#figuring out unity rn

So I was going to make an additional art thingie just to add a LITTLE more to the (potential) sprite look of my original character. I ended up adding more to it than I had thought.

Most of that page is other designs of a sprite simplified look and what I think the save mechanic could look like! The clock design specifically is a work in progress

I think my oc's name will be Penelope. I don't know why for sure, but it calls to me. It's her name now. First appearance right here

I didn't share much of what I was thinking before but rn the concept is that she's in a world where eyes are HEAVILY valued. Not so much the actual EYE (though they aren't wasteful haha) but instead the stars that every person has. Or starts out with at least

Anyone can have stars in their eyes. Kids and adults. But their are very fragile and can be lost very quickly. Inspiration and innocence. A drive to do things sometimes.

The Sandman is probably going to be a main antagonist and the player plays as Penelope, a child with no stars. More uncommon in some areas than others. She uses a lantern to help herself when it's dark though you'll find it hard to see her without it at any time of day. I think the game could be in black and white with some color

So far for what I've thought of for the game, I think the player will navigate the world and I'd hope I'd make the game feel like it has a lot of life. Or at least fun to discover.

I don't know HOW much I'll keep of this. But I am keeping the ideas I've gotten for Sandman and the star eyes stuff

Anyway, bestie these were WILD to look at

Redesigning these meant trying my best to keep certain shapes, and then saying fuck it for most of them and just lore dumping through dresswear instead

Musa, Flora, and Tecna are in nice formal wear with some traditional elements and general stuff representative of their respective homes as guardian fairies and members of the winx and Stella, Aisha, and Bloom are wearing formal wear that’s drenched in years of political context and a lot of it with handed down elements select to the leaders of the body of government

Stella’s is a hodgepodge of her own selection and custom tailoring and Aisha’s is a more modern take on traditional elements that she prefers her royal stylist to stick to as a way to stay on trend and match with what she likes

Lore stuff and some explanations for changed that I feel like justifying below the cut if you’re interested!:)

For Musa I went more Ming dynasty and tried a longer skirt but it just didn’t really look right to me, so pants it is. The only thing I ended up keeping from her og dress was a line down the middle on the upper part of the outfit.

Aisha has the green gem featured in her crown (the one for the heir of Androsia) and her parent’s headwear as I’ve featured in other pieces and has been shown in between the two diamond jewels in the same formal wear pieces and as is shown on her bracelets. I realized I never specified what those are symbolic of ahaaa

The two diamonds are for the land and the sea, each equal in size and color for the symbolism of equal emphasis and importance in the standing of the government, with the green circle being where they touch. The Diamond shape is to represent each form reaching for each other and outwards, encompassing all around it, and the dot where they drop into each other, making the surface of the sea. Aisha as heir is currently meant to represent this unity as she is the result of Land and Sea symbolically through her parents with the way Androsian government works, and she is meant to currently do what she can to represent all her subjects’ interests before she takes her final place as the representative for the Land Androsi (if she does take that position at all actually because there’s some political turmoil in my thing with how government works rn that I talk about some in this post but shhhh we’ll figure that out later)

Tecna’s is a purple girlie.

There are lots of natural ways to dye things purple on Zenith (they do a lot of it synthetically or magically now) so lots of traditional stuff is purple and lucky for Tecna, they, like anyone who loves purple, isn’t normal about the color and enjoys a lot of traditional Zenithian garb as a result since a lot of it has that.

Flora was much easier to do and less time consuming because she’s already a floral person and I could translate the shape easily into something close to traditional Lymphean garb from her area. The only shame here is I originally thought it would be nice to keep it more teal and green heavy since she so rarely gets the chance to wear those colors in canon when compared to her more pink heavy color palette, but I ended up caving to purplish petals instead.

Bloom is doing The Most here, and I wanted to intentionally make her kind of awkward in terms of hair size compared to her body and fit in particular. Bloom doesn’t do much with her hair usually outside of a half up half down, but she has her mom’s fiery red locks and she is doing her first Official Royal Outing and not only is she going to dress to the 9s in a way that is over the top by most modern government standings, wearing as many official emblematic bits, shapes, and references to the royal body as possible, she wants to channel some of what Marion has as an expert diplomat and make her proud and she thinks looking like her might help. I feel like Marion has the genuine confidence, zeal, and presence through decades of experience and proper study and general demeanor to pull off the big hair though whereas Bloom is basically doing the equivalent of trying on her parents big shoes when she’s a toddler. It looks more like dress up on her than it does an actual fitting look for her first attempt at politicking (and Diaspro does point this out to Bloom, and while it is meant to be snide, it’s also meant to be her way of trying to tell her she’s trying too hard and she shouldn’t. Her and Bloom have a decent acquaintanceship of sorts at this point. They’re never going to be best buds but they don’t hate each other or hold any ill will. Their personalities clash though and they know their limits with each other at this current point in their relationship. No Diaspro Sky Bloom bullshit here thanks) and she’s anxious and insecure and desperately wants to make her Dominion parents proud, especially because of her insecurities for the obvious (didn’t grow up royal, new to magic, still scene as the legacy child for Domino even though it’s been newly resurrected, also meaning this is it’s first big foray back into the Magical Realm’s political sphere and it HAS to show they’re still a capable powerhouse, which is also part of why the meeting is being held on Domino too, as a courtesy favor from the other governments involved in The Infinite Ocean stuff to help get its foot back in the door), but most importantly, because she’s not Daphne, and that’s a sore subject at this current time.

