someone liked one of my TOH headcanon posts from earlier this year and it reminded me about the specific headcanons i have for exactly what types of games the hexsquad plays and how they play them.

luz is obv an RPG fantasy fan. anything with a juicy story and a character creator and complex lore she’ll love. she definitely plays series like elder scrolls and baldur’s gate and final fantasy. she also plays final fantasy 14 and has her character as the good witch luzura and she isnt good at playing it like an mmo is supposed to be played but she loves the story. when endwalker came out luz couldnt stop sobbing to the point that camila was actually worried about her. also enjoys roguelikes such as hades or binding of isaac even if she can only play for so long before getting too frustrated. she also 100% plays genshin impact and gets into arguments online with other genshin fans.

amity is a fighting game girl. she is highly competitive and practices combos with her eyes shut. she prefers the tekken series but when luz wants to play with her they play guilty gear bcus luz likes it’s art style the most. she also likes fantasy RPGs but is way more picky about which ones she plays. she likes fire emblem. she also plays ff14 with luz and is actually good at the game (she carries luz sometimes) but isnt a huge fan of MMOs. she also is the one in the friend group with the NASA ass PC rig with a custom case and the most organized wiring you’ve ever seen with the lcd screen on the liquid cooled cpu and the azura figurine inside the case. she also does custom wraps for all her consoles.

hunter likes games that are very much like, micromanagement sims. like civ5 or cities skylines or factorio (i dont know anything about it but ive been assured by my sister that hunter plays modded factorio) but he’s also a fan of like, old school FPS games like doom and half life. i can see him doing speedruns of those games. (also he 100% once got addicted to some game like fuckin. galactic pinball or something to the point where he was staying up all night and not sleeping so he could play more pinball. in order to get him to stop playing so much and actually get some sleep, gus used illusions to make hunter think he was hallucinating about pinball and scared him into not looking at a single screen or monitor for like three weeks.)

gus is a very chill gamer but he likes games that he can sink hours and hours into. instead of playing a wide variety of games he has a select few that he dedicates his time into learning every last mechanic, but there’s also some games he just plays casually. like with pokemon games he’ll put hundreds of hours into them and carefully curate his team and does like nuzlocke runs but when he plays on his and willow’s shared-custody new horizons island he’ll just walk around and catch bugs and shit and not really worry about upgrading his house and make matching fits with his favorite villager.

willow prefers cozy games, like slime rancher or stardew valley or the aforementioned shared new horizons island, but she’s also a fucking menace about them. like she goes HARD on the min-maxing and automation and shit. while gus is wandering around their island catching fish, willow’s busy rearranging her fully upgraded mansion up in the hills and harassing any villagers she doesnt like with nets and deciding what hybrids to plant in front of her bell trees (she only has bell trees for the aesthetic. gus isnt allowed to harvest them) she would also be running the most high profit slime ranch ever but the way she treats her slimes makes hunter upset whenever he sees her just fuckin throwing them off a cliff the second they arent useful to her anymore. (meanwhile hunter names each one of his slimes and always feeds them their favorite foods and cried over casey & beatrix)

vee enjoys survival/strategic horror games, like DBD, resident evil, deadspace, or even FNAF. she’s the type of person to see the goriest most violent death in a video game ever and just go “ew yucky” then carry on. masha and her are often playing DBD together while in a call and are the most annoying pair of suvivors ever. she also likes games such as original katamari and pikmin 1 and chulip. she's also the undefeated DDR champion of the friend group.

and of COURSE they all play video games together. they all have a terraria world they play on together where they all are focused on their own little projects while still working together and are slowly building up their own village/mansion/castle/fort but luz keeps rushing ahead of everyone just bcus she's so excited and she definitely somehow ends up summoning the wall of flesh accidentally

they DID have a modded minecraft world for a few months with both tech mods and magic mods but while hunter, amity, and vee all focused on their factories and computers and technology, gus, willow, and luz fucked around with all the crazy magic and accidentally found out by blowing up a factory. this is where heightened tension between the the warlocks & the scientists began. this spark eventually turned into a full fledged war that lasted two months before it ended in mutually assured destruction to the point where no one could actually load into the server without their game crashing.

bonus: camila isnt much of a gamer with one exception-- when she was in college manny introduced her to WoW and got her hooked. it was Their Game that they played together all the time. they made cosplays of their characters together. they had several dates in game. they optimized their characters to perfect compliment one another when they ran dungeons with their guild. even since manny passed camila still plays every so often and keeps in touch with their guild members. for the longest time luz has 0 idea that camila plays WoW at all and only finds out after the whole secret nerd confession.

