based on an idea @username8746489 had where sylvie discovered nightmare fuel for the first time on accident while getting bullied by some older kids (and pushing him further into social isolation now that he's known as "that scary kid who could summon someone's worst fear")

nothing (besides everyone ignoring Orym's deal) has made me angrier than watching Dorian keep up this facade. Dorian Storm has always been a type of mask he's worn. At first he called himself a liar because of it. The happy go lucky bard was a way of escaping for him. He was escaping Brontë so he created Dorian. He didn't believe he was Dorian. Until the Crown Keepers made Dorian real. And for a while, he really believed he was Dorian. That he has this new family and new life and he could be who he truly wanted to be.

And then his brother came back and made his problems Dorian's problems. Until he had to put Brontë back on. Because even if the Crown Keepers + Cyrus called him Dorian, he was Brontë. He had to be who his brother thought he was.

When Cyrus dies, the thread to Brontë had snapped. He was going to see Orym, back to the Bells Hells, back to Dorian Storm. But the foundation of Dorian had shattered. Dorian was created in order to run from his place in life, family, Cyrus. Now he was gone. The Crown Keepers had fallen apart. His friends fell through his fingers and he couldn't do anything to stop it. He was once ready to side with a betrayer god for these people and now they're in the wind.

So Dorian shows back up to Bells Hella and he's completely broken. The foundation of both of his lives has been thoroughly rocked. No brother. No Crown Keepers. The two things that forged Dorian Storm. He wears that mask so fucking well. Because he still wants to believe in it. He said it live on stage that he should "believe his own backstory". The one he made up. The one where he was a bard.

He wants to be Dorian so bad. He spends all his money on Orym, he spins the bottle so he can kiss his friends, he flirts, he blushes and giggles at compliments. Exactly how Dorian would, should.

But he wears the gold of the heir. He has a festering animosity inside his chest. He doesn't sleep. He's thinner than he was. He doesn't sleep. He sicks abominations after their creators. He talks to God's without an ounce of self preservation, daring them to strike him down. He does not acknowledge them as they taunt him.

The god of beauty and magic calls him beautiful and he does not smile.

Yes, BL fans, when people say 'old man' in 'old man yaoi,' they're talking about middle-aged men, as in 30s to 50s. And that's actually perfectly within the etymology of 'old man'--you know, how kids called their dads and women called their significant others? No one's calling these guys 'gramps' after all. But 'daddy?' Sure. The main idea is that the 'old man' is a masculine authority figure, someone mature enough to take care of others younger than him. It's an archetype.

Types are important in acting, too, which is why the actual ages of the actors are not totally significant. Papang and Pod, Earth and Mix--these actors present in their performance styles and looks with aspects that hone in closer to an audience's ideas about more mature men. Off is older than all of them but would have to do a more work to evoke a middle-aged character for viewers (I could've talked about Gun, the eternal twink, but that's too easy of a contrast lol). Performing arts use a lot of short-hand to establish story elements quickly, and casting by type is one of them. It's not impossible to cast against type, but then that tension becomes part of the experience of the story, as well.

A wild thing about film is people getting hung up on realism. They compare the actor's age to the characters, complain about the lack of wrinkles. Looking at these production elements is an acceptable way to engage with medium, but for me it misses the broader goal of the performing arts to transport us through the portal of pretend. No, Earth was not 40 while filming Moonlight Chicken, but did he convey the ache in his joints and the mid-life disenchantment that had stiffened his character over forty years? I was floored by how well he did.

So keep talking about our old man BL with Papang and Pod. Keep making Mix question on twitter why everyone thinks he's old when he's only 26. Do it for the teenage girl who always gets cast as matronly figures in the high school plays. Do it for the novel kinds of storylines we can get from the daddies. Do it for the possibility of actual older actors who can benefit if these types of stories become popular. And do it because long-lives and queerness have not always been seen as shared possibilities. They deserved to be united for hope and fantasy.
