My first zine woo!! I wanted to make one about the various stories and life experiences of disabled and neurodivergent individuals. As well as touching on the negative aspects that our community still encounters like ableism, discrimination, systematic oppression, and being treated like we are disposable.

Man...I was kinda hesitant to post this ngl

"old" is in quotations because she'll never grow old to him! :)

I saw the immortality prompt and decided to not be normal about it felt like that was way too grand of a topic to cover in just one illustration or even a freaking comic. With time constraints looming over my head, I thought "You know what. Why don't I show you their entire lives together through a series of illustrations from their special place?" :)

Plus I get to practice foliage and painting different times of day!

The A is in light, while the S is more in shadow. Light/Shadow symbolism! :D

Oddly enough this was the simplest one I've done in terms of workflow.

Idk if I'll do the other two days but for now I shall rest. Not to mention help out with a zine! Woo!

Why do you want to make the zine in the first place? Since the Kirby gijinka fandom is rather small and some people are either too shy to share their designs or haven’t considered even making it, I thought making a nice cozy event would be the perfect opportunity to bring the fandom together and even inspire new people to make them!

I know I said "first come first served here but like. Why can't we just. Draw whichever gijinkas we want. Just curious

Firstly, we do want to push people into making new gijinkas, or artworks of characters people usually don’t consider! Secondly, if that were the case then the zine would just be 50% Magolor. With all due respect I don’t find it exciting and I’d rather have more variety.

Will there be limited slots? Or as more people join more characters added for gijinkas.

If you’re talking about slots of the zine itself, we’ve decided 35 participants is good. If you’re talking about character slots, we do have characters planned to put in a list so people can pick, but if someone wants to pick a character that is outside of the list provided we’ll allow it to as long as it’s from Kirby.

Is this whole thing basically like a newspaper?

It’s more akin to, well, a magazine. Each page consists of one artwork/photo/illustration.

Will only certain people get certain characters?

No.

Is there a problem if you’re under 16? Does this make you unable to participate? || I was just curious since I am 16 years of age, would I need to be older to participate?

The team believes working with folks over 16 will make the event run smoothly and be more active :) So yes, you need to be 17 and over to participate.

I wonder if the anime counts in this, but if not that's fine too || Does Gijinkas of like places count? Like i have a Fountain of Dreams Gijinka and I’m like really obsessed with her, but not sure if she would count or not

We’ll count anything that is within Kirby canon, including anime and places.

After the survey time, will you send us a message?

Would cosplay be an acceptable medium for the zine? If so, that may affect some of my choices haha but my current answers are for 2D art ATM!

Yes! You will need to send cosplays you have designed, and since it’ll be rainbow themed you have to have some photography experience, but we’ll be far less strict on the case of cosplays. Please look at the schedule to see if you can make a cosplay in the amount of time given.

Will everyone have one character to draw or can you draw two characters together?

The character you will be assigned is supposed to be the main character within your illustration, but feel free to include any other character as long as it doesn’t take the focus away from the main.

Had to look it up: a professor with a bunch of adoring, young, pretty students was used in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1982). Wonder if that's where Bellisario 'borrowed' it.

Sam's hatred of '70s fashion already. And he apparently doesn't like English Lit?

Al's reaction to Jamie Lee trying to seduce Sam is PRICELESS. No wonder we headcanon him as a voyeur. (And Dean was obviously having a FIELD day.)

"You better watch it, Sam, or you're gonna end up marrying her, too!" with the 'too' emphasized does imply Sam is currently is or was married. Huh.

Daw - Al's look when Sam says "And no one's gonna stop me from taking it - not even you." And they wonder why we ship it?

First mention of Weitzman. That putz. "He's got a Lincoln fixation." - forgot about that. ;-)

"He wants you declared non-compos mentis." - quite a few stories where that happens, I know. (Hell, I've got a WIP where that happens.)

"Oh my God - it IS her." - canon that Al does not like Donna. At least in THIS timeline. ;-)

Huh - "when we first met, she'd just left the Starbright Project." - reads like Sam wasn't involved with Starbright. (Later: how could she know it was you when she doesn't meet you for twelve years?" - that puts their meeting at 1984. I have it as '83 in my Traditions universe - good guess!)

Sam: "I didn't show up for the wedding." I want to say I read a story (or wanted to write a story) where that's the REAL truth. ;-)

"Shove that up your gauge circuit, Ziggy." - has to be one of the most creative computer/non-computer insults I've heard.

