POPPIES. THERES FUCKING POPPIES ON THEIR WEDDING CAKE. IT WAS LITERALLY ALWAYS ABOUT JACKIE. IT WAS NEVER ABOUT EACH OTHER THEIR RELATIONSHIP ITSELF IS A MEMORIAL TO JACKIE. NOT ONLY DOES SHAUNA HOLD ONTO THE DRESS JACKIE LOST HER VIRGINITY IN, BUT SHE MAKES HER A PART OF HER MARRIAGE TOO. JEFF WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE REPLACEMENT. JACKIE HAUNTS THE NARRATIVE ONCE MORE. IF JACKIE GOT TO HAVE A WEDDING DO YOU THINK SHE WOULD HAVE PUT POPPIES ON HER WEDDING CAKE? DO YOU THINK SHAUNA WAS THINKING THIS EXACT THING WHEN PICKING ONE OUT? DO YOU THINK SHAUNA WAS PICTURING HERSELF AS JACKIE, OR PICTURING HERSELF BESIDE JACKIE? AND DO YOU THINK WHEN SHE ATE THE CAKE SHE IMAGINED IT BEING JACKIE? SHE COULD STILL TASTE JACKIE IN HER MOUTH? DID YOU KNOW THIS IS DRIVING ME INSANE

so
shauna has a complicated relationship with rabbits because they remind her of jackie, right?
and shauna is the tame housewife she is at the start of season one because she's trying to be the person jackie was meant to be, yes?
and she kills a rabbit in the cold blood. she cooks and eats it. she eats jackie again. on an insignificant day, she ate a core part of her best friend again.
my point is, this isnt the first time she's done this.
there were poppies on the wedding cake (jackie loved poppies). she ate that cake.
perhaps there were other instances we didn't see. there almost certainly were.
she never moved on, but its more than that. she still actively stayed there, actively ate those things, addicted to consuming the girl who she hated. who she loved.
fuck i love jackieshauna

i mean. through those lenses.. shauna isn't the only one who knows that jackie loves poppies? considering shauna announced that to the entire class pretty loudly? while telling jeff of all people about it? to me "did jackie like poppies or roses" is completely uninteresting and couldn't matter less on its own. the question i'm concerned with is why did shauna say that (thats why most of this post is in my reblog of it not the original post but i digress). if it was the truth indeed then i don't think it mattered that much since she just announced it to everyone. maybe it's in part to make herself seem like someone who knows jackie best (on top of wanting a cover for jeff giving her a note in class) but then again the poppies don't matter or whether jackie liked them. and if it's not the truth then what's the purpose of saying it exactly? making sure next time jeff gives jackie flowers jackie feels disappointed because he doesn't know even the most basic facts about her? do you see where i'm going with this
thinking about jackie's room being covered in roses. roses on the sheets and on the nightstand
Tumblr media
and shauna telling jeff jackie likes poppies. did jackie actually like poppies? did shauna lie to jeff because she didn't want him to get jackie something she actually likes?

