have decided that the best way to read consistently is to have 3 books to switch between at any given time (nonfiction, fiction that will make me actually think about things, and my self-indulgent bad cheesy romance books). so that no matter how much brain power i feel like expending, reading doesn't feel like an impossible task.
#rn my fiction that makes me think about things is orbital by samantha harvey#my self-indulgent romance is the pairing by casey mcquiston#and i just finished my nonfiction book (kill all normies)#but my next one will probably be psychopolitics by byung-chul han or the illusions of postmodernism by terry eagleton

Waiting for Superman
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~600
Warnings: fluff
Summary: For decades, you’ve been coasting through life thinking you’ll never find “the one” until you take Spencer to a bookstore, and he manages to find something to pass the time.
Square Filled: waiting for superman by daughtry for @spencerreidbingo
Author’s Note: any and all comments are greatly appreciated <3
x
Spencer loves books. He reads nearly twenty of them in a week. However, he is a fan of nonfiction, not fiction like you love. The new bookstore that just opened near your house only had fiction books stocked, nothing that would ever catch Spencer’s eyes. Still, he goes because it’s what you love.
Most people who know Spencer know that he is patient, calculating, thoughtful, and very friendly. That all gets thrown out the window when he comes to the bookstore with you. He’s like an impatient child who only comes along because he has to. He gets bored very easily since his big brain is always running away from him, so it takes a lot to keep him engaged. It’s why he’s so good at his job. His mind is constantly engaged by whatever unsub has made it to the briefing room.
Spencer huffs as he follows you around the bookstore, and you pick a romance book off the shelf.
“You know you didn't have to come with me.”
“I want to hang out with you, even if it means being in here.”
“How romantic, you roll your eyes playfully.
“Are you almost done? I know of another bookstore that has books we’d both like.”
“Spencer, this one is closer, and we have to meet my parents for lunch. If we went to the other one, we wouldn’t get back until late.” Spencer leans against the bookshelf and is quiet for maybe five seconds. “Okay, how about you go to the cafe and get something to drink, yeah?”
Spencer grumbles but doesn’t answer you. You go back to reading the backs of books, pushing Spencer aside in your mind. He leaves your side to go find something else to do. If this is Spencer’s only flaw, then you consider yourself pretty lucky. You were at the point in your life where you thought you’d be alone forever.
Every date you went on, you weren't connecting to anyone. Either they were too boring, too stinky, too full of themselves, or they had their eyes on other girls. None of them were ever right until you met Spencer. He kept his attention on you every time you two were together, always put your first, and made sure to remember every detail you’d tell him about yourself.
Okay, that last one is his natural ability to remember everything, but he made a conscious decision to do it.
You spent what felt like a lifetime for someone like Spencer, so you’re not going to let him go that easily.
Over the next hour, you read and grab books that are interesting to you until you have a pile in your hands. You had just gotten paid and felt like spending a chunk of your paycheck on books. Knowing there is nothing for Spencer in here, you search for him in the small bookstore. He’s upstairs sitting in a book nook with half a dozen kids sitting around him. Their parents are near just watching Spencer read a book to them.
His eyes are wide, he does funny voices for the characters, and he engages each of the kids in the story he’s reading. You set your books down on a table and lean against it, content with watching him. Each kid is mesmerized and hooked to every word he’s saying, and the parents don’t mind the nice break from their children.
“What about the dragon? Who is going to slay it?” a child asks.
“Princess Annabelle is.” All the children gasp. “I know. Usually, the prince does but I think Princess Annabelle is tired of waiting for someone to do it for her. Let’s see how she does it.”
Spencer flips to the next page and continues to the story. He looks up and locks eyes with you, and you give him a slow-growing smile.
It’s right here and now that you’ve decided this is the man you’re going to marry. You’ve been waiting decades for your Superman to show up, and it’s been in front of your face the whole time.