For Stella, I managed to keep some shapes from the og dress, but it’s very slight. Stella at this point is big on embracing her moon heritage as well and advocating more for causes beyond just Solarian government stuff, as in the government body that lumps Lunarian stuff in with it, and is working hard on raising Lunarian interests as separate things, reenforcing the idea that their culture and people are separate but equal despite the attempted assimilation under the planet of Solaria itself, an assimilation that still hasn’t been fully stopped or systematically eradicated. She has charisma and charm to spare and is taking the actual nitty gritty “not so fun” parts of politics (ie actual info on sociocultural and socioeconomic trends, trade info, statistics and projected trends, etc. basically all the stuff that isn’t “show up to parties and mingle”) much more seriously now and is wanting to make proper and viable change in multiple areas of her future government, and she’s working on properly finding her footing in the world of direct action and political savvy maneuvering through proper head on negotiations.

Hunter comes from a line of witches who were descendants of humans, and he is somehow related to Philip Wittebane. Yes, but no. He is technically related to Philip by being a clone of his brother, but he doesn't come from a line of powerless witches who were descended from humans.

Our friends are going to lose the fight against Belos. Technically, they did lose, as it was the Collector who splattered him.

The footprints. 2 of them appear what 1 would expect for the time period. The barefoot tracks can be from any time. And the other 2 were too modern. Time travel? Either way, people end up dying. I'm thinking this'll be addressed in s3.

Something happened to Belos's brother at Eclipse Lake. Most likely, his death. This'll be addressed in s3 with the previous 1.

Belos Jurassic Parked the Basilisks to learn how to use the draining spell. This was kind of answered by people in my reblogs and comments, but it hasn't been outwardly stated in the show. And I have no idea if it will be.

The thing King's dad was fighting on the wall is similar to whatever Belos is turning into. This might be addressed in s3. I have my doubts tho.

Birds. The Clawthorns and the Wittebanes are related somehow. I'm thinking the connection might be Belos's brother, but unconfirmed atm.

The circle tablet was broken in a fight between Belos and his brother. Might be addressed in s3.

The dagger was used by Belos to kill his brother. This was heavily implied. It was also implied that the same dagger was used to mutilate his ears.

A sketch for the moment, a strategy for radicals

I read a piece today about Insurrectionary Councilism and it may have just been what I needed to formulate something I’ve been trying to figure out about strategic positioning for our current moment. Basically, it’s meant to figure out what to do to create a left movement that is actually capable of getting us what we need. That is bottom-up socialism. So, While I’m writing a more involved thing exploring this topic, I thought I’d share some thoughts in progress rn.

One thing I’ve been thinking about is the idea of seeing social movements as an ecological system. Different organizations operate as different species, and the color/shape of the movement is dictated by the relationships between the different parts. We’re at a moment where ‘the left’ is mired in high mobilizations but low levels of radical organization. This is problematic because we can’t garner meaningful concessions from the powers that be, nor can we go the distance to establish a new structure. The model of professionalizing revolutionaries (through democratic centralism and vanguards) is also not great because it doesn’t popularize autonomy and self-direction. We could and should form revolutionary organs and affinity groups with high alignment, but the strength of those spaces can easily become a weakness. I think that insurrectionary councilism is a way out, that strengthens our ability to engage and build meaningful movements.

So, insurrectionary councilism is basically the idea of creating an intentional space for different movements/organizations/etc to come together and experiment through direct action. The basic format described would be that in a given area, like a city, different groups that cover different issues, like policing, environmental racism, transphobia, etc. Would come together to figure out how to address those issues through direct action (as defined by anarchists, not liberals). The folks in this space would be folks who are already radical. They wouldn’t have to be libertarian socialist or anarchist in name, but they’d have to agree with basic points of unity that align with anarchist practice.