alright my friends.
it’s time.
Tumblr media
look! the wall I always take my pictures in front of is blue now! so much has changed. aeons have passed.
Tumblr media
this looks unsettling
Tumblr media
ohhhh this is dry milk powder! I’d know that taste anywhere - I used to love the stuff, and it’s pretty flammable.
hmm. tastes like there’s a bit of salt in this, and definitely some poppy seeds. fascinating.
I was gonna just go right to cooking it but hahaha holy shit this looks so gross now that I've added water to it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at it! it looks like a really scummy pond with dead bugs floating in it!
okay. waiting-four-minutes time
Tumblr media
Jackie why are you squeaking at me. I’m not letting you climb in the dishwasher again
(look at all the claw marks on the woodwork! she's a menace)
hmmm.
Tumblr media
it doesn’t have a strong smell - it smells mostly of noodles with just a hint of garlic and caraway underneath
oh! all the sauce sank to the bottom, but stirring it up there’s definitely some creaminess in the texture of the sauce
Tumblr media
hmm. now that it’s stirred up and there’s steam coming off of it, it smells mostly like hot milk, but specifically the instant kind. unsurprising.
okay, I’ve put this off for long enough.
Tumblr media
oh the noodle texture is particularly slimy. and...huh.
on their own, the noodles taste like nothing. maybe some milk taste, but not much otherwise. but when I get a bite that has lots of seeds in it, I definitely taste them! and some bits of onion, too.
it’s not outright disgusting though, so that’s something
does it taste like an everything bagel? no. it tastes like noodles with caraway, poppy, sesame, onion, and salt.
does the sauce taste like cream cheese? disappointingly, no! it’s got a milky creaminess, but no sour tang to it at all!
weirdly, I feel like if it did have that sourness, it might taste more like an everything bagel.
speaking of...
Tumblr media
it’s time for some science
so the first thing I have is popcorn that’s supposed to be everything-bagel-and-cream-cheese flavored. my sibling gave me this specifically for this experiment, so everyone say thank you to them for enabling me.
Tumblr media
interesting! this doesn’t taste bad. it still doesn’t taste like bagel (and actually hold on...no, the popcorn on its own doesn’t taste like bagel either, just garlic) but I think the flavoring on the popcorn has added some much-needed taste to the noodles, and so it mildly improves it. three stars
next for the cream cheese
Tumblr media
oh, significantly improved! ...or maybe I just love cream cheese. it adds such a nice tangy creaminess to it, and balances out the spices and seeds. four stars.
still tastes nothing like a bagel, though.
and so we try: packaged everything bagel seasoning!
Tumblr media
ah. this was a lateral move. the seasoning on its own tastes good, but when added to the noodles it does nothing but make it a bit more salty. one star.
so now, I have to reveal to you. that I have one final trick. one last thing I can do to attempt to make these noodles taste like an everything bagel.
Tumblr media
behold: an everything bagel
(and it’s a fancy one too! not a pre-packaged one! it’s even got sunflower seeds on it!)
Tumblr media
I’m going to try a couple bites without cream cheese, and then I’m gonna add cream cheese and try that
...
hmm...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
conclusion: this was a waste of a good everything bagel
I liked the cream cheese variation better, simply because I stopped being able to taste the noodles at all. five stars!
so when I started out I said the noodles themselves were not outright disgusting, but I’ve changed my mind. after tasting this really good actual everything bagel, these noodles do disgust me. partially because of their flavor, but more because of their (and Nissin's) moral integrity.
how dare they claim that this is what an everything bagel tastes like. this is an insult to bagels everywhere, and I find it truly offensive.
...anyway I guess I’m gonna go eat the rest of this now, because this is my actual breakfast today.
welp.
oh god. and I still have two more of these cup noodles! I forgot; I bought extras just in case!
wish me luck -_-

What the EAH characters would have as a elemental superpower, according to the EAH community:
Water: Hopper, Duchess, Meeshell
Light: Daring, Alistair, Apple, Farrah, Justine, Blondie
Air: Dexter, Humphrey, Cupid, Holly, Maddie
Fire: Chase, Briar, Ginger, Poppy, Lizzie
Plant: Ashlynn, Cedar, Jillian, Nina, Tiny, Rosabella
Earth: Hunter, Ramona, Bunny
Metal: Sparrow, Darling
Darkness: Courtly, Faybelle, Kitty, Raven, Cerise
Ice: Crystal, Northwind, Jackie
Lightning: Melody
Everyone in the water category? Makes sense!
Everyone in the earth category? Makes sense!
Everyone in the metal category? Makes sense!
Everyone in the ice category? Makes sense!
Everyone in the lightning category? Makes sense!
Now, here’s my bone to pick:
Personally, I think it makes more sense to have Blondie in metal and I’m genuinely surprised that didn’t win, what with her lock-picking abilities.
Fire makes sense to me up until Lizzie (although if we’re putting Darling in metal I feel Chase could be there too). I feel like we’re just associating red with fire, but I had voted lightning for her so I suppose it’s not that different.
You know what peeves me off?? Jillian and Rosabella would NOT have plant powers!!! In the Jack and The Beanstalk story, Jack is a poor boy and their family is desperate for money to feed themselves and upgrade their home. If Jillian had plant powers, there would be no story! No need for the magic beans! No need for the giant beanstalk! The beast in Beauty and The Beast is protecting a flower! Doesn’t want its petals to fall off! Know what they wouldn’t have to worry about if they had plant powers??
And about Courtly? I feel we’ve fallen into ‘give villain characters dark abilities’. She’s a jester! She’s bright and flashy! How does darkness make any sense? /gen
I’m also genuinely curious for peoples reasonings to why they put the characters that are in the air category there. The only one that’s obvious is Cupid. Maddie would’ve made sense in water or plant what with her teas. Dexter and Humphrey would’ve made sense in lightning or metal with their tech abilities. I’m not sure about Holly.
I’d love to hear everyone’s reasonings for what they chose!

