you” and if there is a difference between talking to a third person of differing gender.

And more importantly…

He gets a feel of what is the most common sentence structure.

He would tell Desmond to keep his sentences simple, even tell him to speak it as if he’s speaking to a child.

Altaïr has no shame of asking such a thing because this makes it easier for him to understand Desmond.

So they would start with common grammatical structures and then the most common words they would use or would see around them.

Of course, it’s not like Altaïr would understand all these in a span of a month or three. But he will definitely progress through it and they would have decades together considering how long Altaïr lived.

In this situation, learning Desmond’s language would become more or less common in the Brotherhood. Hell, they might even develop their own language which would be a mix of Desmond’s language and the main language used in Masyaf. Even even mix in a few words here and there from other languages that the Assassins used.

From there on, this fusion of a language would become the unofficial language of the Brotherhood (imagine that scene with the Parisian Council speak in Arabic would change to this language and Arno’s “???” expression because he hears some whistles but, at the same time, he kinda understands some of the words because he remembered his father used to speak the same language) and it’s one of the greatest secret of the Brotherhood.

… and it all started because Altaïr and Desmond liked to talk to one another about the most idiotic thing Abbas had done for the week and to complain about Malik working them to the bone XD

(This does mean that whenever someone speaks to Desmond, they do usually make use of most common and basic sentence structure.)

Speaking of Bruce tricking Dick into using his money I’m re reading nightwing 1996 and I got to the part where he’s struggling to set up utilities because he’s just been using Bruce’s credit his entire teen/adult life. Like of course Bruce wouldn’t give His Boy his own cards there’s rlly no reason for him to need a good credit history when Bruce can just give him everything he asks for.

YESSSS YES YES THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES ANON!!! <333 it's SUCH a fucked detail!! it's so interesting to me that he mentions there that even when he's living with kory, kory was the one managing their household finances¹—like, dick was so used to someone else handling bills and money (i.e. to having no financial independence) that it seems to have just made sense to him for kory to do it too.

i was born in '93 so did not experience this myself, but i grew up hearing a lot from adult women in my life about how normal it was for their husbands and ex-husbands to have controlled the household finances completely in the 70s-80s and into the 90s, and how weird it was for them to get divorced and start dealing with it themselves. legit dick's "i don't exist on paper financially because i have no credit and have never had anything in my name" realization in nw (96) #3 reminds me of that. he's Bruce's Boy <3 and Bruce's Wifey <3

i feel like there's also a line to draw there spiritually to robin & batman (2021) #1 where dick says "that was mine! that was all i had that was just mine!" about his journal:

bruce has given dick a home, an education, belongings, etc. here, but dick's journal and his thoughts/feelings are the only things that are "just mine." because everything else comes from bruce. and dick is so soooo angry at him here because bruce read his journal and used it to make a robin suit for him. which bruce intended as a gift:

but dick takes it as a violation, almost as a theft. because bruce using his journal to give him what he wants is taking away dick's ownership of his thoughts/feelings. it's another example of bruce encroaching on dick's boundaries in an effort to take care of dick. because he doesn't know how to just SAY HE LOVES HIM!!! AND STOP PUTTING HIS PAWS ALL OVER DICK'S LIFE HOWEVER HE CAN <- impossible <- dick will forgive him anyway so it's fine <3

¹ also means that although he can be weirdly traditional about relationships (ex. not wanting anyone to know kory is living with him at the start of titans 99 because they're not dating so it's Not Appropriate) he has no issues around money and gender roles, which is kind of wild in 1999!
