Flat Phryne's adventures en route to New Orleans continue! This week, she's in - Phoenix! Created by Illusion Projects and Mattel, Inc., Barbie®: A Cultural Icon Exhibition examines the Barbie brand’s 60+ year history and the doll’s global impact on pop culture. Across six distinct sections, visitors experience more than 250 vintage dolls—including the original Barbie—from the collections of private collector David Porcello and Mattel, life-size fashion designs, exclusive interviews, and narrative sections that consider the style trends, careers, and identities that Barbie has embodied and popularized over the decades.
Phryne’s done that, too! (And now, she’s a time traveler!) Barbie was at the Phoenix Art Museum, and Phryne time traveled to visit. On the way, she passed a T-Rex and some other beings deep in thought. - and ran into several fans along the way!
The major exhibition begins with the Barbie origin story and presents all 22 original ensemble outfits, while subsequent areas consider the influence of the Space Age; the creation of Christie, the first Black doll; the arrival of Ken; and the creation of the Barbie Dreamhouse™. Barbie also appears in the iconic fashions of the 1970s, including Groovy Style, beachwear, and disco-themed designs, while sections on the 1980s and 1990s present a selection of diverse Barbie dolls that represent a range of ethnicities, body types, and careers. The exhibition culminates in the 2000s, spotlighting the continued diversification of characters within the Barbie universe and connecting them to contemporary fashion trends, perspectives, and identities.
Flat Phryne positively adored Phoenix, but time waits for no Adventuress, even a time traveling one, so she had to say her goodbyes.
Where will Flat Phryne turn up next? Why, New Orleans, of course!

Names are often the first thing readers get to know about the character. It's important to create the right impression in terms of ethnicity/personality/age with names!

Morrigan: demon queen

Framed for Murder vs Murder Under the Mistletoe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID 1: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries episode 'Framed For Murder'. Phryne blows on the barrel of her gold pistol having just shot it. She wears a green outfit with a hat and the background is dark. /End ID]
[Image ID 2: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries episode 'Murder Under the Mistletoe'. Phryne and Jack are outside in the snow, trees and a large brown house in the background. Phryne wears a white scarf, a red coat with white fur trim and a white furry hat. Jack wears a brown coat, a blue scarf and a flat cap. Both are looking at something to their right.']
Our first match up is a doozy! Remember we're voting on the following criteria:
Does this plot make any sense at all?
Method of murder(s)
Absurdity of characters' behaviour (main or guest)
Wild historical/cultural/other inaccuracies
Supporting statements:
2x9 - Framed for Murder:
Nominators say: "the suspension of disbelief necessary for this one is a LOT"
Somehow Phryne manages to shoot a strip of film AND the rope of a sandbag with a gun known for its poor accuracy.
Raymond’s movie itself is extra-dramatic and not particularly accurate to Babylon, but hey, that’s show biz
I just completely forgot who was murdering who for what reason…
2x13 - Murder Under the Mistletoe
Nominators say: "This is my favorite episode. 11/10 no complaints"
Who kills a bunch of people to the theme of a well known Christmas carol? The murderer gains +10000000 points for Being That Committed To The Bit.
Goofy sartorial choices: Phryne’s Santa Claus coat, ridiculous jumpers, ridiculous amount of fake fur on Phryne's hat.
A truly ludicrous plan from Nicholas to steal the gold.

❛ how is it you always know what i need, huh? ❜
Orbost - 1939. Snowy River Country in the middle of a summer heatwave was nothing like it's namesake. Seated on a flat boulder by the river's edge, a quaint little picnic blanket underneath the pair of them, River was completely at peace with the world. For a moment, she said nothing, eyes closed, lips curling into a smile as she sunned herself on the dappled patches of light peeking through the treetops high above. She never expected to find the simple life quite so appealing, away from the city, Melbourne's social scene and it's criminal underbelly that she and Phryne were always getting caught up in ... it seemed so far away now. A curious thought crossed her mind, one she had from time to time, but never really felt as wholeheartedly as she did now; the thought she could have an ordinary life and still find it fulfilling. They could move here. Buy a patch of land besides the river, where the ferns hungrily stretched their tendrils to drink from the waters edge and the rain fell hot on a rusted tin roof. Mac could open a practice. She could dabble in an art gallery or join the historic society, something to keep her occupied during the day. In the evening's they'd sit outside under the stars and find it strange that she had ever traversed the space between those little spots of light, when she could have been here with Mac that entire time instead. They could go on living like that forever ... Well, one of them could.
River's eyes flickered open, the moment lost, dismissed as no more than a silly notion. She leaned over and placed a kiss to Mac's cheek. . ❝ Darling, when don't I? ❞ An escape to the countryside. Yes. what a marvellous idea. Too good to make a lifetime of it.

Poor Phryne does not travel well. :(
My preference would be to avoid kitty travel, but over Thanksgiving my flat decided to spring a leak and since we're guessing it'll be at least another week until the flat is realistically habitable again, travel had to commence, so we're all now at Mum's. Delighted to report Phryne is fine now, bless her fluffy cotton socks, but it's always so stressful when your floof is miserable. Next time definitely checking in with the vet about getting something Phryne can take so she isn't so distressed.

