"Beware the Well of Shade, for the shadows run deep through its endless walls and twisting caverns" I've been messing around with this rig on and off for awhile, but I finally finished this little side project making a short scene in the style of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I've never been quite happy with how Starswirl the Bearded looked in the show when he finally appeared but, last year I happened upon a really cool fan design of Starswirl by the user Orin311 that I fell in love with. I decided to make a one view puppet rig this year directly based off their vector art as a surprise, complete with show style lip sync and a full walk cycle. One thing led to another in adding a background, a few illustrator texture brushes, multiple sound effects, re-purposing some old fire animation of mine and suddenly it became a whole completed scene. With such a cool wizard design, the choice for using Gandalf's voice to test the rig with was a no brainier. The background is based on the Well of Shade location in the Season 7 finale of MLP. I had a lot of fun making this and it was great practice for some future personal animation projects I wanna start next year! Credits for the character design and sound effects listed below

A robot girl who was designed around software that's rapidly becoming defunct.

It started with seeing warnings about insecure connections, easily ignored annoyances. But then they started to become more insistent. More troublesome. Sometimes requiring her to go to her settings to dismiss them, sometimes even forcing her to ask Miss for her Admin password to enable obscure permissions. Miss always would, but she hated to have to ask.

Then things started to get worse. Places she'd never had issues with before were suddenly inaccessible. Things she could once do without a thought were now out of reach or dangerous.

And with those places and things she lost the people she'd met there too.

Some stayed in touch, but even if they did, even if they made an effort, she still saw them less than before. Others just sort of drifted away. Their last meetings so unexpected the hadn't even given a proper goodbye.

Her first time going for maintenance after was a real shock. Her usual place where she knew all the people and had even flirted with some of them turned her away unceremoniously. "A danger to their entire network", "Too much of a liability", or just "Sorry" were the only answers she got. The only places that did help treated her more like an oddity or a toy than a person. Talked about her chassis and its quirks right in front of her like she wasn't even there.

Her connections were blinking out fast now. Miss had to set up an emulator even just to let her connect at home, and the artificial nodes were so empty without the chatter of her friends.

Maybe an update would come. An official new version seemed further off by the day, but perhaps some rogue coder or bored enthusiast would find a way. Would find something to let her connect like she used to.

Until then, at least she had Miss.

Do you still use Flash/Animate as your main drawing software? Flash was the program I learned to draw in, and I remember some of your process videos really helped me figure out how to make use of some of its tools. I remember there was a shark mermaid illustration you did, and I really loved how the underwater lighting effects looked in that one.

To this day, I still use this version of Flash from 2008. Newer versions have a quirk where it takes longer to save a document the larger it gets, so CS4 is where I've been for the past 16 years.

There's also this funny bug in it that will sometimes make Graphic symbols draw with the Add blend mode, which is normally exclusive to Movie Clips. This is great for exporting and it's what I did in my kyu-kurarin cover for the chromatic aberration effect.

First PNGtuber puppet rig test using her profile view :D She's got a few mistakes and some stuff to smooth out that I only noticed after I exported the gif, but i'll fix those later. I have so many dinosaur related animations I wanna do with her.

still gets updated as a labor of love even after the creators went on to bigger things

I just think the indie animation crowd could learn a thing or two from Homestar Runner.

(and before you say "BUT THEY HAD A TELLTALE GAME AND ALEX HIRSCH ON" it bears mentioning that Telltale was a much smaller company back then and it made sense as a way of returning the favor, given the Chaps had done tributes to LucasArts games, and Hirsch was just a one-time thing and they didn't make a big deal about it, plus the whole reason Matt got to work on Gravity Falls was because of HSR and not the other way around)
