I am INCANDESCENTLY angry.

Honestly I think I'm done with all other adults? Saffron's birthday is Saturday and her good friend invited her to a museum, but forgot to ask his mom first. His mom I guess went on a RANT about how overexcited and loud Saffron was the last time they were out together, held it against her instead of saying anything at the time, and thinks Saffron needs to 'learn how to be respectful' before she can come out with them again. She's also pissed because the last time she was over at their house she didn't put her plate away.

Listen, BITCH, ten years old is really fucking young. I know my daughter, she probably didn't think it was her place to go into someone else's kitchen and put a plate down without knowing whether she was allowed to. What you're meant to do, instead of HOLDING THINGS INSIDE AND BEING RESENTFUL AGAINST A CHILD, is to tell them gently how you expect them to behave. I know for a fact that Saffron is just... loud when she's happy. She's loud when she feels safe. She just needs a reminder that she's loud and she apologizes and does her best to stop. This woman is angry at my child for being happy.

Ten is really young, y'all. If you hold your anger against a child for not magically knowing your expectations, you are doing it wrong. My daughter is no longer allowed to be at that person's house or at outings with that person, because yeah, okay, her ten year old friend shouldn't have passed along his mom's verbatim rant against my daughter, and I shouldn't know about it...

But I'm really glad he did.

Because you know what? That was a mistake, but it was meant in good faith. Kid probably never really thought about how telling the truth could be hurtful, and their parent didn't think to hide her contempt. He'll learn that some people are hurt by unkind truths, probably, and I'm sorry about that, but out of the two of them, I think he probably behaved with more maturity than his parent with her vitriolic rant about an excited, eager CHILD.

I am so done with other people. I'm so HURT for her. I'm so sick of the way people hate their way through the world expecting everyone to magically understand their needs and resenting us for not divining them. Honestly I feel like so many times in the past six months I've put myself out there with good faith, and people have done just what this person did, taken my kindness and enthusiasm personally. IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU, people! Sometimes someone just wants to be nice. Sometimes a kid is just loud when they're excited. Fuck you, lady. Never again is my daughter going to spend time in your presence. You are not to be trusted.

This just days after I found out my former best friend got her daughter to send a 'if you're my friend you'll accept Jesus into your heart' message to her friend group chat with my oldest kid. A group chat full of Jewish kids and atheist kids and my daughter who describes herself as 'mildly Christian.'

JUST BE A PERSON, PEOPLE. Mr. Rogers is from our town, you don't remember how to be kind? JUST BE KIND. That kid with the Jesus message actually refused phone calls and messages for a whole day after the group chat asked her kindly to stop. Instead of being mad like I would have? The group of them went over to her house the next day and sat her down and explained what her behavior felt like, why it was not well received, and that they loved her and they hoped she'd understand why they couldn't just do what she asked.

Friend apologized and said she didn't realize the implications of what she'd done. You know why? BECAUSE SHE IS STILL A CHILD. SHE STILL HAS THINGS TO LEARN. This is how we treat someone whose behavior has hurt us. We don't resentfully hold it against them to use as a weapon at the next opportunity

Maybe the reason that monsters can be driven away by symbols of faith, but only wielded by the truly faithful, is that anyone who fully understands the symbols they believe in can use them to defang the monsters that were inside themselves all along; and having done so, they can help others.
