*****WARNING: This is a Finny/Gene slash fanfic. These characters belong to the novel A Separate Peace, by John Knowles.***** Gene's PoV: When I felt my mattress dip down and heard the groan of my cot frame in response to the extra weight, I immediately snapped out of a fairly deep sleep, leaving myself pretty disoriented. As a fleeting idea, I thought maybe the school was being attacked or there was some kind of emergency, but I was a little too groggy to be overly concerned. I saw a pair of familiar emerald eyes when my vision cleared and I let out a small, quiet sigh, knuckling my tired eyes. "What's wrong, Finny?" I asked, sitting up a

ASP Ginny/Finker/Lepny/Brinper/Lene/Genker
((My class has been reading A Separate Peace by John Knowles recently and my friends, being the fangirls that they are, have gotten me onto the guyxguy pairings hinted at so loudly in this book. So, I wrote this. Well, started this. I may or may not finish writing this, although I hopefully will. Btw, it starts out 3rd-person pov then quickly changes to 1st-person. Please leave any tips on how to better my writing!))
Gene knew Finny. Really, he did. If there was anyone he knew, knew better than himself, it was Finny. And yet, he never knew it. Never realized it. Never even noticed the bright signs. Maybe if he had, this wouldn't have happened. Finny wouldn't be looking at him this way and the expression in his eyes wouldn't be so hurt. "Finny, I-"
"Go away."
I tried again. "Phineas-"
"I said, go away! Go away before you hurt me again!"
His words, although not unusual for how he must have been feeling, hit me like a brick. He was right. I should stop right now, before I do hurt him again. He had been through so much -too much- from me, that this was enough for him. I couldn't blame him for not wanting to see me. I wouldn't want to see me if I had done that to myself, I only would have been too shy to say so. I left him, all alone in our room, to wander the grounds, hoping only that no one would try to catch me and talk.
My pace was quick, and soon I was walking into the Devon woods. I had to escape, if only for a moment or two. My mind glanced back to minutes earlier when I left. Had Finny been... Crying? No, he couldn't have been. It must have just been sweat. Yes, that's what it was. Sweat. The glimmer I saw was just a ray of sunshine hitting some sweat, yeah. Finny wouldn't cry over something like that, not about me.
Feeling better and perhaps a little self-satisfied, I began a calm walk through the woods and its clearings. For a winter day, it was both calm and beautiful. "Even the sky's gray is heartening, don't you think so? I mean, gray is not always a bad color, but this shade is nice and soft. Like the fur of a rabbit, smooth and quite wonderful. It makes me think of marbles..."
I jumped when I heard that voice, then relaxed when I realized who it was. It was just Leper. Of course he'd be here. Every bit of Vermont that showed up, he was there. I never heard him talk about his home as if he were homesick, but I knew he loved it. Getting up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise, going out whenever there was snow to just slowly ski and observe nature, sketching the morning birds; they were all Leper-things. But I had never really been interested in any of them, nor had I really shown any thing of the sort. However, it was Leper and, looking back, I should have realized it was perfectly plausible for him to ask.
"... I found a hollowed tree the other day. It's not actually empty, I believe it has squirrel nuts in it... Would you like to come watch it?"
At the time, what had occurred between me and Finny was just something I needed to be distracted from. I had assumed in the back of my mind that everything would be back to normal once we had spent time away from each other. We were best friends, so why wouldn't it be? I had no idea what would happen instead. I nodded, thinking that I could put up with Leper's dazedness for a little while -more than enough time. "Yeah, sure. Where is it?"
Leper took my hand and guided me through the woods. "This way..."
And that was it. I should have pulled away. I shouldn't have followed him. I shouldn't have just shrugged off the hand-holding and thinking it was just Leper being Leper; I should have known how it would've affect things. Or at least, not ignored those signs. God, I had been an idiot. It's not a mystery why none of them will talk to me anymore. I screwed everything up, put a kink in our lives.
