I’d like to propose a performance of Hamlet in which the audience is addressed, looked at, and treated as if they were there but ONLY by characters who have gone mad.
in Act 2, when Hamlet’s pretending to go mad, while in the presence of Polonius and others, he sort of pretends to look at the audience, but always glancing over, looking sort of in the wrong direction, putting on a show for the only eyes he thinks are watching. When he’s alone and doing his soliloquies, it’s clear that he’s talking to himself, even though we’re listening in.
And it continues this way until Act 3 Scene 4, when Hamlet runs Polonius through with the sword. For a moment after the deed is done, there’s a shocked silence on the stage. As Hamlet goes to examine the body, he falters, slightly, as he becomes aware of just how many eyes are on him. And slowly; he looks at us, and through the rest of the scene his attention is torn between the audience and his mother, until the ghost appears (perhaps in the audience as well) and he’s… sort of put back on track. But from then on, all his soliloquies, asides, he begins to talk to us, in the audience.
And we notice the change, sure, but we don’t really get what it means, not until Ophelia goes mad, and while onstage she begins to give audience members flowers, to talk to them as the others call her crazy. And at that point most of us can make the connection.
From then until the play is over, Hamlet can’t fully ignore us. Every other character will, and does (besides maybe the gravediggers if you wanted to include anyone else), but we’re ever present in his sight. As he dies, we’re the ones he refers to when he says ‘you that look pale and tremble at this chance, that are but mutes or audience to this act’
#hamlet#shakespeare#am i a hamlet goes a little bit mad truther? perhaps#i just love to explore motifs of insanity in various forms of media#and i have some more opinions on how I’d adapt this to film

One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Shakespeare in Love / Colin Firth as Lord Wessex
Year: 1998
Designer: Sandy Powell
I've featured some of the women's costumes from this film before, but the men deserve some attention as well. Lord Wessex wears this magnificent outfit when he comes to inform Viola that a match has been arranged between them. The embroidery on his doublet and cloak is simply jaw-dropping in its variety and intricacy. I've included some closeups to show both the details of the embroidery and the texture of the various materials.
It's a shame we can't see what he's got for footwear, and we also never see him wearing the hat. He also manages to make the ruff look like something a person might actually wear on a regular basis.

I will never make this because it would be for an audience of one (me) but ever since reading "If we Were Villains" (story about serious drama kids in college who perform shakespeare and deal with a murder) I have been entertaining the thought of a crack fic crossover with High School Musical The Musical The Series where the staff decides they will no longer put on shakespeare after the tragic accident that happened at Thanksgiving, because Shakespeare plays would only increase the tension and drama. So they hire Ms. Jen who decides their spring play will actually be High School Musical (which exists in the 90s in this universe) and it ruins the vibe so much that everyone gives up on being dark and mysterious because they're universally pissed at Ms Jen for making them learn choreoraphed basketball dancing.
#if we were villains is actually genuinely good and has actual literary worth and pulls from shakespeare in an intelligent meaningful way#but unfortunately all i can do is comedy so this is the only fan content i have to offer :(#THE THING IS iwwv is just hsmtmts if it hsmtmts was good and also they committed crimes#they utilize the same parallel of casting choices with real life drama which I love#umm so casting: Meredith would be Sharpay Obvi. I think it would be really funny if James was cast as Ryan bc they hate eachother and would#have to pretend to be siblings working together. And I think ashley tisdale and Lucas Gabreel actually didn't get along when filming#also i love the thought of Ms Jen looking at James and going “i know what you are”#HOWEVER it would be more interesting if james was Chad to Oliver's Troy (which is really just reversing their Romeo and Juliet moment)#bc chad is like nooo don't do theater... stick with me and do basketball... but it would be Coded Subtextually#Unfortunately Wren would be typecast as Gabriella and I don't think that would cause drama bc I don't believe James actually liked her!#I think it was comp het bc she was very sweet and nonthreatening as opposed to Meredith's big flirting energy so she would be a “safe” crus#lets lean into that actually. this gives Wren a chance to have a personality (bc I enjoy this book but it is not good at fleshing out women#So oliver and Wren spend more time together and kind of talk about James a little and Wren is like yeah James is very sweet#and I like him but it feels so hard to get him to feel comfortable with me... i guess he's just closed off and doesn't talk much#we also get to see more of her personality and interests maybe she's like I relate to gabriella because I also like to Read :) feminism#and oliver is like Hmm That Is Not My Experience With Him perhaps our bond is deeper and James does like me Hm#And then Meredith can flirt with him as Sharpay and James gets pissed and in character gets very intense about how Troy can't join THEATER#that's why he's upset and sad bc sharpay represents theater and only that reason and nothing else and he isn't in love with oliver At All#Alexander can be Ryan now since James is Chad (and he's also Gay) and Filippa can be Kenzie bc they're both queer coded#Anyway at rehearsal one day Meredith and James and Oliver are having their fighting over troy moment and then Meredith stops and is like#wait guys. This musical is so freaking stupid. why are we even doing this#and their mutual frustration at their art being turned into a farce is enough to bond them together and they're like#we need to focus on our REAL enemy: ms Jen#and then they hatch a scheme and it's probably like. They dump a bucket of fake blood on her at opening night a la carrie#and then put on their own rebellious production... it still has to be a musical because i like musicals#families with children are in the audience and they're like OK FOLKS! HERE'S ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!#if we were villains#iwwv#hsmtmts#high school musical the musical the series