"Isn't Jamie Lee in your thoughts night and day?" / "Yeah, except at wrestling practice." - I. Can't. stop. laughing.

"That's mush. I can't talk mush." Oh, you and Al would get along SWIMMINGLY.

Sam lighting a pipe … the hell?

No 'oh boy' in the leap in, but there IS one.

"But you promised to be Lancelot next." / "NEXT?" Meanwhile, Al's checking out all the fun.

"Sam: there's all kinds of kinky stuff in here. There's leather stuff, there's a Roman toga, there's RUBBER stuff in here." / "Oh, my God. SAM: you GOTTA see THIS." I feel much better having Al play with kinky stuff in my 'they're having sex but each thinks the other is less into it than they are' story. ;-)

"He wanted to defend my honor.' / "Uh - define 'honor'." Al Calavicci: I love you.

"But he's so stiff!" Al starts to say something and Sam just holds up a finger to stop him. They work SO WELL together already!

"If some woman stood me up at the altar, it'd be adios amigos. Actually, I wish a couple of them had." - woo hoo: we have multiple wives now.

"Don't give me that sick puppy look." "Stop it." "I'll never scratch you behind the ears again, now stop it." - kinky, Al. Kinky.

I wonder if that's a real math problem on the chalkboard. I was good at math (until Calculus), but it's all been 'deleted from the memory palace'.

Ah - Al being monitored in the Imaging Chamber. (Well, Ziggy is 'scanning my side of the conversation' he says later. Which - no wonder he doesn't like Ziggy.) But Sam can't be seen/heard. That's where I got the idea of having Tina say "You do remember we can overhear what you say in the Imaging Chamber, yes?" in my OSHA Al story.

Oh - Al's already wearing his Annapolis ring in this episode. (What - Bellisaro has a character in the NAVY? Say it ain't SO!)

Al is trying SO HARD to get the point across to Sam about the hieroglyphics sash.

Ooh - Sam does punch back, but no flying noodle kick yet. AND HE HURTS HIS FIST DOING IT! LOL

I forgot how FUNNY this show was.

"You slept with his wife?" / "I would never do anything so unscrupulous as that. Unless it was BARTLETT'S wife." Al Calavicci, I STILL love you.

"You know Tina?" / "Yeah." - goes against the lady Al 'picked up' in the pilot being Tina, unless there are two Tinas. (Or, as I remember some people surmising, Tina and Al were 'playing a game'.)

LOOK AT THE LOOK ON SAM'S FACE AT THE IDEA OF BLACKMAILING WEITZMAN. He's so HAPPY.

"Al, no offense, but this time I'm going to make Ziggy my best man." - huh: thought it was fanon that Al was his best man.

ADR on Al's "if you pull this off, she could marry this other jerk first." - makes me wonder what he ORIGINALLY said.

"You really ARE romantic." - I want to say I read a fanfic where Donna ends up marrying Dr. Bryant because of this.

and first 'kiss with history' with it being the Watergate Hotel

"You seemed pretty pleased with yourself." He sounds so SAD. Oh, AL - my poor BABY.

"The Republicans would love you." - Yay - it's canon that Al's a Democrat!

Final thoughts: for a second episode (well, YOU know what I mean), this is a pretty strong contender. Dean and Scott's chemistry is already through the roof, and it only gets better from here. Their characters are already pretty solid, which is rare in a first season. The plot is ... well, a typical Bellisario plot (Donna just needs a hug to forgive her father? Really?), but for the late '80s isn't bad.

I liked it.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? *Yes,* absolutely! Honestly, comments (and responding to them) are probably one of my favorite parts of actually publishing fic. I get a lot of joy from writing them, but seeing and hearing from other people that liked them too, or share the same headcanons? *chef's kiss*

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Honestly, probably my most recent one, Her Brother's Keeper. I don't typically write "bad ending" fics, so this one was definitely a big step for me haha

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Again, most of the things I write have happy endings, so this is hard 😂

I personally really love it when "the war is over" and they can finally just get married and be CHILL so I'd have to say either "The Things We Agree to Believe are True" or "The Essential Guide to Avian Development."

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not really, thankfully! I've had a couple comments from John Phoenix here and there but I don't take it personally.

9. Do you write smut? Sometimes! I have a bad habit of writing smut that Must Have 10K Words of Prelude First, and while I am trying to "break" that habit, I actually really enjoy a story to go with it!