I’ve always been super into mythology, all of them. I used to think that Carl Jung was onto something with the collective unconscious but then Anthropology and the reality of multilineal evolution ruined that for me (college will teach you things); but that’s alright because humans their ability to create and interpret their surroundings with equal parts love and fear is still pretty cool.

-One time on Gaia Online I was kicked out of an Okami RP bc I didn’t make my posts aesthetic enough, and I thought it was just the most heart wrenching thing -I’m not sure what people stand to gain back in Ye Old Runescape luring new players out into the wild and PKing them but I was gullible enough to follow some other players at like 7 yrs old and this would have happened to me if i wasnt SUPER good at clicking my mouse and running out of there. Surviving such a harrowing experience made me think i was truly invincible.

-I was supposed to write my final paper for my Japanese Buddhism class on… surprise, Japanese Buddhism but I really wanted to talk about Kenji Miyazawa’s writings instead so I spun it through a lens of his Nichiren conversion and its impact on his poetry. My prof saw right through me but I still got an A.

End of 2020/beginning of 2021 I was really trying to get back into rp but couldn’t get into the various systems on discord. One community that I was trying was affiliates with The Officer’s Academy and an active tumblr community rly caught my interest. The rest is history!

Not really? I need to be able to connect with them on some level obviously, and I tend to prefer characters who have like a clear childhood or background for why they are That Way. Micaiah was actually p difficult for this reason but being able to really shape her based on what little we know also made me ever more fond. ♥️ I love to stare at pegasusknight and serenesforest supports pages late at night tehe

What do you believe you enjoy writing the most?

I don’t particularly plan ahead but I really love when threads reflect past character development whether in a thread with the same muse or different. TOA extended universe… I’d like to do that more I think but first I have to actually make a support page huh? Since Rhea’s back she’s made more bonds though and that makes me happy.

Favorite TOA-related memory: Definitely Unlocked 2021! It was my first event after really starting to warm to the TOA community and i was an awe of the scope of the events. The mods thought this far ahead?! We can do this?! Every event since has just been even more fun but the surprise and intrigue i felt then really stayed with him

36. Share a funny FE-related story, either ingame or not!

allow me to regale you the tale of my most valuable unit ive ever had in any playthrough ever (okay. second most valuable. no one beats odin dark conquest), the most specialest boy youve ever seen!!!

so basically i really wanted the piss color home screen in three houses and for those who dont know, basically you get a “badge of honor” unique home screen in three houses (the same exact screen recolored yellow) on maddening without new game+. i believe you can do this on casual? but im a little tryhard loser, so i picked maddening classic, picked the black eagles (crimson flower doesnt have hunting by daybreak OR a map that forces you to deploy potentially benched in house characters, so that was my pick) and started the run. only to be met with one small problem:

i am a fucking idiot.

three houses maddening isnt that hard once you know what youre doing, but the funny thing about three houses maddening is that it dropped like. six (????) months after three houses dropped just like. out of nowhere. for no reason. and i cannot turn down a challenge so i jumped into it immediately and got my ass kicked. immediately.

my main problem is that i didnt have a reliable damage soaker/tank. edelgard is tanky, but she can only take so much and her stats havent had time to snowball yet. plus, early game has poison strike three range archers, so even if she had the stats, they’d wittle her down. maddening ai is not the same as normal/hard, and at the time i didnt know how to control it, so someone had to go eat all of those hits to bait them over! but adrestia, kingdom of mages, has the durability of a piece of straw. so, we need to avoid taking damage. but we also need to bait out the ai somehow. soooo… how?