just found out poppies symbolize an eternal sleep. in greek mythology, Demeter drinks a poppy flower tea to sleep through the sadness of missing her daughter. they also symbolize rememberence...
look all im saying is poppies being jackie's favourite flower is very symbolic to the fact that she died in her sleep and was never forgotten, completely haunting shauna for 25 years. she also "sleeps" through the horrors of the wilderness.
also also the fact she slept through the plane crash... ITS ALL CONNECTED MFS'n

Akatsuki members as perfumes i own
I couldn't sleep last night because I am haunted by visions that are so very specific to me and my needs. These are all indie company perfumes currently available for purchase or seasonally available. I am a creature of my senses, and therefore I am not bound only with the curse of associating music with characters, but also scents.
Pain: The People You Love Become Ghosts Inside You from Death & Floral
Description: Heavenly musk, lingering funeral flowers, cold scent of vanilla in an empty corridor, handprints on a foggy window
This is a scent known by its fans to invoke deep emotion. It has funeral lillies to a T. The title is the main reason for my choice, though I can imagine him smelling like this. It's the definition of cold and formal, like the corpses he drags to do his bidding.
🥀
Konan: Mnemophilia from Nui Cobalt Designs
Description: Stately gardenia, antique sandalwood, Florentine iris, pearl musk, jasmine absolute, neroli, and liquidambar.
This is a scent which contains notes I have not experienced anywhere else. It is like...you took the idea of a mirror and gave it a smell? It is pristine, classy, and oh so very melancholy. It makes me thoughtful, it reminds me of glass or crystal. Another "cold" scent, similar to Pain's but more of a sister than an imitation of it. Less about death and more about memory, as the name entails.
I also considered Billet Doux from Possets, which is meant to evoke a perfume-stained love letter. Also very clean and classy, but actually brings the impression of paper and ink. Also noticeably a lot sweeter than Mnemophilia! Perhaps more for her when she was young and in love.
📷
Obito: The Emperor of Ice Cream from The Strange South
Description: Limp flowers on a windowsill, strawberry ice cream, tobacco leaves, tonka, and a dribble of young blood.
Saccharine with something to hide. The blood note on its own (i was able to try it) is actually very fruity, like strawberry. I think the visualization of dripping blood and strawberry syrup being the same is wonderful. The tobacco comes through as the scent fades, becoming more mature over time.
👑
Zetsu: A Roll in the Hay from Alkemia
Description: dried hay, fresh green grass, early summer wildflower honey, vanilla grass, vanilla leaf, and wild poppy.
This one really just smells authentically like true to life hay. I can't wear it all the time but it's so, so distinct when I do. It's a scent for when I want to imagine I'm all alone, deep in a field of tall, dried grass. The only thing is that it is probably far too innocent for him. He would not *want* to smell like this.
But I do. Because it's great.
...Okay he'd actually smell like Esprit de la Terre from Alkemia which smells like pine trees, but I don't like pine trees! I'm going to make him suffer and smell like vanilla.
🌾
Hidan: Damned Nightfall from Death & Floral
This scent is fucking purple lmao. The violets are a little powdery, like the visage of something pure, and the rest is DARK. It clings to my skin with those deep resins first and foremost like incense being burned. Despite all the food notes, not one lick of sweetness, frankly not a bit of edibility. This is a badass vibe like a jaguar hunting in the dark. It bites if I put too much on.
Description: the deepest and darkest amber blended with violets, black labdanum, vanilla absolute, espresso absolute, fresh cocoa beans, and honey
There are scents that exist that mean to invoke the smell of blood, but none of them are real enough to suit him. However, the metallic nature of Scythe from Possets is very impressive and real with a suitable name for the Jashinist.
🌒
Kakuzu: JFK and Jackie from Possets
First and foremost, this scent is old school. The leather reminds me of what Kakuzu's skin may be like; I read a fic way back describing his earth grudge causing it to have that kind of texture. Perhaps this is what he'd smell like if you somehow convinced him to give you a hug. You know. Somehow.
Description: A snap of the finest leather, a bit of oakmoss, combined with tabac blonde essence, a whiff of tea, and the warmth of silk.
There are scents that smell like money, but I do not actually like the scent of money. I'm sorry Kakuzu.
Deidara: Morton Salt Girl from Death & Floral
I know salt doesn't smell. I know it doesn't. But this is what salt smells like. If you ever get opportunity to try this, do it. It's so unique. I think this would be a wonderful scent to imagine for his clay; it is so distinctly earthy, and the salty aspect reminds me of smelling playdoh as a kid (and putting it into my mouth).
Description: yellow musk, salt, and rain on concrete.
🧂
Sasori: Forbidden Library from Nui Cobalt
This is what his puppets smell like. It's what they smell like! I do not make the rules! It is deep, it is softly masculine, it is beautifully woody. This is the phantom that haunts the abandoned castle library, who crawls out of the ancient tome in your fingers.
Description: The vanillic scent of aging paper infused with ceremonial incense, venerable bookshelves of black oak and sweet himalayan cedarwood, a hint of mossy stone, and an undercurrent of faded suede.
Bonus points: this is one of the few perfumes I reach for on the weekly. It's so, so pleasant.
📜
Kisame: Two Cups of Tea, a Monsoon, Me and You from Death & Floral
Description: rain on cracked soil, wet creosote, a swelling monsoon, desert cedar, black tea.
I am one of the only people that seem to take this as floral. The storm is there, it is humid and sticky and moist like rain in the summer, but I distinctly get flowers behind it all. I think it suits him. (And it is one of few aquatic scents that don't smell like laundry to me nor like cut grass).
Itachi: Ghostfire from Alkemia
Has the distinct impression of paleness against a night sky, like a star or a will-o-wisp. It's a strange but haunting combo of melting candle wax and melon. There is a sugared and floral version of this scent called Foxfire, which perhaps encapsulates him before everything went downhill.
Description: A luminous attraction of ethereal white ambers. Hauntingly beautiful.
Another Alkemia scent is Burning Roses, which is exactly what it says on the tin but with the unfortunate addition of labdanum, which this iteration of hates my skin chemistry with a passion. Oh, what could have been...

