The ff7 novels are a series of books mostly written by Kazushige Nojima, depicting unique stories using the characters and world from ff7. These novels are separate from the games but stick closely to canon. Leslie Kyle and Kyrie Canaan actually originated from my favorite book so far, The Kids Are Alright: A Turks Side Story.

Most of these novels were published in Japanese first and later translated into English. Luckily, they can easily be found online for purchase or read through fan translations for free.

Youtube Audiobooks

The Lifestream on Youtube has uploaded a decent amount of audiobooks of the fan translations to their channel. I’d recommend checking them out if you’d enjoy that!

i'm reading the kids are alright: a turks side story and there's a bit where the turks have decided to look for jenova again, but there's a lot of interference from the people from edge, so when kyrie canaan gets attacked, tseng goes to check on her (and sort of kidnap her... dw about it), but she has a conversation with kadaj of all people and when i tell you tseng was freaking out.

"Opposite her was a teenage boy with silver hair and a well-structured face- and Tseng immediately felt his heart rate increase. He bore far too strong a resemblance to that infamous Shinra Company creation. Maybe it's just the silver hair, Tseng tried to tell himself, but the piercing eyes, too, called him to mind. A man once hailed as a hero who later tried to destroy the world.

"The memory of facing Sephiroth and all his fury came rushing back- being cut down, left for dead. It was all the Turk could do to stop his limbs from trembling as he looked the boy in the eye."

like DAMN. tseng is one of the most stoic, put together people in this universe- to get the information that from his point of view, sephiroth renders him terrified?? that's fucked.

"Final Fantasy VII - The Kids are Alright: A Turks Side Story" a book by Kazushige Nojima, same writer who wrote FF7, Crisis Core, Advent Children, etc.

It was a lot better than I expected for a game fill-in novel.

It focuses on two new characters Evan Townshend and Kyrie Canaan (thanks to this novel she had a brief appearance in Final Fantasy VII Remake, and thanks to the Remake this novel finally got translated into English 😁)

and takes place after the main game and mostly before the events of Advent Children.

The two of them in their late teens and run a detective agency with Leslie and Fabio in the new city of Edge. Due to a mix-up they get embroiled in Turks' business which is never pretty but quite funny. Especially Reno and Rude (Elena is a bloodthirsty menace!).

Rufus Shinra and Tseng also make an appearance, as does poor Johnny (but who cares 🤭), and so many other characters have cameos: Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, Denzel and Marlene, Don Corneo, Red XIII (Nanaki), and there's a surprise appearance. We even get a tiny glimpse into how lonely Aerith was. Known locations are used: Costa del Sol, Nibelhem, Icicle Lodge, Lifestream,...

The book is not perfect but *a lot* better than I expected for what it is, and it was a nice prequel to Advent Children. It explained more about where Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz came from and why Rufus is looking for Jenova again, etc. but still the main story stayed focused on Evan and Kyrie.

So I am definitely going to read the other two other Final Fantasy 7 books by Nojima: On The Way to a Smile and Trace of Two Pasts.

pulling shit out of my ass rn but I love that Kadaj is a thing in The Kids Are Alright. he's an it. he's not human. he's Jenova, he's Sephiroth, he's your loved one, he's none of these or all of the above. Ever since his first introduction he just lurks around every corner, putting everyone's trust on edge, because that creature is out there somewhere and it knows all your secrets and it is watching. but you can't see it's true self until it's too late.

Evan narrates the book and I'm glad he does because he's honest about how terrified he is of Kadaj. He trembles in every limb, his voice cracks, and he's scared of pulling the wrong move and pissing Kadaj off. even Reno himself underestimates Kadaj and calls him a "punk" until a bullet-proof windshield is smashed like paper and he says "okay, not a punk, a monster."

kadaj was genuinely terrifying in that book and I wish the movie touched on that more. he definitely had his moments (such as when he slipped through the cracks of the door and single handedly wiped the floor with Reno and Rude) but there wasn't nearly as much of that sense of dread that he had in the book.

Sooooo a couple of days ago when I started writing this FF7 fic I made the rather impulsive decision to purchase Final Fantasy VII The Kids Are Alright: A Turks Side Story.

Because it's for fanfiction 'research purposes' so that totally justifies my dropping 14 bucks on a book. And totally not because I got drawn in by Turks being in the title.

Look. I am AWARE that I am grown-ass adult swiftly my glorious approaching mid-life crisis era and if I want to be utterly ridiculous and purchase a book for a 25+ year old game just for fanfiction research purposes then I'm not making any excuses.

I'm aware I'm ridiculous.

Anyway, this book? Actually kinda a banger. This is prolly the best light novel translation I've ever read. It's engaging and interesting. I'm only on like page 35 so it's too early to make any real decision but it's ALREADY paying off dividends in that I already have stuff I intend on folding into this fic.

Like apparently Elena was liaisoning with the WRO who mass produce painkillers for Geostigma patients because apparently it was agonizing. (Which makes sense from what little we see in Advent Children) and that the WRO was the ones who were gonna distribute it. I'd been having Tseng play as Reeve's sort of go-between so I'm going pivot from here because of that info.

I'm going to keep writing the fic but I am definitely going to put some effort over the next couple of days to read more into the book. Only problem I'm having so far is the printing is kinda small. I'd say it's like a 10pt font and isn't times new roman but a slightly lighter serif style font which for my 40+ eyes is JUST SMALL ENOUGH to make me strain to read it.

Which....blows on soooo many levels cause fuck me am I really getting that fucking old that I will be needing large format printing books in the next decade. Also, why the hell are there no digital copies of this or On the Way to a Smile??

I did find a digital copy of the fan-translated On the Way to a Smile online. It's definitely not as smooth as the translation for this book. Like I said, this is an exceptionally well translated light novel. I've been kinda burned repeatedly in the past when it comes to light novel translations and most have been kinda....meh.

Which is kinda understandable because it's hard to convey nuance, differing cultural norms and what have you from one language to another. I might actually pick up the official copy of On the Way to a Smile if it was done by the same team as this book.

EDIT: one other thing that makes buying this book completely worthwhile is apparently Rufus Shinra has the very uncomplimentary nickname if ‘Doofus Shinra’ because he was heading the Shinra empire when everything went to shit.

And you can bet your ass I will be incorporating that into this fic somehow