First Meeting
Spencer can’t remember the last time this bookstore was so crowded. Personally, he tried to go on early Sunday mornings to avoid the crowds– if any– that came into the shop. Maybe he was being overdramatic. There couldn’t have been more than twenty people in the store with him. But it was still twenty too many. He softly apologizes to the elderly woman as he squeezes past her in the narrow nonfiction aisle.
Most of the crowd seemed to be hovering around the fiction area, which was fine with him– the further away, the better. With his head turned to watch the small crowd bustle about the store, he didn’t notice the person standing just inches from him in the aisle.
You stared at him with a confused expression for a second, thinking surely this man would move eventually. But the moment never came. He was tall with brown hair and long eyelashes. He had the fashion sense of a teacher– correction, teacher’s assistant. You clear your throat softly, hardcover clutched in hand as you watch the man’s head snap over to you, his cheeks flushing red.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see you. Not that you’re hard to miss– I mean in a good way, you’re–” He closes his mouth and swallows hard, looking into your gentle eyes. “I’m sorry.”
You would have felt a little agitated if he hadn’t seemed so earnest, but this man oozes social anxiety, and your heart takes pity on him. Your lips move to a slow smile, and you whisper a sweet, “That’s alright,”
Spencer’s sure he’s never seen kinder eyes, “It’s just so busy today. I was looking at the crowd,”
Your head turns at that, allowing Spencer to take in your features. A light sweater to accommodate the cool air this early-October morning, some Halloween earrings that make Spencer smile, and stunning eyes. “Book signing pop-up, it’ll be crazy until three. At least that's what the stock girl told me.” You’re soft-spoken, too. Spencer can appreciate that.
He nods slightly, looking down at the hardcover in your hand and then over at the crowd again, “Are you not here for the book signing?”
“Afraid not,” You sigh as you hold up a historical fiction novel, “Me and my historical fiction novel were going to take a gander at some biographies.”
He can’t help his peaked interest as he licks his lips, “Regarding?” He’s a fan of history himself and is always happy to interact with someone who also shares a love for it. He feels slightly less anxious talking about something he knows.
You twist your lips to the side like you’re silently debating whether or not you should tell him. You look away for a second, your eyes scanning the bookshelves on either side of you. “Salem Witch Trials.” You answer him bluntly.
Spencer nods like he understands precisely what you mean, “Ah, the more humane witch trials.” It's a funny joke… to him, at least.
But then your lips twitch upwards as you let out a quiet chuckle, “No burning for us, just rope and intense torture.”
He feels electric, which is stupid because he shouldn’t feel excited over something as simple as someone joking with him, but he does. He’s been working on it upon Derek’s sarcastic request, and he can’t help but wonder if it is finally paying off now.
Spencer feels the overwhelming urge to partake in what Garcia describes as ‘info-dumping ,’ but he bites his tongue as he settles on a simple question, “How come?”
You shrug slightly as you look up at him. The bookstore light keeps making his eyes a soft amber, and you’re having a hard time looking away now. “Halloween tradition.” You watch his eyebrow furrow, raising a hand to explain yourself quickly. “My best friend and I each pick a historical event that is relatively macabre, and then we base our costumes around it and throw a party with a related theme. It’s... It’s stupid.” You say with a smile and a wave of your hand dismissively.
Meanwhile, Spencer’s too busy thinking you’re the most extraordinary girl he’s ever interacted with. For the first time in his life, he’s desperate for an invite to a stranger’s party—a pretty stranger who has yet to tell him her name.
“That’s not-”
A woman’s voice cuts him off as she barrels down the aisle with a grin, “There you are, oh…” Her blue eyes look Spencer up and down carefully, studying him. “Hello, there.” She’s direct and forward and speaks in a tone that tells Spencer to leave you the hell alone.
He nods curtly, waving slightly at your friend. You sigh out with mock annoyance as you say, “He’s a friendly, put your gun away.”
“I don’t believe in guns.”
“They’re very real, trust me.” Is your sarcastic reply before looking at Spencer again. “Thanks for the company. I’ll see you around.” And just like that… you’re gone.
Second Meeting
Spencer is sure he’ll never see you again, but here he is a week later, still thinking about you on a case. Or rather, he’s thinking about every woman ever and that he’ll never have a chance with any of them… ever. He’s feeling rather lonely, or maybe his self-esteem is taking a certain nose-dive this fine San Diego day.
It’s not because it’s his birthday. He doesn’t hate his birthday like Elle hates hers– that’s what she told him once—the day started off great: the trick candles, the big birthday hat, his embarrassing crush on JJ. And now, they’re discussing the case, a routine he enjoys.
His mind, always full of helpful information, quickly recognized the ballad from the 17th century– betwixt death and a lady. After his comment regarding what people could find by typing the word ‘death’ in the search engine, Derek’s laughing, “Reid, no wonder you can’t get a date.”
It sticks on him; he would love to let it slide off his back, but he’s not familiar with that kind of territory– dating, that is– so it hits a nerve. A nerve that Spencer didn’t know was so exposed. The worst part is that Derek’s not wrong. Spencer can’t seem to get a date. Not with the pretty intellectual at the bookstore, JJ, or Elle– though that last one feels strange to admit to himself.
He’s too awkward, speaks too fast, and, according to Gideon, needs to relax more. He’s sure… he’s cute, actually, he doesn’t know if he is. All he knows is that his mind is brilliant, his skills involving women… not so much.
He’s silently mulling it over as he approaches one of the bulletin boards, muttering lines of the ballad softly when JJ walks up beside him, “Creepy, huh?” Her voice makes him look at her, hesitating as he replies.
“Actually, uh, conversations between death and his victims was a fairly popular literary and artistic theme throughout the Renaissance.” He’s staring at the bulletin for a second before glancing her away, and his cheeks feel hot when he sees the way JJ is looking at him– disinterest. “But, yeah, creepy.”
He feels like a teenager, and all those years spent in college and not high school are coming back to bite him. He liked girls and boys, too. He should be better at this, he has an IQ of 187 and five degrees to prove it. Spencer walks away from the conversation quickly, his feet carrying him away from the embarrassing moment as quickly as possible. He needs to focus on the case.
And focus he does. He’s happy to analyze the meaning of the ballads at the crime scenes, his anxiety calming as he settles into the sweet caress of facts. Feelings, beauty, and tastes were all subjective. The objective was his comfort zone.
So it stands to reason that he feels lighter after conversing with Gideon about why the UnSub would start to use the ballad if it wasn’t a part of his signature. However, after the team delivers the profile, his lightness returns to his ruminating thoughts surrounding his lack of social skills.
The more he thinks about it, the more he feels the icy breath of repressed memories breathing down his neck. A jammed locker, missing gym clothes, a dark bathroom bolted shut. As the team waits for the UnSub’s suspected phone call to the tip line, he reaches for his bag to pull out a Rubix cube.
His fingers quickly twist and turn it aimlessly until he feels like it’s mixed around enough for him to solve it again. Elle is sitting in a desk chair in front of him as he solves it. He wants to ask her if she’d ever consider dating him, if she thinks JJ would, or if she feels any self-respecting woman would. He doesn’t, though, the question sounding too desperate in his head to say it out loud.
Instead, he asks, “Do you think it’s weird that I knew that ballad?” His eyes don’t stray away from the cube for too long as he asks it, scared of what Elle’s gaze might tell him.
He’s pleasantly surprised when she chuckles and says, “I don’t know how it is that you know half the things you know, but I’m glad you do.”
Spencer feels insecure when he speaks again, but he has to know the answer, “Do you think it’s why I can’t get a date?” He looks up at her now, waiting for the brutal blow, which is her answer.
Elle looks slightly amused. “You ever ask anyone out?” She smiles a little, seeing the genius look genuinely dumbfounded for a second as he thinks about it.
He never had the confidence to walk up to someone he found attractive and say something interesting enough to warrant a ‘yes’ if he asked them on a date. “No,”
She gives him a slight shrug of her shoulders, “That’s why you can't get a date.” And Spencer seems to nod at that, and his lips tighten for a second as he nods before he looks away from her again. His focus is pulled back to the case when the UnSub calls, and for a little while, he feels better.
On the flight home, he’s almost completely forgotten about his spiral as he plays chess with Gideon. When he hands Spencer a small present, a little smile plays on his lips as he says, “But you don’t give birthday presents.” When he finally gets the present open, he feels a little confused as he thanks Gideon for the generous gift– two VIP box seat Redskin tickets.
He’s excited, nonetheless, to experience something new with Gideon, and Spencer believes him when he says that Spencer will love it.
“We are. You’re coming with me, right?” Spencer asks with a slight grin.
Gideon smiles, “No.” he doesn’t let Spencer’s confusion build for long as he quickly adds, “Someone else on the plane is a huge skins fan.”
“Who?”
“Only person in the world who calls you Spence.”
Speaking of the only person in the world that calls him Spence, the date was going terribly. She had invited Penelope; she thought it was a group thing. He begged Hotch and Gideon for some pointers, anything. They reminded him she was already his friend, but that wasn’t very helpful. He knew how to talk to her on a typical day. On a date? Not so much.
Then, she invited Penelope. Now he’s stuck on a date where only one person in the group knows it was supposed to be a date, and he feels nauseous. He’s trying to keep a conversation going, but every time it picks up for a second, he feels himself fumble the metaphorical ball, and it dies again.
Eventually, he excuses himself to get some air. He’s debating calling Gideon and updating him on how it’s going. His feet pace on the concrete stadium floor. He’s near the elevators, and he can barely hear himself– it’s auditory overload hell. He shuts his eyes tight, stuffing his phone back into his pocket as he covers his ears, leaning against the cool wall beside the elevators.
It’s all muffled, barely helping, but the feeling of the cool wall on his back through his clothes helps relax him slightly. His shoulders relax briefly before he feels two fingers lightly tapping his shoulders, and he’s rigid again.
Rigid until his eyes snap open to see that it’s you. You from the bookstore, with that same kind smile, same dazzling smile, it is you. You’re yelling over the shouting, but he can barely hear you. You laugh. He can only tell by your facial expression as all the sound falls deaf to his ears over the crowd's yelling.
Once it calms down, you repeat yourself, “Are you alright?”
He nods, then you’re giving him a skeptical look, and he slowly shakes his head.
“Is it the noise?”
A part of him wants to tell you that it’s everything he is experiencing today, but instead, he whispers a soft “Yes.”
You twist your lips to the side, looking upset for him. Your empathy is so sweet and pure for him that he feels the knot in his chest unraveling slowly. “Let me buy you a water?” You offer, motioning to a concession stand a few steps away.
He doesn’t remember saying yes, but you’re grinning as you walk with him to the stand and buy the two of you a bottle. After a sip or two, you say, “I’m not the biggest fan of football games either. My dad loves em’.”
He nods along silently, feeling so socially overwhelmed that he barely has the energy for more conversation. You seem happy to fill the gap: “I ran into you at that bookstore on 8th, right?”
Spencer’s beaming as he pulls the bottle away from his lips, nodding, speaking for the first time in a while. “Yes.”
You let out a happy hum, “Small world,” And Spencer agrees with you silently.
It's the most comfortable he’s felt all week, and he wonders if maybe this failed date of his was a strange blessing in disguise. He’s about to ask for your name when Penelope approaches the two of you, blinking starstruck at Spencer and you as she introduces herself when the crowd begins to cheer again. Any noise he can hear is drowned out, frowning as you shake Penelope’s hand and say your name– a name he cannot hear. Some more words follow, but it's all small talk until you excuse yourself to return to your father in the stands.
Then he’s the one being dragged away from you, convinced once more that he’ll never see his pretty stranger ever again.
Third Meeting
It’s the night before Halloween. Ask anyone who knows Spencer; they will tell you he genuinely loves Halloween. It’s a part of him, always has been. He likes that you can dress up as anyone you want to be without judgment. He loves the build-up, the history, and the scents that fill the air.
So, when he manages to get the night off, he’s quick to try and convince someone from the team to head over to a cemetery not too far from headquarters. Even when he explains how it is for a classic horror movie showing on the graveyard’s lands, everyone declines.
Now, he’s setting up an oversized quilt on the soft grass, smoothing out the edges of the oversized quilt with his hands before sitting down on it. His hands move to his bag, pulling out a few of his favorite snacks, drinks, and so on as he watches the cemetery slowly fill up with people.
He’s happy. He feels a little strange at the thought, but he’s happy– even if it is in the middle of a cemetery.
A gentle voice cuts through the soft quiet of the graveyard, “I knew I was going to run into you sooner or later,”
He turns his head to look at you, picnic basket and blanket in hand. You smile down at him. He trips over himself as he stands, his cheeks flushing as you laugh at the sight. He rubs his suddenly sweating hands on his button-up as he reluctantly offers you his hand to shake, only to realize that you don’t have a hand available.
“Can I—” he says softly, “Would it be alright if I—" he swallows hard, his voice cracking lightly. Do you need help with your things?”
You glance down at your hands, smiling slightly as you shake your head politely. “I’m sure I can find a good spot soon. I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
“You’re not, honest. I’m, uh, I’m here alone, and it doesn’t start for another fifteen minutes.” You silently debate his offer, and then Spencer feels a wave of confidence surge through him, “You can always sit with me if you’d like. I promise I’ll try to be quiet.”
You seem to think that’s funny as you nod, “Well, it is a silent film.”
“You don’t have to say yes. I just have a big blanket, and I’m in a good spot to see the screen and–”
“I’ll sit with you,” You cut him off softly, bending down to gently get the picnic basket on the edge of his quilt. Spencer moves out of your way, awkwardly shuffling for a second before he decides this might be a good time to introduce himself.
“I’m Spencer.”
You glance up at him as you move to sit on the blanket, smiling as you tell him your name. He licks his lips nervously, nodding as he sits beside you. His nervous eyes dance over your figure as you set your blanket, which he now sees has little cartoon ghosts all over it, to the side of your basket.
You’re frowning slightly as you reach into the basket, pulling out a small cup of jello and a spoon. “I’m sorry. If I had known I was sharing a blanket with someone, I would have brought another cup.”
Spencer finds it funny as he leans over to his satchel and pulls out his own cup of jello and spoon, “No need,”
You laugh lightly as you raise your jello cup to his. “Cheers, then. " Spencer smiles lightly as the two of you tap the edges together for a moment before falling into a comfortable silence while eating jello.
Spencer’s spoon digs into the jello, and he asks, “Is this your first time seeing Nosferatu ?”
You let out a soft hum as you pull your spoon out of your mouth and quickly nod, “Yes!” You say after swallowing, “What about you?”
“Third.”
“Didn’t remember it well enough the first two times?”
He lets out a shy laugh at that— it feels strange for someone to be unaware of his eidetic memory, and he wonders how long that’ll last. “Not exactly. I guess just like Halloween.”
“A man of good taste,” You quip back softly, taking a smiling bite of jello.
Spencer laughs as his eyes watch your lips close around your spoon before he pulls them away to look into your eye, hoping you don’t notice as he stutters lightly. “That’s debatable.”
You’re looking down at your half-eaten Jello cup. “I’m the judge here. I deem it a fact that you are a man of good taste. You’re wearing a cardigan. That’s how the judicial system works, don’t you know?” You look back at him with a smirk, and Spencer can’t help the chortle that escapes his throat.
“That is not how the United States judicial system works, but thank you.”
“Yeah, you look like someone who would know all the inner workings of the judicial system.”
Spencer can feel his cheeks getting red at how your voice sounds—teasing and a little flirty. Oh my god, were you flirting with him? He’s sure he’s all smiles and red cheeks as he looks at you, changing the topic. “None of your friends wanted to come with you tonight?”
“No, not their scene. It’s okay, though. I’m making a new friend right now.”
Spencer’s finishing off his Jello as he steals a glance at you again, stars in his eyes. “You don’t even know me.”
“Sure I do. Your name is Spencer. You like jello, nonfiction, Halloween, and dressing like a teacher’s assistant.”
Spencer doesn’t want to say you’re wrong, even though he knows you’re just being nice, but he doesn’t want to spend another week without seeing you. He wants to be your friend— he’ll be anything you want him to be. “Could I–” He licks his lips, eyes searching yours nervously.
You watch him carefully, tilting your head to the side as you look into his brown eyes. The sun is gone now, but the rising moon is shining down on him. He seems so… gentle, like a deer in a quiet forest. A part of you just wants to scoop him up and bring him home with you, as inappropriate as that is.
“You wouldn’t have to– It’s alright if you say no. I was just thinking I could give you my number sometime, maybe.” He manages with a gentle huff of air.
You nod a little, “Sometime, maybe.” You repeat with a slight grin forming on your lips. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see the projector starting to play the movie, and a hush falls over the cemetery’s lawn.
Spencer’s voice is a little too loud as he rushes to say, “I mean, now. Would it be alright if I–” A shush cuts him off, and his back straightens quickly as he shuts his mouth. His eyes meet yours for a second before darting over to the projection.
You’re watching him again, how he’s staring at the screen like his life depends on it. You scoot closer to him, grabbing your folded-up blanket in the process. Once you reach his side, you drape the folded blanket around his shoulders carefully before doing the same to your own.
His fingers gingerly grab one of the blanket's edges, casting you an apologetic glance for a second as your pants graze against his. You seem unbothered as you lean toward him. “I would love your number after this, " you whisper, looking up into his doe-like eyes before turning your head to watch the film.
He’s beaming now as he stares at you, and his chest tightens slightly when you lean close to him again. You’re so close he can smell your perfume, the scent tangling with the sweet smell of crisp fall air. “You like costume parties?” Your voice is barely audible.
He signals that he does silently, his head moving up and down quickly. The sight makes you grin as you mouth a silent, ‘Perfect’ at him before your attention is fully pulled back to the movie.
Spencer feels warm all over for the rest of the night, and three months from now, he’ll start to believe three is a lucky number as he picks you up for your third date with him and just how perfect everything feels when he kisses you.

