Final Evaluation
This assignment was one of the most helpful ones for me, as I am planning to go into the fashion industry, the magazine research task was particularly helpful to me, as I am considering editorial fashion. In part one I was able to learn the history of magazines, and what I am interested in, Vogue and i-D magazine are my favourite two magazines, I would definitely like to aspire to get my work published either of them. It has also made me want to subscribe to their magazines, so it has opened me up to a new source of photography.
Part two opened me up to how important stylists are in the world of photography, I’ve never fully considered how large of a team is required for a big scale photoshoot and how essential a stylist would be, as I have only thought of makeup stylists. It also helped me to learn about some of my favourite more in-depth, I learned about how they have moved through the industry and how it isn’t always straight forward getting into the industry. It also taught me to be more adventurous with my photography, both Tim Walker and Nick Knight both have unique work, very distinctive from other photographer’s images, I’ve realised I need to make my work stand out like theirs.
Part three taught me the difference that a location can make, I originally planned to do my indoor shoot at Cotehele House, I feel that if I had done my photoshoot there, it would have made a huge difference. I was quite disappointed at how the farm house turned out in my images, they would have been much more successful if I looked further into other locations, but admittedly I feel I left my final shoots too late for me to do anything about this. The location I used for my outdoor shoot was much more successful, Kit Hill Quarry had a range of different areas for me to shoot in, to keep the photos diverse and I feel that the water worked well with my images.
Part four produced some of my favourite images that I have created this year, I was very happy with them, it made me realise how important having a good model is. The model did their own makeup, it was far better than I was expecting it to be and helped to make the shoot what it is. The model also had the exact style I was looking for, she had dark clothes for the mid-key shoot, as I wanted a darker look and then she helped me decide on what colour to go with for my last shoot. It is much easier working with a model who knows what they are doing and especially when they have a good creative input.
I didn’t do masses of editing on my models, for the indoor shoot I removed a few bruises from my models arm, added more shine to their hair and slightly smoothed out their skin. The model had good skin so it made editing very easy, I also brightened up the model’s eyes, the model’s eyes led you into the image and I wanted to enhance that. For the outdoor image I did even less, as it was a male model, I didn’t fuss too much over skin, I just brought the exposure down in the image and added more contrast, not much more was needed than that. For my mid-key shoot I had to fix the background, as it was too light, I made it much darker and evened it out, this worked a lot better with the outfit. I also smoothed out the model’s skin as it had gone quite shiny from the heat and adjusted a crease in her dress that had formed from the angle she was posed in. Editing my final image was very easy, the exposure was correct and the models skin already looked quite smooth, I just made the colours brighter and more contrasting, as I wanted the models hair and outfit to stand out against each other and I also made her makeup more obvious.
The main thing I feel I could have improved in this project was time management, I left everything until the last minute due to personal issues, but I still feel it was irresponsible. My shoots suffered for it as well, even though I am happy with my final images, I feel that there is room for improvement, my indoor shoot could have been shot at a better location if I did more research on possible locations and had better back up locations and even though I love my colour image, I could have looked into using colour gels, I haven’t done much work with them before and at the time couldn’t afford to get them for my shoot, but if I had planned ahead more I could have practiced with them and saved money. Overall I am still happy with this project, I have learned a lot from it and it has been my favourite one so far.

Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2nd, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecicut. She began her career at Rolling Stone in 1970 and she ended up being chief photographer. Then in 1983 she began her role at Vanity Fair. She has several books and various exhibitions around the world. I find her work beautiful, I love how she goes all out on budgets to make images as magical and refined as they can be. Her work is very elegant, it is something I'd love to be able to create if I got into the fashion industry, do that is why I decided to to research her work. One of my favourite series of images from Annie Leibovitz is her fairy tale style shoot, it captured the magic of Disney and brings the characters to life.
Tumblr media
This image has so much energy, is shows the power and high fashion that surrounds Rhihanna, the photographer has really connected with who she is photographing. The black dress contrasts against the background, it is not an outfit you would expect to see in that climate, which makes is more interesting. The dust is surrounding the model, which highlights her in the image.
Tumblr media
The colour theme here is very obvious, the photographer has went for a gold theme, so show luxury and high power, which suits Charlize Theron’s attitude well. The dress is very elegant, it spills around the model and adds more height to her. The image is taken from below, this shows the silhouette of the dress and also puts the model in a place of higher power, representing that she is someone deemed important. The lights in the background look like spotlights, again linking to the fact that she herself is always in the spotlight.

Fashion Week
Fashion week was a week during uni where we had to work in collaboration with 2nd and 3rd years on a brief set by a client. We chose the Holly McGlynn brief which was to create a shoot working off the trend ‘The New Romantics’. This shoot was to be done at Pentillie Castle with a model hired from the university. This shoot taught me the challenges of working in a large group, the group was split into two when it came to the perception of the brief, one half wanted to go for a more elegant castle style shoot and the other half wanted to stick to the style of the brief, which was what I agreed with. The group ended up splitting into two when it came to the actual shoot, as we had two models, but I think this split of ideas was apparent in our final piece. I think we should have all came together and worked on finding a style that fit the brief that everyone agreed on. I did get a lot out of this shoot though, it gave me experience on what a relatively big fashion shoot is like.
