The third prompt of the February art challenge (Tales of Old, a fun challenge surrounding Slavic lore and fairytale) I’m cohosting with the incredible artists: @denise.vandillen @izarra_studio @regretfully_rainey @variety_of_scribbles Is “Sunny Lake” which I thought would be perfect for the Vodyanoy. From Wikipedia: “Vodyanoy is said to appear as a naked old man with a frog-like face, greenish beard, and long hair, with his body covered in algae and muck, usually covered in black fish scales; (…) He has webbed paws instead of hands, a fish's tail, and eyes that burn like red-hot coals. He usually rides along his river on a half-sunken log, making loud splashes. Local drownings are said to be the work of the Vodyanoy. When angered, the vodyanoy breaks dams, washes down water mills, and drowns people and animals.” My Vodyanoy looks more like a young and happy hippie (hoppy? #folktaleweek2020 Day 7 (the last!) Dance. 😈My grandma told me many scary stories. I loved them! This one is my second favorite. It is a long one, so the rest is in the first comment. ✨There lived a woman with two girls. One of them was her daughter (lazy and unpleasant as her mother), the second one was her stepdaughter (sweet and kind, no surprises). The stepmother wanted to get rid of the second one. she sent her for a night to a haunted house in the neighborhood. But against the expectations, the stepdaughter got back another day. not only in one piece but also in rich clothes, with a lot of jewelry and a big chest full of treasures. Her relatives were curious how did it happen? Isn't the house haunted? It is!- the girl confirmed.- When the sun went down, the rooms of the old house turned into chambers, and a very handsome, young cavalier asked me for a dance. But there was something wrong with him. He wanted to dance even though he was limping. (In Polish tale she asked: Kosmo dzieweczka, choć do taneczka!) I told him, I can't dance with him-my clothes are old and full of holes. He only slammed with the whip, and a lot of whimsical, beautiful dresses were around me. At this moment I knew who he was. He insistent to start dancing. But I asked him for earnings, gloves, necklaces, fans, a lot of things but my ideas were gone, and it was only midnight and he was getting nervous. Then I saw a bucket with holes. Go to the river and bring me water, I have to wash my face. Then I'll be ready to dance. He went right away, but when was back, the whole water from the bucket was gone. So he went again and again. Finally, I heard a rooster. After its crow, the cavalier disappeared, like all palace chambers. The house was old and ruined again. But all of his gifts remained. I'm behind on all the work I have planned in at the moment but hey ho! Here's my drawing for week 2 (last week's) #happytravelsartchallenge2020 . . The prompt was 'France', and I've taken us to a French Fairytale. In France rather than the tooth fairy that we have here in the UK, they have a Tooth Mouse! La Petit Souris. Isn't that adoreable... And maybe a little creepy. All the best things are a combination of creepy and cute though, right? . . I'm thinking of saving this drawing for the 'Alternative Market Night' which I'll be a guest trader at in September over on their monthly Facebook market night. Don't you think my little mouse would make cool stickers and greetings cards? . . . “Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.” -Jareth, the Labyrinth The fourth prompt of the February art challenge (Tales of Old, a fun challenge surrounding Slavic lore and fairytale) I’m cohosting with the incredible artists: @izarra_studio @variety_of_scribbles @regretfully_rainey @denise.vandillen Is “Frozen River” which I thought would be perfect for the tale of Morozko. Morozko is Father Frost. The Russian fairy tale surrounding him goes as follows (short as I can retell it): A widower with a daughter married a widow with a daughter of the same age. She asked her new husband to take his daughter out into the woods and leave her there to freeze to death. He did as she asked (simp). Morozko finds the abandoned girl and asks her if she’s cold, she sweetly replies no to be polite. He had planned to kill her but upon seeing her bravery gives her a warm coat and gifts instead. The original woman asks her husband to go out into the woods and fetch his daughter’s body. When he comes back with her alive and lavished with