One of the things about substitutions is that they fail to take advantage of the ingredients you *can* use.
I know it's possible to make a vegan vanilla pudding, and that with rice flour vanilla "snap" cookies could be amazing.
I know it's possible to make a vegan creamy drink (and commercial dairy eggnog tends to have guar gum anyway), and one could totally add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to it, with rum or brandy if desired.
If I were a recipe blogger, I'd do my best to say "this recipe does not accept substitutions, but if you already know how to make [thing] you can try it with the additional flavors here."

Save these healthy baking swaps and share with your friends! I wish I knew how to shop for these ingredients years ago, as it would have made my life so much easier.
🌟 VANILLA: Avoid “imitation” vanilla extracts that are made with vanillin, as this is typically sourced from petrochemicals and wood pulp. Choose real vanilla extract, such as Simply Organic brand.
🌟 FOOD COLORING: McCormick and Betty Crocker are artificial dyes made from petroleum (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1). These can disrupt the immune system and are linked to several health issues, including allergies and hyperactivity in children. There are natural coloring kits available made from real food like beets, spirulina, and turmeric, such as the Supernatural brand.
🌟 CINNAMON: Most of the non-organic spices we find on the shelves are treated with chemicals and pesticides before they end up in the bottle. Organic spices aren’t treated with synthetic chemicals and cannot have GMOs, artificial colors, preservatives, and other synthetic anti-caking agents. Try Frontier or Simply Organic brands.
🌟 BAKING POWDER: Most baking powders contain aluminum, which is linked to Alzheimer’s. The popular Clabber Girl brand is also made with GMO ingredients. Look for ones without aluminum - like Rumford or Bob’s Red Mill.

are the dogs in your universe colorblind? and if so has that effected the popularity of different dye colors in any way?
The dogs in my universe see the same spectrum of color humans do. This is one of those seemingly small details that would cause big, dominoing changes in their worldview and culture if I altered it, and I feel like it's just not worth the hassle. Dogs in real life see blue, yellow and muted green fine, but red and orange are completely absent, and my art tends to be more warm toned, with recurring reds and oranges.
#Machete for example would have no reason to wear (expensively dyed) red clothes if no one could see the color red#I wandered off to compare some theoretized dog vision charts#and I think his signature orangish scarlet might show up as something closer to desaturated olive?#which is nice in itself but would not have the same effect#they also have the same diets as humans for this same reason#finding substitutes for every ordinary food that dogs can't eat would be a pain#answered#anonymous#Vaschete lore

Facts about recipe substitutes?
I feel like using a can of soda with cake mix is great if the person of the hour has an egg allergy
Yes, I made this explanatory graphic some time ago:
Please do not do these though, as some will kill you and others will kill Adrien Brody. Which are which may surprise you...

i'm gonna say it. the way some of yall even in seemingly progressive circles get so fucking defensive when veganism gets mentioned or suggested as if it's a personal attack is incredible. obviously i'm excluding the edge cases where it's completely impossible, i.e. due to disability or living in a food desert, but like come on. come on. not everyone who fights tooth and nail against examining their own biases on the topic is in those situations that make any efforts towards veganism impossible. like you don't have to go full vegan immediately like a switch but at least try perhaps
#also inb4 sensory and financial arguments#since going vegan i'm literally paying less for food because you can make so many substitutes from scratch with cheap staples#and meat nowadays is unbelievably expensive anyways#and after being forced for multiple years to eat meat despite having heavy sensory issues that it triggered it's such a relief#to be able to just not eat it#irys.txt

every time I make banana bread I search the internet for my go-to recipe (because I never remember to save it to my bookmarks) and then I find a recipe that looks vaguely familiar and I’m like “aha! yes this one is definitely my go-to recipe” but then halfway through I’m like “hmm I don’t remember this recipe going like this. must have been a different recipe” but I follow it anyway and the banana bread comes out absolutely delicious and I say “wow! this should be my new go-to recipe” but then I forget to save it to my bookmarks and the cycle begins anew
#just katie things#food#katie bakes#I made some substitutions this time anyway#like swapping out half the white sugar for brown sugar#and doing half butter half olive oil because I didn’t have enough butter#I really should just write down my own recipe at this point

y'know I find it funny how one of the things that's framed as part of the dystopian future of Cyberpunk is that the vast majority of food uses synthetic protein and real meat is a rare and expensive luxury.
as if that weren't an infinitely better and more sustainable/environmentally friendly alternative to rampant factory farming. I would like for the future of the food industry to be like that and i am eagerly awaiting it please and thank you

something i didn't expect was that not eating lactose/dairy foods has been helping me loads with my fatigue issues. i actually feel like a person on top of the iron i've been taking for my deficiency LOL
thank you to the spirits involved that helped me with my spell for more energy i performed last week. i didn't expect an impulsive diet change to be what gave me energy, but i'm not complaining hehe
#baffy talks#it's been hard not to eat dairy foods bc i LOVE dairy foods but i'm substituting a lot of things ;w; oat milk is really nice additionally

what really sucks about having both adhd and food allergies is that food tips are never geared towards both.
adhd food advice is like: have a handful of nuts for some protein/a quick snack! can’t. i’m allergic
then allergy friendly recipes are like: here’s an easy recipe that’s just 20 steps! like bitch? you think my adhd ass can handle anything more than 2 steps?
just the hoops and hurdles i have to go through to find food that’s 1. easy to prepare and 2. safe for my allergies is kinda ridiculous
tldr: having food allergies suck and the adhd doesn’t help at all
(though if anyone has adhd and allergy friendly food ideas, please lmk! i’m allergic to peanuts, all tree nuts, all beans/legumes, and peas)
#this is what happens when you have somewhat rare/random food allergies#*sigh*#really love when allergy friendly things are like hey! it’s free of this one allergen! and we substituted it for this other thing#that youre allergic to! so actually you can’t have it!#food allergies#food#actually adhd#adhd#adhd problems#food allergy#peanut allergy#reinanova rambles#food advice

If anyone is looking for a way to volunteer in their community, check with your local food bank/helping hand/etc. The one I volunteer for is desperate for help, and even if you don’t have a ton of time, there are things you can do to help out that don’t take all day.
#volunteering#food bank#community aid#i started as a substitute driver#doing pickups from stores and delivering to the warehouse#and now i do that weekly#and sometimes more often as needed#it’s an hour of my time