This excites me because it can allow us to catalyze more radical action in movements without trying to dominate or take them over in a coercive way. This approach of having the folks ready to throw down holding space for one another and being able to meet across tendencies and plan action. We can respond to threats in a more effective and quick way, build capacity, and potentially move out of a place of pure reaction using this form.

We also want to pair this with the slow-burn method of what especifists call social insertion, where folks from organizations with a specific political orientation work in social movements to propagate libertarian socialist values. This takes a long time and is more about building relationships with the widest possible net of folks who have some shared self-interest.

By pairing insurrectionary councilism with social insertion, folks in politically dedicated groups can both have structures that prefigure horizontality through the slow process of evolution, and structures that crack open spaces for horizontality through insurrection. These can become mutually reinforcing, where as direct action is successful, more people become interested in the ideas they heard from the social inserters. As more people start to organize and get acclimated to the ideas of libertarian socialism, they might support direct action efforts.

This idea is so dope to me because of its potential to amplify the anarchic thrust of lots of movements while inoculating them against authoritarianism. We can respond quickly to different threats and widen the spaces of autonomy while building relationships and solidarity.

FOUND #2: Getting Blendshape Expressions Working

Here I am, back again. Not dead yet. Let's get back to it. I got the expressions to swap UV coordinates on the eye map. So that's pretty bangers, except, there's a little * at the end there that might make me change up how I'm doing this a tad. Let's look at it anyways. (As per the last post, this character (FOUND) belongs to @madameclaws ♥)

Getting this to work this way was quick once you've figured out creating a VRM. Basically just have an image of all the expressions I want mapped to the mesh. In Blender I defined a 2nd material for the face area and applied the new map like you would any other material.

When importing your FBX into Unity, change the materials location to external, and fix the materials "Albedo" so it actually displays right. Once you export and re-import your VRM to continue working on it, head over to your Blendshapes, select the emotion you want, (here's the secret) head to "Material List" and pick which material and its new offset values. Mine has 4 rows total, so each expression is an offset of -0.25 down from the top. Use "_MainTex_ST" and it'll work. Not sure what that means yet, but it works. Side note: I tried to swap to URP for my rendering pipeline, but then this step doesn't seem to work with Vnyan. Probably something I'm missing to get it to work, but as far as I know rn, it's best to stick to the default Unity rendering pipeline and only if you know what you're doing should you switch pipelines.

The problem I'm having now is getting the pupil on the model and tracking the eyes in the way I'd like it. I suspect I'll need to do some alpha channel something something, which means I need to put the eye on a separate mesh that's hovering ever so slightly off the face, but I'll figure that out and make another post...

So YEAH basically it all started with me trying to procrastinate on the millions of tasks i have rn, i opened up a new project in unity and at first i was like

"oh dear me this is going to be awfully easy if i do say so myself yes"

.................IT WAS NOT.

apparently there isnt any info on how to make good jiggle bones in unity for some reason??? everything i saw either was only for stock human characters or was insanely complicated. so what did i do?? i googled "unity jiggle bone physics" and found this amazing and very simple to use set of scripts on github!! after that i made it so he looks where the cursor is at and BAM!!

so now.... i had floppy ears...... my plan was coming together........ hehehehehehe.......

after that i just needed to figure out how to make the window overlay on top of the screen and yeah! i just followed this cool ass tutorial by Code Monkey.

but of course it wasnt perfect... honestly i have no idea WHAT i did to fix it but i kept on messing with random camera settings until it was normal. ok anyway enjoy the weird screencaps i took of him while he was freaking out

and then... it finally happened.... the culmination of all my work...... all of the one hour i had spent of this project....

he was... in front of the screen... and also normal....... truly amazing.....

so lemme start with the aspects:

from the start i knew dazai had to be void. i think the emptiness that doesn't leave him is a defining thing abt him, and i think his current self would be happy to utilize it to help, somehow, if he could. void is also about secrets and hidden information, mystery and uncertainty, which dazai is quite full of, I'd say, both inside and out. he seems to be comfortable in that element tbh

chuuya's aspect was smth i considered for a bit; the other options i thought of were rage (bc that's quite literally how arahabaki works, chaos and destruction) or time, an aspect that means you're gonna witness a looooot of death and lose most people close to you. which. well. *motions towards sb*

however!!!! i went with blood, bc it's all about bonds, unity, pacts, and i think this is a big defining thing about chuuya - his loyalty, and his need for bonds and friendship. i think going by his personality and motivations is better than going by his powers (bc that's kinda boring) or backstory (bc that's soooo sad)

now, onto classes:

this time let's start with chuuya bc we're on a roll.

