Start your day right with Purefoods Native Silog Favorites: A taste of home in every bite
“SILOOOOG!” Imagine that as your morning wake-up call. That’s the sound of breakfast excitement, signaling a meal that’s filling, flavorful, and easy to prepare. For many Filipino families, nothing says “good morning” better than a delicious silog meal—whether it’s tapsilog, tocilog, or longsilog. These meals combine garlic rice (sinangag), eggs (itlog), and a flavorful meat dish, all on one…

East Bay Café Depot, 37260 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94536
Tumblr media
Interesting find…I’ve driven by many times without realizing that there was a café at the Amtrak station in Centerville, Fremont. It’s a Filipino/American café that serves breakfast and lunch all day (they close early though) and Equator Coffee. Everyone ordered the Filipino breakfast with garlic rice, 2 eggs cooked your way, and protein of your choice (tocino, adobo, sisig, spam, longanisa, char sui chicken, tapa, corned beef). They also have burritos, paninis, sandwiches, smoothies, and drinks. Prices are very reasonable.
Pork sisig silog ($11.95): huge scoop of garlic rice, two over easy eggs with runny yolks, lots of finely chopped grilled pork with jalapeno, sweet onion, and soy sauce, raw tomato wedge. The rice was fine but didn’t have much garlic flavor. The sisig was definitely too salty (by a lot) and dry.  Mixing it with the rice and adding Tapatio and vinegar helped a lot.
My father enjoyed the tocino and commented on the generous amount of meat and rice. The tocino is thinly sliced marinated pork. The marinade is soy sauce, garlic, and island spices. It was sweet and reminded him of char siu.
The wait person explained that their kitchen is small and they run on island time. So, plan on having a leisurely experience. Condiments include s&p, tabasco, Tapatio, and vinegar. They never brought us napkins. I asked for a refill of water and never got it.
The ambiance is definitely interesting. The place is filled with antiques. The tables and chairs look old. You can also dine at the counter or outside.
I noticed that the most popular item was the longanisa silog.

Tapsilog
Tapsilog in Tagalog is a mixture of 3 different food items: Tap for Tapa, a fried beef marinated in vinegar and garlic; Si for Sinigang, a simple garlic fried rice; and Log for Itlog, which means egg. There are a lot of food items like this in the Philippines.
Ingredients
Garlic Fried Rice 4 cups cold cooked rice, preferably long grain
oil
One garlic minced
salt
pepper
Instructions:
Garlic Fried Rice Heat the pan and add oil; on medium heat, add garlic and fry it until it's golden brown and crunchy. Add rice and stir fry until the rice is coated with garlic-flavored oil; this will take around 10 minutes. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper
Tapa
800 g beef tenderloin (sliced thinly around 1/2 cm thick)
Two whole garlic, crushed, include the skin 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 cup white vinegar Five bay leaves 2 tsp salt
Instructions
Tapa
Mix thoroughly all ingredients excluding beef, in a bowl. Slice the beef into 2 x 3-inch pieces and soak with the mixture Marinate for at least a day. Remove beef from the marinade and pat dry with a paper towel Heat the pan, add oil, and fry the beef pieces until the outside is crunchy on both sides.

A Flavorful Family Reunion: Sumptuous Breakfast Buffet at Guevarra's
There’s something magical about the idea of a leisurely breakfast, isn’t there? It’s that comforting embrace of a hearty meal that warms both your belly and your soul, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. And when it comes to weekends, the allure of a great breakfast spread is irresistible – a treat that turns ordinary mornings into memorable occasions. Recently, I had the pleasure of…

Grill City, 2700 Colorado Blvd, Ste 140, Los Angeles (Eagle Rock), CA 90041
Tumblr media
Grill City is inside Eagle Rock Plaza and seems to be part of Seafood City, the Filipino supermarket. The food is already cooked and kept warm on steam trays. They have various cooked dishes and BBQ (meat on skewers), grilled fish, desserts, and drinks. Value meals start at $!0.99 and a single classic entrée (meat and rice) is $7.99. The grilled balut caught my eye. Apparently, grilled balut went viral.
I didn’t see silogs on the menu but perhaps it’s because I came in the afternoon. They had silogs prepackaged and kept warm in the grab & go section.
Chicken tocino silog ($9.99): garlic fried rice, 2 fried eggs, chicken tocino, 2 packets of ketchup. Since it was prepackaged, the eggs did not have runny yolks. The rice was fine – not clumpy, not very garlicky but it was topped with chopped garlic. The chicken tocino was boneless and skinless, with a slightly sweet marinade. It reminded me of Chinese BBQ pork. It wasn’t fatty and it wasn’t dry either. Overall, it hit the spot but would have been better with runny yolks and better condiments (e.g., vinegar, hot sauce).
3 out of 5 stars.