Bookish | Wolverine/Logan Howlett X [Male Librarian] Reader
What made libraries so special? Logan might have answer to that, and it's the guy behind the desk.
Quick notes : This was an idea that came to me randomly! I liked the idea of having a more softish reader since it’s a personality that contrasts so well with Logans - think opposites attract! As usual, this story is set from Logan's POV (I’ll do Reader POV at some point, most likely in a oneshot rather than in these drabbles)! There will most likely be a few things (or many) that aren’t accurate to the X-Men comics/movies lore, and this is because I have yet to see the movies… I will be changing this shortly, however! [Side note, I will be completing a request sometime today and posting it alongside a part 2 to the Iron Man variant reader drabble.]
Story Details : About 1,300 words, Male Reader referred to as ‘You/Your,’ Reader has a soft personality, Reader’s outfit is vaguely described, inaccurate implied history of mutants and their evolution, so much fluff, Logan slightly OOC (?)
Chuck wanted him to go to the damn library. He didn’t even like the library. Apparently the old telepath needed some specific books on mutants for a presentation he was going to give to the students at the school. So, of course, he sent Logan. Asshole.
The older mutant pushed one of the front doors open, stepping into the building with his mouth set in a firm frown. A few of the guests looked up at him, but otherwise remained focused on their own book searching or reading. He huffed, his brows furrowing slightly as he took in the large area of books - not counting the second floor. Logan did not want to spend the whole damn day in this stuffy library, so he swallowed his pride and approached the librarian desk nearby.
To his surprise, however, he was met with you. You had a knit sweater on, with a button-up beneath it and a pair of dress pants; Logan couldn’t help but admire your form for a beat, taking in the small details about you. It took a moment before you looked up from the book you were reading, a warm smile gracing your face as you set it aside and gave the mutant your full attention.
“How may I help you, sir?”
Your voice made something flutter in Logans’ stomach, but he pushed the feeling aside. He cleared his throat, shoving his hands in his pockets as he looked away in an attempt to straighten his thoughts.
“Does the library have books on mutants and their history?” He asked gruffly, fixing his eyes on you once more as he continued, “Specifically the mutation history?”
The way you blinked, pursing your lips in thought as you rubbed your chin made his heart thump oddly; why were you so… cute? At the thought, the mutant shook his head slightly, trying to clear his mind and focus on the task he’d been assigned.
“We have a mutant section in both fiction and nonfiction, but what you’re looking for is more likely in our history catalog,” you reached forward, typing something into the computer just beside you as you tapped your fingers against the wooden desk, “It might be in nonfiction, though. Is there a specific book you’re looking for?”
Logan watched you closely, his fingers twitching subtly as he felt the sudden urge to smoke; a cigar would’ve helped loosen him up, he guessed. He blinked when you suddenly addressed him, his focus shifting to what you’d said as he nodded and pulled out a small sticky note from his pocket. Written down in Chuck’s neat handwriting were the titles of the four books he needed, and the mutant handed it over with little a word.
You took the note in your hand, your fingers brushing against his as a shiver ran up his arm at the contact. The small hum that left you was, admittedly, kind of cute - it reminded him of a puppy trying to remember a command it was learning. As you scanned the list of books, a small smile graced your features, making the large room practically light up.
“Ah! We have three of these books!” You stated excitedly, turning back to your computer and presumably typing in their titles, “I know the one on mutant evolution in cells should be in mutant nonfiction - numbers 400 through 500 - but the other two I’m unsure of.”
When you got the answer you were looking for, your hand swooped as you scribbled out the location of each of the books Logan needed on a small slip of paper, the smile never leaving your face.
“They’re all very good books, you know,” your voice brought him out of his thoughts, “I’ve read the one on cell evolution and mutant development over the decades; they’re both packed full of information I think more folks should know.”
The fact you were pro-mutant - something so rarely seen these days - made a small part of Logan feel almost grateful. He had been expecting you to be closed off and aggressive (he didn’t know why that was his expectation, but considering how mutants were treated, he figured it was just how it was when he went out and about), but the way you so openly discussed that you thought people should learn more about mutants made him reconsider his opinions. After a pause, with the only sound nearby being the scratching of your pencil against paper, Logan spoke up.
“Do you have any other recommendations?” His fingers flexed, “On mutant history, that is.”
He watched as you seemingly perked up, the smile on your face turning to nearly a grin as you typed out something on the library computer,
“Actually, I do!”
When you found what you were looking for, the older mutant watched as you added a few more titles to the list of what he wanted and their location within the library.
“There’s a book on mutant inventions I always recommend, as well as one on the PTSD epidemic currently affecting mutants - that one is less history focused, but it’s still rather insightful,” He listened as you spoke with such certainty and excitement, as if the topic was one you were deeply invested in, “The only other one I could recommend would be by Dr. Hancock, a leading mutant researcher in cracking the X gene in mutants. That one is the last one on this list.”
With a slight tilt of your head, you set the paper with the list of books down on the desk in front of him, tapping it with your fingers as you seemingly thought for a pause. Logan glanced down at the paper before taking it in his hand, his eyes scanning your writing as he let out a grunt of approval - you were quick and efficient, and that was something he could appreciate.
“Can I ask you a question?” The mutant found himself asking, unable to keep the words from leaving him.
You simply nodded, still smiling so kindly as waited for him to ask.
“Why are you so… interested in mutants? You seem to know a lot,”
It was a harsh question - incredibly straightforward and blunt, just as he was - but you seemed to take it in stride, simply rubbing your chin as your gaze went upwards in thought. Logan decided he liked the way you looked when you were pondering something; it reminded him of something, but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
“Well, my interest started primarily because I had a mutant friend when I was younger,” you admitted honestly, finally refocusing on him, “They taught me quite a lot - about the oppression and lack of rights - and after that I devoted time to learning as much as I could because I never wanted to make a mutant feel less than.”
Your answer had Logan pause, his eyebrows near lifting to his hairline as he stared down at your seated form; that was not the answer he was prepared for. He was prepared for you to say something like ‘I wanted to learn about others,’ or, ‘Mutants are fascinating,’ not that you wanted to make them feel equal. The thought had a slight smile tug at his expression, the sincerity in your words ringing true even for him.
“Bleeding heart, then,” He said with an amused huff, looking back down at the list in his hand before he gave you a slight nod, “Thank you. For the help.”
Logan watched as you laughed softly, picking up your book and flipping to the page with your bookmark in it,
“I’ll be here if you need more of it, sir.”
The smile on his face widened slightly as he finally stepped away from your desk, his fingers brushing over the paper he held as he began to step towards the part of the library you’d indicated was where the books he needed would be.
It was only when he found two of the books that he realized he didn’t have a library card. Fuck.

