I really dislike the "country music went bad post-9/11" theory that so many non-country listeners spout constantly tbh. it's a little true! but it really oversimplifies how the beer trucks and country girls subgenre evolved.

there's also the snap track pop sound overproduced instrumentals i love my wife and god subgenre which is even more heinous to me.

and both of those come down to a lot of weird behind the scenes stuff going on with music labels in Nashville and with Approved radio music. it's not as though the top 40 country stuff on the radio is the pinnacle of the music in the genre being put out right now.

anyway I even think there is boobs beer country girl music that can be charming and very good music to listen to and it all comes down to good lyricism and something approaching decent instrumentals. it's not wholly the content but the presentation.

Wintersun

A short Shepherds of Haven fic that takes place on Wintersun. Some vague spoilers for Chapter 4 and Blade's 5th day off in the Alpha build. Also there's a reference to this bit of a fic I haven't finished, but it's not necessary to understand what's going on.

"Happy Wintersun," Kyrahlise said as she handed Blade a slim package not much larger than her hand. Neither of them acknowledged the momentary brush of their fingertips.

The gift was neatly wrapped in paper she'd painted with winter berries and small swirls of gold. All tied off with a thin green ribbon salvaged from one of her old dresses. The design was overly flashy for his taste, but she had been too focused on making it pretty and was short on time to repaint something more austere.

Blade raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. "You didn't need to," he said, yet she could've sworn his face softened as his eyes traced the designs on the paper.

Kyrah smiled having anticipated he'd say something along those lines. "I'm aware. But I wanted to and thought you might enjoy it."

He looked up from the gift to meet her eyes. "Did you paint this?" Of course he remembered she painted. While in The Reach he'd fussed at her plenty to not paint outside. He trusted her judgment enough to promote her to Captain after a month, yet the cold was somehow too much. He made absolutely no sense.

"Yes," she said in a light tone.

"It's nice." Did Blade's compliment make her feel happy in a way it probably shouldn't? Yes. But she'd take that to her grave before admitting it to anyone.

"Thank you, though I hope you like what's inside more."

Blade's eyes went back to the present he held delicately. She ignored the strange little feeling in her chest when he untied the ribbon and slipped it into a pocket before carefully unfolding the paper. Underneath was a small book of poetry. "You remembered, thank you."

An unusual wave of nerves washed over Kyrahlise. What if he'd read this collection before and hated it? Well, there was no use worrying about it now that the book was in his hands. "Yes, by one of my favorite contemporary poets. Are you familiar with her work?"

"I'm not."

Her smile was tinted with relief. "I hope you find her poetry to your taste."

There was a upward tilt to his lips as he nodded. Kyrah gathered he was thanking her again, but reading his subtle expressions was like cracking a code.

Not that she needed to decipher anything to understand Blade's kindness. He'd always been considerate and respectful towards her. A sharp contrast to how many Norms treated her after she left the Circle. Like when he'd been livid because of what happened in that damned cave, it had filled her with so much warmth. She'd almost forgotten what it was like to have anyone care about her well-being. It was the catalyst for certain feelings towards him being stirred up. Feelings she accepted existed then politely ignored.

Though a recent incident in his room made her question if Blade was really as indifferent to her as he so often appeared.

When Kyrahlise glanced back up at Blade, his eyes were so gentle as they met hers it brought an instinctive smile to her lips. The first time he looked at her like that was when she learned black was the warmest color of all. The way his gaze slowly traced over her face almost felt like a sweet caress that seemed to stop briefly at her lips. But she was likely imagining things again.

A slight frown passed over his face as his free hand twitched, then clenched against his side. He looked at her another moment, gave a hint of a nod and another quick 'thank you' before turning and walking away. When he was out of earshot she sighed. Maybe one day she'd figure out what was really going on inside that inscrutable head of his.

I looked for these for the past few days! Was it these? This was a freeform, and very VERY messy. I've tried to make it into a list to make it... at least jumpable.

A father’s duty; work and family and protection and–

Post 1 - "Fathers should protect" Images of young John, Kelly, Cas, Jack, child John, Henry, Dean It’s too big. It’s too big for everyone. These expectations. Work, provide stability, provide food/water/shelter, protect, preparation, take on the world, uphold the world. And the legacy of heroism in The Winchester family line of heirs. (Aside/// Sam is a spare. Dean and Jack are heirs. etc etc. ) Plus: Hopelessness. Emptiness. They all feel it. Post 8 (scroll) - "Amara: Starts with Images of Amara When we look at the bomb detonated, we think about the previous detonation, intractably tied up with darkness. AMARA. Post 9 - (scroll) - "TFW reunited... too late?" Starts with Images of Dean freaking out After Jack whispers, “Don’t let me hurt you,” we’re thrown back into a united TFW, rallying themselves and not giving into their specific flavors of Despair. Dean breaks his chains and takes on death.