i was looking through a couple of classes that might be able to help me out and i notice that ferdinand’s personal skill gives him a certain amount of avoid at full hp. and theres a certain skill line that gives another set number of avoid if you hold a certain weapon. the lighest physical weapon (barring gauntlets) are swords, which he has a natural affinity for. but how do you get sword avoid? literally the only way is through dancer. for some fucking reason. so, i did what had to be done, expecting this to blow up in my face, but as you can tell from the fact that i am making this post, the opposite happened. because actually, as it turns out, having a refresh unit in one of fire emblem’s most difficult game modes that cannot get hit is actually very, very useful.

for the entire game after he went into dancer i chucked him on the front lines right next to edelgard, and he was pretty much a one man army. not nearly as strong physically as edelgard, but much faster and with much more utility. and, hes still ferdinand, so on the off chance he got hit by like a stray 12%, he’d easily eat that hit with his hp stat, only to be physic’d up right back to full. unkillable dancer. baited enemies like it was no ones business AND buffed my entire team just by virtue of being there. i could send my frail ass little mages into a crowd nuke someone, have ferdie dance to let them retreat to safety. edelgard and giant galeforce axe could act TWICE without worrying about dancer positioning. it was just. god. carried my whole game. and he looked GOOD while doing it. he truly is ferdinand von aegir. also took out the final map in two turns no casualties. he did that for me by the way (edelgard galeforce axe)

food talk thoughts post. not strictly dunmeshi.

i think one of the interesting things to me is how food is very very human. we all need food to function and survive, but we all need delicious food for the mind. and we will all eat food around others bc we're all social creatures and cooking in big batches is more efficient.

food is. human. to eat is human.

and because we all need food it becomes a core anchor that says what is human and what is not. in stories where food isnt a thing at all, the characters feel like an extreme caricature of humans. i find this extremely true in shounen jump mangas where suddenly theres a long tournament arc and theres just no food in sight. characters just become their power level. they often become ideologies fighting against each other rather than human-like people yelling at each other.

this is true for video games like GTA, call of duty, far cry, resident evil, and cyberpunk 2077 and much of the early final fantasy games where food isnt at all a thing. theres potions and spells and health stims or hiding until the blood red recedes from the screen but. there isnt a delicious meal in them, and when available characters eat them like rations. its not a critical source or even a significant source of health recovery or enjoyment even if its there.

and i think theres been a significant effort to put food in a lot of video games lately. especially the yakuza series, and even fire emblems of late.

like think about how much less human unicorn overlord feels if there wasnt the meal mechanic in it. how much less human kiryu would feel if the player couldnt bring him to stuff his face in Mos Burger. how disconnected alear would feel from the rest of the engage cast without them demanding one of their friends cook them a meal

so food is. good.

put them in stories. thats what i do. i think our blorbos all deserves a treat.

I have only met Jairo/blinded.by.fear once at Colossalcon 2019. I wasnt a victim, but I'd still like to share my story.

I have been trying to expand my photography skills and know cosplay photography is a great way to work with many different subjects. My friend, knowing this, asked if I wanted to practice by doing a small shoot for them and 2 others who did a Sacred Stones group. I was excited because I love Fire Emblem characters and agreed. I am not a great photographer and just wanted practice, so I did the shoot for free. My friend and I show up to meet the others and when I introduce myself Jairo does not say a single word to me. We got there maybe 15 minutes before our arranged meeting time so when we all sat down for a second it wasnt a huge concern.

Then he started talking to other people in the area. This goes on for near over a half hour and we are now well past our scheduled time. I mention I'm not free all day (I do panels) and that I arranged a time so I could keep a schedule. He continued to ignore me. My friend finally gets him to start the shoot. We do some cute inside pictures and then head out to the grasses. He seems to not have a strong understanding of boundries, but the others said they knew him so I figured he was just awkward. I try not to judge because I dont know him.