But I didn't pull away, I stayed with Leper, more focused on keeping myself from being mean and insensitive (Ha! As if I really understood how insensitive I was really being then). When his grip tightened for a moment, all I spared was a small look of curiosity and a odd mandatory-like squeeze back. He led me deep into the Devon woods, not enough that I would be lost trying to find a way out, but enough that the trees were enclosing upon the sky above our heads. "Here!" Leper sounded happy, excited as we stopped and he pointed at the tree. Sure enough, there were squirrels glaring at us, daring us to approach. Funny, I had thought, I didn't think that squirrels would be out during the winter.
Leper stood there for few moments, observing the tree, the squirrels, nature, and whatever else before beginning to walk toward it. "Leper?" I was surprised at his actions; I had been told that any and all animals were dangerous if they felt endangered. Which was always. I reached out and grabbed his arm, taking a step forward to do so and slipping on ice hidden just beneath the snow. Leper turned just then, speaking ecstatically. "I wonder which species thes-" I fell forward, onto Leper, causing him to fall back as against the trunk. Our lips met and acorns, knocked loose from the force, scattered the snow-covered ground. Brown-speckled white surrounded us as the squirrels let out angry screeches at their -no doubt catastrophic- loss.
My eyes were wide and open, so I saw the details of Leper's face so very clearly. His steel-framed glasses were askew and his eyes were closed, due to the meet-and-greet his head had with the tree. And, I hadn't known before, but he had freckles that spotted his cheekbones, all small and light-colored. That thought was cut off I came into the realization of the warmth from my lips. It hadn't been my first kiss, but it was open, both of our mouths having been open at the time of the fall -his from speaking, mine from surprise. His mouth was hot against mine and it radiated such warmth into my very being, I couldn't believe that Leper of all people would be so warm. Our hot breath quickly fogged up Leper's glasses, and I began to pull away, seeing Leper's eyes begin to open. As they opened, the woods were silent, save the sounds of our breathing. I didn't know what to say, what to do. But it didn't matter anyway, because as soon as I saw his eyes, my breath was taken away and my mind had gone blank. They were not his normal dazed eyes, eyes that looked through others and onto different lands, but eyes that sharp and suddenly focused. They slowly looked up and met mine as Leper's cheeks were colored cherry. His voice was soft, with the slightest of a whimper in it. "G-gene..."
I got up. And I ran. I couldn't take it. This- This had not happened. It hadn't occurred and if it hadn't occurred, then Leper and I never saw each other and I never knew those details. I broke the tree line, but I kept running. Luckily, there was no one about outside and I had no need to stop. I kept on till I finally reached my dorm, jogging up the stairs till I arrived at my room. I opened the door without abandon, stepping inside as I breathed heavily from both my sprint and my encounter. I didn't look to see Finny still there. I just rested my hands on my knees as I tried to catch my breath.
I could feel his curious eyes on me, but I said nothing as I caught my breath. Night would dawning soon, so I thought that now would be a great time to a take a shower. No lines in our communal bathroom, I wouldn't smell from my recent adventure and I'd be clean enough to go straight to bed without question. I gathered my nightclothes and a towel and began my voyage down the hall to the bathroom. It uneventful, thankfully. I returned to mine and Finny's room not too much later. Yet again, I didn't give him any sign that I knew he was there, or that he was looking at me. Leper had startled me enough that I wasn't dwelling on Finny and what state, dangerous or not, our friendship was in.
I climbed into bed, covering myself up quickly and facing the wall. While my mind wasn't necessarily on Phineas, I didn't want to deal with him right now. I closed my eyes, but I didn't sleep.
Even with the amount of time I had been in bed -it had been hours since I got in- I wasn't asleep when our lights were finally off. I was so accustomed to Finny talking before I fell asleep, that it had become a needed habit! We weren't talking to each other, so Finny was obviously not going to help me get any sleep this way. I began to take slow, deep and even breaths as I slowly counted sheep, who were jumping lazily over a wooden fence. I reached 1,078 before my consciousness left me to black nothing.
I awoke the next day.
