52 years ago today, March 23, 1971, the final episode of The Beverly Hillbillies aired. It originally broadcast for nine seasons on CBS from September 26, 1962 to March 23, 1971, starring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer, Jr.
The series is about a poor backwoods family transplanted to Beverly Hills, California, after striking oil on their land. A Filmways production created by writer Paul Henning, it is the first in a genre of "fish out of water" television shows, and was followed by other Henning-inspired country-cousin series on CBS. In 1963, Henning introduced Petticoat Junction, and in 1965 he reversed the rags-to-riches model for Green Acres. Panned by many entertainment critics in its time, it quickly became a huge ratings success for most of its nine-year run on CBS.
The Beverly Hillbillies ranked among the top twenty most watched programs on television for eight of its nine seasons, twice ranking as the number one series of the year, with a number of episodes that remain among the most watched television episodes of all time. It accumulated seven Emmy nominations during its run. The series remains in syndication on MeTV, and its ongoing popularity spawned a 1993 film remake by 20th Century Fox.
In 1997, the episode "Hedda Hopper's Hollywood" was ranked #62 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time.
The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the very few network situation comedies to feature multi-episode story arcs and was among the earliest farce comedy series on American television.

SNL Syndication & Home Video Releases - 1980s
If you enjoy 70s SNL, then this era was made just for you. Syndication was really good for that era of SNL during this decade.  You got 30 minute and 60 minute Best of Saturday Night Live, they were just compilations of the best sketches from that era. Though in some cases, they did run edited one hour versions of SNL episodes.  The heavily edited 30 minute versions were more favored by local stations as they ran shorter.  These were the ones that were eventually picked up by Nick at Nite in 1988 and ran for two years on their schedule (On a side note, that was my first exposure to SNL).
Tumblr media
In 1979, Lorne Michaels launched Broadway Video. The beginnings of this company was mainly in video post-production but NBC partnered up with them to produce compilation specials of SNL to air in prime time (The Best of Saturday Night Live came from this partnership). It should be noted that NBC owns the copyright to SNL. Syndication rights to 1970s SNL were originally acquired by Filmways Television, then Orion, and later on MGM. Everything 1980s and onward were held by Broadway Video.  It does get a bit confusing as to who owns distribution rights around this time period as it bounced around a bit, but nowadays NBC fully owns both the copyright and full syndication rights.
In the 1980s, SNL would find a lot of success on the home video market by producing “Best of” compilations based around cast members and hosts like John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Steve Martin. Also producing “Best Of” compilations on entire seasons too. Mainly, all of their compilations were from 70s SNL though in later years they would branch out to produce more for the late 80s and early 90s. There are so many of these VHS releases put out on the market in the 1980s, a lot of them only released through VHS and never were re-released on any other format, so if you want “The Best of Chevy Chase”, you’ll never see it anywhere except if you can find the VHS version. As mentioned above, some of these issues are due to the fact that distribution rights are pretty mixed up. For some releases throughout the 1980s, you had Warner Home Video and Paramount, I believe Starmaker Entertainment had the rights in the 1990s.  Though, by the time we get to the 2000s era, the majority of the ownership went to Lions Gate.  They actually re-released a couple of the Best Ofs with updated material. Though I’ll get more into Lions Gate and all of that once I get to the 2000s era.

The series is one of three interrelated shows about rural characters produced by Paul Henning. Petticoat Junction was created upon the success of Henning's previous rural/urban-themed sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies (1962–1971). The success of Petticoat Junction led to a spin-off, Green Acres (1965–1971). Having figured out a way to bring a talking horse to television without attracting the ire of Universal Pictures, Arthur Lubin began taking his George Burns produced Mister Ed pilot to the networks. Would they be as optimistic about the show’s viability as he was?
Of course, they would not. Mr. Lubin had put so much effort behind this show that he wasn’t willing to take no for an answer. Taking some of the notes he had received from the networks, he re-cast Wilbur and reshot the pilot with new new actor: Alan Young. This time, he teamed up with Filmways Productions and sought to produce the show in syndication.
A syndicated television show has to be sold town to town, which can be quite a daunting challenge. A network show only has to be sold once - to the television network - which then requires its affiliates to air the show. With no such backing, Filmways had to find enough stations across the country that would be willing to carry the show to make its production worthwhile. Arthur Lubin personally took on this challenge, selling Mister Ed to local stations himself. The gambit worked and Mister Ed premiered in 1961.
The show was a huge success, proving Arthur Lubin correct. The show’s seemingly instant success prompted CBS to make a rare decision- it was picking up Mister Ed’s second season. Most of the time, shows go from network television to syndication. This amazing horse would do the opposite- a huge sign of its initial success.