As the shoot continues he starts requesting ship pictures with my friend. My friend isnt a touchy feely person and doesnt like to do those types of pictures unless its with their husband. They tell him know, he keeps asking. I say I'm not comfortable and dont want to take ship pictures so no, he keeps asking. The other person at the shoot keeps trying to distract with other picture ideas and at some point we all tell him no. After a while it keeps happening and my friend is obviously very uncomfortable so I end the shoot. He rudely just walks away, not even a thank you or sorry for crossing boundaries. My friend and I walk back to our room and they tell me what happened from their perspective. I didnt hear everything he had said to them during the shoot. We both agree to just avoid him the rest of con the best we can and move on.

After the con my life gets messy. Between work, family, and some health problems I barely have time to talk to my friends yet alone think about the photo shoot. It had been about 3 weeks after the con when Jairo starts messaging both my friends from the shoot asking for the pictures. He starts harassing them to the point my friend is getting frustrated.

About a week or two later he starts telling my friend that I'm awful for making them pay for photos and it take this long. I am livid, he is under the impression my friend paid for them and had no intention of paying for part of it. Finally I get annoyed enough to stay up late and quickly get threw some editing before sending the pictures out. He had my name and contact information this entire time and not once did he come to me. He continued to harass my friend despite them telling him to just talk to me. So he is a creep, he is rude, he is cheap, and over all a terrible person.

I am so very proud of everyone speaking up about his harrassment. It is not an easy thing to do and he is very outspoken when he tries to twist your stories. I stand at your side as a witness to who he really is. If you ever need support please feel free to reach out.

Also if you ever need someone to get you out of an uncomfortable situation with anyone and you see me at a con feel free to grab me. I'll be your brother, friend, cousin, or anything you need to get you out of there and somewhere safe.

fe4 holy war: finn/lachesis. ok i only play fe4 halfway the first gen so i cant say much but i read the manga and it makes me ship finnchesis so much!!! he fills the hole left by eldigans death in her heart…….. and she enjoys his company so much he becomes someone very important to her i love slow-building love

fe6: roy/lilina. i havent finished this im stuck at one chapter and i dont feel playing it lmao but im weak for childhood friends!!!

fe7: imma cheat on this one THE FIRST ONE IS ELIWOOD/NINIAN THEY HAVE MY HEART AND SOUL. hes super gentle to her and theyre completely lovestruck with each other throughout the game i just…… cannot not ship them………….. the second one is kent/lyn because liege/knight pairing is my other weakness lmao. and their support!!!! lyn wants to be more than just his lady ugh their a support is so good

fef: m!corrin/azura, since they share somewhat same backstories i think they find consoles in each other’s company. also idk if you play feh but theres this one version of corrin that shows up in young azura’s dream world, and his dialogues are very azura-centered, much more than his female counterpart, and they all say he just wants her to be happy im crying (esp remembering her fate in birthright and conquest :v)

fe3h: felix/annete theyre just!!! so cute!!!! felix cant stop thinking of her???? and super soft to her unlike to the others????? she unknowingly makes her way into his heart ughhhh. i also like cyril/lysithea a lot, i really cant choose between them.

feh: not a main game but alfonse has all my uwus so i have to say this…… i love alfonse/summoner!!!! alfonse refusing to get close to any hero but ending up getting super close to the summoner……… he trusts them so much!!!! seriously like 80% of alfonses dialogues are related to the summoner and lemme tell you i squeal every time he talks about them lol

moving on for other series i’ll do another list for the series that are on top of my mind!!!

kny: (you must have seen this coming) GIYUU/SHINOBU OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM SO MUCH I JUST WANT THEM TO BE HAPPY. for shinobu, since she always dons kanae’s smiling mask, i think shinobu finds comfort in teasing giyuu since she can be a little bit like herself when doing that, like a small breather. for giyuu, since he isnt close with other pillars, i think he appreciates shinobu’s company, even though she keeps teasing him. THEY ALSO HAVE PARALLELS they lose their sisters and they hate their own circumstances (giyuu with him passing the final selection without doing anything and shinobu with her physique). and his shocked face when she [redacted]????? man i will forever be sad about that. and a side note i like tanjirou/kanao a lot! kanao defends aoi and the girls because she remembers tanjirous words. she legit cries because shes relieved tanjirou is alive. she even raises her voice to keep others quiet because she worries about him. tanjirou is a changing force in her life!!!!