"A Heir is one who Changes/Manipulates their Aspect and through their Aspect. Also, may become their Aspect."

an heir of blood doesn't directly manipulate the people they have a bond with, rather inspiring them and leading them (which, as we've seen during cannibalism, chuuya can definitely do. also he wouldn't become an executive with people in his charge if he couldn't do this lol). in turn, they will become stronger from their bonds and feel more secure when they have people to rely on, which, given how chuuya stayed with the mafia all this time, i think it's safe to say that's the case with him hehe.

ok now it's dazai time

to put it simply. a seer sees the future lol (or rather, will invite knowledge, to put it more fancily). but it's through their aspect, somehow - for example, in the original comic, rose sees the best course of action to take (as her aspect is all about luck), and terezi sees all possible outcomes to a situation (and her aspect is about thoughts and decisions)

so, a seer of void will have knowledge of secrets and mysteries, and things others may not be aware of or want to bring to light. i think this is perfect for dazai tbh, and how he gets info in shady ways or figures things out due to his dark past

unlike other seers, a seer of void would do better with not knowing all the details, which, given how s5e11 went, it seems dazai is relatively comfortable with in his current state.

at the same time, a seer of void will not be satisfied with what they're told is the truth, and may be distrustful and try to figure out what's really going on (see: dazai's suspicion of ango during the dark era). in addition, they will have their own view of the world which. not to get into analysis through nlh and comparisons to yozo. BUT- *i get pulled off the stage by a large hooked cane*

also lemme copy a thing from a post i found and used as reference rn. "If the Seer of Void is not careful, they could become cynical and pessimistic - apathetic and dismissive." hmmm reminds me of the younger self of a certain someone (tbh this one's true abt all void players lol). also "They wouldn’t allow themself to remain under the oppressive boot of a leader, especially a leader who thinks they know what is best for the Seer of Void" HMMM REMINDS ME OF THE CONCLUSION TO A CERTAIN BACKSTORY LIGHT NOVEL

bonus for how that works for them as a team, so we can sort of get into the shipping part too:

so, a seer of void will be the planner. obviously. they will notice if something is Off about the situation, and figure out a way to get out of it if needed. they won't have a problem relying on their teammate(s), and these are great news when their teammate is an heir of blood who will bring out the best of that bond between them! heirs are particularly powerful, so being backed by a good planner who will cover their blind spots will make them a powerful duo 😌

I’m with the party rn because those two left me there, but they’re coming to reclaim Tryggr and also destroy a hamlet the party is trying to protect, and want to capture specifically one party member (Daidan) as well. Their group [Orion, slavery and arms and lots of things] and the party are old, old major enemies. Aun, another PC, knows my situation bc we met before meeting the party [the others don’t] and is lying to protect me. Calix carved a geas into Tryggr when he bought him (age 7), and it’s a kind that gets stronger the longer you’re tied to someone, and at this point that’s been on Tryggr for Twenty. Years. — I also know the DM is going to blind me at some point in the campaign, and shit at this upcoming battle will ‘go down hard.’

After weeks of the sprinklers not working, i've finally got around to fixing them - they're working rn and hopefully if they stop working I can come back and fix em easily. I am so proud of myself, I did it! Next on the table is learning how to asian squat so I can pull weeds outside and program this new walking game in Unity. Its for android! I'm trying to incentivize myself to walk more, originally I just wanted to collect steps via the stepcounter on your phone to make a player move/walk around hyrule field, but I sorta did it and I realized wait this isn't that fun ... now i'm brainstorming how to make an actual fun game out of it. I'm thinking of a game with an underlying theme of walking like in death stranding and The Trail.

So far i'm only playing around, i've never built an actual game before but i'm familiar with the c# language and unity basics. So far i'm still learning architecture techniques like building a manager and keeping track of events to change stuff. I think the hard bits about this project are keeping track of how many steps a player has made, and also making the game 'fun'. My main goal is to incentivize the player to walk more aka 'me'. I also have to think about how i'd separate gameplay from activity. Me myself, I know I can't walk that long so i'd never want to force anyone else to just walk for long periods at a time to get like step currency, but also I want to incentivize myself to walk around a little more but never punish myself for not doing so. Idk just some brainstorming things i'm working on this week. So that's fun! I'm also out of school for the next 4 weeks I believe? So i'm supposed to be drawing zelda stuff but i've been more fixated on programming, its been like a year since I last programmed something that worked and uh you know that's supposed to be my 'area of study' lol. If I do build a nice little app i'll let you know and let me know of anything you'd like to see, as long as its nothing too too complex i'm still new to unity and I spent like all day just trying to build a little debug ui manager that would take Debug Logs and display it on screen for me to visualize its less than 100 lines of code but still that took me all day to figure out lmao!