Pictures of Jackie the Jack-in-the-Box from thefnafnews' Instagram.
Interesting that she's a clown with red hair and green eyes, just like Circus Baby! I wouldn't be surprised if she was a predecessor to Baby (I know, Circus Baby's eyes are blue until she gets possessed, but still!).
Also, here are spoilers for The Secret of The Mimic demo, where players at Pax West 2024 got to meet Jackie for the first time (found on Twitter):
Tumblr media
I am both intrigued and a little worried. A toy factory? That screams "Poppy Playtime" vibes to me. I mean, a toy factory makes sense for a jack-in-the-box animatronic, but... I don't know, man.
Poppy Playtime already borrows a lot of elements from FNAF. If The Secret of The Mimic ends up borrowing elements from Poppy Playtime in any capacity... it would be kinda like how Disney's Aladdin and The Thief and the Cobbler kept borrowing ideas from each other throughout their respective development processes. Does anyone understand what I mean by that?
I really hope the new game is nothing like Poppy and stands out entirely as its own thing...

Happy Birthday Scottish artist Jack Vettriano.
Born Jack Hoggan 1951 in St. Andrews, I think many of us will identify with Jack’s upbringing in the industrial seaside town of Methil, in Fife.
The family lived in a spartan miner’s cottage, sharing a bed with his brother and wearing hand-me-down clothes. From the age of 10, his father sent him out delivering papers and milk, cleaning windows and picking potatoes — any job that would earn money, he took half his earning from the youngster.
At 16, like so many in the Fife area he went into the pits, as a mining engineer, he also spent sometime as a bingo caller at the Beachcomber Amusements on Leven Promenade.
For his 21st birthday, his then girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints, from there he taught himself to paint. His first attempts at painting were copies of impressionist paintings such as Poppy Fields by Claude Monet. His early influences also included works displayed in the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery. He moved to Edinburgh in 1987 and adopted the last name of Vettriano, his mother’s maiden name. Jack applied to study Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, but his portfolio was rejected.
A year later he submitted two paintings for sale to the Royal Scottish Academy. He sold both paintings, and galleries began approaching him to sell his work. Vettriano successfully exhibited his work in many cities, including Edinburgh, Hong Kong, London, and New York. Vettriano’s paintings typically sell for between £48,000 and £195,000, and his total income from royalties is £500,000 per year.
The Royal Academy rejected The Singing Butler for its 1992 summer exhibition, but it sold for £744,500 in 2004, and I say good on him, I suspect their refusal was more to do with snobbery than anything else.
Jack went on to create a series of seven paintings in 1996 that commemorated Sir Malcolm Campbell’s land-speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The most expensive painting in this series was Bluebird at Bonneville, which sold for £468,000 in 2007.
It’s not all about pocketing his earnings though, Bethany Christian Trust, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, Quarriers and Teenage Cancer Trust are just a few of the charities to have benefitted from the sale of some of his paintings.
Vettriano collaborated with Sir Jackie Stewart in 2008 to create Tension, Timing, Triumph – Monaco 1971, a triptych that commemorated Stewart’s overall victory of the 1971 Formula One racing season The Weight is Vettriano’s self-portrait, which has been displayed in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery since 2011.
He likes to gamble on horses, but only bets what he can afford to lose, which I think would mean every day!!!
Jack has set up the Vettriano Trust, and plans to leave his money in the trust “to do good work”
His work rarely fails at auction - he points out that a recent oil painting of his sold for £35,000, well above the estimate. Reproductions of the painting remain the best selling art print in the UK.
But while Vettriano is loved, he's also loathed.
His work has been variously described as "brainless erotica", "just colouring in" "mere wallpaper" and "crass male fantasy ". But another artist David Mach says: "If he was a fashion designer Jack would be right up there. It's all just art world snobbery." Just as I said earlier.
Now 70, he still has his demons, and still rails against the establishments which continue to shut him out. But after two postponements and nearly three years of waiting, he recently said he's delighted his exhibition in Kirkcaldy finally opened to the public earlier this year
One of my favourites by Vettriano is “Dr Connolly I Presume” –which Glasgow street artist Rogue One reproduced in a giant mural outside Hootenanny Bar at Dixon Street, but it is danger of being destroyed as there are plans for a new building to go up there.
Meanwhile Fife Council are trying to raise funds for a statue of his Singing Butler,as seen in the third pic, at least he is being recognised there as I still see a lot of snobbery in the art world towards him, at least in Scotland.
You can check out more from this talented Fifer on his own web site below, and while some of his work is described as erotic, it really is very tame, naughty but nice I would say.