Hi. I would really, really love, if you could (and would 😍), coffee smell, foggy mornings and nightgown for Phrack from the September prompts, please. Thank youuu. 💖💖💖💖😍😍😍😍
A three-fer, eh? Challenge accepted! 😂 I hope you enjoy it, friend!
For September Prompts — coffee smell, foggy mornings, and nightgown.
-------
London is much foggier than Melbourne.
It's the first thing he notices when he wakes up in her rented flat for the first time, drapes drawn on the big picture window at the foot of her bed. Foggier and louder. And lonelier, at least, lonelier than he'd expected to wake up when he’d fallen asleep beside her the night before.
He drags himself away from the bed and the window, wrapping himself in a comfortable dressing gown he finds miraculously waiting for him by the door, and follows the smell of coffee to the kitchen.
She greets him there with a smile he would call shy if she was anyone else.
“Morning, Jack. Sleep well?”
“Mmmm,” he confirms.
“Coffee?” she inquires. “Figured we needed something to warm up with this weather.”
He nods and she smiles, busying herself for a moment making him a cup.
“So coffee and not tea?” Jack asks, curious about her morning habits, even as he hopes to someday know them by heart.
“I seemed to recall you preferring coffee in the mornings,” she says over her shoulder by way of explanation. “And, well, I suppose I wanted to give you something that reminded you of home.”
“No preference,” he corrects. “Consider me... admirably versatile. I believe that's a term I've heard used.”
She snorts and hands him a cup, which he accepts gratefully, taking in her full appearance for the first time now that she’s no longer behind the counter. He realizes she’s wearing a nightgown. And not just a nightgown, a... well it’s been a while since Jack woke up with a woman, but he would still call this particular style “conservative.”
It’s odd.
Not that it isn’t lovely — anything on her is lovely — and the cut is good, for all that Jack knows of women’s sleepwear. But somehow it just doesn’t quite... fit.
“Interesting outfit,” he comments causally. “Especially since I happen to know you went to bed in far less.”
She shrugs, picking at an imaginary piece of lint on the sleeve.
“Not my usual style,” she admits, not quite meeting his eye. “But it matched your dressing gown and... maybe I wanted to give you something else that reminded you of home.”
He blinks at the confession before the detective in him puts together the pieces and he realizes, with a feeling of immense love, that despite their unconventional relationship, she was trying, in her own way, to give him a bit of the domestic life he'd once had, the home and hearth he'd once craved.
It was a kind, but wholly unnecessary gesture, for while Jack may have been scared for a time to enter into a relationship with Phryne, he'd never been confused as to what that relationship would look like. And, moreover, while that dream, that life, would always be a warm memory, he found it no longer sat on his shoulders the way it used to.
It no longer fit.
“Well,” he starts, putting down the coffee, “as it happens, Miss Fisher, I find that these days, all I need to feel at home is to wake up next to you.”
The smile that lights up her face is so warm it could clear all the fog in London.
“Ah,” she says in understanding. “So nightgowns optional then?”
“I should hope so,” he replies dryly. “I left all mine back in Australia.”
Phryne laughs and then, without any preamble, lifts the ill-fitting garment overhead and lets it drop behind her unceremoniously on the kitchen floor.
“Come on, Jack. I have a better way to warm us up.”
And, if in their haste, they forget to close the drapes, well… there was almost certainly too much fog for anyone outside to see what she meant anyway.

Flat Phryne has started her journey to Miss Fisher Con 2024! This week, she's in Virginia Beach! Virginia is for lovers, so Flat Phryne feels right at home there. She spent some time at the beach admiring the Neptune statue, before making her way to the Naval Aviation Monument to pay respects to her fellow flyers. Finally, she ended her day with a bite and a cocktail (or two) at local favorite Cactus Jack's.
Where will Flat Phryne turn up next? Stay tuned!

i really like the texture of phryne’s hair? like all the other women- dot, rosie- on the show have that lil 1920s artificial wave ('fingerwave'?) to their hair that makes it look all flat and hay-like- the modern version of it looks better probably bc more hair product is included. meanwhile phryne’s hair has this full body to it which is, like, pret-ty, no wonder jack cups her head when he kisses her he wants to feel dat body
also i really like when phryne sez jack’s whole name, like, ‘jack robinson’ which she does in 212 but she also does it in 112- idky but the use of his name like that (rather than ‘just jack’) always sounds Intimate to me

The fourth and final outfit Miss Fisher wears in "Death on the Vine" (Season 2, Episode 10) is one of her comfortable home ensembles, with a red velvet jacket, textured blouse, classic black pants, and clustered jewel earrings.
This velvet jacket is a deep crimson with patterned red and gold piping in the front and back shoulder seams. It has wide cape sleeves that split at the elbow and hang down into tails with a deep purple lining fabric.
Phryne's matching red blouse is a fantastic textured lace, with open weblike red circles linked together in rows. It has a rolled cowl neckline and is over a dark camisole. She pairs this with her silk faille black pants and comfy black flats.
She accessorizes with several pieces of fabulous jewelry. There's a pair of clustered diamond earrings on long stems, and a large amethyst ring worn on her left hand.

