like okay. yes jealousy is a huge part of the genefinny dynamic. but also most of the book isn't even about gene being jealous?? the jounce happens relatively early and all of the explicit jealous moments happen before then. but even then, because it doesn't start out that way, it's a fraction of the pre-jounce time. it's admiration that spirals into uncontrollable jealousy and a need to get rid of this thing that is Too beautiful. but once he (partially) succeeds, the rest of the book is about concealing the horrific ramifications of your own desire. like the jealousy arc is kind of fuckin over at that point! if you were to read asp as not queer (which like personally, i think that requires a level of willful ignorance but whatever), it's still a relationship and story mainly progressed by hidden/repressed, monstrous/violent desire. like with the straight reading or the they-never-loved-each-other reading, whatever that actually means in the context of two repressed teenage boys who don't fully understand what love is to them, there's this presumption that the jealousy neuters the desire but it absolutely does not. and it also like. progresses well past that point imo

So this is my first ever post, sorry if it shows.

Anyways, I was sitting in English today when my brain create an A Separate Peace universe that I wanted a fanfic for, but I can’t write it. That’s where tumblr comes in!

AU where Finny is alive and well but got injured in a game recently— probably break his leg. This causes Gene to reflect on their days at Devon and what would have happened if he let his jealousy take over him and push Finny off the branch. This leads to him writing A Separate Peace. Bonus points if GeneFinny.

au where gene and finny meet/become friends at summer camp when they’re 13-14, the summer before starting freshman year. gene lives further away so they weren’t at the same middle school, but there’s pretty much one big high school for the whole area and they both end up there. of course they both have their own respective friends so they dont really talk to each other (they want to but yknow). Passing each other in the hallway, hearing the others name on the announcements, etc. The Yearning.