Ten Great Cover Songs That Aren't "Hurt" By Johnny Cash
I have a spotify playlist called "Total Coverage" and it's where I put the covers I collect. My parameters are strict but, I feel, fair: the song must be covered by a band that does its own material (so no covers-only bands), and they have to do something more interesting with the source material than slowing it down on piano and/or ukulele. There are over 100 songs on the list by now, and I do go back to add more when I find them, but apropos of nothing but my desire to procrastinate here are ten of my favourites, in no particular order, which are NOT the same old covers you see on every single covers list.
1: "Bittersweet Symphony" Originally by The Verve, covered by The Knocks and Foster the People
This track ended up on my most-listened to list of 2022, because it fucking rules. The original is fine, but there's something about how Foster the People elevates the vocals that just makes it catnip for my ears. It's great.
2: "Rosanna" Originally by Toto, covered by Weezer
I'll never forgive Weezer for what they did to "Africa", also by Toto. That cover sucks balls and I hate it. But equally as appalling is how great their cover of "Rosanna" is; they turned up the grit on the guitars and infuse it with edge and energy that the original simply lacks. Goddammit, Weezer.
3: "Jackie and Wilson" Originally by Hozier, covered by Jazz Morley
The golden rule of Hozier covers done by women is that you cannot, under any circumstances, change the pronouns of the song. Hozier writes about women like a lesbian, and either you respect that or you shouldn't cover his stuff. This version of "Jackie and Wilson" is gorgeous and lush, Jazz Morley's voice is great, and she sings it the way it should be sung: sapphically.
4: "Freedom" Originally by George Michael, covered by Christine and the Queens
As my friend Jill put it, somehow this is chill as hell and goes hard as fuck at the same time. Christine and the Queens needs to do more stuff like this; recontextualizing gender and sexuality is basically their bread and butter.
5: "Flagpole Sitta" Originally by Harvey Danger, covered by Elohim and AWOLNATION
This is the only reason I know the lyrics to this song and it's worth it. It's a very Lana Del Rey approach to the tune, with twinkling piano and sultry vocals, and it works incredibly well.
6: "Higher Love" Originally by Whitney Houston, covered by JR JR
Another one that I've listened to so much that it's crept into my regular rotation. Indie pop boys taking on the greatest voice of the generation might not sound very good, but as an OG hipster I can tell you that this is exactly the sort of bright poppy nonsense we ate the fuck up in 2012.
7: "I Think We're Alone Now" Originally by Tiffany, covered by Billie Joe Armstrong
I think Billie Joe always wanted to be a pop princess girlie, and now that Green Day is in the "whatever the fuck we want" phase of their career, he gets to do great covers like this one. Takes a somewhat dated classic and makes it sound absolutely timeless.
8: "Needle in the Hay" Originally by Elliott Smith, covered by Vanessa Carlton
As someone who had both an Elliott Smith and a Vanessa Carlton phase, this is just good synergy for me. But also, more women need to do covers of Elliott Smith. Let's get a trend going. He deserves to be reinterpreted that way.
9: "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" Originally by ABBA, covered by Zachary Staines
This man really took a disco classic and made it sound like the best Ed Sheeran song that Ed Sheeran could never do. Outstanding.
10: "I Love You Always Forever" Originally by Donna Lewis, covered by Betty Who
I can't believe Betty Who didn't originate this song. It's literally perfect for her. A+, no notes.