gbf: gran/lyria. their lives are intertwined………… they literally cant live without each other………. and gran is so protective to lyria ugh i love that!!!! ALSO THE ANIME!!!!!!!! theres one original story episode about lyria almost dies because she hates her existence so much she wants to disappear but gran brings her back……………. not by his own actually but like he promises to always be there for her or something like that theyre just so cute. additionally i love lucio/djeeta a lot because lucio is sexy af HAHAHA BUT!!! you also have to look at this before you judge me

fairy tail: natsu/lucy. theyre my comfort otp i think??? like i still lurk in their tags and search for their fanfics til now. i also sometimes reread their moments in manga because i love them that much. SHES HIS HOME GDI and natsu legit doesnt join a fight because hes super worried about lucy after her fathers death oh my god. my favourite moment is when natsu uses lucy fire its just so funny but describes their relationship so well!!!

Will the Nintendo Switch be a resurgence for Nintendo franchises?

                  There’s no denying that the Nintendo Switch is doing well. With 32 million units sold by the end of 2018 with no signs of slowing down due to a year packed full of game releases such as Luigi’s mansion 3, Animal Crossing, FE three houses, Mario Maker 2, Links Awakening, Yoshis crafted world, Pokemon Gen 8, countless Final Fantasy games, Dragon quest, etc etc. And keep in mind these are just the games announced so far for 2019. It’s possible Nintendo may have a couple of more releases up their sleeve this year. I think it’s safe to say Nintendo’s strong sales with the Switch will continue through 2019. The switch has enjoyed great sales, especially when you compare it to it’s older brother. The Switch has so far sold 32 million, whereas the Wiiu for it’s entire life sold just 13 million. Looking at these sales numbers, and announced games for the Switch i believe we will get a resurgence of franchises on the Switch. And it’s all thanks to the switch sales.FE was on the Gamecube, Wii, DS and 3DS. but it skipped the Wii U. you could argue that was due to low sales for the FE series. But that’s not true, FE awakening made the series popular again back in 2012 which sprouted two sequels for the 3DS. But not one for the Wii U.But sure I’ll concede, FE maybe isn’t that popular of a franchise. But what about Animal Crossing? A series that got it start in Japan on the N64, but truly found life on the Gamecube. That continued it’s life on the DS, Wii, and 3ds. With the Wii U simply getting a party spin off game. There’s also metroid prime 4. The prime series is a beloved series that found life on the Gamecube and Wii but as we all know, skipped the Wii U. It’s instead finding it’s way to the Switch. Why did it skip the Wii U. Nintendo knew how excited fans would have been for this game. Well Nintendo could probably think of 13 million reasons why. Switch seems to the be the console all these games are coming home to, including Pokemon. For the first time a main series Pokemon title is coming to a home console. Although the Switch sales can’t be the reason why, if it was just sales why not on the Wii? Well aha! Allow me to get to my second and probably more important note. Sales I’m sure is a nice incentive for Nintendo to bring these franchises that skipped the Wii U over to the Switch. But there’s one more major reason, and it’s in the numbers of Animal Crossing. I know, numbers aren’t fun, but allow me to get this out real quick. The Wii was a major hit for Nintendo selling 101 million units. The 3DS (including all models) sold an impressive (but ya know, not as impressive) 74 million. Animal Crossing on the Wii (the much better selling console) sold 4 million units. Animal Crossing on the 3DS sold 12 million. Some Nintendo franchises just lend them selves to portability. Animal Crossing is one of these series. Fire Emblem is one of these series and of course Pokemon is one of these series, which is why we are for the first time getting Pokemon on a home console.Then there’s titles like F-Zero. Which not only skipped the Wii U but also the Wii. I feel a wind is changing, we will get an F-Zero game on the Switch. It probably won’t be this year. But with the insane install base the Switch has garnered and seemingly forgotten franchises such as Metroid Prime finding it’s way back (slowly, but it will get here guys) we will get a new F-Zero game on the switch. And Pikmin 4, and Star Fox (I know, Star Fox zero. But i mean a Star Fox game fans will like) This feels like a new era for Nintendo, and the Switch feels like a system Nintendo is putting everything into.      Thank you so much for taking time to read this. heres my full thoughts on the nintendo direct since ive only posted reactions mostly

