Here’s an appropriately spooky (and actually kind of disturbing) October illustration from musician and artist David Mitchell. I listed most of his bands in the caption because a) relative to other bands in the Flying Nun stable, they are not well-known enough, and b) I love them all!

The Chills- Kaleidoscope World ( Creation Records 1985)

If there was ever a band to cherish it is The Chills. Fragile, self- destructive, tempestuous and earthy, drawing from the large landscapes and small town communities of New Zealand to make tumbling, touching songs.

This LP was released in the UK by Creation in 1985 to introduce their world to us, a compilation from their early releases on the indispensable Flying Nun label or as the sleeve reads ‘Eight songs from eight members from eight phases of the Chills’.  These early releases capture Martin Phillipps , the epicentre of the band, at his most focused. Psychedelia with purpose and warmth, bathed in wit and chiming melodies. ‘Rolling Moon’ shimmers and ‘Pink Frost’ shivers with rootsy damp undertones. These are gothic tales with a small ‘g’, the sound of the rural backwater, real, believable and human. Everything is stroked along by Martyn Bull’s sensitive drumming, defining the Chill’s seamless swaying sound. There are perfect moments: the communal whistling coda in ‘Rolling Moon’;  the outback pub sax in ‘Purple girl’; the whole one minute thirty seconds of the joyful ‘Hidden Bay’; and the lyrics – the benefits arrive and life goes on from ‘Doledrums’. From the NZ hit parade to the bigger bucks of Warner Brothers, the album1990’s ‘Submarine Bells’ delivered and the single ‘Heavenly Pop Hit’ scored ironically.

Under the weight of expectation and the shift to grunge propelled angst Martin Phillipps and the Chills hesitated and imploded……to re-emerge and push on in 2013 on FIRE records. Ever restless, ever inventive, forever yearning, this remains timeless music to ‘catch the feelings that you have which aren’t named’ (Phillipps 1985).

We’ve turned the page from Jane Dodd’s August spread to this decidedly starker one by Michael Morley who, like all of the contributors to this calendar, are also musicians affiliated in some way with Flying Nun. If you're familiar with the music of Michael Morley's various projects, you might expect his design contribution to the Flying Nun calendar to look something like this: spare, abstract, strangely compelling.

TIL from the bio on the back: He wrote (and sang) the a-side of the lone 7″ single by The Weeds, a Dunedin supergroup indeed, Robert Scott (The Bats), Shayne Carter (Straitjacket Fits) and Wayne Elsey (Doublehappys), among others.

The other tidbit in that paragraph was more puzzling than illuminating. I am curious as to why he needed to “save Port Chalmers from being turned from a nice little town into a large pile of woodchips on a wharf.” When I was there in 2016 to see The Clean, I learned it was quite a popular cruise port, with tourists helping to fuel the downtown of small retail shops. But I reckon it was quite different 23 years prior.