The 1960s were THE decade for Romeo and Juliet adaptations apparently
Really ashamed it took me this long to fully watch West side story but I have to say it’s probably the best and closest following modern* adaptation of the story while simultaneously being its own thing. It follows all the major story beats (some of which a lot of current takes just toss out like vows, Romeo’s exile, friends actually being important, Juliet political marriage etc) but also a social commentary and enough of its own story. I think that’s what a lot of people trying to do the same absolutely fail at because they swap names and places but won’t put in the work to make them their own characters beyond a cardboard stand in.
Also! Want another modern* adaptation that’s really good and its own story? Valley girl 1983.
The amount of time it took me to realize is really embarrassing when their names are Julie and Randy 😭
#genuinely hate how the story gets dogged on all of the time — it’s inherently irrational it’s about young love when your at that age#everything is the end of the world#get over yourselves#romeo and juliet#romeo and juliet 1968#west side story#west side story 1961#valley girl#valley girl 1983#film adaptations#william shakespeare

Lemme tell y’all natm was a franchise tailor made for my dramatic poetic tragedy obsessed, chewing on symbolism and theatrics, unyielding autistic self
#Hehehehehehehhehehehhehehehehhehehehehehehhehehhehehehehhehehehehhehe#Very specifically ahkmenrah. You mean the character has already died? You mean he was betrayed?#You mean we don’t know the specifics of his death?? Sign me up I’m about to Shakespearean tragedy this shit#Gnawing on the door frame I have so many thoughts#None of them are PG-13 all of them involve murder and ruthlessness in juxtaposition with grace and mercy#I have so many thoughts#Y'all sleep on the potential of Ahk’s mother in that family dynamic#Do you not see the potential. Do you not see the ruthless streak. Do you not see the great love comes with great violence#Do you not see the when I said I’d do anything for my child I meant it#It wasn’t just his father that bent the will nature for his son.#Look what I’m getting to is y’all know the playJulius Caesar by Shakespeare right#You know how the first half is about the murder and the second half is about the downfall of the murderers#That but the murderer is not getting the “he was a true Roman” treatment#I say Kahmunrah THOUGHT all he had to do was kill his brother and the throne was his. He thought very wrong.#There’s a reason nobody talks about him and his form in NATM2 was wax#And the reason would make several excellent deeply cinematic shots in an award winning TV show#If I was blessed with film star nepotism that is#Natm

props from bill (2015)
y'all. i'm so excited to share these!
simon lee, who was standby props on the film is selling some of the props he's had in storage. i purchased the vegetable and meat fliers (including chris marlowe's betrayal note on the back of one--that bit was a surprise!), the 'bill' from the bull inn (because that joke is SO stupid but never fails to make me lol), and juan's throwing crosses. tbh i was a little crushed that gabriel's dagger had already been sold lol, i would have been ALL OVER that.
i checked with simon lee and he's still got some props left from the movie. and 'I also have a few items from the Worst Witch tv series if there's any crossover'. you can message him on facebook here.
please do not repost/reshare these images. if you want to share on twitter, you can see the thread here and retweet to your heart's content. i will not currently be posting them on ig or bsky, but if i change my mind i'll update this post with links.