splatoon 3 having salmon run is kind of confusing due to the story (the story mode definitely seems ANTI salmon run and grizz). not sure how that works but ok. it’s my favorite mode from splatoon 2 so i have no complaints in terms of gameplay. wish they showed more of the game though. definitely getting a splatoon 3 direct later. also i called the release window. may was splatoon 1, june was octo expansion, july was splatoon 2... maybe august is splatoon 3?

never played wii sports (i dont even think i tried the demo they automatically downloaded onto everyones wii u’s) so i dont really have an opinion about switch sports. im relieved whenever i see new games i dont care about at this point

ive wanted mario kart 8 deluxe dlc for years but that was mainly along the lines of bringing in new characters (such as octoling or pauline) than courses. theyd better add waluigi pinball though, ive wanted that since 2014

i love xenoblade, but the games are so huge and take so long to digest that lately i’d kind of been thinking that after i eventually finish xcx and eventually EVENTUALLY play and finish xc2 (and probably its dlc) then i might just leave it at that and pass on whatever comes later. but... xc3 looks really good. like really really good. looking forward to playing it hopefully within the next decade

in august 2011 i visited my cousins and they introduced me to portal (and minecraft and atla incidentally). i played it for a bit but struggled with one of the early puzzles, even when they told me what i had to do. im better at video games now so maybe i could try it again once it hits switch? idk

kirby’s mouthful mode just makes me concerned for his health tbh. why are things getting stuck in his mouth? i need to play the game so i can take him to see a doctor

im glad theyve finally added the only nes game i care about and one of the few snes games i care about to the switch. got too many games i havent played before to play instead though. and as ive said i dont think i care if they localize mother 3 anymore, for one thing they should change “ma***sies” to something that doesnt include a slur and i dont think most people would even realize it needs to be changed currently so i dont see nintendo doing anything about it unless that changes

as ive said, metroid dread easy mode wouldve been nice before id cheated my way through. also i dont even know if it wouldve helped since it specifies boss damage and not overall damage. and that doesnt even cover the issues dealing with emmi (being able to cheat to autocounter made those sections much less stressful)

fire emblem warriors is another game im relieved to not have to care about! something weird i’ve noticed about warriors games is i’ll play them and they’ll be fun and then suddenly i dont want to play them at all. happened with hyrule warriors on wii u and then again on age of calamity. i wouldnt really call it getting burned out, feels different. happened in the postgame both times, so maybe the postgame gameplay just isnt as rewarding to me? idk. anyway i cant even begin to care about three hopes as i’m still working through my first route of three houses after 2 years. hate the calendar. you give me control over the passage of time and expect me to move it forward at a reasonable rate? this was your mistake. i’ll spend 2 hours figuring out how to best use the month i’m on and when i get to the next month and have to do it all over again i quit for a few more real life months. the battles are fun though

live a live sounds like it might be good but good luck getting me to play anything else new in 2022. maybe eventually though

weird how they released a version of kingdom hearts specifically “for cloud.” does he even have a switch? i havent played final fantasy vii

Blog Update and Semi-Hiatus

You might have noticed that I haven’t been on Tumblr too much recently.  If you are in my discord you also have probably noted my absence there as well.  I wanted to give you all an explanation for that and to sort of formally declare a semi-hiatus from this blog.  The Fire Emblem series has meant the world to me for many years, but for the past year or so that spark hasnt been there.  Fates has it’s high points to be sure, but its lows are very low and combined with the general attitude I get from developer interviews I was very disheartened and feeling like FE wasnt the series that I loved for so long anymore.  I had a lot of hope that Echoes would rekindle my love for the series and push past the negatives and just see the positives but after playing Echoes I really just loved Echoes, all of my feelings about the series at large stayed the same.  I know it might not always seem this way from my blog but I am not a person who likes to complain or criticize all the time, but I stuck around because I genuinely like all the people who interact with my posts and/or talk to me on a regular basis and I didnt want to not have you in my life at all. 

