As a masc person who ships a lot of MLM myself, i have noticed that sometimes when i see a fanart of my fave mlm ship, one of the more femme one out of the couple gets portraied in a very femmine way, sometimes to a point of no recognition where it straight up almost feels like a gender swap fanart (and its not).

SO, how is this a gross fetishization and queerphobic you ask?

Ive actually seen a lot of people talk about it back in 2020/21 and since then had a few conversations about it with my friends, bc im not the only one who noticed this.

There is this phenomenon of CIS and HETERO girls/women that obsess over gay relationships. They ship mlm characters, maybe desire a "gay bestie" (but not a lesbian one), or even would like to have a bi bf (with a perfrence for women ofc).

I noticed this but didnt know what it was. It wasnt until i heard other people talk about it and talk about some research and studies and so on, that i found out what it all was about.

It is because girls/women in this society and era strive to be seen as equal by their partner, want to be seen as an equal by their partner- emotionaly and physically and so on. And subconciously or conciously they know that they cannot get that from a cishet male partner, so they obsess over the fictive desirable world of a gay male love. (Male bc theyre not queer themselves and fantasizing about a sapphic relationship would be very fruity.)

And while all of that is understandable and valid and actually quite sad, it does not change anything about the fact that these people then go on and invade queer spaces, take away representation, selfproject onto one of the men in the ship to the point where they hyperfeminize him bc they dont actually want to see two men in love, they just crave what the gay couple has.

This is something that I think is handled with varying levels of tact but I find it interesting how often Starkid has their villainous characters framed through being predatory to the female cast, especially when they're teenagers.

The way Max acts towards grace at the beginning, as someone who was perceived as a woman during adolescence it was very familiar and made me very uncomfortable. But Grace is into it and has her own complicated relationship with sexuality. It makes Grace a more interesting and complex character and has them actually explore a woman's sexual desire which media often refuses to do, but kind of comes at the expense of making Max's harassment more justified. But at the end of the day, even with Max's more sympathetic elements, he's still the villain. He's explicitly making the lives of his peers a living hell. Nothing he did was ok. Through that lense it's a case of a bad thing being done to Grace that she has a complicated response to.

Now I haven't seen every show and there's a good number that I don't remember as well because I watched them years ago so there may well be more examples. I just think it's interested that they keep doing this and have kind of mixed feelings about it

The feminine article η which is transliterated here as "i" is pronounced as "ee" and not as "eye"

ɣ is the voiced velar fricative, a ghhhh sound, similar to the German and French rrrrr

ð is the voiced dental fricative, essentially th as in mother, there, this and so on.

Transliterating with ph instead of f for no other reason than in order to help you see the etymology more easily, i.e the words philos (friend) and adelphos (brother) and then together they make the name of the city Philadelphia meaning brotherhood and so on. Another example is the bride which I transliterated as niphi to keep the pronunciation correct. If I had kept it more strict to the written transliteration I should have written nyphe, and then it would be easier to realise it comes from nymphe (nymph). I could have just written “nifi” but that would make etymological realisations even harder. That’s why I kept the “ph” since it sounds just like “f”.

There are no word differences for the relationships with the mother or the father's side of the family.

The words for son and daughter-in-law are essentially the words for groom and bride. So i.e a mother-in-law will say "my groom" or "my bride".

The words for boyfriend and girlfriend that are αγόρι and κορίτσι (technically meaning just boy and girl as in, he is my boy or she is my girl) have some unofficial age restriction and are less used after your 20s. After that age the other words for BF / GF become more common and even more so the words for partner, as they seem more serious and age-irrelevant.

There is also another couple of words for boyfriend / girlfriend slash lover. It's ο γκόμενος / η γκόμενα - o gómenos / i gómena. However, those are slang, street speech, often degrading or even vulgar. Some younger people use them lately for their partners cos they think it makes them cool for some reason but in truth it is cringe as fuck. I mean, I wouldn't like to be introduced like that to somebody lol. So if you are speaking with devotion / respect about a SO, better avoid them.

In Greek there are no words for husband and wife. There is only the word spouse which is common between the genders. However, Greeks very often say "my man" and "my woman".

It is also common for people to use "ο άνθρωπός μου" - "o ánthropós mu" - "my human" as a term for a longterm romantic partner. While it is used among heterosexual partners to stress the devotion and seriousness of the relationship, it has been lately used more and more by LGBT+ people as an all-encompassing term because Greek is heavily gendered. The reason the word for partner can't be used in this case is because σύντροφος might be a common word between the genders, however its article changes depending on the partner's gender. On the contrary, the word άνθρωπος (human being) is masculine regardless if it is used to describe a man or a woman, so it is preferred when the speaker does not want to specify their SO's gender.