10. Do you write crossovers? I actually did write one for the Wright Anything Zine a few months ago! Of course, it was DnDads x Ace Attorney, and I... need to publish it lol

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Oh goodness, not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No I haven't! I haven't had much of anything with that much traction though, but it would be cool in the future!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, but I would love to! I was actually talking through it with a friend a while back.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Of course I love Narumitsu, but I don't know if it's my "all time favorite..." I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head!

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Ironically enough, it's also the first Ace Attorney fic I ever wrote! It's a farmer Phoenix AU in which Miles also has amnesia, and over the course of his recovery they of course fall in love (dawwww). I would also love to add more to the Elfworth series! I have. His whole life planned out lol

16. What are your writing strengths? To be honest, I'm not completely sure! I like to think I can come up with original plots or ideas, but I know I still have a lot of work to do.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Sometimes I have some trouble connecting my points or writing "effective" scenes, amongst other things. (dang now these questions are making me want to keep up with this...)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I don't do it too often! Typically if I do include it, I'll either use something that is very common knowledge or provide a translation in the author's notes. Having said that, I've written some unpublished stuff for Avian AU where Phoenix and his mother are talking, and in *that* case I just wrote the dialogue in English with a clarification that they are speaking a different language. I'm always so nervous about getting a translation wrong though lol

19. First fandom you wrote for? Ohh man. Probably My Little Pony or Minecraft to be honest. Don't ask; you'll never see them and they're written in missing notebooks anyway 😂

20. Favourite fic you've ever written? AHH THIS IS SO HARD! I love a lot of my fics just so so much. I absolutely adore Avians and the Elfworth series, just because I love writing AUs and coming up with lore and everything. I also really really enjoy Kindergarten Cop and Great Big Leaps because I love writing little kids and how they act because they make me laugh.

I think overall, though, my most favorite would have to be "The Things We Agree to Believe Are True." It was fun, experimental, and just a really euphoric way to write a new story as I was getting through my senior year. I had a blast with it, and I'm always so thankful that it got so much support, as well!

TLDR: Looked at old work: liked it. Editing trenches: *cries in author.* Put trigger warnings on books, please. TTRPGs: I have a group now. Writing stories with others is sick as. TTRPG recommendations. Beetle Knight was funded fantastically. 

This month I decided to take a short three-day break from the editing mines to go crack open an older WIP that I last looked at about a year ago. I couldn’t stop laughing through the first three chapters and legitimately couldn’t remember what I’d written scene to scene. I got to feel the intrigue as a character picked up a shoebox beneath their bed, and got angry at myself for not telling me what was in it! What a gloriously strange experience it was. I likely won’t spend too much time on this WIP in the coming months, but it’s good to know that when I’m done with my current big novel’s rounds of edits, I’ve got a project that I’m massively excited for waiting in the wings.

Speaking of my current big novel. Let’s look at that word count. Seems pretty similar to last month. I have done SO MUCH EDITING. I’ve realized that right now, my biggest concern is making sure to correct errors, cull old plot points, and generally tighten up dialogue. I feel that I’ve been too focused on culling words and maybe the more important thing is making sure this book fucking SHINES. Besides, while I shop this novel around, I can be happily chugging along on my other WIP, so no wuckas.

I am part of a writer’s group which meets once a month. It is quite a large group with many people who flow in and out. It is a beautiful group and an invaluable fount of knowledge. Every second month we have a discussion topic. This month was talking about the ethics of being an author and how much responsibility we have to our readers in regard to the topics we write about. 

This led to talk of trigger warnings and the suggestion of books having them. (SPOILERS! I think they should have them) There were varying ideas on all sides of the spectrum, but there was one point made that has stuck in my head. Trigger warnings are just like nutrition labels. If you are allergic to nuts you need to know before you buy a product if it contains nuts, right? Trigger warnings are the same. You don’t want to be taking a big bite out of some delicious morsel and then suddenly you feel your throat closing up. Same same. You don’t want to put hours into a book, invest in the characters, only to suddenly have your exact trauma thrust into your eyeballs. You can’t unread it. If you have been honestly triggered before, you understand how it can be hard to stop that spin when it starts. And from an author's standpoint, you don’t want to turn off potential readers also. One scene that may seem insignificant to you, may be terrifying to another. Then they may never pick up your books again, for fear of said thing.  

Speaking of this delightful group, near the end of the meeting a friend was talking to a brand new member about TTRPGs and I just so happened to be carrying CY_BORG with me! We chatted a bit and I enthusiastically suggested I should and would run a one-shot for them, their partner, my friend, and another writing buddy of mine. SO I’VE FINALLY GOT SOME TTRPG FRIENDS TO PLAY WITH! WOO! I am thrilled about the idea of introducing these fine folks to all the strange and interesting TTRPG systems I’ve picked up over the last year.