I Hate It Here
Summary: Y/n has been stuck at her job at the library all summer, missing her friends. The Pogues come to cheer her up.
Pairing: Pogues x Reader
Warnings: mention of an adult man being a creepy
Word Count: 2.3k
______________________________________________________________
Separating fiction, nonfiction, and fantasy, etc: has been my summer. I had gotten the job at the library, around September of my junior year, hoping to get money to repair my car and well they suckered me in with ~Christmas bonuses~. So I’m here 2 years later, 17 years old, sitting in a nice air conditioned library while all of my friends are running around Kildaire. Basically locked in the public library without friends, but the upside was that I get paid 15 dollars an hour, so at least I’m making money.
Today, has just felt off since I woke up. Maybe it was from the hardcore partying from the night before, the atrocious hangover, or maybe because there was a guy who looked to be 40 just sitting in the library all morning and all afternoon, not even reading but scrolling on his phone and staring at me.
I avoided the man with dedication. He would move closer to my desk? I was now putting books on the shelf down the hall. I was at the printer, printing, and he would sit at the computer by it? I would go to the bathroom. He was like the plague, and I tried my best to avoid him. Until, he had walked up to my desk.
“Can you help me find a book?” the man said, peering down at my sitting figure.
“Yuh, yes! I can look it up on here! What author, genre, title, or anything, would you like me to look up?” I say with a smile, trying so hard to be nice.
“Do you guys have any, like, you know, “ he replies, “types of magazines or books?”
Baffled, absolutely baffled, is how I look at him.
“Sir this is a public library.” I responded still shocked.
“Yeah, but you guys still carry magazines. Do you have them or not, beautiful.”
Utterly disturbed by this old man calling me beautiful, I begrudgingly search what he is asking on the computer.
“Sorry nothing is coming up for it.. Is there anything else I could find for you?” I say, looking up from my computer at him.
“Um, do you have an adult novel section or anything?” He says moving closer to my desk.
“Yes it’s right upstairs, section 214!” I respond while pointing to the stairs.
He mutters a thank you before walking away. I go back to sorting the return books when my phone turns on, after hours of being dead. I grab it realizing that I've missed a lot of text messages. I don’t have it in me to read all 100+ texts so I read like the last 30.
Group Name: That's Squad, That’s Fam, That’s P4L

