Hakata Station December 2024 🎄
Hakata Station at Christmas 2024 was an absolute winter wonderland! The centrepiece, of course, was a massive Christmas tree, its lights twinkling with such festive enthusiasm that it almost looked like it was in competition with the stars. The colours were a dazzling mix of reds, greens, and golds, making the whole area look like a giant Christmas card come to life. And as if that wasn’t enough to put you in the holiday spirit, there were four Santa statues dotted around the area, each one sitting more jolly than the last, as if they were on a well-deserved break from delivering presents.
Naturally, the place was packed, especially in December when everyone was eager to soak up the holiday cheer. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement—shoppers, families, and tourists alike all gathered around to take in the display. Food and drink stalls lined the walkways, offering everything from hot chocolate that could melt the coldest of hearts to sweet treats that would make even the Grinch himself crack a smile. The smell of grilled snacks filled the air, and you could hear the occasional jingle of festive music playing in the background.
I’d pass by here nearly every evening after work, and it was always lively—like a mini celebration on my way home. There would often be bands playing live music on a stage, adding to the merry vibe. It was the kind of place where you could stop for a moment, sip on something warm, and let the festive tunes fill the air. Honestly, it felt like the whole of Hakata Station had been transformed into one big Christmas party, and everyone was invited. I half-expected to see Rudolph himself popping out from behind a stall to offer me a mulled wine. But hey, with the tree so bright and the Santas so merry, I wasn’t going to complain. It was Christmas in full swing—colourful, chaotic, and wonderfully festive.

July 2018. Once at night and in the morning at Faine Misto music festival. My coterie refused to sleep as we roamed muffled scenes and off-site corn fields. This was an irregular time when I realized I'm actually making some memorable moments out of my elapsing youth. Something to return to when darkness engulfs.

Happy Holidays to all!
I hope all of your winter wishes come true ☆
During this time on Starland, Starlings will celebrate the Festival of Illumination.
It's a holiday about celebrating family and friends as well as the stars that shine in the sky that provide light even in the darkest of seasons.
The Wisher's guide says this about it in its glossary:
"Arriving midway through the Time of Shadows, this holiday is a welcome break from the bleak cold season. It's a celebration of lights and family. Millions of tiny twinkle lights cover buildings and hang in the sky. Music, dancing, special foods, and sharing the love of family lift everybody's spirits during this dreary time of year."
We can't be for sure when 'midway through the Time of Shadows' is, but it's definitely a winter holiday.

Hakata Toumyou Lantern Arts Festival 2024 (第28回博多灯明ウォッチング): A Magical Evening I Almost Missed
One of the most enchanting festivals I’ve experienced in Fukuoka, the Hakata Toumyou Lantern Arts Festival, almost slipped through my fingers last year. A kind colleague had sent me information about it—a one-day-only event held on the 19th of October, 2024. But, truth be told, I almost forgot about it entirely. Still battling terrible jet lag, I spent most of the day sleeping, and by the time I woke up, the sun was already setting.
Initially, I wasn’t even planning to go. My day had been consumed with a practical mission: heading to Canal City to find cheap trainers after realising my family dog had chewed through the back of my current pair. But as I stood in the bustling shopping centre, trainers in hand, I suddenly remembered the festival. The thought of missing it entirely pushed me into action.
I quickly made my way to Kushida Shrine, practically sprint-walking the last stretch. By the time I arrived, the festival was winding down, and some of the lantern candles were already being blown out. My heart sank for a moment, but then I turned a corner and caught sight of something breathtaking—a massive lantern display in the shape of a phoenix.
It was stunning. Hundreds of tiny, glowing lanterns had been arranged with precision, forming the intricate outline of the mythical bird. Its fiery wings seemed to stretch across the ground, and the soft, flickering candlelight brought it to life in the most magical way. The phoenix symbolised renewal and hope, and in that moment, I felt both awe and gratitude that I had made it just in time to witness this beautiful creation.
Though I only managed to catch the last 20 minutes of the festival, it left a lasting impression. The atmosphere was peaceful yet filled with reverence, as locals strolled through the displays, quietly admiring the artistry and effort that had gone into creating them. The festival celebrates not only art but also the warm, communal spirit of Hakata, and it’s clear how much love and dedication the organisers pour into it each year.
I couldn’t help but kick myself for not waking up earlier. The thought of all the other displays I missed lingered in my mind, but I promised myself I wouldn’t make the same mistake next year. For those precious 20 minutes, though, I was completely captivated.
The Hakata Toumyou Lantern Arts Festival is truly a treasure—a perfect blend of art, light, and tradition. It’s an event that reminds you of the beauty of fleeting moments, and I’ll be counting down the days until the next one.