Attention-Grabbers and Cacophany
The October sun is setting at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theater, and the amphitheater is buzzing in anticipation. Hordes of young women in synthetic flower crowns and Dr. Martens pack the floor, pushing and shoving towards the stage. As the sun sets, Lana Del Rey gracefully steps out under pink spotlights. The woman I had idolized since my preteen years was no longer just an image on a screen but was now twenty feet in front of me. She looked angelic in her peasant blouse and skinny jeans. I didn’t know how lucky I was to be there— she would go on hiatus after this tour. Soon she swung over the audience on a flowery swing, holding the microphone out to the adulating masses, smiling as we shouted the lyrics to Video Games.

Taylor Swift has been on the lips and cell phone screens of every American for the last year. Recently her jet-setting, carbon-emitting ways brought her 9,000 miles from Tokyo to Las Vegas to support her boyfriend, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce in the Super Bowl. The two were photographed kissing after the Chiefs’ victory. Their intimate moment, surrounded by an army of cameramen, deeply immersed in the crowd, is the 2024 equivalent to Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square. I’m not sure privacy exists anymore.

Deep in the woods, off the Washington coast, the Hoh Rainforest resides inside Olympic National Park. The rain from omnipresent rainstorms trickles down through the Douglas Firs, Western Hemlocks, Sitka Spruces, and Western Red Cedars, like gentle wet sequins, and tickle your nose saturating your clothes. The Hall of Mosses trail isn’t even a mile long, yet its gently inclined mossy loop seems to exist beyond any measures of time and space. Lush canopies and old growth swaddle you into a safe, green embrace, surrounded by undergrowth and banana slugs. The only reminder of the outside world is a plastic placard of Mary Oliver’s When I am Among the Trees staked into the mushy ground. In stillness, on the overgrown forest floor, life buzzes around you in shades of green.

The shooting at the sports bar had everybody shaken up. Every body hit the deck. Let the bodies hit the floor! Drop it like it’s hot! 25 shots fired at 1 AM through the outdoor patio at Jackie’s in Southeast Portland, zero deaths and zero injuries. That should have been the news headline. Is it not snappy enough? Would carnage have made it newsworthy? There was no evidence in the news. Nothing but a Reddit thread asking if any neighbors heard the shots fired. Fifty bodies huddled on the sticky ground, circling the silent DJ booth, debating whether to call their loved ones. But no one died, so it clearly doesn’t matter. Are foliage half walls bulletproof? Where did the security go? Portland isn’t known for its clubbing scene, so why the fuck did I go to the bar?

This year’s Milan Fashion Week was littered with banana peels, candy wrappers, whole eggs, and soda cans on the AVAVAV catwalk. The designer planted haters in the audience—actors armed with artillery loaded with garbage. Models stumbled and fell, slipping and sliding on the trashy runway laid out before them. The designer made a statement on hate and the fashion industry as her runway show descended into filthy chaos. Hateful Instagram comments passively scrolled by on large screens, overwhelming the audience with grimy, hateful text and imagery. The hate was real, but the medieval tomato-throwing was staged. Spectacle and staged anarchy will always be on-trend.

There’s an urban legend in California that it’s a legal offense to pick a wild, California poppy. The rich orange blooms pop sporadically in road medians and sidewalk cracks, teasing and begging to be picked. Pavement, condominiums, parking garages and urban development in the 20th century killed the abundance of orange that once painted hills with a lush brush and covered meadows with a blanket of wild grasses. Californians are more likely to see a poppy on a postcard than dancing in a dense patch. California is a temperamental muse. She’s plagued with earthquakes, fires, droughts, and the mystique of the Santa Ana Winds, but she’s also blessed with wildflower season and superblooms. The long dormant Arroyo Lupines, Canterbury Bells, Desert Primroses, and California Poppies reemerge, carpeting the rolling hills. The wild poppies reenter the scene, welcoming the spring, and tempting kids to pluck their ripe flowerettes.