I chuckle at those stupid conversations before finally responding, 4 hours later.
That’s Squad, That’s Fam, That’s P4L: Me:You guys are so lucky not having jobs. #I hate it here #sendhelp. Jambie: SHE SPEAKS Mybank<3: why are we sending help? Kiewi: are you done work, JJ is losing his mind SarBear: We can’t bear it anymore. Ugh, no I still have like an hour and 45 minutes left. Mybank: We could come visit? Me: Nah, I’m almost done anyway. 2 more hours yall!!! 6:25 pm
I put my phone down and go back to putting books away.
I hear the door open, I turn my head swiftly. The man from earlier walks out. I jump for joy.
“THANK GOD.” I whisper yell and do a little jig.
The door opens again, I think it's probably just a random member of the library. And to my surprise, it's not patrons at all, it's the pogues! I run faster over there now and jump hug JJ.
“You missed me that much?” He says grinning ear to ear.
“Yes, and I am really glad you guys are here, IT HAS BEEN SO BORING.”
“You were the one who got the job.” Sarah says to me as she pushes JJ to the side.
“Yeah well someone has to be able to get us food.” I put my hands up.
“Do you want us to stay until you get off??” Cleo says, “Cause, I'm exhausted from chasing those pigeons… I could really use a nice AIR-CONDITIONED place to relax.”
“Why are we staying?” John B asks, tuning into the conversation.
“Because I miss you guys, I've been trapped here all summer. Plus a free air conditioner.”
Pope and JJ tuning into the conversation instead of fucking with the postcard stand.
“Yeah I think we should stay,” Jj suggests, “It better then going back to the un-airconditioned Chateau”
“REAL.” Pope exclaims.
They all sit down in the common area, John B and Sarah go on the computers while Cleo and Pope look at action adventure novels on the table in front of them. Kie is in the little kids section, Kie pretending to do story time to the stuffed animals around her.
JJ starts wandering around the sections in front of my desk, he grabs a random book from the bookshelf, sitting down in front of my desk. He begins to fake read.
“You're so dumb.”
JJ, who is currently holding a book upside down, looks over at me.
“I think you mean, studious.. After all I am reading-” He turns the book around to see what the name is, and simultaneously realizes what I meant. He flips the book right-side up, “-Pride and Prejudice.”
I wheezed, checking my watch to see how much time was left before closing, it's 7:00pm, 60 minutes before closing. I get up and begin my nightly check making sure everything is still in decent shape.
JJ, Sarah, and Kie follow me around. JJ talking about how they didn’t want to give him gas at the station.
“So they wouldn’t give you gas because it wasn't below half full? That's stupid, they should be happy they are getting money.”
“Those guys there are so stupid,” Kie chimes in, “they are lucky that you still even go to them.”
“That's what I’m saying,” JJ laughs
“I hate it here so much guys, you have no clue how much I want to quit day to day and just drink beer and smoke weed with you guys.” I say, as we turn the corner back to the common area.
“I don’t know why you just don't quit? I mean 15 dollars an hour isn’t worth the creeps.. And well you would get to spend more time with me, your best friend… I'm biased.”
“AND me, your 2nd best friend in the whole wide world.” Sarah says, grabbing my right arm.
“AND ME, your 3rdd best friend in the whole wide world!” Kie exclaims, grabbing my left arm.
I laugh, “Hanging out with my best friends all day everyday sounds nice, but I love my Christmas Bonuses, I CAN'T QUIT!”
“The drug store, down on main, does bonuses and double time on christmas… seems like a better choice honestly.” Sarah suggests
“Deal.. I'm going to tell my boss I quit later, but right now,“ I check the time, it's 7:05, “It's time to think of something we can do for 45 minutes.”
“We should see how many books we can stack on each guy's head.” Kie suggest.
“YES.” Sarah yells.
Jj rolls his eyes, hating the idea.
Kie, Sarah, and I grab each guy while Cleo finds thick and thin books to stack on them.
“You guys are gonna have to sit, criss-cross applesauce.” I say.
“You have been doing too many story times with children.” JJ laughs.
“Shut up….”
The guys all sit on the ground, criss-crossed.
“Are we betting?” Kie asks.
“Sure… John B has the biggest head so he’ll probably have the most.” Sarah says.
“HEY.”
“Sorry John B.. Jj moves too much so he’l have like 2.” Sarah continues.
“WOAH.”
“Sorry not sorry, Jj. And Pope’s hair is gonna add height so it might be unfair.”
“Why didn't you attack him like you attacked us?” John B pouts.
“You guys are easily attackable.” Kie shrugs.
Cleo returns with the books.
“I’m gonna count!” I say sitting down at the table, grabbing a piece of paper.
They all nod. Kie, Sarah, and Cleo all grab books and start putting them on each guys head. Sarah stacks it on JJ’s head, Kie stacks on Pope’s head, and Cleo stacks on John B’s head.
“JJ, YOU NEED TO STOP MOVING.” Sarah exclaims, as all the books fall of his head.
“You only got to 4 books king, you are out,” I say, crossing his name off the thing, “Sarah’s predictions are so real right now.”
He sits across from me and Sarah sits next to me. JJ takes my pencil and starts drawing on the paper. I grab it back, and he then yanks it from me again. Now pissed I yanked it back, pulling his arm across the table. He retaliates by jumping across the table. I run away. Sarah chases behind me and jj as we run throughout the library.
“Gimme the pencil, I wanna draw.” He says, catching up to me.
“Never,” I throw the pencil down the stairs. It lands in front of Sarah, “ Take it SARAH, RUN.”
“Seriously!” He says out of breathe, and then proceeds to run down the stairs, “JOHN B GET SARAH.”
I chase after him, “Don’t listen to him, John B!”
John B and Pope look at each other before getting up and running after Sarah.
Kie and Cleo look at eachother confused, Kie starts, “We aren’t done with the game!”
“Cleo, Kie, no time, get the pencil. WE CAN’T LET JJ WIN.”
Deciding not to ask questions, they chase after the boys with me trying to save Sarah.
Sarah, makes a sharp left, be cornered by Pope and John B with JJ on her coattails.
“OVER HERE!” Cleo yells, sticking her hand through the book shelf.
Sarah hands her the pencil with a smirk. John B, Pope, and JJ all look so defeated by this tactical move, but regain strength and direct their charge at Cleo, who has climbed the bookshelf and is jumping across each.
“NOT FAIR!” Pope exclaims.
John B not giving up, climbs up the last book shelf in the row Cleo heading too. She stops seeing that she cannot escape him..
“Cleo down here!” Kie shouts. “Oops.” Cleo snickers as she drops the pencil.
Kie catches it. And runs towards my desk. John B and Cleo jump down from the shelfs.
JJ sprints after Kie, who discreetly passes it back to me, and slides under the table. JJ catches up to her and grabs her.
“HAHA, I win,” he laughs, “give me that pencil.”
Kie smirks, “I don’t have it.”
He looks over at me who is waving it around. JJ, Pope, and John B all full sprint at me. JJ tackles me to the ground, Pope and John B pile on. Kie, Sarah, and Cleo stack on top of them as well.
We all laugh hysterically. I don’t notice JJ taking the pencil from me before they all get off me.
“So who ended up with the pencil?” Cleo asks.
“I RAIN VICTORIOUS!” JJ declares.
We all laugh. My phone rings. It's 7:59.
“GUYS, one minute left!” I say walking over to my desk.
I go over the intercom, directing that everyone left in the store to return their books and no more signing out will be accepted.
John B groans picking up a book, “BUT I WANNA TAKE HARRY POTTER.”
“WELL THAT'S TOO DAMN BAD.”
I rush to the door, pushing them all out and slamming the door behind me, quickly locking it.
“I'M FREE.”
They all cheer.
“You guys really know how to make a girl’s shift better!” I laugh out.
“Yup!” They all shout together, group hugging me.
John B shouts, “LETS GO GET HIGH AT THE CHATEAU!”
We all agree with him, piling into the Twinkie and riding away from that place.

