like okay. yes jealousy is a huge part of the genefinny dynamic. but also most of the book isn't even about gene being jealous?? the jounce happens relatively early and all of the explicit jealous moments happen before then. but even then, because it doesn't start out that way, it's a fraction of the pre-jounce time. it's admiration that spirals into uncontrollable jealousy and a need to get rid of this thing that is Too beautiful. but once he (partially) succeeds, the rest of the book is about concealing the horrific ramifications of your own desire. like the jealousy arc is kind of fuckin over at that point! if you were to read asp as not queer (which like personally, i think that requires a level of willful ignorance but whatever), it's still a relationship and story mainly progressed by hidden/repressed, monstrous/violent desire. like with the straight reading or the they-never-loved-each-other reading, whatever that actually means in the context of two repressed teenage boys who don't fully understand what love is to them, there's this presumption that the jealousy neuters the desire but it absolutely does not. and it also like. progresses well past that point imo

i think that if john knowles had ever came out and said that gene and finny were Legit Homosexual Gay Couple that would like... take away the sentiment in the ambiguity a bit. like, i could imagine being young and queer at the time, you didn't get to say "i'm a boy and in love with a boy??" like those weren't just things you could Say Out Loud. it had to be coded it had to be intense descriptions of his face and body and subtle flirting and him wearing a pink shirt and "there was always something deadly lurking in anything i wanted, anything i loved" and "i don't know i had to i thought i belonged here" and wanting to become him and vice versa. like so much of being young and queer today is not having the language to say that and not having your story play out like a traditional het one, and especially not back in 1943 of all things.

gene says outright that finny held intense loyalty to whatever group he was a part of, that started with the two of them. they're their own group and they know it but they can't say anything like that. i love how the love is so obviously and tenderly there and reciprocated but it's unspoken so nothing more ever came of it. so much of queerness is about blurring conventional lines, and i think it's v relatable that this relationship blurs the lines between best friends and Something More. i don't know, it's just so viscerally queer to me despite everything.