TTRPGs are such an invaluable resource for storytelling. With a few dice, some rules, and a setting, you and a few friends can end up creating an entire world and a compelling narrative together, even if no one in the group is a writer! Now… if you are writers… well then, something truly incredible can happen. I think authors often think of the writing process as a solitary pastime. Traditionally, it may be, but I think we undersell how satisfying and freeing collaborative storytelling can be. Hell, plenty of fantasy writers started their careers (See Raymond E. Feist) dictating and polishing up their D&D campaigns that they ran with their friends!

And in the spirit of collaboration, I want to recommend some small projects that need your help! I’ll be personally backing these later this month when I’ve secured my own funds.

Budgeon: A digestible mini adventure zine with a VERY old-school feel. The art is all first person a la Combat Heroes, but can be played as a party or solo! It even encourages you to draw your own maps, very similar to how you might have played Stonekeep on DOS. (Big nostalgia for myself) As of posting this, this project needs additional support right now! Go give them some love. The basic zine is only FIVE USD. (And THREE USD for digital~!)

Thirty Horrors: A bestiary designed to be used with Mothership 1E. Let’s be real people, that means it could likely be converted for just about any system with minimal pain. The art is shaping up to be suitably uncomfortable and this project blew the hell up! They’ve reached heaps of stretch goals and it still has half a month to go~

SPEAKING OF BLOWING UP. Holy hell Beetle Knight did well! It ended up earning 22,898 USD out of the required 3,500. WHAT A SHOWING! I absolutely adore seeing small weird projects become more successful than anyone could have imagined. Certainly, it was more than the original creator expected as that final total completely blew past their final stretch goal.

I am taking a break from packing zines and stuff so I want to put forth my head canons about Matthias’ first wife:

Her name is Raven von Vestra, the younger sister of Marques Vestra (Hubert’s dad) and she has the trade mark Vestra black hair and green eyes

Growing up, she wasn’t really close to her family, especially not her brother.

She is a bookworm. She kept herself in any library imaginable so she didn’t have to interact with people since many people didn’t like her.

A lot of men didn’t like her because, you know, the Empires gender norms and she was a lot smarter than them and always felt bad and emasculated so they made fun of her and bullied her.

Women didn’t like her because she wasn’t their version of a traditional noblewoman since she didn’t care for balls, parties, etc., and because she was smart and kept her nose in a book

Raven is a mage and always trying some new spell out or some science experiment. This always made her father and brother mad. She was supposed to be a ‘proper’ girl and should be playing dolls and having tea parties and putting on makeup and to become a ‘proper’ wife.

With that, she was propped up to be one of Ionius von Hresvelg IX’s consorts and to give both of their families children with crests.

She has a bit of a temper and is constantly fighting with people.

She also has low self-esteem problems since she was always in the shadow of her brother and she is always cautious being around people.

She is also a space case and sometimes lives in a fantasy world in her head.

She while she is perceptive in the book sense or in a battle situation, but when it comes to people and her surroundings she is very unaware what’s going on and what people mean.

She always is cautious in what she says because she is known to be blunt and accidentally hurting people’s feelings. 

When Raven first met Matthias, it was hectic. She was trying a new spell and things went haywire and she nearly killed him.

When she visited him in the infirmary, she was talking about the experiment and saying what she did wrong and talking his ear off about it.

He was attracted to that and ever since then he was trying to woo her ever since

Matthias went the extravagant route and tried giving her jewelry, gems, perfumes, etc. but she rebuffed them every time. She rebuffed him a lot.

Then he started giving her books and spell books. But she ended rebuffing most of them since she has either read most of them or have them.

He pushed down his hatred for learning magic, and went to go learn magic spells and help Raven with her science experiments.

Often a way to spend time with him and try to understand Matthias, Raven would try to train with him and learn how to use an axe and lance.

She would often try to do more feminine stuff like cook for him and mend his clothes, but they always failed.

Her father and brother weren’t exactly happy with her falling in love with a Kingdom lord, but she didn’t care. She left house Vestra to marry the love her life, Matthias.

Unsurprisingly, Raven’s favorite type of novels are romance novels. Especially ones that get really steamy.

Her talents are ice skating, dancing, speed reading, and bedazzling.

Raven does have a hobby of collecting different dried flowers and bookmarks.