TW: Discussions of SA and SH

So I was thinking about those two scenes in Banana Fish (the anime) where SA/SH is presented to the audience as funny. The first with the nurses in the hospital, and the second with the random doctor at the National Institute of Mental Health. Any scenes where SH or SA is depicted as humorous leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (Big Bang Theory is probably the most prominent example of this I can think of). But these scenes came off as particularly off-key, because it's literally Banana Fish. Like, did the writers legitimately forget their own narrative's theme? A good chunk of the show is dedicated to presenting and then repeatedly reinforcing the concept that SA is bad, which it is. So why would the writers of BF, who showed careful, deliberate attention to every other part of the show, put these two scenes in?

Both scenes involve women and/or femininity in some way.

The scene that takes place between the nurses and Ash involves four female characters. These characters have already decided that they will take turns "assisting" Ash, and inform him of this in a way that is distinctly uncomfortable for both Ash and the audience. The important thing to remember in this situation as that the ones doing the harassing are meant to be interpreted as female. With the exclusion of the other scene I mentioned, every other time a character commits SH or SA, they are always male and it is always painted in a light that is meant to be unsettling and disturbing. But here, when the ones doing the harassing are female, it's supposed to be funny. Because women are not seen as capable of sexual predation, it's generally considered okay, entertaining even, to depict scenes like the one above. After all, they're women, what harm can they do?

Immediately after, Ash is shown to be highly uncomfortable. His boundaries have been threatened by people who are not supposed to take advantage of his situation. The nurses' actions obviously cause harm.

Next, the scene with the random doctor. He enters the elevator with Ash (who is pretending to be a female nurse), Max, and Ibe (though he doesn't know Ibe is there). Although he is in the elevator with what he thinks to be two other people, he only pays attention to Ash, specifically. He proceeds to call him "sexy" and gets very much in Ash's personal space. After a brief attempt to keep up the façade, Ash punches him, and calls his actions what they are: SH.

The key detail here is that Ash is presenting himself as a woman. He is wearing a skirt, unnecessarily large fake breasts, and is speaking in a higher, softer voice than normal. Ash (and the writers) are doing their level best to make him come off as feminine at first glance. This scene would not be acceptable otherwise.

It's up for debate what the audience is supposed to take from this scene. Are we supposed to laugh at a female victim of SH, or are we (an audience that the writers probably assumed would be mostly women) supposed to get catharsis from someone who looks female punching a sexual harasser with the "physical strength of a man"? Possibly both? There's no real way to know.

I honestly can't tell if the writers did this intentionally or not. It could be a way of talking about SA perpetrated by and/or against women and how this particular category of SA is viewed differently in society. The scenes do have a very, very different tone from all instances of SA/SH within the show that exclusively involve characters who are intentionally presenting themselves as men. However, it could also be a reflection of the writers' own personal biases and stereotypes. With the attention to detail present in Banana Fish, I think it's likely the former.

For someone who seemed deathly afraid of what her husband could do to humanity Lisa really didn't seem to have any issues with him commiting genocide in the end! Gotta love having to twist characterizations to keep a ship alive!

If you count Strirana (Morga?), then you might as well count Olrox/Mizrak, which is a very nice combination of fanservice (look! two hot men fucking!) and angst (oh nooo Olrox turned his bf but he says he doesn't want to do the same with his new bf because he doesn't care but he clearly does, oh the drama!) :P

Anyway, the straight ships in these show all suck. The gay ships are too busy being gay to go beyond that, but the others are all built on the same dynamic of "sassy woman keeps his stupid/rude man in check and they have cute sassy banters that are supposed to mimic chemistry" - and I would count St. Germain with his woman too if the latter had any sort of personality.

It was cute when Lisa sassed Dracula because, well, he's Dracula, although she really looks bad afterwards with how she neglects her son in favor of her monster of a hubby (not to mention she just comes off as an arrogant ass, since her love for science comes in the form of wanting to be seen as smarter than the peasants below her). Sypha insulting Trevor loses its charm very quickly, even when they're supposed to be cutesy together - and she has no right of calling Trevor rude when she can be even nastier and meaner. Greta appears out of nowhere in the end and she believes she can order and sass Alucard around like a common fanfic OC, not to mention making a tasteless joke out of his experiences in S3. And the "banter" between Lenore and Hector is sick from multiple angles, but on a lighter note is also forced as fuck - they sound OOC, there's no other way of putting it, because the only way they know of showing a man and a woman getting along is shit like this.

When you think about it, the only people genuinely in love really are Striga and Morana, because they were designed to be joined at the hip.

Well, I suppose Annette doesn't really fit the mold. She doesn't sass Richter: she sounds like she genuinely looks down on him and thinks lowly of him, until the writing has to force a "cute" ship tease between them because despite having absolutely nothing in common with game Annette and being a very obvious example of "this character sucks, we'll improve her and make her super cool", she couldn't be her own character, oh no she's still named Annette and therefore she's bound to become Richter's GF :) "I knew you'd be back. I was more concerned than I wanted to be." you are a horrible liar

anyway the only way you can enjoy ships in this show is ignoring canon and forcing the characters into your favorite prepackaged molds, like Trevor being the funny penis man, Sypha being the braincell holder and Alucard being the snarky broody asshole. Or ignoring all the abuse and rape for the sake of kinky hot sex in the case of Lenector :P