I made the links because I feel like there were a couple of other anons that focused on these topics, and from what I gather, it's related to the weekend discourse that I, amazingly... totally missed out on.

Fair warning again: This is hard to sift through because I'm chaotic. But there's some stuff in there you might like if you dig.

What would you recommend as the first bl to show someone just starting to watch bls/qls?

This is a really hard question tbh. Cause a lot depends on someone's personal tastes and what type of other shows they have watched before. And it's going to differ between countries. And also my recs are going to be limited to what I've actually seen or are familiar with.

For Thai bls, Bad Buddy is one that gets brought up a lot as a beginner. I also watched pretty early in my ql journey. I think it's a pretty good one for getting an idea of what Thai bls are like stylistically (as well as just being a pretty solid show). Another one I think really sets the tone would be Cherry Magic Thailand. Another solid show that doesn't veer too off the rails, while having a compelling romance, and also engaging stylistically with the genre.

Now if you're dealing with someone who isn't even ready to get a feel for the style of Thai bls, you just need to get them comfortable with the idea of bls in general, then something like I Told Sunset About You or Moonlight Chicken is probably better. Though these shows are very different tonaly so it's going to depend on the person's tastes which to recommend (itsay is more for people who enjoyed the vibes of Call Me By Your Name or other similar style).

For Korean bls, Semantic Error is a classic. It'll set you up good. It's good for beginners too since it's a solid plot that feels like a kbl, but isn't like super deep into the genre if that makes sense, The Eighth Sense is also brought up a lot as a beginner one, especially for folks more accustomed to western cinema. Another good one is Blueming, which has the artsy feel with still a strong kdrama feel.

For Japanese bls, the original Cherry Magic series is good. It definitely has the style and feel of a jdrama and sets up well the humor/fluff side of jbls. Old Fashion Cupcake is another good one for introducing more of the cozy food side of jbls. She Likes to Cook, She Likes to Eat is another well done cozy food jdrama, this time a gl. I think those all set the tone well of what to expect in those type of jbls. Now there's definitely a darker side to genre, but honestly I've still only dipped my toes into that side and it's probably not the best thing to start with someone just getting into the genre as a whole lol.

For Taiwanese bls, honestly See Your Love is like exactly the vibe you can expect from a Taiwanese bl. It'll teach a lot about this niche of the genre and give you a good idea for the style of a lot of the shows, while also landing well in all the most important parts. My Tooth Your Love is another one with a bit less crazy of a plot, but very much ticks the boxes of a Taiwanese bl and is a good watch!

When it comes to Chinese bls, there's so few currently available (hopefully soon that'll change) so it's hard to give recs without just listing every major title in the genre. Another barrier is that if you're not familiar with the wuxia or xianxia genres, you're going to have a pretty steep learning curve in any of those dramas you watch. (And if you're not watching wuxia/xianxia that leaves you with even fewer options). Honestly I don't think any Chinese bl is better suited than the others to give you a taste of the genre. Meet You at the Blossom is shorter and uncensored, but it's also some classic toxic stuff, which I don't know if you want to use as the introduction. The Untamed has a lot of fans independent of the bl fandom, or even just the censored chinese bl fandom, so that could be a good sign that's it's a good entry point, but it's also quite long and again, if you don't know what xianxia is, you're going to be confused a lot. Idk for Chinese bl, if you're new, just pick whichever plot sounds best to you and accept that you're not going to understand everything at first.

Occasionally I see posts talking about Antivans as a collective disliking the Crows and every time it throws me for a loop because. ah yes. The common people of Antiva who we are repeatedly told see the Crows as heroes. The people who see the Crows as heroes to such an extent that Illario feels the need to remind Lucanis that that's not the case anywhere else on the assumption that he's freeing the slaves during the Wigmaker Job as part of that reputation. Those people? Those are the people you think hate the Crows? May I remind people that the governor of Treviso hating the Crows and the citizens of Antiva hating the Crows are two wildly different things.