What has finally pushed me past the limit isnt anything from the series itself: I started a new job recently thats both physically and emotionally taxing and when I am not at work I really just want to do things that make me happy and the sad truth is thinking about Fire Emblem kind of just makes me sad.  So thats why Ive been avoiding both here and my discord and thats why I am going on a semi-hiatus.  I don’t know how long it will last, I could wake up in a month and feel totally different about the series, I could see a proper announcement of Switch FE and be really excited about the direction they are going with it and be back at my normal blogging here.  Or this could be goodbye forever....

...Okay probably not that last one.  Time to explain what I mean by “Semi-hiatus.” Because I really do like all my friends here on tumblr and discord I am going to make a sideblog for personal/miscellaneous stuff.  I also want to make a Final Fantasy blog.  As for this blog, it will become a “just Fire Emblem” blog, which is maybe what it ought to have always been, and I will update it fairly rarely, mostly in response to any FE related asks if I get any, updates to my FE collection (I wont be buying as much most likely but I have a few things already preordered plus I still cant say no to that Sakura Nendoriod, so there will be at least a couple posts there), and stream announcements if I ever am streaming FE.

I plan on making the new blogs tomorrow, so I will make another post once thats done for anyone who wants to keep up with me and/or shares my love for FF.

Time for an all nighter

dancerladyaqua  I really liked P4. P3 was pretty good but I never finished it. I'm super looking forward to P5 when I get home. I'd say try it out if you can. From what I gather, P5 is more like P4 than P3, so maybe P4 would be a good starting point? (I didn't know you liked SMTxFE! I loved the gameplay a bunch.)

I will freely admit that the main thing stopping me from really enjoying this series is the cultural divide.  I like traditional rpg gameplay but its never enough on its own for me to want to play something, I need to like the rest of the game’s presentation too.  I know there is a big crossover between “fire emblem fans” and “japanese pop-culture enthusiasts” but I am not in that crossover group.  The idea of exploring a high fantasy world with swordsmen and dragons and mages like in Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy is instantly appealing to me.  The idea of exploring modern japan with schoolchildren is very much a barrier to entry for me.  And it goes beyond just the setting.  Every aspect of a game that's, for lack of a better term “very Japanese” feels off to me.  And there are specific things that I can point out in media like this, like nosebleeds indicating sexual arousal, or the name endings (if post-localization a game is still dropping “sans” “chans” and “kuns” then I am almost certainly done with it) that just leave me scratching my head, but more importantly its things that characters consistently do or say that just dont make sense to me (or just as often, things characters DONT do or say even though it seems to me like they would want to.)  And I am just left feeling, I dont know, cognitive dissonance?  Im sitting there constantly thinking “this isnt how people talk!! this isnt what people would do in this situation!!!” while I watch or play, even though logically I know it all feels perfectly natural in Japanese or to someone who lives in or knows a lot about Japan.  I cant think of the right word, but its like games like that are square pegs and my brain has a round hole: I know it fits right to some people but for me its all wrong. 

But! Despite all that I still liked Tokyo Mirage Sessions#FE, easily the most overwhelmingly Japanese thing I have ever consumed.  And It was primarily because right off the bat I enjoyed most of the characters, and that is more than enough to get me over the hump of the cultural dissonance and get into a game.  And so to finally bring this back to Persona 3/4/5, its basically just a flip of a coin whether I will like it or not.  I have absolutely no way to know if the writing for the characters (or the localization, I never know who to blame or thank for my disliking or liking of characters) will be to my liking until I actually invest in it.  So I flipped the coin with P3 years ago and it landed on tails. Same with SMTIV.  I flipped again for TMS and it landed heads.  Do I flip again with P4 for, what is it, $20 these days?  Do I flip again with P5 for $60?  (yes, my roommate has it and I could borrow it from her, but not until shes done, which wont be for a couple of months, and I am mainly looking for things to occupy me until Echoes comes out, so thats too late) and if I do pay, how many hours do I give it to start liking some characters if I dont like it right off the bat?
