Chadley, hiding the machete behind his back because he was planning on killing Sephiroth to cut the problem at the root + human life is fleeting anyway and ultimately insignificant: Oh, I was just going around asking for combat data.

Rufus finds out that soldier has untapped intelligence that may help him solve his attempts on his father’s life by making him back down via blackmail instead. The only way to get Kunsel to talk is to properly wine and dine him (look, Kunsel is a cheep date if he knows the person looking for info is low on finds, or he likes them. A Shinra doesn’t fit anywhere on his list). Rufus also employs the Turks to help him win his way into Kunsel’s heart files.

Also? Kunsel is just cheeky enough that he is starting to grow on Rufus, the Turks, and his dog. Maybe.

*Rufus and Kunsel are at a candle-lit dinner, Rufus is clearly trying to seduce Kunsel for his personal gain*

Rufus: Tell me something thrilling~

Kunsel: Oh, okay. Sephiroth and Genesis share underwear sometimes.

Kunsel: Zack and Cloud shower together sometimes and it's so refreshing to see two best friends who are comfortable with each other like that.

Rufus: Kunsel.

Kunsel: Oh, wait, wait, I got one. The chicken they serve in the SOLDIER mess hall on Tuesdays is actually chocobo meat :/

*Rufus, patience thinning, grips Kunsel by the shoulders and pulls him close*

Rufus: I want you to tell me the most damning secret about Shinra you know. Excite me. Enthral me. Tell me something that will urge me to kiss you.

Kunsel: Went to a tarot reader. They said Sephiroth's gonna turn evil in about three years. Told Sephiroth this. He said, and I quote, "The oddly maternal voice of the sleep paralysis demon that watches me at night told me I'll achieve true mental clarity in three years" so I shouldn't worry.

Rufus:

Kunsel: Please don't kiss me.

Rufus:

Kunsel: I'm not homophobic, I just don't like you.

Sephiroth Rufus relationship hcs?

Rufus was Sephiroth's main tormentor growing up.

Being lonely and deprived of a mother, he took his pain and aggression out on someone in the exact same situation, projecting all his rage and frustration.

Sephiroth spent the first decade of his life trying to avoid Rufus as much as possible whenever he came skulking into the labs.

He took special pleasure in insisting he "owned" Sephiroth, forcing him to perform tricks and dangerous feats for his amusement.

Hojo forcefully separated them after Rufus pushed Sephiroth too far and Sephiroth ended up getting hurt.

Years later, Sephiroth hates Rufus with a burning passion, and long before he seemingly murdered Glenn.

Rufus contrarily realized he was attracted to Sephiroth and laments the fact that it's too late--he sank that ship when they were kids.

So their relationship is still mutually hostile for the most part.

Rufus occasionally refers to Sephiroth as his "dog", giving him petty orders and forcing him to submit on front of crowds. He humiliates Sephiroth whenever possible.

Sephiroth, for his part, does the bare minimum for Rufus. Unless it's life or death, he mostly just avoids him or half-asses his orders.

After Glenn is seemingly killed, Sephiroth never goes near Rufus ever again. He knows what he did. He somehow found out. And he won't forget it. Until Rufus directly becomes president, Seph refuses to kneel to him. And he plans on retiring before Rufus takes over anyway.

Rufus' anger and unrequited feelings boils over and he is particularly nasty towards Seph thereafter.

This nastiness gradually gives in to fear over time, especially after Sephiroth's cute little stunt in Rebirth.

Long after Sephiroth has been vanquished, Rufus has frequent nightmares about him.

And this fear is partially passed on via a fear of Kadaj as well.

Though, like most conflicts, Rufus chooses to confront his fear through reckless pettiness and bravado.