wip wednesday
It is Wednesday, my beans. For real this time!
Some people have already done this and it won’t be Wednesday for anyone soon, buuuuut tagging @korblez, @glamorouspixels, and anyone else who wants to post on wthursday :D
Fic: plane crash Whumptober fic
Rating: T
Current WC: 2,166
Phryne knocks on the [fuselage] of the plane twice, the signal they’ve devised for yes when the wind will whip her words away too quickly for him to hear. He turns back in his seat and scans the land below again, looking for anyplace vaguely flat and near long enough. His eye for it isn't as good as Phryne's, trained over years, but he can spot potentials and four eyes are better than two.
The wind whistles past, cold and sharp, making him glad for the [aviator goggles] he’s had to get used to, even if he has to keep wiping them clear. He stares at forest, jagged rock, and snow.

While 2021 was something of a trash fire IRL, online I’ve had an extraordinary year in fandom. I wrote 10 fics and more than 161,000 words, which is nearly half the words I’ve posted in my whole time on AO3. I found not one but two wonderful new fandoms to be part of. I wrote a fic longer than 50k words. I finished a fic I’d left hanging for two years and had all but given up on. I don’t know how this happened, or if it will happen again, but I’m grateful that I had it, because it’s got me through a lot. Chronicle of my magical year of fandom:
World Enough And Time (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries + Doctor Who | Phrack | T | 51,542 words)
The Doctor Who AU where Phryne is a Time Lady, Dot is from the past, Mac is from the future and Jack is completely out of his depth but still along for the ride (in fact a time travel AU containing several other AUs, including but not restricted to a Shakespeare AU, a Regency AU, a post-apocalyptic Western AU and a fake marriage AU but with aliens). The longest fic I’ve ever written, and the one I’m proudest of this year.
Night Shift (MFMM | Phrack | E | 1,203 words)
The one with the handcuffs and Jack’s desk. My first - and probably only ever - E-rated fic.
we don't print retractions (Hamilton | Angelica Schuyler/John Carter Church | T | 8,304 words)
Angelica Schuyler is going to win a Pulitzer. Right now, though, she has to deal with breaking news hell, her chaotic boss and the untimely return of her unfaithful brother-in-law to the newsroom. The AU where they’re all journalists.
these are trying times (The Mandalorian + Kim's Convenience | G | 2,806 words)
In which a mid-level public servant just wants to enjoy his leave, but is forced to help one of the galaxy's most dangerous bounty hunters find the Jedi who walked off with his child. Carson Teva POV, basically Kim’s Convenience in space.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (MFMM | Phrack | M | 19,349 words)
The modern AU in which Phryne is a secret agent and Jack is her long-suffering handler (she thinks she’s in a James Bond movie, he thinks he’s in a John Le Carré novel, how to balance your career and a weird dating thing).
House Proud (Game Of Thrones | Jon/Daenerys, Jaime/Brienne | T | 29,134 words)
The modern AU in which Jon and Tyrion share a flat in a crumbling London townhouse and a posh cat lady moves in upstairs. I’m especially proud of finishing this because it was on a two-year hiatus and was only salvaged because I watched some K-drama.
if you liked it then you should've put ten rings on it (Shang-Chi + Black Panther | T | 6,673 words)
While sorting out his father's incarceration in Wakanda, Xu Shangqi unexpectedly reconnects with his old college roommate, the villain formerly known as Killmonger.
there's something wild about you, child (MFMM | Phrack | G | 4,685 words)
The fae!AU where it’s Cocaine Blues, but Phryne is a changeling and Jack has the Sight.
The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret (Ted Lasso | Ted/Trent | T | 20,270 words)
In 48 hours, Trent Crimm lands a scoop, implodes his career and makes some drastic life decisions. And then there's the aftermath. And Ted, of course.
they will see us waving from such great heists (Ted Lasso | Ted/Trent | T | 17,659 words | WIP that will finish very soon!)
In which Trent Crimm, Interpol, in Richmond to solve the theft of a Hockney, meets FBI Agent Ted Lasso from America. Heist!AU
I wish you all a better 2022! May your WIPs be finished, your ships prolific and your fandoms full of joy.

Phryne breaks & enters
Tumblr media
I counted no less then 20 cases of break & enter so far and find more each rewatch (although she sometimes technically didn't break anything) ... up to now it's 7 offices/ 3 shops & fashion houses/ a bathhouse/ a flat/ a morgue/ a vineyard/ a radio station/ a convent/ a ship/ a restaurant/ a healthcare station and a box in a circus tent.
What would be the sentence for that? Luckily Phryne has some sway over the local cops, so she is never charged.
Tumblr media
And: it's contagious! Mac (1*, morgue), Dot (4*, shop, flat, offices) and finally even Jack (1*offices, 1* radio station and an additional trespass at a military base...) join her.
(S1E5 raisins and almonds/ S3E3 murder and mozzarella)