treasures, the woman demands that he take her daughter/his stepdaughter out into the woods so Morozko will bless her too. He takes his stepdaughter out into the woods and leaves her overnight. In the morning her body is found frozen inside of a fine chest. The girl that Morozko had spared goes on to have a very prosperous life. For my version I decided to go to the Disneyeque route and tweak the story a little. For some silly reason I kept thinking ‘what if Father Frost was a ~daddy~’ 🤣 I squarely blame my depiction of Morozko on stupid sexy Cobb Vanth (was watching the Book of Boba Fett while working on this) though as notoninstagrm pointed out he kinda looks like Elsa too 🤣 Oh well. #Folktaleweek2020 Day 4. Solstice ☀️❄️In a Slavic calendar Winter Solstice was a thing. Time before was especially dangerous, full of ghosts and evil spirits. You really had to be careful after dark! And the darkness come very early in December. Luckily since Winter Solstice the light slowly take over the day. Slavic Pagans celebrated it since 6th December with Szczodre Gody (something like Good Years). they were thankful for the present year and had hopes and wishes, tried to tell the fortune for the next one. It is funny how many Pagan traditions still exist under the cover of Chrystian ones. Thankfully! It makes our customs and cultures unique! But for now - beware, darkness is still in charge! For the first prompt, “Sleepy Village”, in the Tales of Old February challenge I’m cohosting with some incredible fellow artists (@izarra_studio @variety_of_scribbles @denise.vandillen @regretfully_rainey) I decided to draw the mysterious Kikimora. From the Wikipedia regarding her: “Kikimora is a legendary creature, a female house spirit in Slavic mythology. (…)When the kikimora inhabits a house, she lives behind the stove or in the cellar, and usually produces noises similar to those made by the mice in order to obtain food. Kikimory (in plural) were the first traditional explanation for sleep paralysis in Russian folklore. (…) It is a common belief that mora enters the room through the keyhole, sits on the chest of the sleepers and tries to strangle them (hence moriti, "to torture", "to bother", "to strangle").” This piece was quite the chore to be truthful, but I’m really happy with how it turned out! But the thing is: there wera a royal couple who loved eachother very much. They expected to be a parents soon. But an while servant replaced a newborn baby with a kitty. The Polish one says that you can find it only during the Midsummer Night, because it blossoms only then. It brings wealth and fortune. The second prompt of the February art challenge (Tales of Old, a fun challenge surrounding Slavic lore and fairytale) I’m cohosting with the incredible artists: @denise.vandillen @izarra_studio @regretfully_rainey @variety_of_scribbles Is “Misty Meadow Fog” which I thought would be perfect for the lovers Morena and Chernobog. Morena (her name has many variations: Marzanna, Moré, Marena, etc) “is a pagan goddess associated with seasonal rites based on the idea of death and rebirth of nature. She is an ancient goddess associated with winter's death, rebirth and dreams.” There is a tradition of creating a doll effigy of Morena out of twigs and drowning it in the river (more info on Wikipedia) “Drowning Morena in water (an element of high importance in season-related folk celebrations) is understood as the goddess' symbolic descent into the underworld, to be reborn with next winter.” Chernobog is a name you may know from pop culture depictions (Disney’s Fantasia, American Gods, The Witcher, countless video games) but there’s surprisingly not a lot of traditional back story to this deity that I could find. And particular description of what he’s supposed to look like so I think my brain latched on to the first portrayal of him I saw (Fantasia)… and then made him pretty 😂 Chernobog, name meaning Black God, “is the god of bad fate worshipped by the Polabian Slavs. He is first mentioned by Helmold in the Chronica Slavorum. The authenticity of the cult of the Chernobog, as well as of the Belobog reproduced by analogy to him, is controversial among scholars. Nevertheless, Chernobog is one of the most popular Slavic gods the world.” In doing my research for this challenge I learned that these two characters are lovers, after Morena moved on from Dazhbog, a god of light and fertility.