Summer really is just a time to read and read and read as much as absolutely possible. We’ve had some rainy weather as well, so it’s been very nice to have a cut to the heat and be able to sit by an open window, with tea and a book, and listen to a summer rain!

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels
Subheader: “The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made” which about sums it up. This is a nonfiction book that looks into the rough development cycle of some big name games, including Dragon Age Inquisition, Stardew Valley, The Witcher 3, Shovelknight… and plenty others besides! It was fascinating to hear about the highs and lows, what worked and what didn’t… especially for some of the games that I’ve actually played! It was just narrative enough to keep me interested, never felt overly dry, and was accessible to someone like me who is only like… a periphery gamer at best. A really enjoyable read.
The Brave Little Toaster
I never knew this was originally a book, I only knew of it as a movie! It’s written to be a “modern fairytale” about appliances who have been seemingly abandoned in a summer cabin. When their “master” doesn’t return over several years, a few of the remaining, functional appliances decide to set off into the woods in an effort to find him again. It’s a harrowing adventure with many obstacles for them to overcome, and some honestly rather unsettling scenes — those weren’t only reserved for the movie! Ultimately the movie and book have some significant differences, but if you liked one it would be worth trying the other. A very neat kids novel.

The Brides of High Hill (Singing Hills Cycle)
I’m completely enraptured with this series and I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next novella ;^; it doesn’t even have a release date yet to my knowledge! Augh! You can see my reviews of the early books in the series for more detail, but the general premise is that it follows a cleric from a monastery which is specifically tasked to collect and record stories (both historical accounts and fictional tales) to bring back to be recorded in the archives. With this as a framing device, Chih travels all over an intriguing fantasy world with their magical bird companion, getting into strange adventures, meeting interesting characters, and hearing stories within stories. In this one, Chih finds themself accompanying a young lady who is travelling to marry an older man of questionable character…

The End of the Line
A youth novel that takes place in Holland during the Nazi occupation. Brothers Lars and Hans run a street tram, and are shocked one day when they witness the Nazis find and arrest a Jewish woman on their very tram. What leaves them even more shocked, is what the woman is able to stealthily leave behind: her young daughter. Scared, overwhelmed, but unable to bear abandoning the child completely, the brothers end up sneaking her through the city and back to their own home, to try to figure out what they can possibly do with a Jewish child during the Holocaust.

Finna
An interesting little novella. It takes place in a fictional “Ikea” called LitenVärld. However, this company is known to experience strange occurrences from time to time… wormholes will occasionally open in their stores, linking to other LitenVärld in countless other universes. At one time they had entire teams trained specifically in dealing with these wormholes and ensuring customer safety, but overtime there’s been budget cuts and layoffs and no nothing exists but old tech and dated instructional videos. When a customer’s grandmother disappears in one of these wormholes, a pair of employees get strong armed into “volunteering” to take on the task of entering the wormhole and finding her once again. It’s a fairly creative scifi adventure that offers some decent (though not subtle) criticism of modern life and capitalism.
…Not a bad read, I enjoyed it, but honestly if you want “Weird Upsetting Ikea Story That Mocks Retail Life” then you should really go read Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix instead which, imo, was a much tighter version of this sort of story, with a much more effectively delivered message. Seriously, just go read Horrorstör, one of my favourite reads from this year so far.

Heaven Official's Blessing v7 (TGCF )
Heaven Official’s Blessing just gets better and better! We’re in boss fight territory and it’s getting so intense! This series has way more Gundam battles than I expected but honestly I am here for it! And I’m such a sucker for any story where all the friends (?) you made along the way begin to amass to help in the big final confrontation! Ahhh. So good, so good.
If you haven't heard of this one: it's the story of Xie Lian, a prince who ascended as a god... only to be banished. And then ascend again. And then get banished again. The series starts off after his third ascension (to the exasperation of everyone in Heaven) and is a gradual series of adventures and mysteries that tie together events of the past and building tensions in the present. It's lots of fun, with a ton of humour and heart built into it to cut the tragedy

Night Witches
More WWII, this time not a youth novel! Night Witches takes place in Russia, beginning during the Battle of Stalingrad. It follows a teenage girl whose father is already gone to fight, and who is forced to watch as both her mother and grandmother die to German bombing. After losing her mother, her only goal is to find the elusive Night Witches — an entirely female and very infamous branch of the Russian air force. Having grown up flying with her father, she’s determined that there she can do the most good, and fights her way across a war-torn city in her effort to join the forces to repel the Nazis. Night Witches (the actual, historical Night Witches, which are cool in and of themselves and very worth looking up if you’ve never heard of them before) were known for flying a special type of light-weight plane which could go much quieter and much slower than other planes, allowing them a shocking amount of stealth and maneuverability on bombing missions.
The writing of this one wasn’t my favourite, but the subject matter was interesting enough to buoy me through it, especially in how it portrayed some of the absolute horror that goes along with urban warfare and trying to fight with scant resources, under the Soviet regime, during a Russian winter. Lots of tragedy.

More About Paddington / Paddington Goes To Town / Paddington On Top /Love From Paddington / Paddington’s Finest Hour
Travelling to the UK in July got me on a Paddington Bear kick! I got to see his statue in Paddington station and honestly it was too delightful not to drag me back into the books. I’d only ever read a couple as a kid, so this was both a reread and a chance to read some of the stories I’ve never heard before, these were especially nice as audiobooks to listen to as I was falling asleep. For some reason my Libby is missing quite a few so I mostly listened to later ones in the series. I particularly enjoyed Love From Paddington which was a different format from the rest of the series and kind of a need deviation.
If you’ve somehow never heard of Paddington, these books are about a young bear “from Darkest Peru” who immigrates to England when his grandmother enters the Home For Retired Bears and can no longer care for him. He’s adopted by the Brown family, and the books are a recount of the everyday mishaps and misadventures he gets up to around London. They’re sweet and charming and funny!

Pinocchio
I’ve never read the original story of Pinocchio and I found it a very interesting contrast to the Disney version. It’s very much a coming of age story, in which Pinocchio, a wooden puppet — who can serve as a stand-in for any child — is constantly confronted with a need to balance what sounds enjoyable in the moment versus what is a morally upright choice that often requires more effort. He’s constantly being tricked, fooled, or lured off the moral path, but is never portrayed as irredeemable. He’s a child who is “trying to become a real boy” and is always given chances to fix his problems and return to his loving father. It’s a sweet story with a satisfyingly harrowing adventure and lots of fun naughtiness!
I specifically got this version because of Gris Grimly's art, because he helped out with Guillermo Del Toro's film, and man it was worth it. The art was so cool and creepy!

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System v1
Now that I’ve reached the end of Heaven Official’s Blessing and have previously finished Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation I inevitably have to start MXTX’s first series, The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System. This was the one I was most leary about since, as a rule, I don’t really enjoy isekai stories, but I enjoyed her other two series so much that I figured it was worth giving the first book a chance. And boy! Am I glad I did! The first book started off like a gunshot, it pulls you right into the action and it really doesn’t slow down! Shen Yuan, upon dying while furiously reading the worst webnovel he’s ever seen, finds himself transported into the story… specifically into the villain who is destined to be torn apart by the protagonist during a revenge plot! From there, Shen Yuan — now Shen Qingqiu — begins to desperately scheme how he can change his character enough without becoming OOC (which the mysterious “System” that governs this world won’t allow) while still giving him a chance to avoid a horrible death.
This book is hilariously satirical without ever feeling dull or jaded, which is an impressive mix. Shen Qingqiu may scoff at the ridiculous tropes of this world or the author’s poor world-building, but he’s just as swept up in it all as anyone else. He’s a cunning, calculating character, while also managing to run around like a chicken with its head chopped off, rife with misunderstandings and humour and adventure. I’m very very excited to continue!

Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer
I wasn’t sure about this book at first, I almost quit part way in, but in the end I’m really glad I kept with it! It ended up being much more charming and delightful than I anticipated! This is a youth novel about a girl whose family has just moved to their late great uncle’s farm. While trying to get her feet under her, she comes across a catalogue advertising “unusual chicken for the exceptional poultry farmer”. Though her parents don’t seem keen on having animals on the farm, she decides to write to the company. To her surprise though, she doesn’t need to wait for an order of “usual chickens” because it would appear her great uncle already had some… and she’s found one. And “unusual” really doesn’t even begin to cover it. Things only get stranger as the woman from the catalogue writes her back, and when the first attempt is made to steal this strange new chicken.

Winner Takes All (Doctor Who)
This is a standard fare Doctor Who novel. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t good. It was an enjoyable little thing to read just for the sake of reading something relaxing and Doctor Who related. This one follows the Ninth Doctor and Rose who have returned back to Earth so that Rose can visit her mom, and along the way they get to learn all about a strange new give-away that’s being promoted in the local shops. There’s lottery tickets and free vacations and a new video game and all sorts of curious things… including some unexpected disappearances.
If you like Doctor Who and feel like reading an extra story about Nine and Rose, this one is as fine as any, especially considering that there are some real stinkers out there. The story is compelling enough with some decent stakes, Nine and Rose is a dynamic I always really enjoy and want more of, and the characters they introduce for this story are reasonably enjoyable. A very comfortable middle of the road read.

20 Fic Writer Questions
I saw this and it said “whoever has AO3” so I assume I can join in, maybe? I’m so new to all of this social media stuff and even the SW fandoms!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
36 (since May 2024)
2. What's your A03 word count?
137,911
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch (I've got unpublished stuff for Leverage and the Librarians but it's not postable yet and likely never will be.)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
A Tale of Two Snarks: Echo and Crosshair (9,089 words)
I Know Your Name as My Brother: Adopting Echo (25,972 words)
Echo and the Cadet Batch (8,284 words) (WIP, updated on Wednesdays)
Safe Place (11,063 words)
You're an Idiot (But You're Ours) (1,797 words)
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don’t think I have a ton of angsty endings... I try to end everything off on a good/comforting/happier note.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Adopting Echo! Or maybe A New Hope or First Word... I can’t decide! I love fix-it happy endings with the reunited Batch on Pabu.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully I don’t! Most comments people leave have me grinning, giggling, or kicking my feet (sometimes all of the above).
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Nope. Nada. Zilch.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not yet... That’s when we start getting into that Librarians and Leverage territory. Christian Kane’s characters are so good in both of them, but it’s difficult to decide on the mechanics of a crossover.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of, thank goodness!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I'm aware.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I’ve done some collaborating with my sister on a few but nothing to the point of being cowritten. Some of the bigger ones we have planned may require it though!
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Canon? Tech/Phee!! ♥️
Headcanon? Commander Cody/Riyo Chuchi. Rare pair, I know, but once I had that thought I can’t get it out of my head! He’s competent, she’s competent: he’s two hundred-ish pounds of walking tank and she’s a little spitfire who has zero issues stating her opinion, no matter how unpopular. I’m working on a fic starring these two but work/writing/life balances are making it difficult.
15. What's a WIP you'd like to finish but doubt you ever will?
I plan to finish all of them! 😁 The one that will probably take the longest, though, is a novelization of the four TBB episodes in CW season 7. There’s so much to touch on and explore.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm still polishing up pretty much everything since I used to mainly write nonfiction and that's so different from writing fiction, but if I had to pick one I'd probably say sibling interaction. I feel a kind of similarity to the Batch in some ways because I'm also tactile and very clingy. Being a twin informs a lot of the hurt/comfort or just plain comfort scenarios I like to write.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Definitely endings and beginnings.🤣 If I write the ending out before the rest of the fic, I'm usually okay, but crafting the beginning line always seems to take longer than everything else!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
If I have a good translator program I don't mind. I haven't done a lot with that in my nonfiction, but I am using a ton of Spanish in a novel I'm currently working on.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Bad Batch!
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
It's a 3-way tie between the ongoing Protect Them series, Adopting Echo, and Cadet Batch.

This wasn’t posted with rules, but I’m guessing it’s about highlighting one’s preferences between each listed pair. I bolded my choices (and sometimes didn’t like either, so I didn’t highlight a choice, or didn’t want to choose, so I bolded the whole phrase). Tagging @perkeleen-lavellan and @whenyoulosesmallmind and @thecuntynug to do this, and saying that if anyone wants to do this but wasn’t tagged should post it if they want. There’s no obligation, this was just fun and I thought I’d share

Happy Birthday Jess! I hope your day is incredible🖤 For the end of year asks, 9, 14, and 20! Also if you have the time, I’d love to hear a random headcanon about Ellen that might not have made it into the fic! - @lostloveletters
Hi Battie! Thanks for the asks!
9. Best month of the year for you? - December has actually been pretty great.
14. Favorite book you have read this year? - For nonfiction, I'm going with Masters of the Air by Donald Miller. For fiction, my pick is Mrs. Lincoln's Sisters by Jennifer Chiaverini.
20. What's something you learned this year? - I took over a role for a coworker on parental leave. I love my job, but I've been in a rut for a bit. It was great to learn some new things.
Ooh, some Ellen headcanons! I'll give you two!
One is something I probably won't do anything with, but I think Ellen wants the respect of the men of Easy Company when she walks up to Ron Speirs at a reunion and asks him for a cigarette. I think Pat Christensen may even salute her.
Another headcanon that I want to include in a future fic is that Ellen starts a program at a local VA hospital pairing up wives of disabled WWII veterans with wives of newly-injured veterans returning from Vietnam. The program walks the wives on how to navigate the VA system and acts as a support and mentoring group. The group she starts in San Francisco is a model for others around the country. And maybe, just maybe, Jo Brandt decides to do a profile of Ellen? Do you think Jo would be up for a West Coast trip, @shoshiwrites?

omg!! if you’re doing modern coryo / sej, what kind of part time job do you think they’d do or what majors would they study? if you think of !!!
I know in the book, Coryo was the TA for the communications class so maybe that would just be his realm? Or, i think he’d do some sort of writing major whether that be focused in nonfiction or straight up fiction, but pair it with political science as a double major.
And Sejanus would either be in a medical field (am not sure which one, need to think!), or he’d be studying like education :) just feel like he has the heart for it and it would probably be like elementary/middle school. He seems the type to also end up being like a coach for a school team along with being a teacher!
idk on part time jobs tbh (I’ve never had one so my thoughts are limited there😔)
let’s chat about sej, coryo or both, here :)

