Walter Hopps...Walter opened Ferus Gallery and partnered with Irving Blum and they gave Warhol his first show in 1962 which had his Campbell soup can set of 32 which Walter convinced Irving to purchase for 1000$ and later in 1996 sell to MOMA for 15 million. In 1963 the young Walter organized Marcel Duchamp’s first retrospective at Pasadena Art Museum where Duchamp played chess with a nude opponent. Walter curated the New Painting of Common Objects show which featured Lichtenstein Dine Warhol and Ruscha before the term Pop Art was used so today’s drawing is an attempt to give this amazing gallerist some love #arthistoryisfun #walterhopps #edkienholz #irvingblum #ferusgallery #urbansurrealism #galleryhistory #pdxartist #portlandartist #gregoryhergert (at Southeast Portland, Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMOOg_NHvO5/?igshid=9skzsv645fas

#FridayFeature There are some big resin paintings that I did based on Navajo blankets. They were first grid paintings and then diagonal paintings. The artist Tony Berlant had introduced Navajo blankets to me, and to our circle of friends associated with Ferus Gallery. I stretched canvas and put strips of wood at the edges, and used a carpenter plumb-bob to make lines. You pull the string out and snap it and it instantly makes a line, which I found magical. Then I put masking tape in different places to make "lazy lines," which are also part of the blankets - the places where the thread goes off the warp or weft. I lived in New Mexico for a while to look at all of these sources...I also did drawings on vellum, some of which were based on Navajo chief blankets. I was interested in making delineations of patterns. I wasn't interested in the space, but they became very pictorial; people always commented on that. The pictorial space was a byproduct of the activity, and I do like that idea that you do it for one reason and something else results. Often, when I am working on a series of paintings, I am going in one direction, and out on the edge something flutters. I say, "Yeah I see you. I'm going to finish this now, but I'll come back to you." That thing flashes in the corner again, and after about three or four times, I give in. That is when one series ends and a new one begins. -- Ed Moses interviewed by Jennifer Samet, Beer with a Painter, LA Edition: Ed Moses, Hyperallergic, July 25, 2015 -- Artwork info: Ed Moses, White Grid, 2015, acrylic on canvas, 52 x 42 inches -- #edmoses #moses #Friday #whitegrid #grid #painting #painter #contemporary #artist #ferusgallery #ferus #navajo #inspiration #canvas #acrylic #tonyberlant #newmexico (at Leslie Sacks Gallery)

The venerable West Coast abstractionist, Ed Moses, was one of the original members of the legendary Ferus Gallery crew of the 1950s and made waves with his experimental permutations on canvas. Moses has participated in a number of landmark exhibitions, including “Los Angeles: 1955–1985, Birth of an Artistic Capital” at the Centre Pompidou, in Paris, and the Getty Center’s recent “Pacific Standard Time” initiative. #edmoses #CentrePompidou #westcoastabstractionist #artgroupprojects #ferusgallery #gettycenter

Words by @brettgorvy In 1961 a young Los Angeles art dealer called Irving Blum visited an equally unknown artist named Andy Warhol on one of his scouting trips to New York. He described the encounter: "I walked by a torn-out magazine of Marilyn Monroe pinned to a wall and leaning on the wall were three paintings of Campbell's Soup Cans. I asked,"How come three?". He said,"I am doing 32, all the varieties of soup." A lightbulb went off, happily. He had no representation in New York. I said, "What about my showing these soup cans in LA." He hesitated. I said, "Andy, movie stars come to the gallery." A total lie. July 1962 was his first show of the 32 Campbell's Soup Can paintings. I sold four or five [including to actor and friend Dennis Hopper], but I had the idea of keeping them all together. He said, "I'd love that, they were conceived as a series." I said, "Andy, how much do you want for the 32 paintings?" He said, "$1,000." I persuaded my collectors to sell me back the few pictures I had sold and I sent him $100 a month for 10 months." The 1962 Soup Can show at Blum's Ferus Gallery put both Warhol and the LA art scene on the map. In 1996 The Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired the 32 paintings from Blum for $15 million. Last year an individual Soup Can painting sold at Christie's for $9 million. You can do the math. The 32 Soup Cans are currently on view at MoMA as a special highlight exhibition, presented on long white shelves - just as they were exhibited by Irving Blum at Ferus in 1962. I shot all 32 for this small video yesterday - somehow the plastic music of Aqua seemed appropriate for Warhol's genius celebration of mass-consumer culture. #andywarhol #soupcans #irvingblum #ferusgallery #moma @themuseumofmodernart #aqua (at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art)