Mablung General Headcanons
Tags: Alluded to NSFW at the very end, character description, can’t imagine any other tag
Pairing: Mablung x reader
Author’s Note: If y’all know the canon appearance for this elf please let me know, I could not find it to save my life.
Context
a captain and marchwarden servant to King Elu Thingol of Doriath.
Was one of the great captains of the Sindar along with Beleg Cúthalion/Strongbow. It isn't unusual to see him with Beleg when outside Doriath
Acts like an advisor when in the city
Appearance
Waist length dark brown hair with bangs
Gray eyes
Dressed in fine robes and tunics
Long butterfly lashes
Strong jaw and nose
side note: (Adam's apple on men is really attractive, for whatever reason, but the idea of the elves with Adam's apple is even hotter in my brian. Don’t ask me why I have no clue it's literally the most basic thing lol.)
Ideas
Mablung is the type to doubt and hesitate over the idea of getting involved in mortal and elf relationships
So he’ll be kind and respectful towards you but watch from afar
Will be your friend and help you anyway way he can if you talk to him honestly about things
Honesty and truth is super important to him
So he hates liars
If he catches you in a lie just know that whatever trust you built was just shattered by a sonic wave from Black Canary in DC
He will hesitate to trust you again mostly because he feels very betrayed
Major sweet tooth but will die before he admits it
Is a true romantic at heart
Is the kind of person to glare down at you and say “Behave yourself” with an added term of endearment or not
Is definitely the mom friend, packs for everything and gives it he all
Is a perfectionist and feels terrible when he fails to do something
Takes full responsibility for everything he does
Favorite color is the deep blue of the sky
Hobbies
He reads like a lot
His guilty pleasure is to go out and find stories from the world of men
Mostly because elves don’t have fiction stories they only do nonfiction
He loves the steamy romance stories and mysteries
Hunts with the others
And trains often with Beleg and later Túrin
Relationship
Is for sure the type to worship the ground you walk on
Insists on putting your shoes on the mornings so he can kiss your ankles
And loves taking them off for you at night.
Doesn’t matter if you complain that your feet are sweaty and smell gross he’ll rub them anyway
Kisses your hand everytime he sees you in public
When at home he comes up behind you and will either wrap his arms around your waist, grip your hips in his hands, rubs your shoulders, or kiss your temple
I’d say his love language is physical touch and words of affirmation
Is constantly praising you over the simplest of things
You fall first he falls much much harder
In the beginning he can't bring himself to accept it
Is the King of living in Denial River
And will kinda break away from you some without realizing it
He takes the mortal x immortal thing very seriously and is grieving your loss before you even die
“Do you love me?” (Reader)
"Yes, and it's killing me." (Mablung)
“. . . Why?”
“Because I can’t keep you.”
You’ll have to remind him that your not dead yet and can live a happy, while short, life with him
He finds worth in your love and value in your life
If you say something to him expect his ears to be perked and listening
In the beginning when seeking counsel from his friends about his feelings he does let some of the negative responses get it him
But after he decides he can’t live without you it doesn’t matter what the others have said
Your his and he is yours and he will die beside you so he can be buried with you
Is a dominant personality but like a gentleman's dominance if that makes sense?
Adores cuddles but craves to have you in his lap while he reads
He loves it both for naughty reasons and innocent reasons
Loves to lay in your lap while on the couch
Specificity love it when he can push his face into your thighs and just chill with your fingers running through his hair
Would love to have three children some day adopted or not
Overall I think Mablung is a genuinely cool character
Masterlist

2024 Year in Review/Writing and Hobby Goals 2025
Back for another end of year reflection time!
A year and a half now in my current place and I still love it to bits. Unfortunately wasn't able to do the improvements I'd hoped for this year (cause rising costs of everything), but I hope in the next year or two from saving up and finally a salary increase.
It's been slow going, but I finally feel like my mental health is overall going in a positive direction. I felt my best this year since I started really struggling with my anxiety. Though I still slide into the mindset at times, my self-worth is no longer as tied to work and I'm living a better work life-balance, accepting that that has to be in place for my mental health. Which I wouldn't have done years ago.
Also after years of uncertainty, I finally have some answers as to my struggles with weight and am taking a supplement that I hope I'll see results with into the new year. Thankfully, my migraines didn't pop up as frequently thanks to getting on magnesium (wee!), but my sleep and stomach have been up and down and I'm still trying to figure those out (boo!).
Another sign my mental health has been better, my writing output is the most it has been in years. I surpassed my 25,000 word goal, posting 41,695 words, with between 10,000 - 20,000 words on unposted works. Baldur's Gate 3 (Tav/Gale and Durge[Sienna]/Gale fic) was the biggest driver of the year. Then with finally getting DA: Veilguard (I loathe putting the The in the title, lol) and falling head over heels with Emmrich Volkarin and my Rook, Caliwyn "Cali" Ingellvar, fic has been a happening with them. The real surprises of the year were starting up a multi-chapter BG3 AU of all things where my Bard Tav is under the patronage of Raphael AND fic of another Tav (Arivari "Ari") and her relationship with Raphael. Writing a multi-chaptered AU and a non-canon pairing in the same year was not on my writing bingo card for 2024, lol.
These all will continue to be my areas of focus in 2025. I'd also like to try and start dabbling in my original fiction again (it'll remain on the list until I finally do it!). I still have some My Time at Portia and Sandrock and Stardew Valley things I eventually want to write, but not at top priority (until the writing muse in the back of my brain makes it so).
I also worked on finishing up in progress Ellana/Blackwall ficlets. I decided it was time to set a final chapter number on my collection of ficlets and one-shots for them and Jane/Garrus. I'll never say never to writing for them again (especially when/if we get new ME), but I'm ready to finish the last of their stories and archive my other jotted down ideas.
Some favorites of my posted writing this year:
The Love of Mourn Watchers Ch 1-4 (Veilguard)
Raising of Stakes - Tav/Gale with Raphael interaction (BG3)
Wonders - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Respite - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Taken Care of - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Wounds - Sienna/Gale (BG3)
Stillness - Sienna/Gale (BG3)
Devil of a Patron Ch 1-2 - AU where Bard Tav is under patronage of Raphael (BG3)
Indulgences - Ari/Raphael (BG3)
While I didn't meet my reading goal of 20 new books, I did read 18 (plus, it evened out with all the writing I did, and reading so much Tav/Gale, Tav/Raphael and Emmrich/Rook fanfic). Favorite fiction and nonfiction included Raising Lazarus by Beth Macy; VE Schwab's A Darker Shade of Magic, Vicious, and Vengeful; T. Kingfisher's Paladin's Strength and Paladin's Faith; Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes; Winners Take All by Anand Giridharadas; and The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson.
I did well with my games list for this year, playing and finishing Cyberpunk 2077, I Was A Teenage Exocolonist, and Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, all of which I loved. Of course played DA: Veilguard and while there are critiques to be had, there is still so much I love and enjoy about it. In a surprise twist, we also got Life is Strange - Double Exposure with Max this year; again, not a perfect game (some story choices were...interesting and wild to say the least, and I need the next game to see how it all works out), but it was such a joy to play as Max again (a character who still resonates with me).
Other games I enjoyed were Arcade Spirits, Duck Detective - The Secret Salami, Echoes of the Plum Grove, The Oregon Trail, and Supermarket Simulator; with returns to Powerwasher Simulator and Disney Dreamlight Valley. I also finally got my grandfather's old desktop cd-rom drive to work which meant I could play many of my old games. Playing Carmen Sandiego and Jumpstart edutainment, Disney games, Lego Island, Backyard sports, Barbie, and older Sims games as an adult was just delightful nostalgia.
***
2025 Primary Writing Goals:

Working on last planned Ellana/Blackwall and Jane/Garrus ficlets

I read these two books together. It wasn’t intentional, they just happened to be things I was reading. I picked up Search History because I’m making an effort to read more Australian lit, and There Is No Ethan was on a Best Books of 2024 list on Libby. However, they do pair interestingly, as they’re both about the intersection of the Internet and dating life.
There Is No Ethan is
nonfiction/memoir
published in 2024 but about events that happened primarily in 2010/2011
about the catfishing of three women, how they realized they were being lied to, and what they did in response
Search History is
fiction - it kind of keeps you on your toes, genre-wise, but is probably best classified as lit fic
published in 2024 and set contemporaneously
about a woman who meets a guy at a bar but can’t resist looking him up online, an act that profoundly affects the course of their relationship
Both books are about lies/secrets, the vulnerability necessary in a romantic relationship, and the way that the Internet has changed the equation.
The pairing also really highlights the difference, culturally, between online dating in 2011 and online dating in 2024.
I found them both very readable, but I enjoyed Search History more, although that may simply be because I am always more interested in fiction than nonfiction.
